How to Replace the Backup Reverse Rearview Camera - 2011 Hyundai Tucson IX35 Cheap DIY Replacement

Due to the awful build quality of these cars (the Hyundai Tucson aka ix35), everything fails and requires replacement after about ten years - including the backup camera aka reverse camera or rearview camera. The camera is a real bear to get to, nested inside the outside trim panel on the back of the tailgate. Fortunately an affordable cheaper direct fit aftermarket camera is available to replace the faulty original equipment camera.

this is a 2011 Hyundai Tucson and we're looking at it from the back because I'm going to show you what we had to do in order to replace the backup [Music] camera the backup camera is just beside the license plate the camera is mounted inside this trim panel that c covers the entire width of the car and this is what it looks like behind this trim panel the camera is right here this is the new camera it's a perfect fit and it works perfectly I'll show you more details in a minute I'll include a link to this camera in the video description it has a connector that matches perfectly and it's mounting bracket also matches perfectly now I'm going to show you what we had to do in order to get this trim panel off the trim panel has mounting studs that you can see here as well as mounting clips and we had to get in from the inside to remove the nuts that were on all these mounting studs so looking inside you can see that I removed this rear interior trim panel that is held in by all of these plastic rivets and also uh four screws with Philips head at the corners then with this panel off can get in through the Armature of the door to get to all of the mounting studs and clips here's the old camera and you can see the condition it's in and Whitey doesn't think much of this camera
either this is kind of an annoying job you're almost sure to break something as you do it and my main hope here is that I don't have to replace that entire exterior trim panel just a quick note you do need some of these little ratcheting screwdrivers to get the two mounting screws out of the camera there is absolutely no hope of getting any kind of regular screwdriver onto the mounting screws here it is all back together the interior trim panel is back on on the inside the exterior trim panel has been bolted in and U let's see how this all works out and here is the money shot with everything back together the camera is showing the backup lines and it is showing the approximate distance of car that is right behind us so everything is working this was an aftermarket camera I've heard that the original equipment cameras are out of stock permanently or semi-permanently very difficult to source so this one is doing a very good job for an aftermarket camera this car is going through a lot of what you might call restoration and um it's just a result of this awful build quality on these cars I think everything in here falls apart after about 10 years thank you for watching this video

How did you get those red mounting clips off? They’re giving me a hard time lol I also saw in another video someone said you need to remove the tail lights, did you do that? Thanks

I left the taillights in place. I popped/pried those clips out. I don't think it matter much if a few of the clips are damaged there are plenty of clips holding everything together.

How did you remove the exterior trim piece the camera is mounted on?

I went into the tailgate frame and released the clips that secure the trim to the tailgate and popped the trim piece off. Just like that
