Definitive guide to starting the ATR 42/72-600 from cold and dark in Microsoft Flight Simulator

  • Following guidance finally being released on the official Microsoft Flight Simulator TH-cam channel, we work through the real procedure that real pilots follow when preparing the aircraft for flight. In concert with this I have corrected the written checklist I put together on launch day - which we can now use going forward with some confidence.
    Here's where you can find the checklist:
    ko-fi.com/jonbeckett/shop
    Note that I miss out ALL of the checks that real pilots perform to ensure systems are operating correctly. This is both to save time, and in realisation that we are in a simulator where the aircraft is pretty much perfect each time we sit in it. I also don't use the built-in checklist in the EWD screen - I'll save that for another video :)

    You sure have worked hard and spent time figuring this plane out. With no manual, it's a challenge.. which I know you like. I haven't purchased it yet but will soon. Getting my yoke to work with is what's holding me up but I'll eventually will.

    great stuff. i'm 29 and have only ever flown small GA aircraft in the past, well, almost 20 years of flight simming. but this plane and your videos could actually be the one thing i've needed to get me into bigger airplanes and learning to fly them somewhat properly.

    Thanks for the vids and checklists. Ive been using both to create my own single page checklist for each plane. Just walk through each video, along with checklist you have put together, and then condense it down for my own use, using some abbreviations that
    later helps with location identification for switches etc. U = upper panel / C2 = column 2 / CL = center left….as an example. That takes me right to the button or switch needed, and at that point I am able to continue the flow from having previously “studied” the aircraft, which usually consists of about 3-4 weeks of non stop flying it, along with videos, checklists etc. After several week I am fairly comfortable with it and can move on to another aircraft to add to the mix

    Great video Sir,
    I've watched the official channel on this also, very helpful.
    I'm not overly concerned about the MCDU airways bugs, which I'm sure will be rectified in the near future.
    There are huge positives to take from this aircraft, systems, flight model and indeed how good it looks internally and externally.
    Shipping with no documentation was a slight disappointment, perhaps they will follow.
    The price point however is fantastic, excellent value in my opinion.
    I shall spend many hours flying Loganair Routes in this wonderful aircraft.

I was wrestling with all the electronics the other day, couldn't get my green/blue hydraulic systems going and I suspected had something to do with the AWCS being off. Then @15:37 when you want to start Eng 1, you thinking (I guess) the pump is not running (but it is RUN in green) you shut off pump 1 (OFF in white) and we can see that the X-feed in closed. • @jonbeckett

      I rarely use VNAV. Reference the charts for any altitude restrictions if following a STAR (use LittleNavMap if you don't have Navigraph), and then reference the pilot operating handbook for descent rates, or take it for a test flight to figure out what rate you can descend at in a given configuration.

    • @jonbeckett
      @jonbeckett  ปีที่แล้ว

      TRU = Rectifier. A Transformer Rectifier Unit (TRU) combines the functions of a Transformer and a Rectifier into one unit. In aircraft applications, the TRU converts the 120V AC power generated by the engine or APU generators or provided by a Ground Power Unit (GPU) to 28V DC power for use by various electrical components.

  • @AdminVortex762
    @AdminVortex762 ปีที่แล้ว

    Jonathan, any chance you could do one on Engine / Speed management? I've managed to import a flight plan into the MCDU and complete the flight with it but speed management vs the different management modes is eluding me! The Notch detent only appears to work with the target airspeed in Climb mode. Manual setting looks like it's purely an indicator bug.

    • @jonbeckett
      @jonbeckett  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is no auto-throttle. That's the first thing to realise. The notch setting is really just a power position that the engine can run in all day long without issue. When controlling speed, you can either use power, or RPM to achieve the same aim - most turbo-prop pilot operating handbooks will advise using RPM to control speed.

    • @AdminVortex762
      @AdminVortex762 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jonbeckett Oh, thanks. Seems I've missed it - how do I control Power and/or RPM? The aircraft's Notch setting seems to handle takeoff and climb ok but in Cruise, speed is all over the place. And I thought the BAe 146 was a pain in this regard!

      You can move it manually, but you don't need to as it is automatically changed after TO and when in landing configuration. It stops you from pulling the PL below FI=Flight Idle while on ground the PL low point is GI=Ground Idle. The T lever below can override the automatic set position.

      @jonbeckett  ปีที่แล้ว

      I forgot that you don't have propeller control in the ATR. You do have power and condition though - which also serves as fuel shut-off. If you pull the power back to idle, the plane will lose speed very quickly in level flight. You just need to plan ahead.

    This all worked fine for me except 1 thing. I could not turn OFF the prop lock on engine 2 after the engines were running. Thanks for making this video. I would have been COMPLETELY lost! [UPDATE] However, this plane does not play well with my Saitek peripherals. A constant fight between the flight panel and the navigation in the plane. The electrics all shut off whenever I hit the gear up or down on the switch panel. You can't over-ride the throttles and engine condition when you have the throttle quadrant installed. I suspect it I did some SPADnext work, I could probably get it working. FURTHER UPDATE] - Apparently the issue where the Logitech switch panel landing gear toggle shuts off the power or avionics has been around for a couple of years. It does this on the ATR and the TBM, but not most of the other planes.

    • @pumpakatten
      @pumpakatten ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jonbeckett Unfortunately that doesn't work either. Oddly enough I have noticed that if I start a game with the engines running and I do not touch the throttles at all, then I can move the condition levers into the Cut-off position. But if I make any adjustment to the throttles, say, rev up and then back down to idle, the condition levers will refuse to move into the cut-off position.

    • @metzgergva

      Best is to delete any assignment of your HW levers for propeller and fuel by generating an ATR specific profile. By that you can easily just use the mouse to move them between the various positions.

    Hi I have an issue here...I followed your tutorials on the cold & dark startup for the ATR 72 but then after i disable chocks & release the parking brakes with the engines on & everything I can't even steer the aircraft left or right via the rudder pedal using my joystick what could be the problem here? basically the aircraft is on the ground taxiing to the runway for take off but the aircraft just go straight instead of turning left or right at all i turn my joystick to either left or right it just won't turn it just go straight & also I can't even brake the aircraft I press the button on the joystick to brake the aircraft and it just won't brake & slow down the aircraft & I have to press the button on the joystick where I engage the parking brake then only the aircraft stops. What could be the problem here? thanks
    another thing to add on there's something called "SELECT LNAV" what does that mean? does it mean the aircraft can't detect the flight plan that I've set on the MCDU FMC or it could be something else?
