    So he kinda liked it? I suppose that's a win for Keanu Reeves. Shame the game didn't appeal to him that much.

    • @Er404ChannelNotFound
      @Er404ChannelNotFound 7 ปีที่แล้ว +93

      Pretty sure he liked it, but didn't express as much love for it in the video. He doesn't want to sound redundant by repeating the praises everyone else is making for it, so he'd rather magnify the negative points for comedic effect. I'd advise you to check out Jim Sterling's review of the game wherein he gave it a 10/10 which is very rare for him. I don't want to put words into Yahtzee's mouth, but he's, in a sense, on the same wavelength as Jim Sterling as he once described in a Let's Play of his (I think it was one of the episodes of Let's Drown Out Dark Souls 2), which is why they ran a show together back in the day. So as far as I know, Yahtzee would agree with most of what Jim says, and he has probably read Jim's review before making his own review.

      I don't like that definition (or name, whatever). That's basically just a description of Dark Souls. Some of those features don't even make sense: what on Earth is "hard difficulty"? That describes everything from XCOM to Super Meat Boy to a cryptic crossword. What you mean is high enemy damage, long windups, animation priority and limited health resources.
      The only core aspects I would consider genre defining are 3rd person hack 'n' slash with swing arcs (to rule out spectacle fighters and the like), environmental storytelling, persistence after death and boss fights.
      P.S. I like "strategic hack 'n' slash"

      Yahtzee's whole thing is complaining. If he didn't complain it wouldn't be funny. Which is why you can't really listen to his videos as reviews per-se, unless you're horribly cynical and hate all games.
      Dark Souls has some of the best level and aesthetic design ever performed. Of course it's not as good. Very little of Nioh is completely garbage, if any of it. But it's not "some of the best level and aesthetic design ever" so yeah. Not up to the standard set by Dark Souls.

    • @thvvgu2054
      @thvvgu2054 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'd say it was better. Dark Souls has some good aesthetics and some areas are great but the rest are meh. Anor Londo is just a straight forward path. Blight Town is terrible. Lost Izalith is cancer. Duke's Archives are straight forward corridors. Then we have Dark Souls 2 + 3 with linear path ways and warping being required to navigate the world because most of the exploration is point A to B (especially in 3).

    • @ThePhilosogamer
      @ThePhilosogamer 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thvvgu2054 I second that. Having finally played Nioh (and all of the dlc) I was extremely impressed not only by the variety within each level's design, but also by the myriad of ways you could approach them based on your playstyle and build.
      In contrast, I've gone through all 5 of the souls games over half a dozen times each with different builds each time, yet still wound up going through almost every level exactly the same way irrespective of my stats due to the aforementioned linearity. Granted some levels in the souls games allow for flexible approaches (Huntsman's Copse, most of Demon's Souls' levels, etc.) and some levels in Nioh are more linear than others (Azuchi Castle & Haiji), but on balance, Nioh's level design is tighter and more varied than any Souls game so far.
      *sidenote: I'm shocked Yahtzee didn't make an explicit Diablo joke anywhere, given that's the third game Nioh draws its influence from (hence the constant loot, maze-like levels, etc.).

    The Amrita Kodama's bonus ended up being the only buff I needed from them. After you thrift through the gear you received last mission, just give the shite to them as an offering. Always ended up with a generous handful of elixers (15-30) and unless you sucked, that's really all you'd need to succeed

    I liked Nioh, but the biggest turnoff for me was the lack of variety. People gave bloodborne a lot of grief for its weapon variety, but Nioh only has 5 different weapons. You also have already seen every single enemy type in the game (other than bosses obviously) before you're even halfway through the game. Then you're just fighting the same dudes over and over, and while I don't agree with Yahtzee when he says it was terrible, the level design does leave something to be desired

      I definitely still liked it, but I was expecting more from it. For example, one thing I was REALLY hoping for was an actual unarmed combat system, with stances and skills and stuff. What we got was a teeny tiny bit better than dark souls, which isn't saying much

    My complain, personally, with Noihs level design is that it felt, for the most part, very flat. Like, not literally flat (Not that it doesnt approach that at times) but rather that 99% of the playspace can just be strolled onto from somewhere. Not a whole lot of dropping down onto things from above and such. Not a whole lot of loopy terrain that dumps you a shortcut back into an area youd forgotten about that makes things far more interesting (even if there was, it closes when you start the level again, so its not much use either way).
    Put simply, the level design is there to benefit the combat, not the exploration, and this is double noticeable when you find a corpse up on a rock somewhere that you have to take a long path to get to only to find a basic loot drop from it.
    I can enjoy the game for its Nioh, sure, but i long for the Dark Souls aspects too. The aspect that has us walk through a cathedral, then through the cathedral upper levels, then come back later to find were now going through the cathedrals rafters.

    • @gregsmw
      @gregsmw 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      also as som1 who has played all the soulsborne series and nioh i still say 1 is my favorite
      in terms of combat 2 is the best (though i think niohs combat is better) but the world and story of 1 is so much better then all the rest it just shoots ahead. i dont really get what you mean when you say the zones get worst after anor londo, as imo the best zones are the painted world (which is after anor londo) and the dlc zones, which are also after.
      the only zone after anor londo which i would actualy say is genuinly worse then the other areas is lost izalith, and that you can see is clearly just cos they ran out of time.
      TL:DR
      1 definetly had weaker combat then 2 and nioh, but the story and world design is the best of all the games, and that pushes it above imo
      nioh having the ebst combat of the games makes it a runner for 2nd.
      and unpopular opinion of the day, DS3 is by a massive margin the worst. it threw out everything that made the souls series good, its far too fast paced, there is no poise so your restricted in builds, the world design is mediocre at best and nostalgia bait at worst, the story is flat out just nostalgia bait and threw away all the progress in story 2 made despite 2s story being great. weapon arts added nothing, even ignoring the fact combat was more bloodborne then souls it was still worse then both BB and DS2. only thing it did well was boss design, and even then it fell flat in practice because of the combat turning every boss into a boring zerg rush

    • @gregsmw
      @gregsmw 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      BB was good, but im more a fan of the slower game so its a little behind 1 and 2 for me
      i didnt really enjoy anything from 3 all that much
      leagues worse then the others for me
      and i quite like the tomb of giants, dont think its that bad an area
      but izalith is definetly bad

      BEast Sauce, But it hardly compares to Nioh or the rest of the Souls series. Nioh beats them all in combat with the exception perhaps being Bloodborne. Dark Souls 1 still plays good but after the newer games, its flaws become apparent with the four directional rolling, delayed inputs and the easy to pull off backstabs, not to mention it lacks the complexity of the combat in the later games with a heavy weapon's heavy attack pretty much being able to stun everything (even giant Orienstein).

      I don't think you're alone, dude. Anyway, stay at a medium distance from her, listen for the sound queue for her paralyzing scream, dodge as late as possible when she charges you, always have antiparalytic needles on your hotbar in case you mess up, hit her two or three times after her kick combo or umbrella combo, if she stays in the air for too long you can run under her to make her try to drop down on you, you CAN also shoot her down with shuriken or kunai if you can throw enough to drain all of her stamina. Oh, and stay in low or medium stance, preferably low.

    Having jumped onto this game 4 years after the fact, I can confirm that most of Yahtzee's complaints are entirely correct even less than 2 hours into the game. I HATE the way equipment drops every 5 seconds so I need to find a safe corner to stop and compare it with my current gear so I can struggle to work out whether or not it's better (not always an obvious proposition when you don't know what all the stats actually DO or how much difference a few points either way will make) and the combat system is massively overcomplicated, with far too many abilities to unlock, some of which you don't even know if you'll use or not, especially when you have to unlock them separately for every individual weapon. And having to remember to use Ki Pulse after every single attack combo is just a chore more than anything else.

    Meh I fine Japanese theme worlds to be kind of boring and overuse honestly. Maybe its because the Japanese culture has never appeal to me all that much but I just feel like we don't use enough cultures in the world. Hell we don't use Christianity all that much because we are afraid we might offend someone, come on I want to see Jesus use his continental slicing sword in a game.

    The genre is "action RPG". Lets not get all abstract with subgenres just because Dark Souls is edgy. It's irritating enough tolerating all those meaningless music subgenres...

    • @jimbogreen7029
      @jimbogreen7029 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      But the rpg mechanics are pretty simple in the souls game though. I think think it's fair to classify them differently then, say, fallout, because the level design, character progression, and healing are all handled in pretty unique ways.

    • @69mickswagg
      @69mickswagg 7 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      SiCKenz people will know what you meanean when you say souls like. action RPG could be anything. there's nothing wrong with describing things using comparisons. stop being pretentious. souls isn't edgy. it's just much loved, and highly regarded. people who shit on it are the ones trying to be edgy.

    • @SiCKenz
      @SiCKenz 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Genres are for categorizing things with similar styles together. "Souls-like" doesn't describe anything at all. People tried to call Dragons Dogma a "souls-like". Its not. Its an RPG, with action driven gameplay. Just like Souls. This is opposed to something like Baldurs Gate which would just be a RPG, or Mass Effect (or Fallout), which would be an FPS RPG.
      Also, dark fantasy filled with themes of loss, regret, sadness etc... Yeah. Souls is edgy as fuck. All it needs to go with it is a Linkin Park album and a Hot Topic gift card. And I'll go ahead and say it... DS1 is overrated, DS2 is trash, DS3 is the best Dark Souls. Bloodborne is the best aRPG Fromsoft has made. And it is edgy as fuck as well.

    • @Cirac1
      @Cirac1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      SiCKenz Thing is Dragons Dogma isn't a souls like. but the subgenre exists. Soulslikes are a checkpoint based action rpg with death punishment mechacs. That's all.

    • @BosesBjorn
      @BosesBjorn 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Mass effect isn't an FPS though. Souls-like describes a specific kind of action RPG. If you play a game like Nioh and compare it to Dark Souls you can see why lumping them all into their own sub-sub genre might be useful.
      What an edgy as fuck opinion.
