Biden Vs The GOP On Covid Relief | Pod Save America

  • President Biden steers his Covid relief plan through bad faith whining about unity, Mitch McConnell tries to prevent Democrats from taking control of the Senate, and the MAGA extremists are winning the Republican civil war. Jon Favreau, Jon Lovett and Tommy Vietor discuss Joe Biden's $1.9 trillion coronavirus bill that includes a $15 minimum wage and vaccine aid. Then, they break down the Senate, the reconciliation process, the filibuster, and Donald Trump's upcoming impeachment trial. Last, they talk about the danger of extremism in the Republican party and its surrounding media apparatus.

Crooked believes that we need a better conversation about politics, culture, and the world around us-one that doesn’t just focus on what’s broken, but what we can do to fix it. At a time when it’s increasingly easy to feel cynical or hopeless, former Obama staffers Jon Favreau, Jon Lovett, and Tommy Vietor have created a place where people can have sane conversations that inform, entertain, and inspire action. In 2017 they started Crooked with Pod Save America-a no-bullshit conversation about politics. Since then, we continue to add shows, voices, and opportunities for activism, because it’s up to all of us to do our part to build a better world. That’s it. End of mission.

I've said this before and I'll say it again...the fact that one vile little turtle man from Kentucky can hold up the running of the entire US Government is so phucking ridiculous it begs the question - are you truly a democracy when the power to halt the passing of legislation rests in the hands of ONE man??
Ps...another brilliant podcast, you friggin geniuses! :-)

@Mark German Mark, first and foremost, I am not a fool I am very aware of the corruption in DC and the states. Secondly, I back Bernie Sanders' ideas about getting money out of politics. Politicians should ONLY be beholden to their constituents NOT big money from corporations and lobbyists. Thirdly, SPEAK UP, MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD and DONATE YOUR TIME AND MONEY (if you can) to candidates that aren't beholden to big money or corporations. Such as AOC and Bernie. I don't reside in their state but I donated to both Dem. candidates in the Georgia runoff election and AOC when she ran. If you don't like goverment...CHANGE IT! Research the candidates, vote and spread the word. I recently relocated to Florida and from listening to Gov. Desantis and watching Senator Gaetz during hearings on C-span I will work my hardist to see them both GONE. WE THE PEOPLE put these croaks in office and if enough people VOTE we can kick them OUT of office.

Be careful about ending the filibuster. What happens when the Republicans win again, which they certainly will. The way I see it, ending the filibuster is bringing in mutually assured destruction. They'll pass a bunch of things the other side doesn't want, and at the end of the day the Democrats are going to have to realize it's their own fault it happened.

Senator Toomey (R-PA) has indicated that the aid should be more directed to those in the most need-especially those who fell through the cracks on the previous two COVID stimulus bills. Restaurants and restaurant workers? Gig workers? People whose incomes have not changed or not changed much (those salaried middle and upper middle class workers in industries who have not been much impacted financially, retirees whose income has not changed due to COVID) should not be receiving checks. There are others I much need. (Note-Biden is our President. He wants to at least give a bipartisan package a try. If they obstruct, are too demanding, then play hard ball.).

Right. Except there’s an argument to be made that sending checks to people who’s incomes may not have been impacted, but are under the limit, they’ll spend that $ on the economy, thus the rescue package also serving as a stimulus in part. I agree with that completely.

How about a death benefit for COVID-19 surviving family members, to bury or cremate their loved ones? Cremation averages around $3500.00. X 400,000 people. I am retired, but my wife passed in May. I have to payoff her car and other bills plus the costs of cremation. And even though she paid into Social Security for 45 years, they give you a one time death benefit of $255. I will be alright financially, but many others will not. I miss her so much. What do we want more, show our juvenile glee at further disgracing someone who's already left in disgrace or actually pushing forward with things like covid relief or stimulus checks? Also, think about the downside. If there aren't Republican votes to convict Trump, he campaigns again and rubs salt in the wound. Imagine how much people are going to hate hearing him say, "They tried to impeach me twice. They failed both times."

End Voter Disenfranchisement (maybe by Enacting Universal Mandatory Voter Registration?); 5. End Winner Take All (maybe 'Ranked Choice Voting' so candidates pander to moderates instead of extremist QAnons?); 6. End Gerrymandering (Have voters select politicians like in UK instead of politicians selecting voters like we do in US); 7. Stop The 2nd Class Citizenship of the Territories (Statehood for DC & a state that combines Puerto Rico & US Virgin Islands). America needs to say "Bye Felicia" to these undemocratic institutions.

They’re not. Most of it is direct deposit. Talking about checks is just a way of talking about it, the vast majority don’t use actual paper checks. Those that do are people who have elected to receive tax refunds that way, most likely because they don’t have a checking account.

I received all stimulus checks as as a direct deposit. I believe if taxpayers filed their annual tax return online, a direct bank account information was included in the tax return WHICH permits future federal payments to be a direct deposit. Maybe a IRS expert can confirm my understanding that the majority receiptents receive direct deposits.
