Brings back a lot of good memories of when I flew an AC690 full of bank checks 4 nights a week out of Lawrence, MA (LWM) to BOS, to JFK, to the hub in DET where we would meet 8 Shrikes from all over the midwest, do the sort, reload the airplane with the NY stuff in the cabin and the BOS checks in the rear baggage compartment, then fly back to JFK, unload the cabin, up to BOS, unload the back, and finally back to LWM, put the plane to bed. We typically started the night at 8pm, returning at around 6am, flying about 6:30-7hrs total time each night, never once cancelled for snow or fog, we just flew right through it all. I flew this run 4 nights a week, Monday night to Friday morning, all in one plane, N9166N. This was 1979-1983. After 4 years of that and 4,000 hours of night flying in N9166N, I left the Part 135 company (Bird Leasing) to join the NH ANG up at Pease AFB. I’ve been at Delta since 1985 and now I’m flying the A350 to Tokyo and Seoul, but I really is flying 9166N! She was my first love, and you never forget your first!
A great aircraft and super versatile often overlooked for why I have no idea, certainly an all time great, as is the Fairchild Merlin iiic which has thunderous performance range comfort economy and great full fuel payload, for me the Merlin just edges it as the best in class.
I wish Gulfstream had continued to manufacture, support and refine this aircraft. The new company does a good job of zero-timing and upgrading the avionics on existing airframes but more of these airplanes are needed and could be sold. If King Airs are viable Twin Commanders could be too.
