I got the chance to open for these guys in my hometown of Shakopee Minnesota. I've been playing in bands for ten years and this was the highlight of what I very loosely call my "career"...as I was carrying my stuff back to the car, Don Barnes was just coming out of the bus and saw me walking with my bass on my back and my pedal board case. He went out of his way and kind of trotted towards me and said "Hey, y'all sounded great! Keep on playing man." and I got one of his picks to add to my collection of bands I've played with or whatever. I stayed for their show and was absolutely blown away. All I'm going to say is this: Old, but CERTAINLY not obsolete! These guys kick so much ass live and I was blessed to be part of it just for a moment.
I've always wanted to meet Barnes and the 38 Special gang. They were my first concert WAY back in 1982 at Timberwolf Amphitheatre at Kings Island amusement park just north of Cincinnati, Ohio. Been going to see them every chance I get for the last 42 years. I've seen them from the days of Barnes, Van Zant, Carlisi, Jundstrom, Brookins, and Grondin until now with the current line up. I'm hoping that one day the stars will align and I'll be able to say hello and let Barnes know just how big of an impact their music has had on my life as a 9 y/o at their first concert to a nearly 52 y/o who just absolutely loves their music even to this day.
I saw the Original 38 SPECIAL in the Historic Florida Theater in Jacksonville Florida in 1977.Special Guest Ernie Pilcher's...CURTIS WILLIS BAND. I was 16 probably ...
Aren't they amazing?!? I saw them at the Texas Motor Speedway back in April. They played before the NASCAR race. I figured they'd only play a few songs, but they played an entire set. It was great!

Thank you @MrRipkin for adding the setlist and timecodes! I've been adding them to my more recent concert videos but hadn't gone back to do this one yet! I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
"Chain Lighting" is usually an encore. I've seen them 38 times every time on the front row. I'm actually sitting dead center of this video! TUSCALOOSA, ALABAMA!!! HOME OF MY BAMA BOYS.......ROLL TIDE 🐘🐘🇺🇸🇺🇸
I actually learned from Joe Elliott of def Leppard that it's better about half to 3/4 back is better to hear all the frequencies of the instruments. He's right
Looks like we finally figured out how to SCARE OUR KIDS…. Pretty sure we had/still have the very best MUSIC the WORLD NEEDS…. Rock on…and Thank you for keeping the MUSIC OF LIFE alive & free-spirited.
Wow memories of my teen years, nothing better than 70s and 80s ! Saw that live once and what I would have done to see Lynrd Skynrd back in the day. Thank you for sharing!
Watched 38 Special at "The Venue" at Thunder Valley in Lincoln Ca 7-19-24. I have always loved their music, Watching them live for the first time was mind blowing. The singing and music was spot on. Very talented musicians. The crowd was energized from beginning to end. Buy a ticket and watch this show. You will not be disappointed. Did I mention that Lou Gramm was the opening act? Doesn't get any better than this. It was epic. Go watch 38 Special. Thanks for coming to Lincoln California.
Like many of you.....grew up with this band...finally saw them at the Norfolk Scope in 1983 (ticket $9.50) as a 19 year-old Marine stationed at Yorktown, Virginia....Eddie Money opening act....sure miss Donnie Van Zant.
I've seen them 12x over the yrs the very first time in 79 or 80 they opened for REO and I've never gotten tired of there music I'd go to every show if I could about like seeing Skynyrd 2 of the best southern rock bands.👍🇺🇸🤙
I was the limo driver for 38 Special Oct 21, 1991 Bone against steel tour out in Lancaster Pa. Donny Van Zant, Jeff Carlisi Danny Chauncey, Max ( second chance writer) and Larry the bass player plus the drummer... Drove to 3 local radio stations in Reading and Lancaster 16 hour day for me. Next night was the gig at the Lancaster Days Inn conference center- back stage passes for a friend and I !
One great Band. When I saw them , they really put on a great show. Got there autographs. Great Musicians and great songs. Great live Rock and Roll band. Southern Rock
Saw .38 Special for the first time in a benefit concert in 1975 at the old Gator Bowl in Jacksonville, FL. Don Barnes is the only remaining original member, but he's still kicking it. Keep doing it, DB.
Privileged to see them in The Omni in 1987 Tour de Force & again at Hiawassee Ga in April 2024 . Thank you for the memories and Great Performances ! Come Back to Georgia ! Can't Wait to see you again !
Quel plaisir de retrouver sur scène, et au mieux de leur forme, un de mes groupes favoris que j'écoute depuis bien des années et dont je ne me lasse pas. Merci pour cette vidéo qui n'est pas prête de quitter ma playlist. Keep playing, keep rocking !!!
Bobby Capps! Former college football player and high jumper in the 80s! I jumped against him in high school and missed being a teammate by one year in college. From other teammates' accounts, Bobby's one dream was to play keys for 38 Special!!
To keep on rolling the way they do ,,,, you/they have to have it totally in your/their blood. TOTALLY !!!!!!!. SOOOOO VERY GLAD THEY ARE STILL AROUND AND HAVE NOT PASSED ON BEFORE THEIR TIME. SO HAPPY TO SEE AND HEAR THEM ,,,, REAL GENUINE MUSIC. ❤❤❤❤❤🤗
Well , i think that with a couple of honkettes and some more fireworks that could still touring EUROPE , as far as the band my money is on JERRY RIGGS absolutely monumental , on his guitar style
I've always loved .38 Special, saw them back in the day as Opener and as a Headliner. This version of Dons Band is very tight. Kudos for doing some of Max Carls songs. Right on Don and band!
I far cry from when I saw them several times throughout the early 80's at the Fort Wayne Indiana War Memorial Coliseum. Sad Barnes is the only original member playing in the band now and it shows.
Don Barnes Keeping .38 Special alive in 2024.

Congratulations on 10 years. That's more than many musicians and bands. The pick isn't the major point. Getting props from Don is.

38 Special Always KICKING ASS ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
No Chain Lightning!!! so many good songs!!! Thanks for posting, 38 Special is awesome!!
I think Chain Lightning is the best song they ever did. Criminally under rated.
"Chain Lighting" is usually an encore. I've seen them 38 times every time on the front row. I'm actually sitting dead center of this video! TUSCALOOSA, ALABAMA!!! HOME OF MY BAMA BOYS.......ROLL TIDE 🐘🐘🇺🇸🇺🇸
If they were opening, there was no encore. Chained Lightning is the 1st song to start the encore.
They shouldn't be opening for anyone.
Love they are still performing. We had the best music still going strong. My grandkids know these great bands because it's what grandma listens to.
Saw them on the Special Forces tour, i'll keep that one in my head thanks

This is the .38 Special I grew up with. They lost their way for a while with all the pop stuff. Glad to hear them still playing what made them great.
I had 3rd row seats in the Syracuse area back in 2021. I went by myself & had the best time! “If I’d Been the One” is my favorite from these guys.
Love Don Barnes and .38 Special. And Jerry Riggs is such a handsome cool cat.
Great show!! Don Barnes!!
I seen them in their prime late 80’s with two drummers Anchorage Alaska! Best concert I have ever seen!😉👍
They had a lot more hits than I thought! Lots of great music that brings back memories of dating, racing, friends and weekends!
I saw them open for Skynyrd March 2nd 2004 in Lowell, MA. Amazing show 👏

These are some of my favorites over over the years.
Saw them for the first time back in '82 with Aldo Nova. They still had the two drummers. Saw them again in the early 2000's before Van Zant left.
Wow I saw these guys in Nashville when Huey Lewis and the News opened for them. Both bands were excellent and still are in book!
I’ve seen .38 Special over 30 times, I miss Donny Van Zant and the dual drummers
I don’t care what Don calls his band! At least he’s the lead singer and the band is solid.
I do miss Danny Chauncey though
I see he still has that double cut 1958 junior les paul. I have one.
Privileged to see them in The Omni in 1987 Tour de Force & again at Hiawassee Ga in April 2024 . Thank you for the memories and Great Performances ! Come Back to Georgia ! Can't Wait to see you again !
