  • The start procedure for the Turbo Commander 690B, followed by taxi and takeoff.
My apologies for some pretty poor word usage during this video. Words have meaning, especially in aviation and there is no real excuse for this. There is only one rudder on the 690B, not sure why I kept using the plural.

Actually we joke about that all the time, departing RW30, in order to get to Tucson from Safford you actually have to taxi 15 minutes east so that you can then fly west for 30 minutes. Same thing when we leave Tucson on RW29, by the time we get to the end of the runway we should have just kept taxied all the way back to Safford.

    • @FlyingWildAZ
      @FlyingWildAZ  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

At cruise we usually set the engines for 300lbs/hr fuel burn per side. This will normally equate to about 500HP per engine at 98% RPM. Performance on these setting is usually 200 knots indicated.

There's no mixture on a turbine. The fuel is either off or on and the systems deal with metering. Mixture controls are a thing of the 1930s and it is ridiculous that aircraft built after the 60s still have them. Even more ridiculous that aircraft are being built with mixture controls today. The only place I have seen a mixture control outside of aircraft was on 1940s Matchless and BSA motorcycles.

Too bad we the head set cancelled the engine/prop sounds. Taking the con levers out of GI to full forward makes a beautiful sound. I do it before entering the runway. 840 and 900 time. Ted Smith aircraft are lovely. Next best thing is an Aerostar.

    nice pretty airplane...
this plane with twin motors needs opposite spins same as V-22 design...
    what kind of digitalcamera video...
    why video shake shake shake

Contra rotation twins is often quite complicated logistics wise, there are few aircraft where it makes sense.
For example, the P-38 required it to make it a stable gun platform, and it was relatively simple to accomplish because the Allison engines it used were designed from the outset to be easily reversable, and operate nearly identically in both CW and CCW. Most civilian engines arent designed with any of that in mind.
Similarly, the V-22 has a contra rotation requirement. In vertical flight, the cotrol surfaces are basically useless, and those massive blades are providing the entirety of the lift and control. The massive torque they generate if they spun the same way would cause the vehicle to yaw uncontrollably into a spin, and crash, much like a helicopter without a tail rotor (all twin helicopters like the Chinook require contra rotation for the same reason).
In fact, the V-22's propulsion system is insanely complex. The vehicle would be uncontrollable both in horizontal and vertical flight if propulsion is not provided to both props. So not only do its engines rotate for VTOL, they are also linked together through the wings, so one engine can drive both rotors.
In fact, it makes sense to not have contra rotation on a shrike. Pilots in training (such as aero commander pilots might be) SHOULD learn what it takes to fly a twin with a critical engine out, as a lot of twins dont have contra rotation for expense, complexity, reliability and logistics reasons.
As for the camera, he's probably using a gopro or some other action cam, not all of them have built in stabilization.

I used to work for a freight company that operated Metroliners. Every time one would taxi nearby, people on the ramp would do the "Garrett Salute" (your left index finger goes in your left ear and your right index finger goes in your right ear)! Seriously, though, great engines. If I'm not mistaken, I think Honeywell took over the operation.

I flew the 690 in the early '80's as a young ,hungry 135 cargo pilot. Loved the airplane. Once you get used to Aero Commander steering you don't like anything else.

Tim You have to position the camera so that the instrument panel is not underexposed. It is the view of the instruments at the right exposure that makes these videos so interesting. I am not as concerned about the view outside as I am with the flight and engine instruments. Videos by Steve Kinevo and P1D have set a pretty high standard for picture quality to the point where I expect it in similar videos like yours. You fly an interesting aircraft, but I really would appreciate better quality video. Your dialogue is good. Thank you! Patrick from Albuquerque

Patrick, I'm am actually doing some training in Adobe Premier Pro this week to see how I can have better panel/outside window exposure with my new Beech Premier jet videos. I have struggled trying to render videos to the high level of fidelity of Kinevo and P1D I assume they just got better camera equipment then me or my render settings in PP are just wrong. I have looked at both Kinevo and P1D's different camera angles and plan to implement more variety in my own future videos. Thanks for the constructive criticism, well received and as stated noted and working on it!
