    We have these "salt" lakes here on the prairies of Canada as well. We call them alkali lakes and their source is geologic and of course historic. Well below ground is a sediment layer put down millions of years ago by certain conditions (vast seas covered the area). The seas are long gone but the salts are lifted to the surface when there is enough water saturating the ground over these sediments. This occurs naturally and is exacerbated sometimes by irrigation which imposes even more water, lifting more salts. Water chemistries of these lakes can vary quite a bit but the most common components include: calcium and calcium-magnesium carbonates. By the way, don't ride into them, even if they appear hard and dry. There can be a thin hard crust over a depth of sticky gunk. If you break through you will have a hard time extricating your bike.

    Those salt lakes that you have seen are only a small part of the huge Lake Baskunchak, with an area of about 106 square kilometers. It is located on the territory of the Bogdinsky-Baskunchak Nature Reserve. Salt has been mined on this lake for more than a thousand years. Since the VIII century, salt has been mined on the lake and sent along the Silk Road. For the first time, Lake Baskunchak was officially mentioned in 1627 in the "Book of the Big Drawing", as a place "where salt is broken clean as ice". In 1997, these lands were declared a nature reserve, where a special nature protection regime was established on an area of 53.7 thousand hectares. There are deposits of medicinal clays on the shore of the lake. In June - August, tourists come to the lake, who bathe in brine and take mud baths.

    • @mumblesbadly7708
      @mumblesbadly7708 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I don’t think so, as Lake Baskunchak is located about 300 kilometers north-northwest of Astrakhan, and Noraly drove almost due west from Astrakhan on P216 on her way to Elista. From Google Maps’ satellite images, they appear to be from another huge lake that formed a massive collection of smaller linear lakes west of the Volga delta as it dried up, with the western-most ones completely drying up and forming a number of linear salt depressions.

    This is not dried up lake, those are salty-wetlands... it is common in northern Caspian area. Some of them are used to produce salt for food or industrial needs.

    • @brucehep2823
      @brucehep2823 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So when it rains, this pan will fill up with water and become a "lake". Then the sun will evaporate the water and it will become a "dried-up lake" again. That's a perfectly accurate description. We have lots of these in my country too and they are definitely not wetlands..

    7:01
    -Hello! (at the same time) "Good day."
    "How long do you stay?"
    -Ninety five (showing nine fingers, then five)
    "Fifteen?" (interpret nine fingers as ten)
    -Full.
    "Ninety two, yes? Fifteen." (showing her calculations)
    -No. No. Ninety... (writing 95 at calc)
    "Ninety five. How much?"
    -Full. Okay?
    8:23
    -Hello.
    "Hello." "Where are from and where are you going?"
    -Open?
    ...
    -Good morning.
    -Eat. (pointing at mouth, lol)
    "Drink?" (sounds relatively similar at Russian)
    -No. (some more mimic actions)
    "Eat?" (pointing at menu) "First dish? Second dish?" "Do you eat meat?" "Or not?"
    (mysterious face expressions, lol) -Myash?
    "Мясо" (sort of "myaso" - Meat)
    -Okay. Myash. I don't know what is it, but okay.
    -Myash... Is this one?
    "Yes. It is bouillon with meat. Boiled."
    -Okay. (clearly do not understand)
    "Half or full?"
    -Small.
    "Mutton or beef?"
    -And a water.

" I got my first bike from my dad at the age of 18 as it was a bet , for a very high grade in my 12th class. Gave it to a boy when I was 28 . My bikers license got expired 3 years back. Plan to apply and get one. Hope destiny smiles and I will have one . You are an inspiration. Keep up .

    100TH EPISODE COMING SOON! Noraly, may I suggest you do a special video where you just sit down and talk about technical things such as milage you are getting, how your electronic ignition module is doing (how often you use setting 1 vs 2), what is working well on bike vs what you would like to see improved etc. Talk about the journey thus far in general. A sort of retrospective video. A "fireside chat" with all your subscribers. That would be great! Best wishes always from British Columbia CANADA .

    It's a pity that I you traveled so little in Russia. I invite you again and definitely need to drive through Baikal and Altai at least. And these salt fields are the beginning of the largest salt lake and natural reserve - Baskunchak is an interesting place, I was there a couple of years ago.

    perfect approach to language communication in my view - people are so afraid to travel anywhere they can't speak their own language - you miss out on so much if you take that route.

  • @CaptHollister
    @CaptHollister 5 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    I teach adult language classes in the evenings, one thing I always tell my students is to not trust Google Translate, it's translations are wrong or misleading too often to make it entirely trustworthy. Even if it were perfect, though, the pleasure is in managing to communicate with locals using your hand and feet as you said. A friendly smile and some gesticulation can break the ice in ways no software ever could...

  • @patrickcooper9641
    @patrickcooper9641 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You are absolutely correct about using Google translate! No need for it except for "emergency" situation when you need to get your point across.

    Those dried up little lakes are naturally drying up periodically during a year. They are filling up over winter/autumn and drying up in summer. Soil is very salty, thus it crystallizes once water evaporate. I live in that Astrakhan area, thats how i know.

    2.35, it's not about expense, it's the water that freezes in winter underground as temperature falls in minus.. so they are placed above as it keeps the water flowing even when it snows..

    Повороты на трубопроводах делают для предотвращения разрывов при перепадах температур. Металл сжимается в холодную погоду и расширяется в жаркую.Turns on pipelines are made to prevent breaks during temperature changes. Metal shrinks in cold weather and expands in hot weather.
