- Australian Bernard Tomic retired from his match against Japan's Yuta Shimizu on Friday due to illness, with girlfriend Keely Hannah having tested positive for Covid-19.

@@ps-bi2sr personally I think it was a mistake for others, not him, to hype up his talent and his attitude is a lot more sensible than we may always give him credit for. Imagine having a talent for waiting tables, or retail, or some other job. Some of us think a career in sports is glamorous, attractive, or even fun, but it's insane work day in and day out. I don't fault anyone that just shows up and does what they need to pick up a decent paycheck like 99.99% of the world does when it goes to work.

@@ps-bi2sr maybe it seems like that when these guys show up as promising young talents who are expected to stay in the top 10 for their entire careers. If taking home over $6M in prize money, becoming internationally famous, and getting to face the game's legends on the biggest stages makes him the "bad day at work" guy I think he's doing alright. Not everybody that plays tennis for a living wants to be employee of the week every single week. It's just a lucrative avenue to apply an otherwise useless talent.

Tomic is still active at 31, albeit on the challenger tour; he's older than Kyrgios who has been sidelined with an injury for 2 years after admitting he doesn't train properly, if at all. Part of the reason for Tomic's career prize money not being double what it is or more is also due to how prize money is distributed in professional tennis. A 250th ranked tennis player is basically a nobody, even among fervent tennis fans, but a 250th "ranked" NBA, NHL, or MLB player can still earn anywhere from $5M to $10M per year.

Just a little info: Tomic did test positive for Covid after the match (May 27). His girlfriend claimed she tested positive 2 weeks prior and Tomic argued that it was more recent. He was quarantined after the match and has since returned to playing ( he made it to the finals of Tulsa tournament last week). That match (May 27th) makes it his 6th retirement from a match this year.

I don't know this guy very well so can only judge him for this video - according to the commentator he is arguing with his girlfriend stating that she has tested positive for Covid on that day and should not be there.
