  • This is a dual leak repair, no Racquetball needed. GM Slip Yoke and shaft seal. This video shows what worked to fix a Chevy transfer case leak. How to replace the transfer case output shaft seal and how to repair a leaking slip yoke plug. How to remove the drive shaft and the transfer case slip yoke on a Chevy Suburban, Tahoe, Yukon or Escalade. How to test a slip yoke for leakage. I waited until the repair had 3,000 miles before uploading this video to demonstrate that this is a durable fix of a slip yoke with a confirmed leak and has not leaked as of four years later. Thanks for watching.

    Exactly what I'm looking at with my 04.5 Silverado. Thanks very much for a short, sweet and fully informational video. I had a professionally rebuilt transfer case last summer and now I've got fluid leaking out of what looks like the seal area. I'm taking it back out to my diesel mechanic (the shop that installed the transfer case) to see what he thinks. But if the fix is this easy, I might do it myself. Although it's in the teens with ice on the ground out there. Thanks very much! Very helpful and not over my head.

    • @ScubaMoto
      @ScubaMoto  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      butchtheiw: Thanks for the kind words. I'm glad you liked the video. Odds are, your mechanic replaced the seal when doing the transfer case rebuild. If not, then the seal may be failed. If the slip yoke leaking, like in the video, it's unlikely your mechanic even knew it was leaking; most don't even know it's an issue. If you clean things up with a degreaser, as shown in the video, you should be able to see if the leak is caused by a failed seal, or by the slip yoke and then proceed accordingly. Thanks again for the comment and for sharing.

    Thx again for the quality clip and tips. Finally did that today as I had to replace both u-joints. Went to my local auto parts store to buy a new seal, only had SKF brand seals. Bought it anyway as I was too lazy to drive a few more miles to the closest GM dealer. Used the can tip to sit the SKF seal in. Never went in and I destroyed the can in the process lol. I simply put original one back in which seems fine anyway despite a very tiny leak. Wasn't leaking after a very short and slow drive after the repair. Dr.shaft was shaking like hell from a shot t-case u-joint. Now that this is fixed, I hope the leak wont come back. Did use the Ultra Blk tip on yoke though. It should help, too. Should have go to the dealership to buy oem seal. When you compare oem seal to skf side by side, the skf does look very cheap. The outer ring is narrower and thinner and inside design is different, too. It was the same size, right part, should have sit properly but didn't. I'm gonna return it. Morale of this story? Use OEM seal.

    Great video! Just what I needed. Thank you! After I noticed the signs of leaking, I changed transfer case fluid. Surprisingly, the fluid level was still at fill plug. Considering a weep hole is built into the seal, is it possible some leakage is expected? Thanks again!

    • @ScubaMoto
      @ScubaMoto  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm glad you liked the video and that it helped. The shaft seal does not have a weep hole. The weep hole is in the rubber splash guard that extends from the actual shaft seal. The hole allows mud and water to to drain out so it doesn't accumulate on the shaft near the seal but mud does often find its way in there. Mud is the most common cause of seal failure since it's just liquid sand paper. If you can rinse inside the splash guard, the weep hole will help you expel debris and water during the rinse to reduce seal exposure to abrasives. I hope that helps and thanks for the comment.

When water makes its way into the rubber guard, you want it all to drain out. The weep hole helps expel the water faster. If the weep hole were on top, it would become an inlet for mud, water and other debris that would now be trapped inside the rubber guard. Thanks for watching and for sharing.

    • @ScubaMoto
      @ScubaMoto  ปีที่แล้ว

      You're welcome. I'm glad it helped. You could probably carefully wedge behind it to pry it out intact but I wonder how well the Permatex Ultra Black would work to just plug the weep hole that you accidentally installed on top and then you could punch a new drain hole on the bottom while the slip-yoke is out. It might save you the risk of damaging it during removal. At least the seals are cheap if you do decide to R and R it and it gets damaged. The shaft in the video only goes one way. It had a wide spline that fits the channel in the slip yoke that you can see at 3:47. I'm not sure if they're all like that. I hope that helps. Good luck with it.

    • @jessemartz

      @@ScubaMoto it appears that’s the case because the mess is located in that area where you perform the leak test. @ScubaMoto  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Brian Tawny: It sounds like you're referring to the outer surface of the slip yoke sliding into the new seal at 5:24 in the video. You'll notice I have it coated with some moly grease to help it slip into the new seal. If it won't slide in, try rotating it until it slides in. Remember that there is one flat spot on the splines that must be lined up with the corresponding grove in the output shaft. That's why I mention the blue dot in the video. If you no longer have an alignment mark, just keep rotating the drive shaft until it lines up with the notch in the output shaft. Then it should slip right on. Let us know how it goes.

      Jesus Ber: Transmission output is different than transfer case. The hole in the center of the slip yoke at the transmission output on your truck is intentional and should not be leaking fluid. It's designed to allow air to pass as the slip yoke slides in and away from the transmission.

    • @ScubaMoto

      The Red and Tacky is just one more option other than molly to pack the splines. We're not working with the transmission, it's the transfer case. The transfer case has no dipstick. The transfer case has an upper (filler hole) and a lower (drain plug). The upper filler hole is the dipstick. Just fill until fluid backs out and then replace the filler plug. The vehicle in the video specs Dexron VI (10-9243) for the transfer case. I hope that helps.

    Hey thanks for the video! I was just curious on how to diagnose that it’s just a leak? My Chevy Tahoe 1999 transfer case is leaking (I think) the service 4WD drive light is on and it makes a noise when shifting from park to drive etc etc. please get back to me thank you! (Subscribed)

    • @ScubaMoto
      @ScubaMoto  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Anthony Rodriguez: I'm glad you liked the video and thanks for subscribing. I miss my '99 Tahoe. To diagnose a leak I look for fluid and if I see it, I trace the location of the source. If there's fluid everywhere and it's hard to tell, then I remove the fluid with an engine cleaner and then watch for the source. If there's fluid visible, you also need to check the level in the case. The top filler hole is the "dip stick". Pull the top plug. If you can't reach fluid with your little finger, then you've lost enough to want to top it off.
      Service 4WD light can happen for other reasons. I had an issue on my '99 that was resolved by replacing the 4WD Transfer Case Encoder Shift Motor Actuator. The selector switches in the cab are also known to cause issues when they get old. If you hear grinding shifting in and out of 4WD then the encoder could be the issue. Let me know what you see down there.
