This is by far the best video on MTS and A-TRAC on TH-cam! I think I finally get how to correctly use these systems! I'd love to see a similar video on Crawl Control.
I just brought my new 4runner home a few days ago. I was searching TH-cam for instructional videos about the various 4-wheel drive controls in the vehicle and came across your channel. Terrific information. However, when you add it all up. Crawl control, MTS and all its modes, Rear Locker, ATRAC, L4 and H4, it can be a little confusing when to use what, and when not to. The Owners Manual specifies special criteria for all of these tools but it's going to be tough to remember when to engage the proper setting, particularly at a moments notice. Someone (maybe you, sir) should publish a small, but precise situational pocket-guide.
I am not the first one to mention that this is by far the very best video on MTS and ATRAC that I have viewed on TH-cam. Keep up the work. I am looking forward to your next video. I owned three older (now) 4Runners and I liked them. They did not have any modern off-road tools that the new ones offer. In 2018 I decided to purchase a 2019 Jeep Rubicon 4 doors (Motor Trend SUV if the year) and I am glad that I did. It was on my bucket list and I absolutely live it. I have absolutely no regrets whatsoever. I keep myself informed on everything off-road and once again, I am glad that I came across your video!
Thanks for the tutorial. I just traded in my Wrangler for a new TDR Off Road last weekend. I hate reading manuals and appreciate you educating me on what all the features do. I also love 4 wheeling in central Oregon. Thanks!

Superb Video. While I've felt good about A-TRAC as I think it essentially utilizes the basics about 4WD that we all know, the reality is that I've never really understood how the MTS truly works and when & where to use it. Thanks for making this video, I'm going to point my T4R friends in this direction.

Great video and excellent explanation. Makes me wonder though. Judging by how little information there is in the manual, my guess is that Toyota doesn’t really expect the people who buy these to really use them as they were designed. Add to that the stupendous amount of misinformation and downright bullshit on forums, and the difference between the quantity of vehicles you see on the street vs the quantity you see in the wilds, I’d say it’s a reasonable assumption. When I bought my first 4Runner, I asked the guy who’d had it for 100,000 miles questions about the various 4WD features, he said he’d never used them so he didn’t know. Seriously. Dude, if I didn’t want to get to places where I needed this, I’d buy a Prius. I don’t love getting 17 MPG.
Thanks! You bring up some good points. My guess is that it is only a very small percentage of 4Runner owners that actually use them off-road. And as you point out, it is definitely difficult to find good information on A-TRAC and MTS systems.
I like your videos as they are very instructional. However, I just bought a 2024 4Runner TRD Off Road Premium. There are many off-road options to use: L4WD, A-TRAC, Rear Diff Lock System, Crawl Control and Multi-terrain Select. I would find it helpful to watch a video which covers the operation of all 5 options and, more importantly, when to use a specific option vs. any other option. Does such a video exist? Thanks so much for the time you put into making these videos.
What- about snow and icy conditions? Would I be correct to assume that deeper snow would be similar to sand and mud? What about shallow snow and slick icy conditions. I am from South Texas and have very little experience driving in snow. Thanks.
Awesome! I love mine. The only time I want a truck bed is when I am hunting and have an animal to transport. Something that may be an issue for you to consider.
you know what would have been added value to this video? If you actually showed when you activate certain features such as A track. Anyway, food for thought. Thank you for your video.
This is the most helpful video I've watched so far!! Thank you!!! Learning to use the 4Runner features and starting with zero experience in 4x4. Great video!
I drove the 2022 Tundra today, and was impressed with it. The ATRAC seems to be pretty good at getting you unstuck from sand, which we have a lot of down here in Biloxi, MS. I dont think the new Tundra comes with ATRAC, only MTS. Will I be losing a lot of capability by only having MTS vs ATRAC? Thank you, love your videos as they have explained both of them much better than any other video that I have ever seen.
Thanks for watching! The systems do have a fair amount of overlap in their capabilities. A-TRAC is the preferred system when it comes to starting from a dead stop. MTS is the preferred system when it comes to active driving. However, MTS can certainly get you going from a dead stop. MTS does not have that cool get-you-out-of-the-sand feature but if I had to pick just one system, for me it would be MTS.
just a note, MTS works in sand mode in 4HI. Which is helpful for me in the snow vs using just 4HI no mode, it gives you a lot more throttle and works great in deep snow.
You are absolutely correct and it works great, But keep in mind that the MTS system only functions at speeds of about 7 mph or less. Toyota did not like the idea of breaks being auto applied at speeds higher than that.
@@steve9348 Nope. We were talking about MTS. The Crawl Control feature is similar but a little different. Crawl Control works with vehicle speeds as low as one mph and as high as five mph. Per the manual, the one-mph speed setting is for rock, mogul, and gravel driving downhill. The two-mph setting can be used for those terrain features and climbing mogul terrain going uphill. The three-, four-, and five-mph settings help conquer snow, mud, sand, dirt, and grass and uphill gravel and mogul terrain. Crawl control shouldn't be used for long periods or over long distances. Its primary purpose is to help drivers navigate challenging terrain over short distances. To that end, Toyota has limited the amount of time that Crawl Control can be used to 12 minutes of continuous operation. If the vehicle exceeds set speed parameters while Crawl Control is active, the system will temporarily deactivate.
Downhill is a big topic for me to try and cover in a reply post but if you take a look at our video "Finally, The Only * Crawl Control * Video..." we discuss downhill starting at about 15:28. Cheers!
I'm new to toyota and just learning the system. So in level of capability is it: First plain 4wd, then add MTS, if slipping try adding low range then with ATRAC, then lastly use the rear locker...and then the winch?
The terrain and circumstances you find yourself in will alway dictate the sequence. You may start with 4WH or 4WL. So, for example, if I roll up to a rock garden I usually go 4WL. When choosing between Atrac and MTS, I like to think of Atrac as a system to get you started from a dead stop. MTS is more of an active driving system. Both are designed for very low speeds. Atrac will automatically deactivate if you exceed 4 mph. It reactivates again when you go below that speed. MTS deactivates at speeds above about 7 mph and reactivates when you go below that speed again. Hope that helps. Cheers!
Awesome video. Please clarify if you can. I know MTS won’t activate if going 3:27 over 7 mph but will it stop working once activated if you go over 7 mph?
The Limited does not come with MTS/crawl control, but has full time 4WD. Is it worth giving up full time 4WD to get those two features in your experience?
That's a tough question. It all depends on how you plan to drive the vehicle and your off-road experience. MTS/CC can get you through some technical obstacles but I've also seen some very experience off-roaders do the same obstacle with open diffs.
The new redesign Toyota Highlander uses the MTS and dynamic torque vectoring. It's AWD works so much better now. All models do not have it! You have to spend a little to get it.
Locking differentials are used when one wheel on an axle has little or no traction compared to the other wheel on the same axle. However, it is not that simple. There are a lot of other considerations such as speed limitations, going around turns/corners, off-camber issues, etc. It is also best to engage them only when you need them and disengage them when you don't need them. I have the factory locker on my rear axle and an ARB air locker on my front axle. They are what I use. The MTS/A-TRAC features are great systems for what they are. But, for me, I consider them a backup.
You are correct that the 5th gen 4Runner comes from the factory with only a rear locker. I installed an ARB air locker on my front axle. So, I have front and rear lockers. Cheers!
So if I’m on the beach in 4 hi and put it on mud and sand if I exceed 7 mph it will turn off multi terrain select mud and sand and it will just be in 4hi ?
With MTS on, you will lose and gain its functionality as your mph moves in and out of its speed parameters. It is a safety feature. Toyota does not want a sudden application of MTS-applied breaks at higher speeds.
I’m in Seattle wa we have the best place’s for hiking camping and outdoors, I just not got into 4Runner’s and Tacoma’s now I M in a debate should I wait till the new redesign comes out for the 4Runner or just get one. But it’s been a pain trying to get one without markups and overprice
Crawl control is the best for steep downhill. Crawl control was not discussed in this video but we are working on a video that discusses crawl control.
That is what I am using, the only problem I experienced was sudden braking when slowing down for rough points when the system was disengaged due to speed higher than ~8 km/h.
@@tomaszwwysokinski9236 Hmmm...sounds like you were on a seriously steep hill. What speed setting were you using? For downhill, the only recommended crawl control speed settings are Low and the setting In-between Low and Medium (not Medium). A couple of other considerations: (1) Toyota acknowledges that crawl control many not operate correctly on extremely steep inclines, (2) Crawl control has an automatic system cancelation when the brakes overheat. This can happen on steep downhills (3) Toyota has limited the amount of time that Crawl Control can be used to 12 minutes of continuous operation. It is definitely not a perfect system and steep downhills can be very challenging for it.
Another great explanatory video. Thanks. But it seems to me that both systems are severely limited. Lets jsut say, I'm used to Land Rover's systems, the first traction controls, WABCO C were not that great, 15mph and only on the rear axle - in 1994. The WABCO D, however was a massive improvement, full traction control to 100km/h, 62mph! (most still only work to 15mph! 😞 ) That means you could point your 2 1/4t 1999 Range Rover P38 at a hill and just ease the throttle up and it just works. Where you'd normally need the run up, it doesn't. The Freelander (LR2) is better, it doesn't have low range, but in a auto doesn't need it. Evoque, better.... I don't think I need to go one there... So Toyota is way behind, why have 2 systems when you only need one? Atrac seems to be a basic ETC (Electronic Traction Control) System, the MTS is a different, more like an early LR Terrain Response, ie a D3 (LR3) or Freelander 2 (2006) but without the need for the low box restraints. Why choose what you might need in a particular gear set when actually, it should work in all. The MTS should be what LR's Terrain Response is, or close to it. It also seems that the MTS has a lot of constraints, it should work in all gears at all reasonable speeds in all modes. Maybe that is why a lot of Toyotas have lockers?
You ought to know 1985 was the last year Toyota offered a front live axle. You cannot say you have a front locking axle on any Toyota after that year unless you preformed a solid axle swap.
I installed an ARB air locker on my front axle. So, I do have a locking front axle. This is mentioned in the video description and I have a couple of videos devoted to this and mention it frequently on my channel. Sorry for any confusion.
For the money, they are fantastic. I have abused them and have had zero issues. The ride on the road is extremely comfortable, and the performance Offroad is very capable. No complaints.
@@OverlandPNW The GX has a special place in my heart as it was really what I wanted to build out for my Mom when her Jeep Grand Cherokee died back in 2016. It was the perfect time to get the GXs as they were just starting to be appreciated and were consequently a great value. My Mom sleeps in her rig and needs a truck that can convert to a 4 seater when she arrives at her destination and wants to take grandkids around. The tumble forward design of the GX seats was just too much of an obstruction and we would have had to remove the 60% side. Additionally, I don't care for a swingate. They are harder to access and don't give you the advantage of protection from the weather, be it rain, sun or snow. I'm too lazy to want to have to deploy an awning every single time I want cover. Those things are minor though. They are great looking vehicles and I appreciate their narrower profile.
Quick question how fast can you drive H4 with MTS mud and sand activated? You were very clear on L4 MTS activated no more than 7mph...just bought a 18' 4runner trd pro 😃
I haven't been able to find an authoritative source that gives a conclusive answer to that question. The references in Toyota materials suggest it is in that same ballpark. Also, per the manual, MTS can be selected while the vehicle is moving so long as vehicle speed is "approximately 7 mph or less." So, while I don't have a conclusive answer, it appears to be in that same 7 mph approximate speed range. This makes sense since MTS applies brakes, and the application of brakes at higher speeds could become a safety issue. Some people just leave it on and let it activate as needed when they are within the operating speed parameters. I haven't seen anything from Toyota one way or the other on whether it is ok to do that. However, one thing to be aware of is that MTS will automatically cancel itself when the brake actuator gets too hot and is at risk of overheating. Hope that helps. Cheers!
The TRD Off-Road, and TRD Pro both have A-TRAC, Multi-Terrain Select and Crawl Control The SR5 only has A-TRAC. It does not have Multi-Terrain Select or Crawl Control. The TRD Sport does not come with any of them.
It all depends on your driving style. The three traction systems (Crawl Control, A-TRAC, and MTS) are designed for different things. A-TRAC is a system that is designed to get you going from a dead stop. It is not designed to be used as a constant driving application. It only works up to 4 mph and will automatically deactivate at speeds above 4 mph. MTS is the active driving application. It is a more robust system and is designed for driving through longer obstacles. However, it is not meant to be activated and left on all day. It will work up to 7 mph before it automatically deactivates. All three systems will automatically deactivate if the brake actuator overheats due to extended use. So, if you like doing longer, more difficult obstacles you may like MTS. It does, however, come down to personal choice. Some drivers don't like modern traction control systems and prefer to rely on their personal driving skill. That's fine too. I hope that answers your question.
Does the factory E locker work over 7mph or even 4 hi. Sometimes if you jump into a mud hole you need to spin your way through. You can't always creep through mud.
The factory E Locker really isn't intended for any thing other than low speed. It only works only in 4L. The Toyota manual says: "Do not drive over 5 mph (8 km/h) when the rear differential is locked."
@@OverlandPNW okay so the 4runner in your video has an aftermarket front locker installed? I see you mentioned in one of the tests that you locked both front and rear differentials
@@swoordoe Yes, that is correct. I have an ARB air locker on the front axle. It is a nice set up because, even though I have the air locker, I still have full and separate functionality of ATRAC/MTS.
A Chevy Colorado ZR2 bison diesel vs 4runner would be cool! I agree that a front locker is better. I have an ARB air locker on the front axel of my 4Runner. I absolutely love it.
@@OverlandPNW Really? That's awesome!! I've always wanted to see an ARB front locker in action. I live in Granite Falls, WA. We definitely need to hit some trails
You may have a system malfunction. The manual says that if the MTS indicator continues to flash, "This may indicate a malfunction in the Multi-Terrain Select system. In this case, Multi-Terrain Select is automatically canceled. Have your vehicle inspected by your Toyota dealer."

MTS deactivates at speeds above about 7 mph and reactivates when you go below that speed again. Hope that helps. Cheers!
Awesome video my friend good stuff on the traction control great job thumbs up 👍
Big thanks!
Awesome video. Please clarify if you can. I know MTS won’t activate if going 3:27 over 7 mph but will it stop working once activated if you go over 7 mph?
It reactivates when you drop below 7 mph. Cheers!
thanks for the content, just gt my 22 OR so definitely trying this out next...
Very nice! Congrats! I hear those can be hard to find.
Thanks for the info! The new Highlander is a great vehicle and the electronic traction control systems just get better and better!
Do both vehicles have lift kits? If yes, how many inches?
Yes, both have 3 inch lifts.
Just got a 21 trd or. Good info. Trying to understand how it all works.
Thanks and congrats on your new TRD!
Can you comment on when to use the locking differential...thanks
Locking differentials are used when one wheel on an axle has little or no traction compared to the other wheel on the same axle. However, it is not that simple. There are a lot of other considerations such as speed limitations, going around turns/corners, off-camber issues, etc. It is also best to engage them only when you need them and disengage them when you don't need them. I have the factory locker on my rear axle and an ARB air locker on my front axle. They are what I use. The MTS/A-TRAC features are great systems for what they are. But, for me, I consider them a backup.
Nice video mate. Very informative. Really wishing they had those toyotas over here. Cheers Ryan
Big thanks for the comment!
Hi, you mention in the video the "front" locker"? I thought the 4Runner 5th gen only has a rear locker?
You are correct that the 5th gen 4Runner comes from the factory with only a rear locker. I installed an ARB air locker on my front axle. So, I have front and rear lockers. Cheers!
So if I’m on the beach in 4 hi and put it on mud and sand if I exceed 7 mph it will turn off multi terrain select mud and sand and it will just be in 4hi ?
With MTS on, you will lose and gain its functionality as your mph moves in and out of its speed parameters. It is a safety feature. Toyota does not want a sudden application of MTS-applied breaks at higher speeds.
Excellent video!
Thank you! Cheers!
Awesome upload enjoyed watching stay connected friend
Thank you, I will
I’m in Seattle wa we have the best place’s for hiking camping and outdoors, I just not got into 4Runner’s and Tacoma’s now I M in a debate should I wait till the new redesign comes out for the 4Runner or just get one. But it’s been a pain trying to get one without markups and overprice
The new 4Runner's should be nice but you are right that it is difficult trying to get one without crazy markups!
Beautiful country, we got nothing like that here in Indiana😢
Thanks for checking out the video!
Fantastic Video! What kind of basket does Steve have on his off-road?
Thanks! The basket is an old Rhino Rack, which he has had on two previous vehicles. Cheers!
So, what would be the best mode for a steep downhill drive?
Great video, thank you!
Thanks, glad you liked it!
I don't know the Land Rover systems well but I've great things about them!
What shocks do you have? Are Ironman shocks good?
I have Icon shocks but my brother runs Ironman. I'll ask him to respond. Cheers!
For the money, they are fantastic. I have abused them and have had zero issues. The ride on the road is extremely comfortable, and the performance Offroad is very capable. No complaints.
How do you have a front locker ? Mine only has a rear lock.
I added an after-market front ARB air locker to the front axle of my 4Runner. You are correct, that they come with only a rear locker.
@@OverlandPNW I picked up a trd off road premium 2 weeks ago and am setting it up. I’ll look into this. Thanks!
Where did you film this video at?
The gravel pit area is called Groundhog OHV play area. It is in the China hat area.
So amazing !
Congratulations on your lovely work !

The 4runner is the Land Cruiser Prado don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
I've heard that 4Runners have the same engine, gearbox and basic chassis as the Landcruiser Prado. But, I could be wrong.
@@OverlandPNW the Prado is 99% identical to the gx 4runner and fj cruiser. Their all the same with slight differences
Toyota Prado 120 Series = Lexus(Toyota) GX470 & the 150 Series= Lexus(Toyota)GX460
@@TheKPDX Thanks for the clarification on this!
Cheers!
@@OverlandPNW thank you guys im glad i watched your video so far top well explained on the rest cheers brothers!!!
I have enjoyed watching your fantastic video, New Friend Here Stay Connected ❤️, like
Thank you. I watched your lunch time video and connected!
Sorry my question. Is this only to trd pro version ?
The TRD Off-Road, and TRD Pro both have A-TRAC, Multi-Terrain Select and Crawl Control The SR5 only has A-TRAC. It does not have Multi-Terrain Select or Crawl Control. The TRD Sport does not come with any of them.
@@OverlandPNW oh thx my friends
Great information thanks!
Thanks! Your last video made we want to get to a warm tropical island asap ha ha!
Is your front radar deactivated?
Do we really need the multi Terran select? My sr5 premium doesn't come with it.
Front locker? How do we switch that on? Didn't know we even had it.
I have an after-market ARB air locker installed on my 4Runner. Cheers!
I'd install one. If anybody other than ARB made it.
Current tacomas dont allow MTS in 4hi which sucks
Oh that's lame, I did not know that! Thanks for the info.
wait you said you have a live front axle and a locker on the front of that vehicle at 5:00 in?
I installed an ARB air locker on my front axle. Sorry for any confusion.
Looks like a land rover design on toyota, not bad
Yes, it is kind of similar to the Land Rover Terrain Response layout.
Thank you
You're very welcome and thank you for both watching and taking the time to comment!
Atrac is nice but a front locker and offroad mode is better!! How about my Chevy Colorado zr2 bison diesel vs your 4runner man 😁👊👍
A Chevy Colorado ZR2 bison diesel vs 4runner would be cool! I agree that a front locker is better. I have an ARB air locker on the front axel of my 4Runner. I absolutely love it.
@@OverlandPNW
Really? That's awesome!! I've always wanted to see an ARB front locker in action. I live in Granite Falls, WA. We definitely need to hit some trails
I’m from bend, are you out off of China hat Rd?
Yes, a lot of this was filmed off China Hat Rd and in the OHV areas there. Cheers!
What's next air suspension
Why does my multi terrain blink green, and I can’t select anything. I turn it and it says, mts cancelled.
You may have a system malfunction. The manual says that if the MTS indicator continues to flash, "This may indicate a malfunction in the Multi-Terrain Select system. In this case, Multi-Terrain Select is automatically canceled. Have your vehicle inspected by your Toyota dealer."
🙂👆👍
Thanks! Your Shady Lakes to Petit Jean State Park video was great!
if toyotas had front elockers, atrac would be redundant
So true.
A-trac allows you to turn much better than dual lockers.
@@johnossendorf9979 Good point.
That being said, I'd love to have dule lockers in my TRD Offroad Tacoma !
Good thing I don’t have MTS on my SR5.
MTS is definitely a love it or hate it thing! Cheers for 2022!
Thumbs down. This is the exact same video as your A-Trac video with a different title. How about a video just on Multi-Terrain Select?
I just watched your video "Mark Twain Mafia Rock Crawl." Awesome video! Those rock step-ups towards the end looked fun. I left a comment, gave it a thumbs up, and subbed to your channel. I do appreciate your criticism because you are a legit off-roader and the comment you left is not coming from an anonymous channel with no content. So, I will explain. When I published this video I knew there was a risk that some people would not like that it had the same content as the A-TRAC video but I wanted to make sure that people searching TH-cam for MTS info could find my MTS content. So, my apologies if you did not like it. No worries about the thumbs down. You are correct, it is a repeat of the A-TRAC video. I tried to fully disclose this in the introdution. Please see 1:01 where I state that if you have seen our A-TRAC video, you do not need to watch this video. Please see generally 0:41 through 1:19 where I explain that it is the same video but published with a different thumbnail so that people who are searching for MTS (as opposed to A-TRAC) will be able to find the content. Please see 0:58 where I explain that you need to know both systems to know when to use one and not the other. That is why both videos contain a comprehensive explanation of both MTS and A-TRAC. Please see 1:18 where I explain that everything in the video is time indexed. So, if you prefer to just watch the MTS content it is easy to jump to it. I also explained in the Description that this video is a repeat and that you do not need to watch it if you have watched the A-TRAC video. Cheers!
