    Try listening to an audiobook at 2.5x speed while reading the physical book or epub. It's game-changing. Better comprehension, better attention span, and easy to take notes. The main thing is, you can sit and read for hours without getting distracted.

    I am on my third Kindle e-ink version. The game changer for me was the ability to travel with multiple books. I found myself reading multiple books in parallel as opposed to picking only one as that's all I wanted to carry. The paperback version of Don Quixote went around the world with me (twice), but I was not always in the mood to read that on a plane. Once I got the kindle I read the Pulitzer prize, Nobel Prize and multiple other books pretty much every year as I had options, but no added weight. The latest paperwhite kindle has same size screen as original but is way smaller and lighter. Fits in the back pocket of jeans literally now. I have tried to use Ipad and PC for reading but the e-ink is best compromise for books has no battery life issue. Never had a kindle e-ink go dead on a plane, but PC, Ipad, and Kindle Fire have all died mid flight over the pacific.

    I think a lot of people argue that one way of reading is better than another but I think any way people feel comfortable consuming books is the right way. I grew up on hard copy and audio and began doing 90% of my reading on iPad after I started college because it was more convenient (and easier to switch back and forth to school work). I am now considering a kindle because I become too easily distracted with a computer and want to be able to read my large collection of books while detoxing from my screens.

      What I started doing, as someone who lives in student housing and will probably move soon so only reads on Kindle, is I paint the book spines like i'm making an actual bookshelf, so i'm actually excited to read more to see my bookshelf grow! It also gives me an excuse to paint, which allows some time to listen to some audiobooks (I only allow myself to listen to audiobooks when i'm painting). It does give great satisfaction, it's easily removable, you can carry it with you if you move and I just think that fits my needs a lot more than physical books!

      I also tend to shift from kindle reading to the audiobook version. Say I am reading and my eyes are tired right before bed. I'll just ask Alexa to play the audiobook on Audible from where I stopped reading. I'll go to sleep to it and it will automatically stop playing it after a while so I can sort of know where I stopped so as to continue the day after. It's insane how much more reading I started doing when I got my kindle and then when I started reading and listening to the same books.

    For someone that never enjoyed writing into precious paper books, ebooks allow me total freedom to jot thoughts down and highlight, no guilty feelings about ruining them. And it’s too easy to go back to any part, instead of enduring the frustration of searching for a specific line buried in hundreds of pages.
    So while paper may give the experience of something tangible, digital offers an unmatched power over content. In a larger context, that ends up producing a richer experience for me.

    I am a very very slow reader, and my patience to sit through more than 10 pages a day is impossible. This is the strategy I use, that works - helps me read about 30 pages at a time easily + I absorb all the content w/ its nuances.
    Quite simple, I sit with the book I wanna read, with its audiobook on Audible plugged in my ears. I read through the book at the same pace as the audiobook plays along. Anytime I slack off, the audiobook brings me right on track.
    The audiobook - 1) guides my pace of reading the book, 2) helps me absorb the information through two sources - visual (by reading the book) + audio (by listening to the audiobook), and 3) keeps me on track from getting bored and straying away.
    Go head, give it a try, and lemme know if you have any strategies of your own for an impatient and slow reader like me :)

    I used to love reading physical books but once I bought my first kindle years ago I couldn't go back. The Kindle is the number one reading device, it's just so convenient. I can easily carry 2-3 books I am reading at the time and quickly read while waiting for an appointment or my public transportation. Also being able to read while in bed and not lose my location if I fall asleep is great. I also have the iPad but it's just not convenient the battery runs out or the brightness just puts a lot of stress on my eyes. Although I still go back to physical books when reading or studying something technical.

    One other thing the iPad has over the Kindle is when reading graphic heavy books - text books, graphic novels, comics, all DK books, instructional books, etc. And one other plus for the Kindle, for those of us who share a bed with a partner, it's so nice to not have to blind them with a bedroom light when you want to read and they want to sleep.

    Very nice video, Ali: You would have noticed more people now prefer reading books on phones, tablets/iPad and laptops for many reasons, which includes (1) Tablet/iPad can carry between 1-200, 000 books on memory cards, (2) all books now have audio functionality, with natural voices - you can listen, pause and highlight important details, (3) can adjust brightness to your preference. If you have a tablet/iPad with up too 600 nits, you will enjoy reading books even under direct sunlight, and (4) when you have many physical books, you begin to have challenges with managing them, and moving with them around (5) and for students and people doing serious research, it is easy to Index, Search and Extract facts and key points from e-books than physical books

    Being someone in the IT industry, I have become accustomed to reading books on my iPad. The reason for this is because of O'Reilly Learning. Being able to have their entire catalog (for a cheap price) in the palm of my hand is very refreshing, and it makes learning new skills for my job really easy. As of now I only buy a physical book if I really love the author's work and want to physically have it, for example. Rich Roll sold autographed copies of his new book Voicing Change and I knew I needed it. Other than that, I'm completely okay having a 128GB iPad that's only used for books and learning.

  • @hhjj7
    @hhjj7 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Fun comparison! I have to say that I find the iPad or a physical book really helps when you want to flip through the book and find a specific page / section for reference. Or for example when you are reading a novel and want to check back like: what was the connection again of that character last chapter. To just flip back and see what you missed. (I especially do that with thrillers as I'm like. Woah woah! What did I miss? Plot twists) those are terrible on ereaders. 😅 And I love that I can just screenshot and send it to a friend when I have a nice paragraph if you're on phone/ipad.
