If your vehicle is front wheel drive access to the seal is much more difficult because the transmission is transversely mounted
And dealerships always cost more
Well idk where you live but around me (Florida) shops have to charge whatever the book says time wise, so say the book said this job took 5 hours ( which it would t be that long but still) they would charge parts and then 5 hours of labor regardless if it actually took them 5 hours or if they did it in 5 minutes

What is the tool you used to install the new one?
Would a bad output shaft cause the motor to not spin freely?

Hey I would really recommend torquing those ujoint clamps to spec to prolong the life of the bearing.
If I can’t do that because I lack the tools can I just mark them with chalk before I remove them and line them back up after I done?

My 99’ Sierra is leaking tranny fluid from the rear seal and it needs to be replaced. I assume it’s pretty much the same procedure as whatever this truck is?
How about putting the camera closer to where your working so we can see something besides the back of your head. Useless video all we see is you pounding on the back of a transmission. Do us a favor next time and skip the videoing part of it.

Just buy a seal puller from Harbor Freight for 7.99$. It's well worth it.

Is sealant required for the metal rim of this seal, where it bears in the hole?
EDIT: I'm sealing it with a tiny bead of Permatex Anaerobic Gasket Maker (same stuff I used on the front bearing retainer's mating surface).
Did he grease that seal for breakin? I gotta do that to my 96 3500HD soon, helpful to see it done.

so what was the point of the output shaft seal? I know for the fluid so it wont leak but do i keep it in there or this is just for the removing process please info me i'm lost
So fluid won't leak out, so debris won't get in, and to take up space between the driveshaft and tailshaft.
It's just for show!
I'm not a mechanic, but seeing that gas tank gives me flashbacks to when my uncle and I dropped the gas tank to replace the fuel pump on our 03 f 150.
Should try it in 20 below wind chill on a driveway in chicago....great fun....lol
For every repair (even though you know and most people know) mention each tool used (brand,model,size etc). Same with vehicle being repaired. Example say "with this repair I'm using brand x ratcheting box wrench size x and..etc". In my opinion I think would make your channel grow.

I Mark both yokes before removing
Old seal was leaking so I replaced the seal and installed new u joints since they were the original from 97. Got the new seal installed and it’s leaking around the weep hole. Transmission fluid all under the truck. What did I miss or do wrong? Everything went in fine.
The tail shaft bushing is shot. You need to replace that guy. Pain in the fucking ass is the best way I can explain it.
and That Kiddies, is how you lose all the needle bearings in a ujoint.......
so how much does this cost at a local mechanic?
Depends could be about 100 bucks. 20 bucks or so for the part+labor and potential fluid refill

@@xxyy1318 really depends on the mechanic and your car as well. My car is simple because it was an older car but I'd imagine newer cars that might give more problems would cost more.
I had the mechanic change my seal because the price wasn't bad but your milage may vary

Well this seal is called extension housing seal, the output shaft seal is inside the extension housing, but whatever,

No grease fittings on the ujoint?
Nope. Not all of them have a grease fitting; However you can take the end caps off and re-grease them. This was on a 95' Ford E-250

I used an old hub bearing, but look around for anything with a cylinder shape and you'll be just fine. I've even used over sized deep axle sockets from time to time to install output shaft seals and in some cases crank shaft timing cover seals.

Tutorial didn't work. I just stared at my fuel tank for 5 minutes as the video shows and the seal is still leaking

Practically. The only thing different is that I'm not laying on the ground. The Process is still the same.
@@JustinDowDIYcentralhighway Yeah if you add a lot of swearing, dirt and limited movement to the process. Suppose it's not that bad if you have a bigger lifted truck or can get it on some bigger jackstands. 😁#liftenvy

You’re aware that will change by year, make, model, trans type,etc right? Easier to be quiet and just show the work so some numbskull doesn’t try to sue for damages.
So no dialog explaining anything and we're a mile away from the focal point of the job being done.

do you really need your hand held that much? knock out the old seal, put the new one in. this video gave me all the info I needed.
Doug dimmadome: yeah, actually I do. I have this exact problem with a derelict truck. I am not a master mechanic, so a little more hand holding would be appreciated.
Hats off to anyone bold enough to put themselves out there to make a tutorial video. However if you're going to make the video, put a little care into it. Show good angles, explain your work....articulately, and act like you care that you're on display. Its a video intended to teach.....so teach.
If I wanted to watch some video of a guy just doing stuff.....well then.....I probably wouldn't.
@@markbrowning4334 I was just messing with you lmao, heres how I took mine out of my 2000 mustang with a gearbox. all I had to do was take a screwdriver and tap it out similar to how he did it in the video, except he has a custom made tool for it, all I did was fuck the seal up a little so I could get the tip of the screwdriver somewhere with leverage, then hit the handle with a big hammer, I used a 32oz ball peen. then with a big ass socket or something similar, tap the new one into place. I'd use a rubber mallet or something when you're putting it in. main thing is just dont be scared of fucking something up or else you'll do a shit job. the only thing to avoid is damaging the aluminum around the seal.
