    In the next two years, I will be building an electric bike of my own, I wanted one since my mini electric motorcycle got stolen out my years when I was young. And I finally can see it becoming a reality in the next few years. With the help of your videos and my new job in the military, i feel as though I could really do it.

    Nice bike and tutorial. I’m 61 and I just went from knowing nothing about ebikes (always had regular pedal bikes, well and also a few Harleys and Hondas) to assembling a dual 1200W (2900W Peak) Ebikeling setup, including front and rear motors. Watched a couple of your videos and had it running 55km/hr in less than a day. Next I want to try building my first mid-mount bike. I’m hooked.

    Lovely job Andy, don't listen to trolls in the comments banging on about legal ebikes, for over 20 years I've been involved with the worldwide ebike scene and am well known and still am riding high power ebikes, every day in London the roads are full of them and electric scooters, fact is if you are sensible, ride safely and maintain the bike you won't ever have a problem, lots of these 250w legal bikes peak at up to 800W, the police have far more urgent things to worry about than an electric bike that's producing over 250W in power.
    You keep stepping up your game and I love you for that and your prices in your shop are very reasonable, well done.
    People should try a legal Vs a real ebike before they comment, it's illegal to watch BT sport on your phone in the middle of a field without a TV licence, some laws are there to be broken 😆

    Absolutely brilliant build, very nice to see a frame ready to be built on that's light and of a high end spec.
    Only one thought, what's stopping water, mud, grit etc from running down the outside of the battery and pooling in the square section of the frame that houses the battery connector? From what I can see in the video it doesn't seem to be sealed at the bottom and I couldn't see any drainage holes apart from the hole the cables came up through for the battery and display cables?
    Concerned it would be problematic come winter time on the trails

    I love trail riding and currently have a Cannondale Scalpel. I would love to keep riding to keep healthy but at 43 it is becoming increasingly more demanding.
    I agree with most that current emtb are way overpriced for the average Joe out there and BAFANG motors even seem to offer a superior spec than most fancy bikes on the current market!
    I would like to do what you’ve done (build from scratch) as a statement and for the feeling of building it with my hands.
    May I ask; how much in terms of parts all together have you spent to put the whole bike together??

    My 36V350W TSDZ2 mid drive motor has a pretty good 80nm of torque on a carbon fibre frame on 24 Spoke Zerolite Pro Vuelta wheels which are pretty hard core wheels. My bike is set up for the road using Michelin Wild Run'R Advanced 1.1" slick tires with MR TUFFY tire liner, I've got both the 36T & 48T Chainring on the front. With the tires I'll probably get 1 puncture from the life of the tire after it's worn down to braid under the outer casing which has worn off after thousands of kilometers riding.

I'm really happy with it and have since changed basically everything but my frame and wheels. The frame its on is a 2001 Kona Roast, which is a solid frame but I'd ideally like something with more modern geometry and possibly full suspension like the one in this video.

    I must admit your videos have been very helpful as last year brought a E+Plus bike from Argos front wheel motor, at first for price was very impressive had everything on it mudguards, chainguard, stand and many of items normally have to buy seperate so really felt I got a bargain never planned what to come. Just after having it for a month and lost all power and forever hit a bump chain come off and the love for this cycle started to change, it started to sound tinny and deraillur was ugly and cheap looking never went into 7th when adjusted to 7th gear wouldn't go into 1st gear. Front disc brake went funny and everything about the cycle felt cheap, looked great but everything was cheap, metal mudguards and chain protector just going back to the 70s and early 80s, that was fine for then but not today as there is better materials, so I was going to send the cycle back but watching convertions had a better idea, with it being a eBike it had places to hid cables which a normal cycle just wrap cables exterior. so ideal for convertion,
    First of all get rid of the hub motor convert to a mid motor so opted for the Bafang 250w, this would get rid of the nasty chain guard that when chain comes off takes 5 -6 minutes to get chain back on, no mesing with botton crank bracket motor slipped strieght through cables hidden and it has a back pannier battery soldered a better connecror got rid of their poor connectors that kept vibrating off. Also swapped deraillur from their nasty looking one, replaced metal mudguards with good quality plastic ones so took all the rattling away when riding the cycle. Had a spare front wheel and was able to use the tyres and inner tube which where probably best thing of rhis cycle, so I am now riding 35% of the original cycle as 65% of the existing parts have been replaced.
    What as this done to my cycle? As it was I would of given it 4 out of 10 but as it is now 8 out of 10, I need to get better disc brakes as already had a brake failure with existing brakes, I did buy a universal 160mm brake set but didn't fit properly think need a different bracket, if I could get better disc brakes this would take the cycle to a great 9 out of 10. To get 10 out of 10 I think the colour of rhe cycle needs changing but not going that far. But yes converting your own you can make it as you would like it. All we need now is the UK to cange the law concerning ebike in line with US 750w, 28mph then could really build a beauty. Mike

    Great job @AndyKirby. You achieved what some of us only dream about. I'm curious where the motor controller is hidden. It must be built into the motor is it? What mech have you got? Seems the chainwheel is very large. Yes you need to publish the weight. What are the options for brake cut-outs using Hydraulic brakes? Good luck with it. Cheers.

    • @KillerRaptorr
      @KillerRaptorr 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      90% of mid-drives have built in Controllers into the motors. That's why their abit more bulker. Mid-drives are more torque because their using the chain for power performance, while hubs require the power straight off the bat in the wheel So some are direct or geared, Requiring the ESC to be outside for better cooling. But Mid-drives have so much torque their motors don't get as hot. So they can handle more load that's why their dependent on the chain for power.

    • @KillerRaptorr
      @KillerRaptorr 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @SpeedRacer 650 Oh no. I got something cheaper and nicer upgrade platform i like. I got a Hyper-Eride mountain bike with V-brakes. (Can also support disc brakes. but i'ma stick to V-brakes atm.)
      It's gonna be like less then 3500-4000$ once fully upgraded. Stock bike is 645$ atm, will have Dual battery packs, Dual motors (Front and Mid-or Rear hub still deciding which system to go with on the rear.), Full Shimano Deore system 9speed, Rockshock Solo air fork, Alum handlebars/Seatpost/Stem/Peddles/etc. With 3point mounted rack for cargo. It has flush mounted battery (that'll be used for ether rear or mid-drive.), Another battery above it as a waterbottle design for front, or extra batteries in rear rack. Dual throttles.

    • @KillerRaptorr
      @KillerRaptorr 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @SpeedRacer 650 Yes it's a hardtail vs a Full suspension. Roughly similar.
      Fun thing about building your own kind of bike tho. Is basically the only thing you really need to swipe if you want it a different bike. Is the frame. Well course in your case or so, the frame requires the specific motor and battery. But if you bought a normal frame you could use a mid-drive conversion kit and waterbottle design battery (that fits like a normal waterbottle drink holder.).
      This bike you could also technically upgrade to dual motors to, just get a seatpost rack, and add a pack with a battery for a front hub. And your good to go. Not much weight added, maybe 10-15pounds but since the battery will be in the rear, and the front hub. it'd still keep it pretty balanced.
      The weight on mine stock is 50pounds. This is pretty much roughly the exact same as you find normally on high end ebikes to around 45-60pounds is the targeted range for mountain ebikes. Roads will be probably lesser since their general design is speed, so lightweight is mainly their focus.
      With the rack and cargo bag with abit of stuff i'm adding 10pounds yes. And a battery 5pounds and a hub 5pounds. So extra 20pounds from the stock 50. But i'm keeping weight pretty evened across the bike. I'll have 2batteries in the middle of the frame, hub front, and ether hub rear or mid-drive middle, and if maybe extra battery or so in rear rack. But mainly rear for cargo. Overall the 20extra pounds isn't gonna be much pain including if both my drives are are good on torque and power. And i have good tread with large nobs with good psi to handle the weight and grip.
      I had a yukon trail cruiser that was steel frame, ran at 24volt 250watt 10ah lithium battery, stock weighed 80pounds, still hit around 15-20mph on it and 20miles of range, even after i added like 30pounds extra with more cargo weight i put on, It was a beast of a cruiser. And all on throttle control no peddling. Even off-road and it shredded pretty well. Compared to trails alot of mountainbikers go that are pretty fairly hard, Even my yukontrail shredded threw where i go, which normally has a softer kind of road. So if that could handle with such a lower motor. I'm sure the upgrades and abit lesser weight my Hyper has, Will rip much better with it's power and dual performance.

      @SpeedRacer 650 Mountain biking isn't about speeding 25mph+ down hill. Mountain biking is about going off-road and exploring. People seem to mistaken what the point of mountain biking is really. It's off-road tough terrain riding. Not about zipping downhills and shredding inches from cliffs, or jumping 50feet off ledges.
      Any mountain bike will have it's limits to how much beat you can smash on it.
      If you want downhill, you want some good suspension to dampen the hips and humps of the fast attacks of the rough terrain while zipping down. With a pretty good strong frame. Rest of the components can be whatever your choice since they have no relation to the strong of the frame or suspension.
      If you want a Jumper. you need to have a strong frame, with stiff suspension to have a slower impact. Meaning the suspension isn't gonna be plush on off-roading, but will take the impacts much better on jumps.
      If you just want a overall mountain bike. Any bike normally will do. Since your main focus is to enjoy riding, Not zipping fast or jumping crazy. But riding the rough harsh terrain, which is gonna have alot of nasty things trying to rip your tires up. So mainly these focus on their grip and thicken treads with high psi for better ride, Compared to Downhillers that normally use lower psi, and jumpers normally in mid-range.

      @SpeedRacer 650 That differs on your personal point of what components and parts you want. And what frame your gonna use them on. And power of electric ability and range.
      It all differs and will add into your price. Mainly the biggest will be the Motor/Battery for your idea of getting such.
      Highest components on my list are mainly the front fork, Hub or mid-drive replacement for rear wheel. Front hub, battery, rearwheel replacement if i go mid-drive. or crank set if i go rear hub. (Rear wheel replacement = wheel itself, cassette 9speed, 9speed chain, shifter lever, (already have deraulleur but that was around 50$ to.) (If hub, I'd still need abit of the above, but with a shimano hollowtech 2 deore 3by crank that i'll use the middle ring on after remove the inner/outer since my bike can't use a 3by system/front derailleur.)
      Most other parts are pretty cheap. But still good comparable to higher ends. Just gotta be abit look around for good cheap parts. (And these are all NEW parts. Not used or found on ebay.)
      If you were to just put a new battery, Rear rack, and front hub. It'd probably only cost you like less then 600$ (battery, motor, rack, and Bag. for your current bike.)

    hi. awesome build, how much does it cost to put together. I've done an e-bike build with a ibis mojo hd and a bafang mid drive motor, yet to try it out on trails, has the motor hanging down a bit on the frame, but nice n quick on the roads. Cheers

    I found a excellent condition stored for 10 years downhill Canondale perp circa 2008 for $600 cad. $300?uk. Anyway, 200mm of travel and Im just finishing the cable management for a pretty clean looking install. I'm using a Bafang 750 and I have 32! Headway cells. Backpack battery pack. have to wait for a speed sensor extention cable. Its fun working on bikes everything is so well made compared to cars.

    just not sure which way I should go though, with a conversion, or build from scratch. but both would be of the Bafang system.

    Just been looking at FullyLoaded London, their bikes are crazy prices and some don't have these quality components. I see you can buy this bike ready built. I have ridden 'normal' eBikes but never owned one. That is about to change, I love this build and it is pretty future proof. Would the experienced E-bikers think this is too powerful for a first E-bike, all be it for a long time cyclist. My thinking is for £3400 this bike gives so much more than I have seen in London. I really am thinking of buying one fully built as it does cost a lot and prefer the idea of Andy building my bike.

    I think the caples passing through holes in the frame should go through grommets to avoid chafing, especially the battery output leads. I hope the battery output is fused.

    Well I have decided to make this a 6 month project, I was going to buy a bulls estram evo 45 am (brose s pedelec 28mph) in Germany and ferry it back to the UK at the start of next year.
    I need to replace/supplement my focus s27 which is also a s ped but is getting in need of tlc after 15 thousand miles.
    Anyway I am definatly into making my own now and plan to start in the next 2 weeks by buying your frame and motor but I was going to take my time with component purchasing just waiting for best bang for buck deals .

    A used donor bike and you could build an amazing machine for a tiny fraction of what the mainstream manufacturers are asking. As you say, even all new it's way cheaper. They have been ripping us off asking those kinds of prices. I guess a fair bit of the 8K or whatever goes to sponsor people who try to justify that you need to spend all that on a bike.

    • @sageoz9886

      Andrew Norris it's not ripping off as they've been investing R&D into developing this tech for decades, plus the high end ebike usually have a lot of fit and finish people hours invested into them. They just seem expensive when looking at the highest end new models that are dripping with high end lightweight yet durable materials and compared to high volume gas vehicles that we are so used to that are cheap yet are expensive to operate over time

    I've build a few e bikes
    But they only cost me a fraction compared to the ones on this channel lol.
    For £380 every single part & bike included.
    I've built 3000w 72v to 84v.
    Mid Drive system Ebike
    29 inch wleels & 12 speed set-up at the back
    And 3 at the front.
    With rotor discs & 4 piston sram hydraulic brakes.
    Air shock forks
    It's a scott racing bike converted into a motorbike.
    If I bought everything new plug & play parts it would have cost probably £4000+.
    I have no idea why TH-camrs don't build cheap Ebike just to show the viewers.
