I smiled through this whole video. And that's really saying something! What a spotless, well maintained and well updated Aero Commander! And the captain flew it like it was his favourite ball glove. Perfectly! I knew the yoke was completely different and I'm glad it was commented on. Outstanding choice in upgrade! Perfect video! Brought back old memories.

I love the Aero Commander. I've flown a similar one a few times myself. Very smooth in typical summer light turbulence. The one I flew was a Turbine version. Good climb and nice cruising speed. IIRC it also uses less fuel than the Orenda's. Classic looks and really amazing aircraft.

My parents once lived at the Spruce Creek fly-in community in Florida where the strip was 5,000 x 150. Your video felt like you were landing on a taxi way. FYI: each Florida county got a field of 3 strips of 5k x 150’ during WW2 as the US Military was gearing up for an air war against Germany. Most of the fields if not all were turned over to the counties as the war ended.

I love this plane. The Commander was my favorite besides the J-3 cub my neighbor had. But unfortunately the commander was lost in an incident involving a microburst during takeoff at GCN. Thankfully everyone "walked" away with minor injuries. Sadly the plane was a total loss.

Always liked the Commanders. Try an A56TC if you can find one (43MC). When it comes to fuel burn, these are time machines. I could go, do business and come home in one day, whereas a single might be a day to get there, take care of business, but have to wait until the next morning to return. ATC confused us with an A36 on 3 occasions. Looking down at the Gulf when you're supposed to be in Houston is one thing, but up close and personal with a B-1 is a whole different experience. Thankfully, those B-1 pilots really know how to fly.

Sorry for the formatting (don't know why it's like this). This is kinda long, but...My dad told me & our family this story...He ferried an Aero
Commander in the late 60s or early 70s from Arizona to San Antonio.
There was an issue with the gears & other work the plane needed
before being sold to a buyer in Texas & he was going to do the work in
San Antonio. He decided to make the flight in spite of the gears
inability to retract & the impossibility of working on them at the
departure airport. Over mountains en route he experienced an engine
failure, and shortly thereafter the other engine quit (a fuel system
problem of some sort). Being a registered ferry flight he had a
parachute on but was very reluctant to jump. However, being over
mountainous terrain dad knew he had no choice...until he realized, or
thought, he was too low to open the chute. He uttered a string of
profanity as he climbed back into the left seat and started thinking.
Dad was an incredible pilot & mechanic, flew & worked on the
Howard line of big piston business planes & later in life had a
bunch of STCs on Cessnas & was always restoring one or two 152s or
172s. He could outperform an engineer & had an incredible aviation
mindset. Well, it didn't take him long after sitting back down to push
the primer button, upon which the engine roared back to life! I believe
he said the prop would not feather. Of course the primer only allows a
burst of fuel into the cylinder so he hit the other primer & that
engine also came to life. So, he says, he flew most of the route between
Arizona & San Antonio going from one primer to the other, obtaining
power for just a few seconds on each engine! He also explained how the
primer controls (buttons?) were too far apart to operate simultaneously
necessitating using one at a time. You'd have to know my dad to
understand why he didn't land at the nearest airport. So, any pilots of
older Commanders...Is this even remotely possible? Dad wasn't a liar,
but was known to embellish stories like this for entertainment value.
But when he told us this I got the impression it really did happen. What
do you think? Can an Aero Commander be safely flown with the gears
hanging out? Can it fly at a cruise speed slower than VLE? Are the
primer controls beyond the reach of two extended fingers? Are they
    buttons in older Commanders? Thanks!

I wish I had been in that left seat! I took ground school in 8th grade from my science teacher who was a saber pilot in Korea. He was shot down over enemy territory and broke both of his legs when he bailed out. A North Korean family hid him and nursed him back to healthe, but they had no idea how to set the fractures in his legs, so he was hardly able to walk and never flew again. In my science class I jumped right into the flight segment and never left, even though we were supposed to rotate through the several disciplines he was teaching. He mentored my buddy and I and by the end of the year, if we had the money we could have gone for our licenses. Too bad northern one of us could afford the classes. I loved every minute fit, and all of his stories! Thank you Mr. Marsiglia!

Flew to Ft. Lauderdale Exec? My dad used to fly out of there when I was a toddler. Had the Commander's sister: the Aerostar.

Awesome , his back yard is a runway. Commander The Bob Hoover special and his wonderful coffee pouring while doing acrobatics.

Lol my old man was just talking to me about this guy. He and my mom own a little shop in downtown Mansfield and his daughter is one of his new employees there. He came up there about a week ago and told my dad about the commander. Pretty funny to stumble on this video.
