- Beginning with Super Mario Bros. Wonder Nintendo introduced new voice actor who will replace legendary Charles Martinet who was giving his voice to our beloved moustache Italian plumber. Let's compare these voices and see if Kevin Afghani will manage to deliver cult classic experience!

If they ever make another Smash game, Kevin will finally be able to make new voice clips for Mario, Luigi AND Wario. Even in new games it will sound so awesome

Kevin’s rendition is pretty one point, if anything his voice makes Mario sound a little bit younger.

It would make sense considering that he’s channeling into Charles Martinet’s early Mario from the days of the N64 and GameCube.

You can definitely hear his voice crack at times. There's obv room for improvement. But I really like his younger and more giddy (higher pitch) approach to Mario as a character. It'll be fun to hear this new guy develop and refine Mario's new voice!

Yeah I've seen a lot of people comparing Kevin's voice with Charles in a bad way, as if he "isn't at Charle's level" but they don't think about how a new voice actor can give so much more else for a voice/character

This made me smile. Mr. Martinet has a sweet voice, while Mr. Afghani has a funny one. I have no complaints.
Wonder Mario sound's kinda like a cartoon character, while Charles sounds like an absolutely kind man.

Definitely prefer Charles but the difference isn’t crazy noticeable. Will be easy to get used to over time.

Kevin does a pretty great job. Voice is a little higher pitched, but it still sounds like the plumber we all know and love.

Kevin definitely sounds like Charles' earlier renditions of Mario.
Kevin sounds a not higher that's like not really noticeable when you don't compare it side by side
So much history behind Charles’ voice as mario…playing Mario in all our classic favorite games - from Mario 64 , mario party, to mario kart and everything in between. Definitely end of an era but excited to hear and see what’s next for our beloved plumber! 😢❤
Charles gave all the templates, and so the new cast can move forward, thanks for all these years Charles. .he definitely gave life to these characters.
you can tell the difference, but it's still very good. his high-pitches are sometimes giveaways and lack of trill in the r's.
Let's hope Kevin doesn't see that as a problem

Man I really miss good old Charles Martinet's voice talents for a long time before!
Considering Mario is confirmed to he in his 20s, it kinda makes sense for him to have a youthful sounding voice. And also matches his friendly personality.
While his voice still needs a little bit more time to get used to for me (more specifically his sentences like "Mario number one!"), I am still so happy that this is the voice we got. It could definitely be a LOT worse.
I'd personally have the video compare his voice clips to the ones from Mario Kart 8 though. That's what Charles has sounded like in later Mario games such as Odyssey and is definitely what Kevin's voice is based off.
You can definitely tell the difference with Mario, but he did a much better job than Chris Pratt. Luigi is almost identical.
His Luigi sounds good until he says actual words. Then it sounds way off

Kevin did a great job in Wonder, looking forward to hearing more of his voice work. Charles will always be the OG and should of been the voice of Mario in the Movie.
I would never have expected or anticipated the new VC to sound exactly like Charles nor would I really want it to. Truth be told, Charles' voice for the characters changed over the years and undoubtedly Kevin nails them. This is without question Mario. He does such a great job I actually didn't even realize it was different until after I had heard it wasn't Charles. Fantastic work Kevin.
Honestly considering Kevin is 41 years younger than Charles Martinet, the voices are pretty damn close!

While no one can truly replace Charles Martinet as Mario, I think Kevin Afghani does a great job. They definitely picked a good successor.
Agreed! The dude has been voicing Mario for ages which means he has more experience and tones for Mario, while this new VA struggles with some lines he definitely sounds more energetic and dosent completely have experience on voice acting with a character who barley speaks.
I wished more people would back off and let the new va warm up to them a bit before they start insulting the poor dude. Definitely think this new voice actor has potential!

While charles will always be the mario, luigi, wario, & waluigi of my childhood, the new va brings something... new, and I guess **wonderful** to the character with his difference in how certain iconic voice clips are different. Make it feel like a new era. New ideas, new people, new places, new stories, new adventures for us to discover!

There’s room for improvement but i actually like the timbre of his voice compared to martinet, makes mario sound even more fun and playful, fitting.
😂 what? Martinet sounded more refined and natural. Kevin sounds like he’s trying so hard that his voice breaks several times. You can hear his voicing breaking especially when he uses actual words, that’s also when you can noticed how off he is

What's curious is that the first pair of clips you chose is perhaps the one where the difference is the most noticeable. And there are a few sets where Kevin's reading actually comes closer to the Mario voice I expect to hear. Either way, you can tell them apart when listening back to back and without anything in the background, but while playing the game it's really not noticeable at all. Charles will always be the definitive Mario, has done a great job all these years, and I wish him all the best in his future endeavors. But they picked a fantastic successor. Kevin sounds like Mario, period.

What I definitely felt while playing this game is that the change in Mario's voice is quite new and refreshing. Though, I think the old voices we hear when Mario lose a life is better than that of new ones..

Love to hear Kevin havin' fun with Mario! His voice gives Mario a younger, higher pitched, equally energic and a fresh sound- heard that when I was playing the Super Mario Bros Wonder. Charles Martinet passed the torch to the right person. I have watched the Super Mario Bros The Movie today again. Loved to hear Charles in it. This was a nice way to finish his voice acting carreer as Mario. He wil be forever our Mario.

He sounds great, my only concern really is other characters when it comes to other releases. We didn't just lose Mario's voice, we lost Luigi and Wario as well! I heard an advert with Wario talking and it sounded really bad, too different but im not sure if this is the voice actor or just someone they got to do the ad

Like, he ain't as bad as Chris Pratt from the Movie, or the one guy who voice Mario in Mario Hotel (yes he's performance in the cutscenes were funny as hell, but he didn't feel or even sounded like Mario)

Kevin does sound like an imitation, but you do have to listen for it, so it ain’t no big deal.

I feel like Martinet keeps his characters at a consise level of audio and rarely deviate unless in extremes, where as Afghani has a problem with both Mario and Luigi currently where he comes off as too nasaly and you hear his real voice bleed into his performances. I like that he wants to give his own take and give them some more emotion, but his audio consistency needs work personally.
The only difference is that Kevin's pitch is high, so he really needs to try doing a lower register on his voice

@@akuseru85 Let’s be real, Martinet’s gotten older, and Mario’s had a lower and lower register overtime. I think Afghani’s Mario sounds closer to Martinet in the GameCube era, which makes for a similar but unique enough take from modern Martinet

If Nintendo is planning on releasing the next 3D Mario on 64’s 30th anniversary, they should get Charles to voice Mario one last time. Have that game serve as his grand sendoff before fully passing the torch to Kevin.

There are certain parts in which Kevin sounds scarily accurate... it is VERY impressive already. What an amazing job. The legacy seems in good hands.
Kevin rejuvenated Mario a little bit hahahaha brought the old plumber back to his 'voice cracking teenage years'. No hate on Kevin, I'm enjoying his work so far and it'll be a voice that'll be easy to get used to over time.

I actually really like his new voice! Of course Charles will always be the goat, but it feels like Mario is even more lively and goofy. Same with Luigi too. The new VA definitely exceeded my expectations.

I think Kevin has done an amazing job so far, given the shoes he has to fill. We all love Charles, but it was inevitable that he would have to retire at some point. Over 30 years as the iconic voice of one of the most beloved characters of all time... quite a legacy!

Gotta give props to Nintendo, Charles Martinet, and everyone else involved in the recast. They did a very good job providing the smoothest transition possible from one Mario voice to the other. When they could've announced Martinet's retirement when it happened, they instead waited until after the trailer came out to clear things up. I feel like people would've had a lot tougher time getting used to Kevin's voice without this overlap. Can't wait to see how he continues to improve as the voice of Mario in the future.

Growing up with Charles Martinet it'll only ever feel right with him, but Kevin does give a "rebirthed Mario" tone which is about the best way to have handled this. Mario's much more lively now

I don't mind the new guy but I feel weird comparing these line takes to Martinets stuff as I feel these will be one off to Mario Wonder specifically and we'll probably have him do a "vertical slice" for what we are expecting game to game the NEXT title. Wonder doesn't seem like a typical Mario game the same way we had 4 New Super Mario games with little "extraneous" vocalization for the sound effects.
DEFINITELY prefer Charles voice.

Kevin is doing a really solid job, but even if he wasn’t i still think he’d deserve some credit. Dude is following up the guy who maybe provided the most well known voice of any video game character ever, that is a MASSIVE task.
