EA as a toddler is the most fitting comparison i'll hear all year
I'd take my leather gardening gloves to that baby's butt to punish it for its fits.
Yes,they are definitely evil just like a toddler.
@Gruagach. Iron Shoes Well then we (the gaming communit) should Brexit dis bitch....or pretend we are going to and then sit on the decision for nearly a year.
Matthew Fifer I heard EU trying to keep Britain much as they can so they are trying their best to keep British people in the EU
At least a toddler has the excuse of not knowing what they're doing. EA is just objectively evil.
People need to realize that all the amazing games that Bioware made years ago, most of the people behind those games left Bioware.....
And the rest ought to be on suicide watch for the terrible working conditions.
Not exactly. BioWare is pretty much the same in terms of talent and work culture that it always has been, which is actually the problem. Bioware has always had a habit of rushing products at the last minute. In older titles when they were using engines made for RPG's and it worked fine, they didn't need to make a save game feature or anything like that and the engines were easier to work with even though they weren't as impressive. Then comes the Frostbite engine. This engine can do alot, but it is insanely difficult to work with. As a result, BioWares habit of doing things at the last minute really didn't pay off because there were so many issues to fix. They had to build alot of the basic features all RPG's have into the engine. Graphic fixes were insanely difficult to fix and all the Frostbite veterans at Dice were not allowed into the project. The end result was a disaster. It is the same thing that happened with Andromeda and why it looked so bad.
Oddly enough Anthem didn't start out as a Destiny clone, in fact what the game was would morph over time, including the name which was also a last minute decision. The issue there was with poor project managers who were indecisive and all over the place.
@the shrubberino well, i agree on that last point, but probably not in the way you intended.
Edit: Aaaaand he's gone. Now no one understands my comment.
...well played
@the shrubberino ouch, my feelings
@@TheDirtysouthfan My impression is Bioware DID change based on my memories of SWTOR (which I played a lot of it when it went F2P). It was objectively NOT a masterpiece and had its issues (the one I remember most avidly is quests being repetitive and grindy and, unlike Anthem, the gameplay did not even try to compensate for them), but you could really feel the effort in put in storytelling based on each class having a separate overarching story and then each planet having a questline of its own, which would in turn also connect into the overarching War story. This is the core that seems missing in Anthem.
For the Mass Effect series, you can also see a general tendency: ME2 would be flashier but also a bit shallower than ME1 in terms of progression system and story (I am admitting this despite ME2 being probably my favorite game in the franchise), and storywise it's hard to say whether ME2 or ME3 are better, but ME3 was definitely worse than ME1 (just compare ME3 dreamsequencies to the beacon-induced visions of ME1).
So, Frostbite may have underlined some long-running problems of Bioware, but its better qualities have been sipping out for some time now. Personally, I was not even disappointed about ME4 because it became clear to me after ME3 that I should not expect anything great from them.
He perfectly described EA on this one
can we get a theory as to why they do this? are they malicious or just woefully incompetent
@@drewsclues8625 Mat Pat, you're up.
Oh, yes! ^_^
Sadly, going from EA's track record, I think Anthem will be the end of "Bioware" as we once knew it, if not totally wiped out of existence soon.
Oh, well; my biggest hope is that the remnants of the company will get together and start yet another company to produce 'True Bioware" style games (although they may have to 'reskin' a lot of the concepts of Mass Effect to avoid getting their pants sued off ^_^).
And the president
@@drewsclues8625 Yes
"Am I on suicide watch?"
I thought that was your default setting.
SHH! he doesn't know that yet
We need to be subtle and gift him some shoes that have velcro straps instead of laces.
@@mayorofasilenttown3837 we need to be even more subtle, we need to give him a study that shows women are more likely to have sex with you if you wear velcro shoes

0:18 - 1:03 Perhaps *THE* most perfect description of EA and its "relationship" with the developers they own.
God, Maxis must be the Game Dev equivalent of a White wine zombie mom.
No one can top that! Well played, Yahtzee! Well played!
Except for Respawn. For now.
@@nmotschidontwannagivemyrea8932 How many studios does EA still own at this point?! Cause I'm wondering when will they run out of developers to toss under the bus.
You say "developers they own," but be honest, dude. It's EA. The developers have become slaves and they get put down every time a property doesn't perform to their ridiculous standards. They've become a metaphor for slavery, come to think of it.
"Although Israel and Palestine have never tried to flog lootboxes to Lebanon."
...could that be the solution?
Given how Islamic Rule is STRENUOUSLY against gambling, I doubt Palestine would be up for it. I don't know enough about Israel for to make an assumption, but I'd almost say not likely.
Just nuke both sides.

@@jcdenton3512 something something freedom, something something in american
@Dark Horse Maybe if both sides didn't act like spoilt children unwilling to share their toys, they wouldn't be deserving of a nuke.
Still, I'm open to Yahtzees Lebanese solution, if only to avoid Australia having to help America in yet another of it's pointless military actions.
Best review of Anthem on the Internet. "Please don't hate Bioware for Anthem... pity them for having to make this."
Agreed
It's so painfully obvious given how fast they've patched major improvements into the game that ea just wanted it released before div 2.
Hate EA, but well, that is kinda redundant to say, what kind of dilusional fool wouldn't already?
Sdsdfdu Because EA made them do it
EA is garbage and deserves to burn in mediocrity for eons. Though saying Bioware is the same company that gave us Dragon Age and KOTOR is far from the truth. They are a shell of themselves.
Sex with the ship sounds much more interesting than anthem.
Joe M That's called the EDI romance mod.
If those japanese mobile game shit were to be looked at with disgust, yes.
It is more interesting than anthem
As we learned from Futurama, having sex with the ship sounds all well and good until you look elsewhere and then your home and method of transportation is suddenly super possessive/jealous and will probably try to kill you.
@@althelor just like one of that japanese mobile game i play then.
@@althelor Hey at least it'll make a memorable part of the game
Don't hate Bioware, pity them
Accurate af
Pity what they once were, not what they've become
@@DarranKern No pity them. If you've seen Game of Thrones or read the books, compare Bioware's relationship to EA like Theon's relationship to Ramsay. Bioware didn't ask to get flayed alive and have their genitals chopped off or to be turned into a gibbering lunatic who serves obediently because they're terrified of even remembering the good old days because master might punish them again for even thinking for themselves.
Pity them like we pity the Westwoods of old. For we all know what will inevitably happen.
I more pity every current developer under EA at this moment. I shed a tear for Maxis, bellow in sorrow for Bioware, Drown in sadness for DICE, and so on and so forth. Don't care much for PopCap, though.
@@b3rz3rk3r9 DICE seems a bit too willing to cooperate in EA's usual shittiness
What I find funny is EA hypes Anthem, Anthem turns out to be boring and grindy, EA doesn't have much to do with Apex and doesn't hype it up, Apex turns out to be good.
It's almost like the less involvement EA has with the games published under their studios and better the games will be.
Whoda thunk
As Yahtzee has said in the past; if something gets blanket media coverage it's cos the people publishing it suspect it might be complete wank.
This is actually hilarious in retrospect; basically every problem with Anthem ended up being Bioware's fault, the one good aspect of the game (the flying) was almost taken out until an EA executive demanded they keep it in.
@@hoodedman6579 Yeah I heard that but I still refuse to believe EA had nothing to do with Anthem's failure. I mean this is a company notorious for going out if it's way to screw over developers and wring us much money as possible out of their consumers.
Ever since ea started ignoring Starwars battlefront 2 dice has been slowly fixing it with good updates
"OOOH! Good guess. Wrong though" really got to me for some reason.
It got me because I was that guy. I’m wandering around trying to get multi-kills by killing lots of people but nothing is happening. Then I google it and find to get a multi kill you have to kill eight people in ten seconds, but not use your ult. That last was what was screwing me because using your ult is the obvious way to kill lots of people. You generally save it for just that purpose, when the mob shows up. So you use it and then make your multi kill impossible because the remaining dudes are too spread out.
@@defenstrator4660
So you had do a multi-kill without the ult. But was this either not explained properly or the UI that bad that it was hard to just get that that detail?
That feeling when you try to deduce what a game is trying to tell you using logic, and logic doesn't work. As a long-time gamer, I'm familiar with it... and as is so often the case, Yahtzee nicely highlighted the feeling it gives you.
It wasn't explained at all. There was only the name, multi-kill. What that meant was left unsaid. Naturally one assumed that you had to kill a lot of enemies at once. So my friends and I would wait for a big mob, then ult on them to make them all die at once. No multi-kill and we couldn't figure out why.
We had to look it up on line and even then it wasn’t the Anthem page that explained it. It was some guy on Reddit who had figured it out.
@@defenstrator4660 thats dumb af. Why didnt they just call it "multi kill without ult"? I understand your frustration.
Imagine for example a challenge in another game "get a grenade kill", but to complete it you have to kill an enemy with a grenade from specifically 69 metres away and it doesn't tell you that.
Bioware is and has always been a story focused company. KOTOR, Jade Empire, Dragon Age, they all had fighting systems that weren't run-n-shoot, they were somewhat slow pace and tactical. EA basically turned to the geek of the class, who has good grades in everything but PE, and said "Lift that weight the size of your mother for us", which Bioware tried so to impress but ended up snapping its spine like a twig.
Not just any geek, Bioware was the geek who would normally be an English teacher or professor. And EA told them to do the same reps as Bungie, the starting RB.
What else do you expect from EA, a company whose CEO looks like a James Bond villain?
Not true, James Bond villains have charisma, Andrew Wilson just has a very punchable face.
@@properlybrilliantgames1824 I'm more inclined to agree with both sides. He looks more like a Bond Villain from it's blandest film with a face that's near perfectly contoured and shaped for my punching delight. Almost like a Chris Meledandri punching bag, to be honest.
Andrew Wilson is one of the illuminati lizard aliens.
More like a rip off James Bond villain. You know, like a Chinese Jimmy Bind, agent 700, villain.
Starman Gaming Ya know, Andrew Wilson looks a lot like Graves from Die Another Day with a different hairstyle.
EA is one step ahead of whole industry. while everyone making players to do battle royale, EA is making studios doing battle royale.

R.I.P Anthem 2019-2021, gone and almost certainly forgotten.
I know about kill stealing but I never knew heal stealing was a thing.
If it wasn't already, Bioware just made it a thing. And I'm sure they can be proud about that.
I guess thats what they were talking about when discussing innovation
Happens in For Honor if players have the "Order" equipped.

@Denam He actually touched on the fact that EA forced BioWare to make a looter shooter when they're most familiar with RPGs, no wonder it turned out to be a flop.
Yahtzee nailed EA's description.

Spot on with that description of EA!
Jetpacks couldn't save this game, then nothing can.
That's too bad because the jetpacks are actually pretty good. You get bored of them after a few missions, but it handles really well, and the verticality does help.
Jetpacks won't give you anything Tribes didn't.
Maybe grappling hooks can.

Thank you for drawing my attention to the minor misspelling Mr.Prickwood.
This was the only game that had me considering breaking my no EA thing I have going, partly for bioware and I really liked the idea of it, but this was almost a year ago. The reality of today is 'Sorry Bioware, that EA bent you again, get as far away from EA as you can' and Im not giving anything else from EA any consideration from this point on.
@Kobra Thor At this point it seems like the only thing EA still has going for it is people hoping that the next game they release will be different from the disappointments that they're throwing out on a semi-regular basis.
Well, that and FIFA since they have a near-monopoly on football games.
While under normal circumstances I encourage people to hold hope for a better future I think that there's also times when the towel has to be thrown in the ring and with EA it feels like hoping that they'll manage to produce a game which doesn't disappoint the customer serves to do little but to drag out the company's caustic lifespan.
@@filipwolffs I can not agree more.
Literally not two months after this video there's an estimated player base of less than 3,000 (give-or-take) as compared to the nearly 3,000,000 units it was believed to have sold. It failed by *three orders of magnitude.*

@@anthonylipira9526
EA: Single player is dead...
Me: Yeah, keep telling yourself that while I play the recent and previous fun and successful Single player games.
I like Warframe for this reason. There are certain things that are vastly more annoying without a team, but a great deal of the content is soloable and you always have the option of just.. doing something else, if the multiplayer is getting you down. That, and people are mostly friendly and helpful since the game doesn't encourage competitive zero-sum behavior (outside of the minimal PvP anyway).
@@battlion507 that genuinely made me crack up when I first heard it.

1:20 “90% setting, 10% plot” To be fair, that’s also basically how Dark Souls does it
Definitely; the only difference is that the settings in Dark Souls actually add to the narrative and atmosphere cohesively and doesn’t all look the same and weirdly hinder gameplay all over the place
Damn I wanted Anthem to be good so bad
Yet another new "hyped" EA title that failed miserably.
Hyped? I didnt see any hype around it, mostly worry and hate directed at EA lol.
hype? No, they tried to hype it but i dont think its possible for a game to generate hype when EA is on the box
@@elitheninth You haven't seen EA's definition of a failed game then
Any sort of hype towards it was, as I noticed, more of a neutral worry and pure disgust. As Yahtzee said, "Don't blame Bioware, pity them," as I would sure pity the very development stuidos beneath the "Developer-Killer" Toddler EA. After all, a nkrmal studio usually fucks up once or twice within their own field of comfort, such as Bethesda and Fallout 76, but it's definitely EA to ame since Bioware is more of a "Single-Player" oriented studio. The last time EA's mismanagement came about, ME: Andromeda, a somewhat fine game while also being the weakest link in Mass Effect's chain, came about from a Bioware studio that never once made a full game. And to think that weak link came from prioritizing this big hunk of "Meh," similar to an unfortunate reoccurring pattern from EA. Visceral Studios, anyone?
WHOOO could have predicted that???
that impression of EA Yahtzee did is depressingly on point XD
Story is 90% setting and 10% plot. Yep, sadly that's your typical multiplayer game. All about costumes and numbers.
A game story being mostly world building isn’t necessarily bad. It’s just a shame anthem has a fairly boring world, and the plot they do have is generic with pretty generic characters, with luckily some good voice acting imo.
FromSoft tells most of their story using setting.

That and item descriptions.
If anyone is scouring the comments wondering who the guy on top of the word "Dominion" at 1:15 is and what it means, it's a reference to Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, where the Dominion is an antagonist of the overarching plot. The guy is called Weyoun, and he's an important official in the Dominion and constantly appears in the plot.
Anyone else notice the DS9 reference with the "Dominion" text?
Weyoun!
Anthem is just a mainstream attempt to commercialize Warframe, prove me wrong.
Funny, since Warframe has cornered that market so badly even Destiny 2 is going on a massive overhaul to be more like Warframe.
And funniest thing about that comment is its true, yet Warframe makes ALOT of money compared its competitors in this genre *looks at Destiny switching to F2P*. Sadly Warframe has such a massive glut of content that is engaging AND keeps adding new engaging layers that make sense, functionally at that (usually), while not forgetting the older content. Yahtzee describes the situation with EA perfectly. Bioware is a magnificent gaming company forced to do the bidding of a company only interested in greed. Sadly as long as EA holds the monopoly on sports games, they'll never change. I wish people would fricken stop playing EA sports games every year!
Luke Emberson they’re literally the same god damn game every year. Only this time we managed to add another wrinkle in Magic Johnson’s forehead. The only truly good sports game was Mutant League, because it at least changed the formula of a football game
Well as long as football hooligans exist, they will buy the same game over and over from a terrible company for no other reason than "because it has sports in it"
If I were rich I would go to an expensive restaurant and order a bowl of corn flakes.
I can only imagine what Yhatzee will say if he ever reviews Left Alive.
I think the second biggest issue with the story is that it's done in first person. We connected to Sheppard in ME because we could customize him and because we saw him involved in the story all the time. Anthem has most of the dialogue cutscenes done in first person which just feels weird, especially since most NPCs stare at you blankly inbetween saying things.
Mainly the plot is boring though. I'm not sure what they could have done to make it more interesting. Maybe have more than just one "jungleish" area?

I'm still upset they murdered Origin.
EA ditching Maxis should've been put on trial as war crimes.
"Woosh Crikey Lasers" I feel is one of Yahtzee's most underrated lines
I figured out why Bioware is killing anthem. They are trying to get closed so they can open a new company and make good games again. That or they are making a Multiplayer game SO bad that EA tells them OK you suck at Multiplayer go back to single player.
Firstly, you regularly crack me up with your videos.
Secondly, you usually say what everyone is thinking anyway
Thirdly, YOU DESCRIBED EA PERFECTLY
"Ooh, good guess!
...Wrong, though."
The EA impersonation bit at the beginning literally had me crying laughing
Oh boy, this will be fun...
Edit: He nailed EA in the beggining
I visited the BioWare office in 2016 as part of an Audio Engineering Society function. Got to see a bunch of behind the scenes stuff from Andromeda, ME3, Dragon Age Inquisition, and see how they worked and talked a lot about audio. I signed an NDA, not that it matters anymore since it's all released.
But they kept making sure we didn't go to one of the floors because they were working on a new project that nobody knew about and they couldn't share any information with us even with an NDA. They kept talking about it as the "super secret shit" that they had to do and I'd say everybody was trying very hard to not let their disdain for the parent company obvious. Was pretty certain back when they announced Anthem that it was the "super secret shit" project.
I guarantee everybody at BioWare fucking hates Frostbite. It was forced on them. I hope they stay open because they've been around a long time and they're the only AAA developer within a couple thousand km of here.
Seriously ? we really need more behind the scenes info about this Game. I wonder if Bioware planned something entirely different for this IP, but was forced to change to a Looter-shoote by EA ...
Is it sad that I would totally romance the Normandy? Not EDI, but the frickin' ship.
Well, the Israel/Palestine line aged well...
EA destroyed so many series: Dead Space, Crysis, Mass Effect, Battlefront, Battlefield, Need for Speed and many more. And they still haven't bankrupted
It's because we all still buy their stuff made by the husks they enslave. Oops I meant developers they buy
@@surfsidezawaz And THE WHAAAAALES!
cuz the ones who arent into wideogames spend all their money on fifa and the other sports games without knowing or caring about what ea does.
Yeah, that's how a parasite works
Don't forget Titanfall...
...how did I only just now discover this channel? You hit the nail on the head perfectly! Thank you! SUBSCRIBED and down with ANTHEM!
0:35 is now my text notification sound
I will never understand why EA took the people that made successful games about piloting a mech (Titanfall) and told them to make a Star Wars game. And then took the people that made successful Star Wars games (Bioware) and told them to make a game about mechs
Being cliché, but anyone here after anthem got cancelled?
✋
For those wondering.
A multi kill is 8 kills all within 10 seconds of the last kill. (meaning you have up to 80 seconds.)
Not saying you're wrong, but that's the dumbest description of a "multi-kill" I've ever heard.
I got a Warframe ad after the video.
The better game, by a better publisher.
And it's free
A sign...a wake up call....
Wake up, Tenno...
0:18 - 1:03 never change man. You're too pure for this world.
Spectacular writing as always
That sounds just like Capcom working with MT Framework with Mega Man 11. (Long scripted story below)
MT Framework: Hey Capcom about that Mega man 11 game you wanted us to work with you on. We can include all the main and sub charaters in the game, make a great story line, include a lot more game play and make a riviting story line have more creative bosses and sub bossess from every single stage. Let the gamers feel how powerful and riviting the story line and Mega man has become with all the charaters, Reflet more with the background, have the background come into play with the for ground, and a great ending hinting at a sequal while we keep it great for casual and hard core gamers alike and add all the extra features plus all the charaters from the series for one price plus celebrating 30 years for Mega man Give it its anime feel like what all the fans remember even with a story base. Its really the Mega man game that everyone wants
Capcom: No way man cut half of that out, make the story more like the Archie Adventure series comics, limit most of the background interactions, forget Protoman and Base we don't want them in the story line, make the stages longer, More Gear base movments, change the intro and make the ending more melodramatic, it needs to be more happy base. Have Dr Light come in at the end and talk to Wally for the umpteenth time remove some of the other sub bossess you plan, they clutter the game play
MT Framework: Okay but you know we are more into Story based gameplay with extra in game features, After all you asked us to make Mega man 11 the best of the series and the series has been dying off due to lack luster story lines and making the stages longer makes the game play feel tidious
Capcom: Do it this way cause we owe your ass. This is how we see Megaman now. The fans don't know squat about Megaman.
MT Framework: But he was the reason why you did so well
Capcom: Do it now or else we'll get someone else and sell you off like a cheap leech that you are
MT Framework: But we're the main reason why your still in business, monster hunter world broke bounds, Lost planet redefined Capcom and the list goes on.
Capcom: Capcom made the games not you. Your just the people that we hire to make our games not the other way around. Just do what your told *Holds breath and throws a tantrum*
Mt Framework: okay fine we'll do it your way. WE hate it when you throw a hissy fit like this (Thank god we're still getting paid)
******After release on Mega man 11 it gets a average score of 7.5/10 not bad but its not the goal that Capcom wanted************
Capcom: Way to go MT Framework. YOU screwed up the game the player base is saying that its sub standard at best.
MT Framework: We did what you wanted and put in some extra speech dialog and refferences cause well it lacked depth otherwise.
Capcom: But they said that it needed all the charaters, just above average story line, cheesy game play, long stages, Childish, Some nice details to the background instresting sub bossess design, which we had more of them and the gear system is lacking
MT Framework: You told us to make the game this way or else it just got an average school of 7.5/10 that's generous and barley on par for us here at Framework plus its missing Base and Protoman. We had to show some other charaters to remaind the players that this was an addition to a Megaman game plus we had Block man quote Pink Floyd's "Just another brick in the wall" To show that we are still cunning.
Capcom: Nintendo Life gave it 9/10 so what do you say about that
MT Framework: I'm sure you paid them extra for that somehow in a private meeting. I refuse to believe that considering the fact we did Monster world , Lost planet etc and it did well.. oh wait you let us make that game for you at our own expense and or our own free will.
Capcom Shut it you. Now go to your room and think about what you have done. No dinner till you apolize to us and your taking the blame for it all, and forget about that bonus, we wanted much better from you . *Storms off and gloats somewhere else while leaving MT Framework locked up in a dark room*
Wow; I had no idea about any of this. I just knew, "Huh; a new Mega Man game after all these years? I might get that (I never actually did)." That sounds really bad.
I was waiting for this review for a long time
they publish a week earlier in the escapsit site
Yuzuru A thanks
there is a serious problem in the industry about confusing lore and story
I recently met a bloke at Bioware who basically agreed with all of this. The actual core gameplay loop is satisfying and fun. It's all the other padding buggery added by the publisher that ruins it. Also, apparently they were hoping to do the story better, but EA wanted them to focus on other stuff? It's all under NDA, so he couldn't say much of anything (and if he had, I wouldn't say, I'm no narc) but what he did say just makes me feel bad for Bioware.
what a load of bullshit
Watch this just to feel something
@0:33 AWWW! AWWWW! AWWWW!
Jesus F´ing Christ, i nearly choked on my god damn drink!
I laughing so hard my stomach hurts 🤣
Incredibly enjoyable and as per the usual, you hit the nail on the head Yahtz! I’ve been waiting for this for seven months! Thanks for giving Anthem a fair shake!
