Great video, thanks for doing that! Brings back a lot of good memories of when I flew an AC690 full of bank checks 4 nights a week out of Lawrence, MA (LWM) to BOS, to JFK, to the hub in DET where we would meet 8 Shrikes from all over the midwest, do the sort, reload the airplane with the NY stuff in the cabin and the BOS checks in the rear baggage compartment, then fly back to JFK, unload the cabin, up to BOS, unload the back, and finally back to LWM, put the plane to bed. We typically started the night at 8pm, returning at around 6am, flying about 6:30-7hrs total time each night, never once cancelled for snow or fog, we just flew right through it all. I flew this run 4 nights a week, Monday night to Friday morning, all in one plane, N9166N. This was 1979-1983. After 4 years of that and 4,000 hours of night flying in N9166N, I left the Part 135 company (Bird Leasing) to join the NH ANG up at Pease AFB. I’ve been at Delta since 1985 and now I’m flying the A350 to Tokyo and Seoul, but I really is flying 9166N! She was my first love, and you never forget your first!

Had hours in the Aero-Commander, but sadly never a turbo. Some compare the TC to an MU2, but that's not a good comparison. I love Commanders and love seeing them still used and enjoyed today. Great video !

Is this a new aircraft? How does it compare to the Pilates PC-12NGX?, what is estimated cost with upgrades?

How long does it take to get around the county at 300 kts? I’m not a LEO, but that seems a bit over kill.

Turbo commander is my dream plane. Good stall characteristics, plenty of power, nice cruise speed, stable IFR platform, has an airliner cockpit feel. Good looking.

A family friend had one of these in 1957 that I got to take many trips in. The pilot would let me "fly" it which was pretty cool for a 13 year old.

He said this is a pilot's airplane. How true! I knew Reed Pigman back in the 60's. He owned and flew a Twin Commander and knew that airplane better than anything else in the world. His calculations of weight and balance, air temperature, and dew point led him to show off from time to time. How so? At V1/Vr he didn't lift the nose ...he retracted the gear! The altitude of the plane didn't vary by six inches, and he would hold that position until nearing the end of the runway before pulling back into a 60 degree angle climb. It was fun to watch! And Reed was a great pilot having tested and researched IFR insturments for the government back in the 30's. Ironically, it was the weather that took his life and the lives of over 80 G.I.'s in April of 1966. He was piloting a Lockheed Electra at night in a fierce storm over Ardmore OK ...which had no ILS system -- just a VOR approach. Low on fuel and foul weather everywhere in a 200 mile radius he had no choice but to proceed. (Kindly keep in mind this is PRE- weather satellites! ...the weather was strictly a good guess -- and sometimes the forecasts were wrong. I have flown that VOR approach into Ardmore personally -- and it can be very "iffy.") In short, he missed his approach in very rough weather (massive thunderstorms) and crashed into the Arbuckle Mountains killing everyone including a stewardess I had dated. I was present near the crash site and saw the flames from the wreckage. It was awful! In the aftermath some say Reed had a heart attack and slumped over the controls. That is the most likely scenario as it is nearly inconceivable that a pilot with his skill could have failed to properly set his altimeter to avoid the Arbuckles at the end of a runway he had landed at hundreds of times. Especially in that kind of bad weather! It is usually boredom and/or complacency that leads to this type of disaster. But the rotten weather would have had the pilots on high alert -- and with the precious cargo (human lives) they were carrying they certainly would have been at their keenest! Mysteriously, Reed was cremated immediately and BEFORE an autopsy! So no one will ever know exactly what happened. I don't know why I wrote all this -- it just sort of came to me when I was commenting on the Commander ...sorry -- but I'm not deleting. What I've said is all true.

Afterthought -- Having not recounted this event in decades, I just read an article about this crash published on a site called Air Live. Then I read Wikipedia's account of the same event. SOMEBODY HAS THEIR FACTS WRONG! One account says he overshot the runway and the plane burst into flames. This is not what I remember. Sitting in the cafeteria on campus (which was closed at that evening hour), a friend of mine remarked at the time, "Oh Boy ...listen to that! They've missed their approach!" (The screaming loudness of the engines is what made it obvious he was going around.) Then he laughed and said, something like, "C'mon Reed ...You!? Missing an appraoch? Hah haha!" Then came the BOOM and everyone knew what had happened. I am wrong that no one survived. What I just read said there were 18 survivors. The account by the Chicago Tribune, which my father cut out and saved for me, quoted one survivor as saying, "The plan wobbled all over the place as we were coming down. Then the plane hit." That doesn't sound like an overshoot to me! Also, the plane crashed into the Arbuckle Mountains (medium-sized hills, actually) -- that couldn't happen if he went off the end of the runway. The first two accounts (mentioned above) state that Pigman had falsified his medical records because he had heart problems and diabetes ...either of which would have disqualified him from a first class medical certificate. That is true! { As I recall Reed's best friend -- at least, on campus at AF -- was a huge fat guy appropriately named "Tiny." As I recall Tiny was the first guy at the crash scene. He found Reed's body and saw to it that he got to a hospital (or morgue) first! Then arranged his cremation immediately the next morning (Saturday). Tiny evidently knew Reed has falsified his medical records and was trying to protect him.} I'm speculating, of course. I attended the first day session of the FAA inquiry which was held on campus. Memory fails ...but I seem to recall an uproar over Reed having been cremated before an autopsy could be done. However, the accounts in the Tribune and the other articles I mentioned say that an autopsy WAS done on him; and the conclusion is that he died of a heart attack while at the controls. Is it possible the government lied in order to avoid law suits by relatives of the dead and injured! Perish the thought! After 54 years my memory cannot be trusted ...but I'm not sure I trust the official account offered up after the crash either -- especially the part about implying he went off the end of the runway. If that were true, how did the wreckage end up in the Arbuckles? And btw, those hills are directly to the west/northwest of the airport making it unlikely he had ever tried to land on runway 8 (due east) as the accounts reported.

Best twin ever made. Keep looking after them and they can last forever. I know as I have a 500S with 340Hp engines instead of the 295 HP engines .

I wish Gulfstream had continued to manufacture, support and refine this aircraft. The new company does a good job of zero-timing and upgrading the avionics on existing airframes but more of these airplanes are needed and could be sold. If King Airs are viable Twin Commanders could be too.

A great aircraft and super versatile often overlooked for why I have no idea, certainly an all time great, as is the Fairchild Merlin iiic which has thunderous performance range comfort economy and great full fuel payload, for me the Merlin just edges it as the best in class.
