When I did my spark plugs I did start off with watching your video and was attempting your method, except I have massive hands and kept dropping sockets and extensions onto the skid plate, so I had to jack the car up to get those sockets back, so I figured since I was already down there I would jack up the engine (one side at a time) and yes it makes it easier, but definitely more steps to take more time.
Yeahh if you drop stuff onto the skid, you might as well use this method but I didn’t find any additional space with the engine up vs with the engine down
Thanks for the video, m8. I guess it's good to know both methods, but honestly I thought you'd get waaaay more room with the engine raise and (FOR ME) it doesn't seem that much difference. I guess to each their own, but this feels 10x more stressful than just doing it the other way. However, you did sell me on the car lift though so...
Yeah I didn’t find that there was any more available space doing it this way. Lots of work for nothing. The Quickjacks are awesome. Make sure you tell them you found it through the TH-cam channel they didn’t want to sponsor 😅
So much easier doing it the other way. I did basically the same thing with a slightly different set of sockets and such. Kobalt electronic torque wrench is thin enough to work if anyone is curious.
Correct. This is the WRONG way to replace the spark plugs and I would not recommend. You are supposed to jack up 1 side of the engine at a time. That's how you get a bunch of extra space. You also don't need to undo the intake or the coils from the harness. The method should only add like 10 to 15 min to the job at most. Took me an hour and 10 min and was much more pleasant of an experience than the first time I did it. If you have tiny arms and can do the alternative method without lifting the engine, that's great. Many have problems with it. This method, done CORRECTLY, can be very helpful for some like me. Calling people a bunch of idiots and saying they have cognitive dissonance when you can't even do the method correctly because you are too busy trying to prove everyone wrong it highly cringe.
The original video has 33,000 views, 1,200 likes and 255 comments thanking me for the help lol Also the number of factory Subaru technicians who lift the engine to do spark plugs, regardless if it’s the whole engine or just one side at a time, is precisely 0. This is that cognitive dissonance I was talking about. But what do I know? It’s not like I’m a car chief for a pro racing team or anything…
i dont know if u read comments on old video or if you have a video regarding this subject but can you talk about the jackstand placement or jacking points? when i jack up the car i do it by the pinch welds on the side and i place my jackstands there but idk if this is safe
I can't find your other video. Can you add it to the description? I presume you can try to replace the spark plugs without lifting the engine. I tried today, but the coil was stuck because the rubber between it and the spark plug was too long to try to rotate it was too big to pull out. It's a GT 2014. Any advice?
Have you ever clean the inside of those holes? Any tips on how to do it? I’ve been having a cylinder 2 misfire and my last option is cleaning the hole. I’ve replaced spark plug, coil pack, and injector already and still getting misfire. I took a picture and it does seem a bit dirty around the rim of the hole deep where the end of the coil pack would sit.
I don’t think the hole being dirty would cause a misfire, honestly. It serves no function towards ignition. Have you checked your direct injector? If the seals fail, the car will run like a pail and misfire.

@Countersteer Garage i think the angle of it when you only undo one side makes it easier than just raising the entire engine
Gotta love the internet trolls and internet mechanic experts 😂

a friend of mine does change the 4 spark plugs in 37 minutes , he has a pit it helps

This looks like a massive pain in the ass to do. Also, I used to live in Suffolk, Long Island.
Did my accent give it away? 😂
Did you jack up on the oil pan? I wouldn’t suggest that. I jacked up one side at a time, had a lot more room…
I wouldn’t suggest this method at all 😂
just wanna say your other way does work (hard side done, easy side finishing in the am)
Easy side went super fast this am, again the other way is correct! Thanks for the videos man
Great to hear!

I always jack the car up and set it down on stands using the pinch weld. If you position the jack below the mirror, you’ll lift front and back evenly!
@@CountersteerGarage oh so pinch weld is safe, just wanted to make sure. thank you so much for your reply.
Yep pretty much everyone jacks up on the pinch weld. Just make sure the jack wheels can move so it doesn’t slip off! That’d be a badddd day

I added the link to the description! It’s also in a card at the end of this video

And I thought VW owners were dumb
🤣🤣🤣
The wrong way is u buy a brz.
Wut
Where are the funny people at now 🤡
Some people think they know more than the guy doing the proper how-to
Oddly enough they’re still saying this is the better way to do it. The cognitive dissonance is REAL
