Science and God 8 - Universe is intimately linked to consciousness

  • It was the 16th century mathematician and philosopher, René Descartes, who laid the foundation of modern scientific thinking with his philosophy called dualism. He said that the mind and matter are fundamentally distinct kinds of substances and governed by completely different laws of nature. This gave raise to the belief that the world of matter can be studied independent of consciousness. For a few hundred years scientists believed that consciousness had no significant role to play in the universe. In the last five posts of this series, we saw how this notion is getting slowly demolished. In this post I talk about some more aspects of physics which show that the Universe is intimately linked to consciousness.

    I am enjoying your posts. I also have a deep faith in Vedanta and love for Science, albeit, with far less knowledge than you have, on either of them ! please continue the good work.

    So finally modern (quantum) science has taken a BIG U turn and has gained the same lane. Now it is chasing the Vedic Philosophy.

    Appreciate the clear presentation on such a seemingly abstract subject
    You remind me of the subjects that I have dealt with 50 years ago at the University from an exam grades perspective. Right now, when I am scratching the surface of Vedanta, your recorded talks serve as a brilliant beacon to give me some directions, and also that there is no time to lose, as much has already been lost in avoidable pursuits. Thank you ever so much

      Our shahstras do not have a specific answer. They say that it is a beginning less and endless process, Anaadi anantham. Similar to chiken and egg. It's is a cycle which has been going on forever

    Ma'am, thanks for your awesome talks that are extremely well explained and simplified.
    Could you please give analogies to explain the concept of 'entangled particles '.
    Also, what exactly do you mean by consciousness? The mind? Our thinking?

    The Upanishads say that God alone was there in the non dual state of pure consciousness. Then he thought he should become many , all for the sake of play ( Leela). Then he said ' let me become many' . Thus was born the Universe. It is only a dream for God. He alone becomes everything in the creation- both annimate and inanimate. He is the stage for the play and he is the
    actors also. In other words He stages the play with Himself alone. For, there is no other for Him! So, there is no purpose to the universe. It is a play of consciousness only . He is playing a hide and seek game with Himself. What a cosmic play. The laws of KARMA and rebirth are all in the realm of Maya only. From the point of view of your true Self, there is neither birth nor death. It is God's dream. Wake up from this dream and frealize that your indeed God yourself. To wake up from this dream of what we call life, we need a realized GURU. He comes in to our dream world ( which we think is real) and wakes us up. So, seek a True GURU. The GURU alone can give us release from this Maya.

    According to vedanta, Sakshi chaitanyam doesn't do any karma. It is Akarta, Abhogta. So this universe doesn't come into existence so that we can exhaust our karma(bcuz we didn't do any in the first place) rather this universe is just an illusion to make us realize of our true nature. If this universe was not there it would not be possible for consciousness to know itself. So maya is important.

    You have been making things easier to understand through your posts. The entire "Yogvasishtha" is on the notion that the universe is but an outcome of our consciousness.

    Nice I found for what I required, the only mistake we are making is taking consciousness as something different thing from us or ending up that body,mind is consciousness ,the beautiful play of maya to forget ones true nature as Brahman

    Consciousness is purely related to most developed organism only. In fact, consciousness is purely a sort of being present or absent. For instance, any person under coma, time is meaningless and consciousness is also, illusionary based. Many animals have different levels of consciousness but mostly related to migration in search of good food, shelter. For this, nature helps birds, animals to max extent. So, we, humans too, may be able to predict forthcoming events like earth quake if their level of consciousness synchronise with that of animals-nature

    What is the definition of consciousness as per modern science?.

    • @templesbooksandscience8697
      @templesbooksandscience8697  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Modern science describes it as self awareness. I think only human beings would fit into this category

    • @nish1961
      @nish1961 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To my knowledge, they describe it as a inexplicable cause of our experiences and it is part or product of our brain. Whereas Vedanta describes it as in the 5 features which Swamiji emphasizes. The first one being that it is not a part, product or property of this body.
      Science is a great tool to understand anatma. Atma cannot be known through any other Pramanam. It like saying that sound can be known with eyes.

      The problem with Science in my view is that it believes consciousness came into life as part of evolution. The science believes it is matter first and consciousness is an extension to matter while Vedanta proposes an opposite theory.Infact Sage Kapila proposed that Consciousness and Matter are two parallel reality while Adhvaitha phylosophy says Consciousness is the only reality.In my view the Trinity of Hinduism are Shiva - Primordial Consciousness, Vishnu - Primordial Matter & Shakti - Gunas in equilibrium state (energy)

    • @templesbooksandscience8697
      @templesbooksandscience8697  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Those are wonderful insights. I don't know if science will ever converge with the view of Vedanta. Just a few decades back it looked impossible. Swamiji's words that science deals with anathma and can never understand Consciousness seemed true. But now, science too seems be approaching a territory which we thought it could never reach. Who would have guessed that observer would take such a centre stage in physics. I wanted to convey through this series that there are many aspects of modern physics which overlaps with Vedanta. They are far off from a complete agreement. we have to wait and see how far physics will go.

      Upanishads/The Gita (Chapter 7)/Vedanta in a nutshell :
      Enough of discovering GOD(s) PARTICLE(s).Anything particle is "Inferior Energy" (demigods).Turn you attention now to "Superior Energy" , the Consciousness.

    Wonderfully explained … Thanks a lot.
    Few questions that popped up:
    1. Humans have existed on earth for only a few million years. But the universe existed for billions of years. Who were the observers before the humans?
    2. Are all the observers only on earth? Does my previous question make one think that there could be other observers in different other parts of the universe who have been in existence for much longer?
    3. Would a microscopic creature like bacteria and virus also be considered as an observer?

    • @templesbooksandscience8697
      @templesbooksandscience8697  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      1) there is a book called biocetrism where the author asks the same question. He concludes that nothing could have existed without an observer. That aside, according to our philosophy consciousness the fundamental substance from which everything emerged. There was never a time when there was no observer. It is the observer who is eternal and remains even after the universe ceases to exist. Science says the big bang emerged from nothing and Vedanta says it emerged from consciousness.
      2) please see the answer above. Any concious being is an observer
      3) this i am not so sure. Would we catagorize bacteria as conscious being!

    • @kmohan1010
      @kmohan1010 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@templesbooksandscience8697 if the observer is eternal … does the observer need to have a physical form or body? Favourable conditions like the one on earth is essential for the physical form to survive which is hard to find in the Universe. However a non-physical observer can exist anywhere and at any point of time? Just wondering …

    • @templesbooksandscience8697
      @templesbooksandscience8697  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Consciousness does not require a physical form. Our scriptures visualise consciousness like an all pervading field. It manifests is certain instruments like our mind but it is everywhere.
