Well there is a reason why Jack Nicholson has 3 Best Actor Oscars.
my favorite bit of trivia about the making of this movie is the fact that the actor (wolfgang bodison) that played 'Dawson' was reiner's personal assistant and never acted before this film. reiner had trouble casting for the Dawson role and went with his instincts and decided to give the role to bodison. he was phenomenal on his first job :)
Clearly the 1990s was the GREATEST decade for movies. It gave us Shawshank Redemption, Forrest Gump, Jurassic Park, A Few Good Men and about a dozen other greats. Thanks for a great reaction to an all time great film.

The 80’s. In fact 1984 had so many great movies come out that year there’s probably not one movie in the 90’s that can beat it.

12 Angry Men is a absolute must in the courtroom genre
Absolutely right. The classic _'12 Angry Men'_ with Henry Fonda & others is great.
The ultimate rebel Jack Nicholson has a ball playing the ultimate establishment figure in this star-laden, rather old-fashioned courtroom drama.
Another good courtroom drama is "Runaway Jury" with Gene Hackman, Dustin Hoffman, and John Cusack; presented much differently than normal courtroom films. A really good underrated movie.
Definitely a must watch, along with The Rainmaker, both based on John Grisham novels.

A MUST watch when it comes to Air-Force/Navy Pilots, Test Pilots and USA's first Astronauts is "The Right Stuff" from 1983. Fantastic cast. Great script and it won like 4 Oscars. It's the MOST expensive history lesson you will have ever.

Wolfgang Bodison, who played Lance Corporal Dawson, was a Location Scout working for Rob Reiner. He'd never acted before this movie, but Reiner decided he'd be perfect for the roll. Boy, did he make a good choice!
All time classic movie. Tom Cruise might be nuts but he's one hell of an actor and makes incredible movies. Check out The Last Samurai if you haven't before!

Kevin Pollack adds so much to this movie. This is my favorite movie of all time. Also, if no one has said it yet, the lawyer in the bar telling someone he will make him go blind on paperwork is the writer Aaron Sorkin. There is a mistake in the movie that I can't unsee now every time I watch. When Jessup is leaving to go to his base and gets stopped by the mps he is wearing a tie. Later in the same scene he isn't, then it comes back.
Loved your faces during the crucial scene...😄😄 Nicholson did 10 days work and was paid $5 million. Jack Nicholson kept up the same intensity in every take. He was on the set when the other actors were being filmed in their shots in the courtroom, feeding them his lines off screen. He played his role exactly the same off screen. Rob Reiner took him aside and said that he could keep some of his intensity for when he was being filmed but Jack explained 'Rob, I just love to act...: and did it the same way over and over and over.
You need to see the classic movie _'Judgment at Nuremberg'_ from 1961.
It exemplifies why "I was just following orders" is not recognized as a legitimate defense.

Military film recommendation: Both the 1976 AND the 2019 versions of _'Midway.'_
Details that are left out of the 1976 film are covered in the 2019 film and vice-versa.
So, watching both films gives you a pretty complete understanding of the battle.

Loving these BLTN reactions. Courtroom dramas you need to check out next are "A Time to Kill", "12 Angry Men", "Erin Brockovich" and "The Rainmaker". That final shot always takes me back to the great movies from the past that ended with amazing music and "The End" showing up.

Nice job done by Wolfgang Bodison, playing Lance Cpl. Dawson. He was working a few background production assistant jobs and Rob Reiner had the idea to cast him as Dawson. He's remained successful as an actor/writer/director type.
That one scene just leaves you speechless and stunned.
I was an active duty Marine from 1986 to 1992 - I spent most of my time at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba. What a wonderful place to be, oh man! This movie is an exaggeration, a stereotype for sure. I saw the film crew for this movie shortly before I came home, most of it was not filmed at Gitmo. Great movie!

Jack Nickolson has such an intimating attitude and stare that makes you back off but I loved how Tom Cruise's character was able to make him tell the truth in the end
Two of my favorite court room movies are "The Verdict" with Paul Newman and "And Justice For All" with Al Pacino.
This an awesome movie. I've watched it a bunch of times and never get tired of it. I saw on your poll you showed you had "Arlington Road' on it. It's a movie I think that most people don't know but it's a very good drama with an incredible ending. You really owe it to yourselves to watch it even if it doesn't get voted on, because like I said a lot of people are just unfamiliar with it. I think mostly because the title doesn't really evoke a strong reaction thinking it might be boring but it's not. A really good watch.
Vanessa is the one who hasn't seen it. We'll get to it eventually. And when we do, that ending will BLOW HER AWAY!

The film is a testament that you don't need flashy action scenes to create constant tension and get the audience's heart rate racing! Great film, superb performances by Nicholson and Cruise and the rest of the fine cast. You guys have probably had it recommended already, but you should check "The Verdict" of 1982 with the legend Paul Newman. Excellent court room drama. As for military films, ok I ll go with something very unconventional. "Come and See". Cheers from Athens!
The producers wanted a love story between Cruise and Moore. But the two power house actors refused. Stating this story can stand on its own. And it does.

I believe this has also been set as a stage play.
What makes this movie more realistic for me is it shows the truth of serving so many young men swear oaths and sign their lives away for the belief they are serving something greater than themselves but far too many of the people who end up controlling their fate don't have any intention of living up to those same oath's. Too many officers believe the men they are entrusted to command are less important than them and their careers so are more than happy to abuse their authority and power in order to !make themselves look good at the expense of their troops quality of life mental health time with family or even their lives.
Honestly "YOU'RE DAMN RIGHT I DID" always hit stronger for me than "you can't handle the truth!", Jack's blow up energy is the best, I know the truth quote is well written, I just get more excited hearing the other line

the Colonel might uses words like honor, code, and loyalty, but he missed integrity. Without integrity you don't have the rest, these morals rely on each other. Without integrity, you have a unit with immorality, hypocrisy, and ultimately corruption.
I saw this movie a few (good) times when it first came out, and I had Jack Nicholson's big courtroom diatribe locked into my brain after only a few (good) viewings. I've been able to repeat the entire thing without effort for thirty years now, it's like muscle memory at this point. But this reaction video is actually the first time that I noticed that the cinematographer was Robert Richardson, who has shot several Quentin Tarantino and Oliver Stone films. He has a distinct lighting setup where a very bright white light will shine down on the tops of actors' heads. Funny how I never spotted that before.
Apparently Nicholson did his courtroom speech in one take. Other actors who were off that day or not in the scene came in just to watch his performance.

Great reaction! If you take recommendations, courtroom dramas don’t come better than The Verdict (1982) with the great Paul Newman. He plays a washed-up alcoholic attorney who gets a case that could turn his life around, but he’s woefully unprepared for a complicated case against a very powerful law firm. Like I said…one of the greatest ever made.
Saw this on Broadway its frist run w Tom Hulce in Cruise's role. It was snappier, wittier, and fierce, but each approaches it very differently. I forget his name, but the officer who kills himself was also in the stage production and he ripped my heart out w his final scene.

Jessup looked at the idea of transferring Santiago as something that would look negatively on him. That he had failed to turn this kid into a real marine. So he let his ego get in the way and it cost Santiago his life. He also sacrificed Dawson and Downey to his ego.

Jack Nicholson's voice was heavily imitated in 1980s with cartoon characters like Shipwreck on "G.I.Joe," who was also inspired by his look in "The Last Detail," and Sly Rax in "M.A.S.K."
Another one that tops the charts (although possibly courtroom adjacent) is the original 12 Angry Men (not the remake). Excellent writing, acting, and directing in an ensemble film.
This was Aaron Sorkins first written playwright, and then made into movie, Sorkins writing is just poetry 😂😂
Trial of the Chicago Seven on Netflix is a good follow up.
I really like Heartbreak Ridge with Clint Eastwood. It's not a courtroom move, just a war/military movie with a tiny bit of romance thrown in.
This was made as a play originally. Fun Fact: Rob Lowe played "Lt. Kaffee" in London for over a year. You can imagine that. Please Watch: "The Outsiders" a lot of good actors in that one.

Marine veteran here. This is one of the few military-themed films I enjoy. The story was great. The conviction on Unbecoming unfair, but not unexpected. The representation of the Marines in this though is probably the closest to the reality I experienced in the Corps. Kevin Bacon's military alignment was really good. I've known several First Lieutenants (and Captains) that were Keifer Sutherland all day. (Even a few butterbars like him, which brings back some comedic memories.) I took a Sergeant board in front of the 11th Marines Regimental Commander who, had he personally advised Jack Nicholson, I wouldn't be surprised. And I spent my last two years in the Corps at HQMC at Henderson Hall in Arlington, VA so the landscape was extremely familiar. All-in-all, Sorkin, the producers and director did a really nice job at creating a realistic environment.
Full Metal Jacket on the other hand, is a travesty on the accuracy scale. R. Lee Ermy is fantastic and, as a former DI, he knew his role perfectly. But everyone else in the film is awful and the entire second half seems to have been written and directed by someone who hadn't spent 30 seconds around an actual Marine. It's as if they watched a bunch of Hollywood military film garbage and decided to one-up them all in ridiculousness. It's not even a case of poetic license; it's closer to recruiting a commune of hippie conscientious objectors from 1967 to write the screenplay and deciding, "Yup, they'd know better than anyone." So as long as you keep that in mind and take it purely with a truckload of salt, you'll be fine and it'll pass as entertainment. Lots of people really like it, but I've never known a Marine who likes anything about it, aside from Ermy's character.

Hey, fellow Tucson people! So glad to be able to watch your reaction to this masterpiece. I worked at the Century Park 12 (later 16) in the early and mid nineties when it was unrivaled for movie presentation in Tucson - Even had one 70mm projector. It was so awe inspiring to see Jack Nicholson's face cropped at the wrinkled forehead on one of those massive parabolic screens in one of those 4 giant domes that anchored the facility. We employees saw all the new movies on Thursday night after midnight before their Friday debuts (not make sure the film was spliced and built up properly, ostensibly) and those parties were the single biggest fringe benefit to working there. I also worked Jurassic Park, Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Pulp Fiction, Wayne's World, Star Trek: Generations, Casino, Natural Born Killers, Batman Returns, Mission Impossible (1996), and countless others.
I wonder, did you two ever see movies there? It's now demolished in favor of a Yaqui Casino, of course. Also, did you know that before the Century Park, that property (Fairview off of Grant) was the Tucson 5 Drive In? I saw the Theatrical Re-Release of Star Wars there in 1978, having seen it the year before during its first run at the old El Dorado next to Park Mall at age 5 (Park Mall and El Con were the only malls at the time). Anyway, there's something indelible about seeing that grand starscape, those crawling credits and the desert planet below framed in the starry desert sky with "A" Mountain and the Tucson Mountains on the horizon. Of course, I would never go back to those speakers clipped to the half-rolled down window, not once we got THX Dolby Surround Sound in those domes.
But enough about Star Wars. Love your channel, so proud to be represented by you in the "reactor space".
Oh man, we miss Century Park so much! We saw SO MANY of our favorite films there for the first time! That was our go to theater! So glad you found us!

Great reaction guys !!! I'd like to suggest another courtroom thriller "A TIME TO KILL" based on the John Grisham thriller novel. Stars Matthew McConnahey, Samuel L. Jackson, Sandra Bullock, Ashley Judd, Kevin Pollock, Charles S.Dutton, Donald and Kieffer Sutherland plus many many more. This movie for decades, as a father....You must ask yourself. "What would I have done?" Equal memorable courtroom dialog as what we just watched. McConnahey Bullock and Jackson at their best acting EVER !!!!

Conduct Unbecoming - a British movie with mostly British actors (Michael York, Richard Attenborough, Trevor Howard, Susannah York), but including American Stacy Keach, and Canadian Christopher Plummer.
The performances in this film are strong across the board.
The number of courtroom films are legion. Some of the best include: Witness for the Prosecution (1957), To Kill a Mockingbird, Inherit the Wind (featuring an acting dual between two of the greatest actors in screen history), Adam's Rib, Twelve Angry Men (1957), Anatomy of a Murder, The Caine Mutiny, and A Matter of Life and Death (aka Stairway to Heaven),
I'd add Judgment at Nuremberg, A Time to Kill, and maybe Runaway Jury to that list.
I would add Runaway Jury... Gene Hackman and Dustin Hoffman give epic performances
One movie you should watch is Sleepers. It has another great cast.
I'd love a reaction to a Tom Cruise drama that almost no reactors have done. (It's also adjacent to military, war and biographical films.) BORN ON THE FOURTH OF JULY.
This was a stage production that was converted into a film. It is a bit old school of how a lot of movies use to be.

I'd consider this up there with movie like Rain Man and The Firm as 1 of Tom Cruise's best acting in movies and also best movies. Speaking of The Firm, did you ever watch that Tom Cruise film? Crimson Tide is another movie that immediately comes to mind as far as incredible acting and high stakes tense drama.
We supposed to fight for Will....is unintentionally funny statement when the scene is supposed to be compassionate one.

Stay tuned for the follow up movie "A Few Good Men Part II". Col. Jessep seeing what a good lawyer Danny is hires him to represent him for his trial. Danny successfully plea bargains the case down to 6 months probation and conduct unbecoming an officer, which results in Danny finally earning himself those steak knives. Col. Jessep after finding himself court martialed teams up with Harold and Louden to open a hot dog stand on the streets of Washington.
Tom Cruise is my favourite actor,I don’t care about of screen rubbish that is his business.

Since you just watched a movie involving military justice. You will love the miltary who done it. A Soilder Story. Great cast. I would love to see you guys reaction to this play turned into a fiture film. A Soilder Story.
If you want to do another great and pretty accurate court room drama. Watch “The Rainmaker” it’s an adaptation of a John Grisham novel of the same name starring a young Matt Dameon and Danny DeVito, and Jon Voight. It’s so good.

I like that two attractive leads could interact as professionals without falling in bed together. Not very common for Hollywood.

Erin Brockovich is a great one for some court scenes but mostly for court prep work.
A few interesting tidbits about this movie, this was actually loosely based off of a true story. However in real life the victim didn’t die & there were 10 Marines who carried out the Code Red. 7 of them took plea deals & three actually went to trial. They won at trial and they actually stayed on active duty. It’s believed that the Downey (the white Marine) character was loosely based off of one marine who was from Maryland who was found murdered a year or two after this movie came out. His murder was never solved & was featured on Unsolved Mysteries.
He didn't want to transfer the marine, Because that would just be moving a "weak link " elsewhere in the Corps. He wanted to fix the problem not sweep it under the carpet so to speak, But obviously it's not a good way to go about it and because of the marine's underlying health problems resulting in a death & resultant coverup, Brought the whole edifice down...
It's in my top 5 favorite movies...
