Had the privilege of being driven around Thruxton by Tiff in an M4. He was 69 years old but all the magic was still there. Epic car control and a bloody nice bloke to boot! Long may he continue
Tiff Needell - my favourite presenter in the 90's, he was able to do literally anything with street and race cars within the laws of physics, parallelly talking and explaining in the most professional way. I wish he could keep his spirited driving and personal style for some more decades! :)
Tiff Needell is one of the best, if not the best car journalists in the English speaking world. Definitely much better than of the old TG trio. His racing driver experience (not unlike Chris Harris) provides a unique understanding of what to focus on and what not when talking on a car. His down to earth personality, his character of a true gentleman do the rest. Always enjoy watching him.
I'd take an F50 over an F40 everytime !!! I think over time people have realised what an epic car it is. It was always going to struggle following the F40 but nowadays I think it's respected as a drivers car way more than when it was launched. It's a stunner and I'd say it has the best wheels on any car ever !!! Love it ❤
Same here. It's about the purest driving experience you can get. The closest to an actual F1 car, back in the 90's. How people can rave about the 355 as the best car ever and then knock the F50 is beyond me. I've always considered the 355 a sort of baby brother to the F50. V8 instead of V12, but with 5 valves, a glorious sound and a telepathic gas response
The styling is much more divisive, and a lack of improved top speed killed off hype, when they heard race car engine and it’s not faster than a 10 year old.
Hmmm don’t think I could ever be persuaded that any car is better than f40. But the f50 has certainly answered it’s early days critics. Just not quite f40 level though

It aged very well but the F40 was a bigger shock in the time and even more pure racing, love this F50 but I would buy it hypothetically after winning the lottery when a 288GTO and or F40, in that order, is in my garage but it's great to see (or not for the price) the F50 gets the credits it deserves
No one quite as genuinely classy as Tiff. He never shows off. Always understated. And amazing knowledge. There should be an Automotive Experts Hall of Fame with people like Tiff, Harry, Iain Tyrrell, Alain De Cadenet, Clarkson, May, Hammond, Jay Leno, Henry Catchpole and all. The A list will be pretty endless for sure.
Awesome, the F50 from the Prost Ferrari engine F1 era driven by Tiff. Interesting to note how the F50 won an Evo magazine group test against the F40, after being regarded as the awkward second album for many years. Unsure I could choose between them, the F50 being normally aspirated and the F40 turbocharged. The wide back end design of the F50 has to be up there as one of the greatest of any supercar.
Evo writers openly speculated that the F40 provided for that test was a bit unsorted. However, their conclusion that the F50 was the best of all four supercars was pretty overwhelming. They all seemed to have an epiphany over it.
@@matthewcurtis3759I’ve got that issue in my garage must dig it out. Quite often the tyres are old and hard on these garage queens. The F50 had a much sweeter gearbox than the 40, and despite neither car having servo assisted brakes, the engineers worked very hard on the 50 pedal leverage to get a better pedal than the earlier car. I wonder what the price of the F40/F50 was in 2003?.

Did a video with Tiff years ago. It was for the military and I took him for a drive in one of the vehicles and took part in it with him. Met up arriving in my then new Impreza WRX and parked next to his BMW supplied 5 Series that he drove. As he saw me get out he said “nice car”.
For me F50 is well underestimated when it comes to opinions between it and F40. With all of the respect to F40 Im choosing its younger brother, it was my first poster on wall car when I was a kid 😀
It's certainly aged better than the Enzo because (A) it's got a 6 speed manual gearbox and (B) the engine it uses is unique, in that it isn't used in other Ferrari road-going models like the Enzo's V12.
Having spent a full day with an F40 and an F50 I can say that the sound, looks and the overall car makes me say that the F50 would be my choice. The sound alone is enough to make the decision. The looks get better every day IMHO.
Honestly, F50 is THE most magical car ever made by Ferrari. Period. :) It's beautiful... it dominates the road, sounds amazing, it has all the essences of what a supercar should BE. That's the dream.
I remember the Top Gear episode with the F50 and the Formula one car. Speaking of Top Gear, Tiff made a reference to the other one during this drive lol he said 5th gear.
As a lad of 13, I still remember video taping that episode of Top Gear around 1995/6!!😀 And I'd say if I went looking its probably still in a box somewhere in the house. Ever since then I've had a real hankering for a F50, to some they are not the prettiest Ferrari but that is more than made up by the fact it has a manual gearbox controlling that absolutely stonking V12 that is bolted to the bulkhead. And you can take the roof off for that full on V12 sound effect.
We all know that in the real world the F40 has much more hp than declared, especially in the first units produced in 1987 for Europe and is faster than the F50!! About the F50, what few people know is that without mechanical modifications to the engine, just modifying the exhaust and some parts of the intake, it is possible to leave the F50 with the same power as the F50 GT1, more than 800hp in the most aggressive map! Great content!! Dream machine!
I thought Tiff was going to accidentally slap Matt as he was talking, such were his gesticulations of enthusiasm whilst driving the F50. Great car. I knew someone who had one for about a year, they must be reeling now.
Don’t think the 1990 Ferrari F1 engine quite reached 14000 rpm tiff. On the Suzuka battle video years back they raced the F40 and F50 over the quarter mile, the F50 was a tenth faster.
The F50 is so much cooler than the F40. Also, I just noticed the "odd shape" of the rearview mirror, is the exact shape of the cutout between the headrests, from the driver's POV.
Yes, the front looks weird and the rear a bit plain, but the swooping curvy side silhouette, with that intergrated, high mounted rear wing are a thing of absolute beauty.
The F40 looks angry, purposeful, and with perfect proportions. The F50 looks long, softer and less masculine with the targa roof. The headlights remind me of the 360, which is a low point in Ferrari's design history. If it's in black with the roof on it looks pretty good in side profile. Give me an F40 any day... actually, I'll pick a 288GTO over both of the 'Fs'😂
I ‘ve owned two Ferrari’s and what they don’t tell you is how much time these cars spend at the dealership for repairs. What they fail to tell you here is that yes it exhilarating and the sound amazing but that 10 min ride of thrills will cost you three weeks at the shop. My Ferrari 458 and FF spend more time at the dealership over my garage. I am over it and what my mechanic mentioned to me several times, if I want reliability buy an Audi R8 or classic Acura NSX. I’ve lost the Ferrari bug!
It's my 2nd choice to my top 2 all time favorite Supercars. The other one entered unobtanium a few years back. I still had a little bit of a hope with the F50. Keep in mind, it would've meant I'd have to sell my house and be homeless. But I'd still have the chance.. Now though... she's enter unobtanium realm.. 😞 I belong to the few who have always loved it as soon as it debuted. It did everything better than the F40 and, in my eyes, alot prettier. Alas, now I have to continue to admire from afar.. If I ever do manage to win the lottery... 🙂
Ferrari outlawed any motoring journalist from timing a new F50 when it was launched. Ferrari knew it was in fact slower in a straight line, and slower around a track. Traditionally manufacturers always claimed the new cars to be few tenths faster than old models. F40 is more exciting, more fun, faster and handled better.

Oh man I have been watching Tiff since the early Nineties. He looks so old now, but still the same passion and enthusiasm. So many childhood memories.

Apparently the power delivery from the F40's turbos makes it highly unpredictable and keen to kill you, i'm sure that does not happen with the F50.
Tiff is one of my favourites, he knows how to extract the most out of a car while having the most fun doing it

2:00 - actually the F40 has 530 hp, tested by Best Motoring. Video on TH-cam. Also the F40 is a little faster than the F50.
For me if the McLaren F1 is the goat ,but the F50 is my 2nd choice over the F1, and much prefer it over the f40 .
