I've made it about halfway up the tower, and here are my tips!
1: Don't play Let It Die. You will hate yourself and your fellow man.
...you're still here? Fine. But you'll regret it.
2. You can get your character back with Kill Coins, the game's basic currency that you can get anywhere. I recommend doing this any time you can to avoid the scenario Yahtzee describes at 4:28 where you accidentally lose a character trying to get back another character. That's if you don't run into said originally dead character as an enemy with all of their strong equipment and a grudge at a time when the character you are on is under-equipped and low on health. The price can get rather hefty later on, but at the start it's absolutely trivial to a degree that confused me into thinking it had to be a trick. THIS ALSO BRINGS BACK THEIR INVENTORY, as well as accumulated experience and even Kill Coins that they collected, which can often cover the cost of getting them back as well. In other words, it's better to NOT use your Death Metals right away, and, as the game title suggests, let them die. You'll lose nothing.
3. Use a few or all of your early Death Metals to upgrade the size of your storage chest. You'll need to stock up on a lot of those crafting materials to research upgrades for your weapons and you'll run out of space quickly. Cotton, for instance, is continuously used for a long time after other ingredients like Waste Oil and Iron Scraps become useless. Scratch Metal is also fairly oft-used, even though at first it has no use at all with the early blueprints. Trust me, you'll need some. As far as Death Metals are concerned there is really no better use for them as the insta-revive can be dangerous. Too often have I used a Death Metal in frustration only to be re-killed by the same enemy or another enemy on the same floor, making my sacrifice pointless without the use of yet another Death Metal. The only time I would advise ever using a Death Metal in the Tower is against a powerful Boss you have almost beaten, especially the bosses of the 10th, 20th, and 30th floors.
4. Every floor directly above the Waiting Room, in a straight line, has an elevator on it somewhere. Every time you reach a new floor in this progression, unlocking said elevator to make it usable any time is priority one. This is what makes it possible to climb the Tower of Barbs. With only a tiny Kill Coin investment that you can make back after killing a handful of enemies, you can go straight to any one of these floors you have reached. Keep in mind, however, that all enemies have respawned, including resident Haters.
4. DO NOT indulge the PvP mode for as long as you can. Once you have tried it even once, there are multiple downsides. For one, you can log in to find you have been attacked multiple times and a sizable portion of your Kill Coins and SPLithium (the currency for researching weapons and upgrading your Waiting Room) has been stolen. -At worst, somebody can actually KIDNAP YOUR CHARACTERS and, if they are not rescued within a few days, they will become that other player's character permanently.- Unfortunately it is only through this attacking system, even if you choose to never attack another player, that you can upgrade your maximum amount of gold that you can have at once and your maximum number of characters. Stick it out with the base number of character slots for as long as you can. Once you have chosen to start the PvP and start placing defenders to keep your base safe when you're offline, make sure those defenders are equipped with weapons and armour you have built yourself at the shop, as ones you found in the Tower lose durability as your characters are attacked.
5. -Quests in this game seem to be bugged, as often you will complete the objective you ask them to but the quest still says it is incomplete. I can tell you why. When a quest says "kill all enemies", it means EVERY enemy. When an enemy kills another enemy or a Hater kills them before you even reach the room, your progress in that quest is stalled and you have to do it again.- That's why I suggest doing as many of the Difficulty 1 quests as you can before triggering the tougher Haters (who will wipe entire rooms of low-level enemies that YOU needed to kill for the quest) via defeating the first major boss on Floor 10. That said....
6. Floor 10 is where you encounter the first major boss, a Don of the tower. It's a survival run along a train with multiple enemies, traps and hazards, all before facing an unbelievably tough boss with fast, nearly-insta-killing attacks. For one thing, DO NOT fight him until you have cleared every other floor you have access to and upgraded every weapon and armour blueprint you can get your hands on, not to mention (as stated in 5) clearing every Quest you have. Once this boss is dead you get access to a new area with different, better-equipped enemies, but what the game doesn't tell you is that you will also have Haters of much higher levels replacing the base level Haters all the way to Floor 1. Rather than the Level 1, poorly-equipped Haters you've dealt with up until now, the game will now populate your floors with the Haters of other players, with their strong equipment, no fear and no other goal but to string you up by your organs. All Haters can also perform those insta-kill Goretastic attacks when their prey is staggered, and that includes you, so be careful!
I hope this is helpful to somebody, because I've suffered through this game for long enough. It's fun at times, but any game specifically designed to annoy you into buying premium currency is going to have hang-ups that add up to ruin after a while. It's like a modern equivalent to arcade games designed to be so difficult as to be nearly impossible to get you to put more money in the machine in a sad attempt to see the ending. -I probably never will at this point, no matter how many quarters I put in.-
EDIT: Yeah, I got addicted. Finished the game this year. It's as grindy as ever, but the sense of style (via Grasshopper Manufacture) always brought me back. Since this is still getting upvotes, I struck out the parts that no longer apply. Keep on fighting.
Caylex T I have to disagree on number 4. It is entirely possible to obtain the coins and splithium to upgrade your waiting room without indulging in pvp. It’s just more time consuming.
I found a decent strategy that is somewhat grindy. You need tier 5 character access. Make one, level it up, then destroy it. You turn 50000 kill coins and some effort into about 100k splithium

I love Yahtzee, been watching for years, and when you're a fan of something... you can strangely sit down, watch the video, laugh along and go "it do be like dat doe".
I still come back to this Yahtzee review every now and again, just to hear some of his comments about the game being Free Until Paywall... somewhere around the 13th Floor.
Or him complaining about dodge and block being on the same button and getting confused.
The one thing I'll give him though is that touchpad on the PS4 pad. Its *definitely* janky sometimes, especially when you're trying to throw a mushroom, and it cycles left instead. But other than that bullshit happening occasionally... and it will... the touchpad is pretty intuitive and I wished more games had taken use of it in that way. It has a swipe left, a swipe right and a left/right mouse click.
But, yea... anyways, point I was gonna make is. It made me kinda realise that games reviewers might spend an hour-2 hours on a game. They're probably so bored of seeing games by now that they probably don't play in their spare time as a hobby any more... and lastly, they just don't seem to be very good gamers in general. Not that you need to *be* a gamer in order to review games... but sometimes that footage of the reviewer sucking on Cuphead's tutorial springs to mind these days when I read/watch reviews.

PSA: Suda 51 barely had any involvement in the maiking of Lollipop Chainsaws OR Killer is dead, and had zero involvement in the development of Let it Die, he simply has some relation with the studio and said "oh this game is cool" at some point so everyone thinks he made the thing.

"Only for rich people?" The game's FREE TO PLAY dipshit, the poor kids I know don't shell out 100 bucks for new PS4 games; they play F2P shit, or mods. So yeah, the game has class politics in it, but I must have missed some of the nuance in the "2 second monopoly-man sight-gag."

TheSoulHarvester I definitely agree on the fact that Yahtzee's criticism of LiD's F2P system is completely unjustified. I played for about 60 hours without paying once and have had a lot of premium content only via daily logins and the like, and I only played it during the week-ends so it's not about being dedicated or anything. The game is simply generous. I think Yahtzee just didn't give the game enough time to see what it had to offer, which is a shame, it's a really good game. Just burried under some clunky mechanics and downright user-hostile interface.
It's his shtick to pan everything, & I'm 100% on-board with that as a mode of criticism. I love it, as I assume most of his fans do, but that isn't an excuse for never saying anything of any consequence. None of his criticisms ever cut into anything, they're increasingly just vague allusions to "the ways things are different now."
Back in MY day, we just handed 100 bucks to EB! These rich kids nowadays just pay 50c at a time to make their free game easier, pshaw!

I have love hate relationship with Let it die on one hand I like the aesthetic and the weapons are cool but its grindy as hell and the later bosses on the carnival area are bullet sponges

This game just HAD to be released when the remake Lorax movie became a meme...
Abusing the expedition system (sending your other fighters into the tower to fight other players) basically negates any issues getting killcoins (which you can use to revive fighers) or splithium (or experience points if you abuse the golden snail room). It also gives you the mushrooms from the floor you send them to, which have abilities ranging from instantly reviving you to 50% life to being flat out invincible for some time. They don't really mention this stuff in game though, just 'you can send out fighters and get rewards'.
The grind really comes in when grinding color metals for gear upgrades.
Okay I'm doing the Mute Yahtzee challenge where I mute the video and try to Interpret what is happening
It starts off with Yahtzee deep in thought about a time he wanted free food and wine but the authorities stop him and he forced to get free candy from a van he then has a religious epiphany about how getting free stuff is bad. He and some electronic devices then fart on other bad things. This drives him mad to the point were he wants to let some kittens named suda51 die. A crazy Asian rock star then shows him a game but is flattened by a bigger one and then the grim reaper shows up on a skate board. It cuts to a nerd reading about the grim reaper most likely to learn how to conquer death or something only to discover that the grim reaper is a fusion of William Shatner and Patrick Stewart and that the true master mind of death behind it all is a dog in a hat. A sailor then offers Yahtzee a cookie but he turns it down, the sailor turns to a different dog in a hat and is like "WTF man he doesn't want the cookie". The camera pans to reveal crazy Asian man is being spied on by a drone. Yahtzee make a house out of letters probably a metaphor for something gay. Yahtzee and Yahtzee's clone iron some guy instead of his shirt, and Asian man is wanted for sky farting a very serious crime in Japan they are a lot less progressive about farting than you'd think. Some sexy cyborgs race to climb a mountain and the male one wins. Yahtzee come home with his ax only to discover they're out of eggs and on they way to the store he sword fights some one while two hedgehogs make out in the background. Motorcycle shenanigans ensue and Yahtzee gets hammered in the balls. He gets to the store but all they have is backed beans and some fat guy ate all the pie, so Yahtzee turns the lights off to steal some guys ham sandwich but he gets caught. So he goes home defeated and plays some video games and gets harassed by a giant hand, then he sneaks onto a roof to break a jukebox but cheese grater man comes to stop him. A statue from the sky chastises him for his destructive ways and gives him a lolly pop to change his ways, the owner of the jukebox not satisfied with Yahtzee's reformation curses them. Yahtzee giggles but then has tears of regret after thinking about what he did to that poor innocent jukebox. He then contemplates suicide with a scorpion but changes his mind when he realizes that killing himself won't bring the jukebox back. He then falls back into bad habits kills a homeless man and is killed by a giant cat and spends his after life haunting homeless bums the end.
This is a very underrated comment.

sounds more like salt than legitimate complaints. especially considering you don't pay every time you die but he made it seem as if that was the case. honestly it has it flaws but a) it's free. b) it isn't doing the typical pay wall crap and c) it's not much different than the souls games.

Its funny he mentioned the not being able to dodge out of a combo because it is completely possible and its actually one of Mejin's tips. Its all about timing. You can't just mash the dodge button and hope to get out of a dodge you have to get the timing right to get out of it. Also there are some weapons once you get the mastery level up that are actually quite good against multiple enemies. I try not to take on multiple enemies at once if I can help it (single aggro pulling is just something I learned from mmo's and dark souls series) but the game likes to throw in traps with multiple enemies that cant be avoided. Souls does the same thing, but you kind of just have to tackle it in the same way, either avoid until you can find the opening, or use a rage move on a weapon that works for an AOE effect.

I had the same experience with this game that Yahtzee did. I wanted to love Let It Die, but I couldn't escape the fact that I was meant to shovel money into it and nothing else. When it comes to Free to Play games, I like to see how much fun I'm having before I spend any money. If I'm not even having fun beforehand, I don't think shoveling money into it is going to make my experiences any more enjoyable. 😣

alright if you're watching this video in the year 2021 for some reason, here's my opinions on the game.
i've made it to floor 65, which means i beat the game, did the super hard bonus expansion, and started a chunk of the super duper hard bonus bonus expansion. i have about 150~ish hours on this game, and quite a few of my youtube videos on my channel are about this game, so i'm sorta kinda qualified to talk about this game.
i fucking love let it die, but i also hate let it die. there's things i like about it, the combat, using different stupid weapons, just playing the game, and there's some things i don't like about it, such as the amount of grinding you'll have to do, even if you don't pay money.
let it die is a full time job, whether you pay money to participate in it or not, you wanna continue up towards to the top of the tower? well guess what, you'll have to do a lot of grinding for that. even when paying money, it really doesn't make it any easier, sure you can instantly finish certain recipes instead of waiting 3 hours for them to finish, but you're also gonna have to invest a stupid amount of time collecting those resources to even make that equipment, and honestly sometimes it get's really frustrating. i wouldn't really recommend this game if you don't have a lot of free time on your hands like i have had because i'm a teenager with no responsibilities or a life. if you really want to you can play for 10~ish hours, probably get a lot out of it, and stop because you can't get past a certain point, whether it's your equipment, time, or you just suck at the game. hell you might have a more enjoyable experience with that.
alright do i have any tips? of course i do what do you think i'm not gonna give newer people some of my knowledge?
first: get your hands on a couple of decent decals, they can be premium, they don't have to be. i'd recommend vampire, tank, and probably dumbbell for the earlier floors. you can obtain a premium version of the vampire decal (premium means that they'll always be with you as long as you don't shove it into the hernia, a machine which can give you blueprints and crafting supplies for decals and other blueprints) if you just play the game for 10 days, and don't spend the heavy tank, diamond, or barbell decals that you get as login bonuses, those are super rare and you'll probably want to hold onto them because they're non premium and at this stage you'll be replacing your characters. you're probably going to want to hold onto those 3 till you get a grade 6 fighter you're happy with, because that's like end game fighter and by that time you'll find a really good use for those decals. *LEARN FROM MY MISTAKES*
second: get the assault rifle, and upgrade the assault rifle to at minimum tier 4. you don't have to do this at the start of the game, but if you want to do the super hard bonus expansion, you'll wanna get it to tier 4 by the end of the game. if you want to make this process slightly easier, you can grind cash for skill decals and recycle em and get the kamas re, which has more ammo and has less material requirements for the cost of feeding at most 100 decals into a machine.
third: once you're at floor 11, obtain the night scout set. helmet and body piece can be found in chests, but the legs will probably be have to purchased from a shop for 120,000 coins. specific floor 14, and 17s have shops on them and you can tell that they have a shop on them if first: there's a man behind the counter symbol on the map, and second: if they're filled in with black. if they're not filled in with black then there's not a shop on that floor right at that moment. you can usually rig your chances by going to a lower floored shop and then go to the shop you actually want to go to, but this won't work 100% of the time because sometimes the shop will show up on your first attempt, but they usually show up on your second to third attempts, so go to a lower floored shop (there's a shop at floor 3,4,5 i think but i might be wrong so don't quote me on that) then go to floor 14, koshi-tagawa, and floor 17 nutakoen. the night scout set is usually considered the best free set of armor you can obtain.
and fourth and finally: don't spend death metals on early floors. it's usually REALLY easy to get your fighter back on 1-10, and hell even 11-20. 21+ is a different story but you can always get them back with kill coins.

That is quite possibly the worst scheme for microtransactions I've ever heard of. "Hey, let's make the game obnoxiously betray what the player went in there for." "Won't that make them resent the game?" "Sure, but then we'll offer the chance to pay the game to not betray their expectations."

AardvarkLord All you have to do is not die or get your character back by killing them on the same floor they were on or by getting in game currency to get them back (which only becomes a fair amount after floor 20). Just use metals in an intelligent manner & you'll easily have at least 5 at all times (unless you want more storage space, which costs 2 for 10 slots)

But duuude, come on...Invasions into other peoples hubs is a far better way to gain splithium then any other method, so as to upgrade your own hub/shop weapons/side character capacity.Rolling feels useless since you can't pass through attacks, only try and get out of the way (which fails more often then not)Combos actually have a point in using them to the end, rather then the second hit's free system souls has (good and bad, depending).You can get your dead character back without paying, you just need to go back to where you died and kill your dead character (at the cost of all the loot they found). Paying for Death to get them back for you is meant for if you have valuable stuff you can't afford to lose, like a new blueprint.You completely left out several systems that would of covered some of your complaints, like the in game mail system telling you when new tiers of fighters are available, the other uses for death metal, so on so forth...

Joseph Ceda it's not a matter of skill, it's an inevitability. you say git gud but you realize that means actually getting there right? the process this game uses actively punishes the learning process. it's a practice to wring cash out of people in what could otherwise be a decent game. im as gone dark souls if every time you died you had to roll up an entirely new character unless you paid cash.
Or you spent a little time running the lower floors and getting the kill coins to revive your character.
Or you could just grind, learn, get better gear and beat the game without spending money?

Its one of the best free games ive ever played, and i only needed to grind some weeks and payed about 12 dollars to beat the story mode.

basically this whole thing is false. your reasons for saying its not like darksouls being the biggest part. first, you use the touch pad in two different ways in all the souls games with a touch pad and second roughly 90% of all souls games is strictly here's a bunch of dudes, surprise. even several boss fights are that very concept.
and the litany of falsehoods about the game itself is just salt in the wound.
Name Name personally I have no problem with the controls. They’re fairly smooth and not particularly hard to get used to. The game is a very large grind so fair enough but if you know where to look you’ll get through it easy. The whole not enough substance thing is a little bit stupid considering levels past floor 10, waiting room customisation, upgrading armour changes the colours, the game gets more creative and chaotic. I think there’s plenty really

Just to put a bit more detail on his review:
The continues are more for the items you found than the character, you lose all of your items upon death that arent in the storage box or on your other characters. Leveling up is quick and you keep your proficiency with weapon types between characters. Also, you COULD hunt down old characters to bring them back, or you can pay gold (which is plentiful) to bring them back with less hassle and they keep their level. Invading other players' hubs nets you a good amount of gold and another currency that you use to upgrade things like the amount of character slots you have and other multiplayer related things.
Personally I reccommend it, but it definitely isn't for everyone. Stunlock combos are common among enemies and later bosses are flat out there to encourage using continues or force grinding, but the aesthetic and interesting mechanics involving the disposability of time through losing your characters make up for it with me. Play it till you get bored and drop it
