- I show every hangable ceiling in the game.
Often when I show one of the non-obvious hangable ceilings in a video, I'll receive comments from people saying that they didn't know that there was a hangable ceiling there. I'd prefer if everyone were well-informed of all the hangable ceilings, and so I decided to make a video showing every hangable ceiling in the game.
To ensure that I didn't miss a single hangable ceiling, I programmed STROOP to detect all hangable ceilings, i.e. find all triangles with surface type 5. For the most part, this just confirmed the existence of hangable ceilings that I already knew about. The one exception to this was the hangable ceiling in WMotR on the underside of the cloud. I didn't know about that one beforehand, and I was unable to find any documentation about it. Hence, I spent some extra time on that one, discussing why it appears to be impossible to grab onto. - เกม
I dunno about you guys but the castle entranceway being a hangable ceiling fucked me up for a few seconds.

How?? I just tried to wall kick up there, and you can pretty easily get high enough to reach the ceiling but he doesn't grab onto it. Is it just one particular spot where he initiates the grab?
You can't wall kick up there, you have to single or double jump.
Ah damn it, I'll have to keep trying with that double jump, but I wasn't able to reach it that way

Specifically the Cavern of the Metal Cap, Guidosaur. Mario appears at the top of the waterfall if he's flushed out of the Metal Cap course by the current.
I should have specified that I meant to go up the waterfall instead of out of it. Then again all my ideas are stupid so I'm glad it's not like that.

The hangable ceiling concept seems like something the Devs were like "Hey this is gonna be an interesting idea to include!" and then they never really found an interesting use for it/the playtesters hated it because it's so slow
I think you're right.
You know now that I think about it you have a good point. All three ceilings outside the castle are hangable and the first ceiling in BoB (underside of the bridge) is as well, for no real reason. WMotR cloud still makes no sense though.
I could see it either being that or it being a mechanic that they wanted to flesh out but never got around to it, but didn't want it to get entirely unused either, so they put in some lame and mostly skippable ceilings... which sucks! If hanging was more dynamic, I could imagine this being a lot of fun, maybe even as alternative routes in some courses!

I actually heard about the hangable ceiling above the castle doors years ago, but whenever I tried it, it never worked. So for years, I thought I had dreamt up the hangable ceiling, or whoever I had heard it from was lying, or had hacked the game. Now this video is here, and it turns out it was becuase I was trying to wall jump to the ceiling, not double jump.

Oddly I discovered it when I was messing around for the first time I got SM64 on project 64. I was pretty confused.

It's hard to grab on to the ceiling where the castle door is, that's what made it look like as if it didn't exist. I had to use the levitate cheat on Project 64 (2.2, if you're wondering) to grab on to that point.

So I was telling a friend about pannenkoek's videos today. I said that pannenkoek has probably forgotten more about Mario 64 than anyone else will ever know, including the developers. My friend chuckled, figuring I was exaggerating.
Then I saw that there was a new video. With a title like "All Hangable Ceilings", I assumed there'd be some obscure bit of knowledge that pannenkoek would share with us, something that probably nobody else on Earth knew. So I sent my friend a link to the video, without even watching it, as supporting evidence for my earlier claims. And then I watched the video.
It did not disappoint. Phenomenal as always.

I'm fairly sure the counter resets after spawning a Red Coin Star, so getting the first one after that there'd be a 1.
If a level has more than 8 red coins, then (at least this has happened in some romhacks, no Idea if they were intentionally programmed like this) the first few red coins will make sounds (probably loading them from memory since they're always in the same order and seemingly random) and pull a 0, then the last 8 will act like normal red coins
Again, this may be just hacks doing it for the sake of having a cool mission
Probably has to do with how the red coins access the sound banks; if there's more than 8 coins they start using sounds that are stored in memory before the actual red coin sounds

There could have been a variety of reasons for the starting cloud to be a hangable ceiling. It could have had a coin ring underneath as a little secret, but no way to get to it. Someone found it and removed the coin ring, but not the ceiling. Just a thought.
Maybe the clouds were also rearranged during the level's development, and it was originally possible to jump up there.
Or it was left by a lazy developer during development who accidentally added the "hangable" attribute to the platform and figured no one would get under there.

The ceiling in that Wiggler room is hangable?! I died so many times trying to jump from platform to platform to get the red coins. I'm kinda mad that I didn't know the ceiling was hangable.
this may be a case of defining when something *is* *not*.
A. Forgetting to define that something is not hangable (extra route) is not as game-breaking as forgetting to define that something is hangable (unreachable star).
B. It can (but not necessarily will) save ROM-space.

Didn't know about the castle surfaces, but knew about the wooden bridges. I mean, I haven't ever seen anyone hang on the wooden bridge in the hub world, but I figured you could do it since it seems like the same object as the one in Bob-Omb Battlefield, only rotated differently.
Obviously didn't know about the cloud though. There's no way I could've known.

Mr. Game & Watch The description of the video said that ceiling triangles with surface type 5 are hangable. I guess when the A button is held right underneath a type 5 ceiling and the two conditions are met (doing a single/double jump, moving upwards), Mario hangs on the ceiling.
perhaps the cloud in WMotR is hangable because all ceilings start hangable, but are changed from their natural state because of reasons, but, since the cloud is unreachable, noone thought to change it...
Maybe WMotR was original a flash out 6 stars level with focus on the wingcap but was later rearrange for a single star.That is the only possible reason i can think of why there is a hangable ceiling under that specific cloud.

I posted a comment saying that originally, there may be a Blargg (they do exist in WMotR) in one of the 6 stars.
My guess is that all the non-obvious hangable ceilings were set early in development when the developers were still excited and energized and creative. The later levels, they just wanted to get done so they didn't bother with little, ultimately pointless details like that.

this game came out many years ago and yet im still learning things about it...
I have considered that Wing Mario Over The Rainbow used to be a level that took place in the castle grounds area, or you warp to it with the cannon directly from the castle grounds, but was moved to its own instance. After all, when you fall from WMOTR, you land back at the castle grounds and not the top of peach's castle. so I think that it was one of the first areas in development (likely to perfect the wing cap controls), and given the non-obvious hangable ceilings exist all over the castle grounds and in Bob-omb Battlefield, I think it was leftover from the early development phase when they thought they'd get more mileage out of the hanging mechanic.
But then they decided hangable ceilings were of limited usefulness and limited them to obvious grates from then on, and WMOTR was too difficult (or possibly too hard to find!) so put it in with the expert stages

Suika Ibuki No, that’s why the upwarp has boggled the minds of everyone for so long.
I believe it turned out to be an accidental hardware issue which may or may not have altered some of the game's coding. Don't know the full details.
I wasn't saying anything about the upwarp, just that I thought there was a hangable ceiling near it
Suika Ibuki: Actually, you should be right with regards to the metal portions. Then again, Pannen usually does not forget things like that. Especially with that being the worst level of the A Press Challenge.
That's the running theory because a bit flip seems consistent with the facts, but it's still an open question. We will probably never know for sure.

One thing I found interesting though is the hacked in box had snow particles.
_x_Mario_x_YT if you stand still long enough in this level Mario will not sleep but do the animation where he is cold and warming himself up. Which means this level is a cold snow level

Logically, It could be a leftover in design with the clouds. Perhaps at some point in time they were gonna hide some of the red coins under the clouds thus we would have to hang on it to get them. Though because the wingcap allows us to fly mostly anywhere with the right control and altitude this design was scrapped. The only remnant of this would be the poles you can hang onto and jump to on that one cloud to get the red coin.

2 things:
-I thought the second condition was that the A button had to be held. But I could be wrong, and they might be equivalent anyway.
-You might be able to use the wing cap to grab that pole with really high H speed. From there you could maybe engineer a forwards jump that would take you up to the cloud.
