People rewatch The Exorcist year after year not because they will ever experience a real exorcism, but they will experience the death of one or both of their parents. The Karras side of the story is what people relate to and why they'll watch the Exorcist over and over again like "The Seventh Seal". The exorcism is just a metaphor for the guilt that Karras, and most people, experience from the death of a parent. That makes The Exorcist more than just a horror movie, it's also one of the few outstanding existential films in the history of cinema.
A worthy sequel is "Exorcist 3".
After 50 years, The Exorcist is still scaring us.

Max von Sydow was actually only 43 when he filmed the exorcist. Dick smith the MUA was known for his aging makeup effects. He was responsible for the spinning head too.
The "help me" skin scene is really creepy when you consider that in the book Sharon tells him "It's Reagan's handwriting."
That scene where the detective is sitting in his car watching the house, looking up at Reagan's bedroom window he sees her shadow move past it. That's impossible considering at the time she was strapped to the bed. Those little touches is what make this movie special so creepy!
That little scene always creeped me out bust most reactors do not mention it.
There’s so many subtleties in the movie that it definitely takes a few viewings to really catch everything. It’s without a doubt one of the best movies of all time. Unlike most movies today The Exorcist has incredible character development and an incredible slow burn where the intensity builds with every scene.
It is a bit similar to Psycho window little old lady go past the window but she's dead
Kudos to you for calling out that the demon wanted Karras all along. There is nothing more tempting for a demon than a priest who's lost their faith.

Fun fact that almost everyone misses:
The demon wanted to physically show Regan's mom what it did to Burke by pretending it was a version of Burke who was sour at Regan for killing him.
In Burke's voice after showing her what it did to Burke's head: "Do you know what she did? Your cunting daughter?"
Another honorable mention: In the book, they find red paint under Regan's bed after the priest finds the defiled statue.
Nominated for 10 Oscars including Best Picture, but won for Best Sound Editing and Best Adapted Screenplay
RIP, William Friedkin, 1937-2023, for bringing us this terrifying motion picture.
Fun fact: The Exorcist spider walk scene, initially deleted from the film's release, was restored later, delighting fans who consider it a favorite sequence. Director William Friedkin felt the scene was a big special effect too early in the story, but later reinserted the scene using CGI to erase wires

Regan's head never actually turned around (both times). If you remember, Merrin said that the demon's attack is psychological. It was to attack Chris and Karras.
My parents first date was this movie.
It was a double date with another couple who are also still married to this day.
My mother on the other hand was furious because she was itching to see this movie and her friend Angela ran out screaming just as it was getting good and wouldn't go back in so my mother stayed with her and missed the rest of the film calming her down.
My father and his friend just left them to it and watched the rest of the movie. 😂
In my childhood one of my funniest memories was overhearing them arguing about it even in the 80's with my dad maintaining he was simply making sure he got value for his money and at that point the movie had sucked him in with my mother calling him an uncaring cheapskate and she should have married the caring male usher who gave them free tea and tissues for Angela while they waited for the film to finish and their future husbands to finally join them but by the end they would both be laughing

I remember when this came out. Many women came out sitting in the lobby , crying , some fainted and the ambulance even had to be called for the women.
It's a real testament to the makers of this film that 50 years after its release, it can still shock and unnerve folks. And doesn't Ellen Burstyn give a phenomenal performance? Her character's inner turmoil is palpable. And Mercedes McCambridge's vocal performance as Pazuzu is Oscar worthy.

Max Von Sydow was only in his 40s when the played Merrin. When he returned as a younger Merrin in 1977's EXORCIST II: THE HERETIC he didn't need the makeup to look older.

In the novel, Lt. Kinderman showed up at the McNeil house to arrest Regan for the murder of Burke Dennings, right as Kerris threw himself out of the window. After he saw Regan, he pieced together what occurred and actually ended up covering up the details for Chris and Regan's privacy.

Also in the novel, whenever Regan's head would "spin", it was described as an illusion that the demon would project at people in order to elicit shock and fear. When Chris saw this, she was so jarred that she fainted.

At the beginning of the film, Father Merrin uncovers the head of a little figurine of the demon Pazuzu, whom he recognized because he had previously exorcised the demon several years before. So then he has a premonition later that another battle with Pazuzu is coming, with the clock randomly stopping and him almost getting ran over by the carriage. So to confirm his suspicions he goes to some old ruins where there is an old statue of Pazuzu and knows for certain when he sees the dogs fighting each other (the dogs of war have been unleashed). The dissolve to Georgetown right after is to show you where this battle between good and evil is going to take place. Father Merrin periodically takes nitroglycerin pills to keep from having a heart attack, which he dies from at the end when the pills run out.
I still think the most impressive part of this film is Max Von Sydow’s age makeup. It’s so good people don’t even notice it. Viewers legit think he’s actually an old man but he’s 43.
The Exorcist is so much more than just a horror film. It is not only a horror film but rather a film that depicted horrific events. It is uneasy suspense with a buildup that emotionally explodes. Its great story telling with incredible raw performances by all. It's horror/drama that is serious, relentless, and powerful. It's about doubt, faith, guilt, sacrifice, desperation, love, redemption, heartbreaking loss and science versus the human condition.
A mother who has no religious beliefs, desperately seeks help from a guilt ridden priest who has lost his faith. The movie won the Oscar for best screenplay for good reasons.
Max von Sydow was actually in his early 40s for the making of this movie. He is wearing what is argued to be the best old age makeup ever put to film contested only next to Amadeus. Both were done by the legendary makeup artist Dick Smith using an old age makeup technique that he invented.
I was 21 when the movie was released. Its interesting to note that the ouija board was just another board game that didn't amount to much until this movie and then everyone became very leery about having one in their house. The demon that possesses her is Pazuzu, the Mesopotamian demon of the west wind. According to lore, he was so evil that even the other demons were afraid of him.
However, the identity of the antagonist is never actually revealed, not in the film nor in the book. I think that there are reasons to question the assumption that it's Pazuzu - for instance, like many other ancient deities and spirits, Pazuzu wasn't _pure_ evil. Even generally benevolent deities could have a dark side and vice versa when more destructive entities were concerned. In fact, Pazuzu was protective of mothers, which doesn't correspond very well with what we see in the film. The book and film both mentions "Evil against Evil", referring to Pazuzu's role as a protector against other, even more destructive spirits. I feel that the deity/malevolent spirit Lamashtu might be a more likely candidate. She enjoyed torturing mothers, for instance by kidnapping their children. Incidentally, she was also Pazuzu's arch-nemesis and the latter was sometimes called upon specifically in order to receive protection against Lamashtu. Don't get me wrong, Pazuzu can hardly be called a good guy, but how mythology describes him doesn't really match what we see in the film/book. Of course, Blatty might have thought "demons are demons" and simply ignored the ancient lore, but given the various details in the book and obvious research involved I kind of doubt that.
As I understand it, Blatty deliberately left the identity of the antagonist ambiguous.
Highly recommend part 3!!!! The theatrical cut not directors!

I'll 2nd this. Exorcist 3 is legit. One of my favorite movies.
This is my favorite horror movie and it’s still scary to this day. What a legacy it’s had the last fifty years.
The scene where the first priest is introduced to Reagan while she's strapped to the bed and the demon says, "The exorcism will bring us together" The demon gave us a hint as to how the movie would end.

This remains one of my all-time favorite scary movies.
I was born in 77, after it's original 73 release. But I saw it the the theaters when it was re-released in 2000. After seeing this on the big screen, I stick to watching this particular movie on a tv.
Fun Fact: This movie was nominated for 10 Academy Awards. And won 2 for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Sound.
I highly recommend checking out the book. It's a great read.

I always thought Calus's death would count more as a sacrifice to save an innocent than a simple self-unaliving.
Also, the scene where Regan has the MRI, the doctor actually put the port in Linda's neck. That wasn't a special effect.

This movie was the first one to use the Ouija board as possibly something more sinister than the parlor game, now it's a genre standard. before this you'd catch glimpses of it as set decoration of mediums and fortune tellers in movies and tv shows.

AWSOME reaction by you two! I was a tuff high school football player going to watch this at the cinema by myself. I drove 15 miles home with the car doors locked scared shitless. Now at 66 I realize it was so disturbing and uncomfortable to think about at that time.... heck it still is! Peace from Northern Michigan.

Pretty sure it was said on one of the comments but Max Von Sydow was actually 43 when he made this and the Godfather of Makeup Dick Smith (who also did The Godfather 1 & 2, Taxi Driver, Amadeus) aged him. It’s just crazy that Max basically did age into looking like that makeup and same when Dick aged David Bowie on The Hunger.

One of my favorite moments is a very tiny nod to the role of the demon of this film - Pazuzu. Pazuz was the King of the Demons of Wind. He would often offer you protection from other demons (of course at a cost) - hence the Evil versus Evil comment. But an awesome cinematic moment happens at 4:02 when Ft. Merrin pulls the head of the statue of Pazuzu from the hole - a gust of wind blows.
I also recently visited the house and stairs after going to the 50th anniversary screening in celebration of the new 4k release. The movie came out when I was 9 years old and even the TV and radio ads terrified me.
Pantera got the name of their classic album VULGAR DISPLAY OF POWER from the Exorcist 🎉
Great reaction. It's just too bad you saw this AFTER all of the parodies that made fun of it. Because of that, you will never take it in the context in which it was meant. A great loss on your part unfortunately.
It's tough to be scared of a wolf if you grew up playing with a wolf puppy and making fun of wolves in cartoons before you meet an actual wolf.
But if you meet a wolf in the wild, only knowing how it can tear apart a moose in 5 minutes with a few friends, it can be a long ways away from you and the chill will go down your neck and back and you might start to shake and feel like puking when your eyes meet.
I'm glad at least a few parts seem to have shaken you.

You need to skip all other Exorcist movies and watch Exorcist 3:Legion. The guy that wrote the 1st wrote & directed it. The studio did take it away from him for the ending.
the voice of the demon was actually done by an old lady who could throw her voice so it sounded like two voices.

Because of this movie, the first time i tried acid, i freaked out and believed I was being possessed by the devil. Everything from crying, growling, and begging my poor gf, who took some too to pray for me😅
VANESSA: I was 20 in 1973 when I watched The Exorcist on the big screen in a terrific theater in Hollywood (great sound & projection) with a sold-out audience. I've watched at least some of every Exorcist reaction video I have found on TH-cam - maybe 30. Yours is one of the better ones. Nonetheless, there are several things reactors your age usually miss because of your youth. For example: In 1973, instead of stints, heart doctors gave their patients tiny white Nitro Glycerin pills in tiny metal containers to put under their tongues when having chest pains, to open the flow of blood to and from their heart to stop an impending heart attack, as Father Merrin did in the first and last scenes. It was the movie's way of telling us that Father Merrin had a serious heart condition the demon would later exploit to cause Father Merrin to have a fatal heart attack. Being the first movie about demonic possession, we 1973 audiences went into seeing it knowing nothing about exorcisms, much less, believing in the possibility of demonic possession. All that most of us knew was that it was based on a true story - unlike all the terrible sequels. We 1973 audiences weren't desensitized to the graphic violence, sexual depravity, or the special effects in The Exorcist. This was the first horror movie with great actors portraying the reaction of the characters to the horrifying events in the movie as real people would in real life. That made it all seem more real. Combined, all of the above made The Exorcist the scariest & best horror movie for us 1973 audiences before, after, or that we will ever see. One last thing: Watching the movie in a darkened theater with frightened people running out during the movie, instead of doing a reaction video wherein your mind must jump from the movie to thinking about what you are going to say about it, interrupting the momentum of the movie with your commentary as you must because you're doing a reaction video, also made the movie far scarier than it can possibly be doing or watching a reaction video. As I said, this Exorcist reaction video is one of the better ones. Thank you.
Wow, I couldn't of said it better. It scared me to death as a hs junior watching it. But watching something to respond is viewed differently than just to enjoy... but I still like to see if their faces for laughs. Peace from Northern Michigan.
Yes, Robert they did film it in a freezer. They kept the room at a brisk 10F and occasionally lower.

My aunt took me to a drive in theatre with a bunch of her friends where this movie was featured. I was 10 years old. The mosquitos in Florida suck.(lol)

If you take notice on the left hand side of Regans bed when she’s stabbing herself with the crucifix, you can see feet, that is most likely the butler Karl that got knocked out by the demon!
I had to wait until I was 14 to see this on HBO, but I got to see Exorcist II: The Heretic in a theater, and Exorcist III at a drive-in.
Part II stars Linda Blair, Richard Burton, James Earl Jones, Max von Sydow, and Louise Fletcher.
Part III stars Brad Dourif, Jason Miller, and George C. Scott taking over the role of the detective.
For scariness this movie is still top-tier.
This movie gets better when you're not breaking the tension every twenty seconds with jokes and references. More importantly, horror movies are better when you don't emotionally distance yourself from the characters by focusing on effects and behind the scenes stuff _while_ watching it.
Most of the appeal of reaction channels is taking the feeling of sharing a movie you love with a friend who hasn't seen it, delivering that feeling more efficiently, and on demand.
Now imagine if you're trying to share a movie you love with a friend and they won't shut up and actually watch the movie because "you're here to watch me talk." That is frustrating.
Yeah, I've lost interest.
We're not like every reaction channel though. That's what makes our channel ours. These are our personalities, and this is what you're always going to get.
@@LatetotheParty You are very much like a bunch of the newer wave "you come to watch me put on a show" style of reaction channels. I've actually heard the "watch the movie silently" quip you said at the beginning a _bunch_ of times. And not from you.
My original comment is meant to illustrate that there is a difference between the "punchline every minute and a half" approach, and the non-existent "watch someone stare in silence" genre you're imagining.
But honestly, it's all just my opinion. For all i know, you're doing it exactly right and my tastes are just weird.
@@LatetotheParty I am a long-time subscriber and this is not what we always get. In the past, at least, it was not a comedy talk show. Especially not during dramatic horror shows which are not meant to be funny. As the OP said, the appeal of reaction channels is to get as close to experiencing the show again for the first time. And that is not what we are getting. This was very disturbing and frightening movie, especially for a lot of people who grew up in religious households.
It's a personal opinion. Maybe you've grown so large that subscriber opinions and constructive criticism no longer matter. ::shrugs::

"The Exorcism of Emily Rose" is my favorite movie of this type. It shows a more realistic depiction of an actual (alleged) possession. And is based on a true story. Definitely worth a watch for those who haven't seen it
The exorcist is also based on a true story...but it wasn´t a little girl, it was a little boy instead
It is generally though by fans that the head turning is a demon induced hallucination. The book suggests it (not explicitly though).

Parents wouldn’t allow a viewing of this upon its release: too young & as Catholics they probably thought it sacrilegious and/or obscene. My first viewing was an edited version on cable. Still scared this (still then) Catholic shitless!

Max von Sydow was 44 when he made this movie. The reason he looks old is because Dick Smith is a makeup genius.
This is mostly about a Police-Detective trying to start a Movie-Reaction channel with a Priest. Also: Max von Sydow "Merrin" was only 10 years older than "Father Karras". Exorcism that! :-)

Skip the second sequel, but definitely watch the third, and also watch Father Maron’s origin story (sort of), “Exorcist: The Beginning”
I remember seeing the director's cut in theaters and I was the only one saying it that night. But I was wondering if you guys are going to go see the new one when it comes out because I will love to hear your review on it and hear what you have to say about it. But the director's cut is more scarier than the original one
After 50 years, The Exorcist is still the most shocking horror film ever. They really defined what demon possession looks like and feels like on film. No other film has come close.
That being said, you should totally check out The Exorcist Part III. It reveals what happens to Father Karras after his fall. Both Karras and Merrin were truly self-sacrificing heroes.
Now you need to watch one called "Dominion; Prequel to the Exorcist."
It stars Stellan Skarsgard as Father Merrin, and explains his backstory concerning the relationship between him and the Demon Pazuzu.

I think when the bishop asked Damian if he believed that she was really possessed I would've told his ass to go get a gander at her and to bring every fucking priest he knew in New York and I would've called the Pope himself and had him attend 😜
"It'll bring us closer together." And it did.
1. I was 13 when I saw this in the theater with friends. What rating system they had at the time wasn't really followed that closely. By word of mouth, I was aware of the head spinning, vomiting and language but what freaked me the most were the demon flashes.😱
2. When the doctor is looking at Regan's skull x-ray and says, "Nothing in there" I always 🤣
3. The spider-walk down the stairs was NOT in the original release.
4. The loud banging with the medical equipment is for our benefit.
5. Father Merrin and the demon/Pazuzu had a previous encounter where he almost killed the father. Merin doesn't acknowledge the receipt of the note and tells Karras there's no need for analysis.
6. Chris MacNeil/Ellen Burstyn actually broke her coccyx when the demon makes her hard fall. The pain on her face is real.
7. The demon doesn't kill Merrin. From the beginning we know he has a heart problem, most likely brought on by the previous encounter.
8. Karras doesn't kill the demon. He does manage to draw it out of her and sacrificed himself for her.
9 Karras is confessing and asking for forgiveness for his loss of faith.

In my country, This film never came out in theaters because it was banned for its risque scenes. Later, the ban was removed and it reached digital platforms. For example, the normal, censored version of The Exorcist is exclusively on Prime and The extended uncensored version is exclusive for HBO Max streaming and Apple TV iTunes for purchase!

I thought I wasn't going to enjoy this reaction but glad I stuck around past the puerile jokes as you got more into the movie.
Also agree the 70. and 80's was golden era of cinema with ground breaking movies be they horror, SciFi or just drama, and are still inspiring movie makers today.
It was much the same for music.
Only the technical stuff is better these days IMO.

We switched to headsets so we could hear eachother better while watching the movie.
Medical procedures have come a long way, hard to believe that was they way things were at the time, before MRIs, Taking your temperature, etc.
Fyi, The Exorcist 3 , deals with the posessed father.
Brilliant reaction. There is a spoof of The Exorcist from 1990 known as Repossessed which also starred Linda Blair and also stars Leslie Nielsen.
It's certainly worth a watch especially with Linda Blair in the movie as it is said that she enjoyed making the film compared to what she went through in The Exorcist.
In the original theatrical version, there were a couple of confusing things. One being that when Father Karras visited his mother, it was never specified where she lived. If i remember correctly, she lived in NYC. The subway you saw him in was NY. The other scene at the party where Regan says "You're gonna die up there", people didn't really know who she was talking to or maybe what she meant. Since Burke died up upstairs, some viewers thought she was talking to him, but he had already left the party. She was talking to the tall guy on the left with the drink in his hand. He was an astronaut. Regan meant that he was going to die up there in space. We never found out if he did or not. Can't remember if it was specified in the novel.
At the gathering at Chris’s house, there is a brief moment of the astronaut talking to a guest about going up in space. It’s so fast that audiences miss it.

Great reaction to a classic! I think the directors cut is much better than the original. The reason the sound effects were so unnerving is because they used the sounds of pigs being slaughtered and angry bees for some of the demon sounds. Our subconcious knows its bad, we just can't place why, so it puts us on edge. The voice of the demon was done by Mercedes McCambridge who was in many radio dramas back in the day. She chain smoked on top of having chronic emphysema to condition her voice for the part🤮
My mom and her sister took us kids to a drive in movie theater about a year after this came out. I was around 11 at the time. We were absolutely terrified! This movie shaped my love for the horror movie genre and my love of demonic possession horror movies. There's been a few pretty good possession movies but none come close to The Exorcist! It's amazing that this film still holds up.
62nd I saw that when it came out - I was 13 in 73.....ahh yeah, the Catholic church was pissed off too....Fkm.....the new one Looks good and Ellen Burstyn is in it, and she wouldn't associate herself with Trash...Im gonna check it out
They Actually Aged Max UP for his role here as he was only 40 so used old age stipple and makeup to make him look older
3 with Brad Dourif is hilarious
This movie is based on a true story. A boy was possessed by a demonic entity. It is terrifying. The Band Black Sabbath saw the movie and they were so terrified by it. They had to watch another movie to calm down. Linda Blair was excellent as Regan. It is ghoulish without the use of too many jump scares.
