It would not work well having Mario as the face for the franchise being brave and also having Luigi trying to match that, I'm sure they had no plans to even make Luigi they just needed a colour swap to identify the second player in super mario bros, probably came up with the name on the spot because it made sense for them to be brothers since they just wanted to change the colour.. DokiDoki Mario 2 by chance made him an important character and they sure struck gold since it helped to make it a franchise. Like imagine they drop Luigi after the two Japanese games it's wild to me how important the American Mario 2 was because it cemented that the franchise would sell in America, probably the most important video game for Nintendo because they have continued the character designs for Peach Luigi and Toad in all games based off a re-skin.
Nah, Luigi had already had the shy/timid personality as far back as the old Mario cartoons and comics. I remember even in the Super Mario Super Show, Luigi was generally the cowardly one while Mario was the hero. Though I suppose you can argue that Martinet was the one who made that personality canon.
I met Charles once. He was a very kind and fun guy. He even voiced as Mario and call my wife "Super Princess Yoko." It made us really happy seeing as he really helped make my childhood great.
Sad thing is we've already had a personality for Luigi going back to the late 1980s with the initial cartoon show that had a live action portion which further expanded on luigi`s personality in 1990 with Super Mario Bros 3 cartoon show. So charles coming up with his weird horrible sounding Mario and Luigi voices in Late 1996 was an abortion of the franchise for those of us that grew up with hearing Mario and Luigi from 1989 - 1990 with 91 episodes being produced between the two shows.

But the stubbornness of good oldd Koji Led to him being the voice of Luigi for the first two Mario party games. which is stupid. Sorry Koji, but I’m on Julian’s side. He definitely sounds more like Toad. Well… Not the modern day Toad, but the voice they used back then. He sounds identical to that Toad. You make a better composer, then a voice Director.

I know I came after the party, but funnily enough Julien Bardakoff still works as a translator but for Ubisoft, and worked on the translation of Mario + Rabbids : Spark of Hope (which is even funnier because Rabbids are a French licence as much as Rayman)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Super Smash Bros. Melee was a weird hybrid of the two voices. I believe the game used Charles' Mario voice clips but pitched them up to match Julian's portrayal. A weird relic of this 2 Luigi voices era.

I find the slightly deeper voice in Mansion 3 to be quite cinematic, it’s like Charles was getting more in tune with the character over time (the first game IMO sounds like exaggeration of the voice to lend to how scared Luigi is)
That really does suck that he didn't get to voice Toad. I'm not sure why they didn't leave the desicion up to him I mean he literally wanted to voice Toad and not Luigi. I miss the old toad voice. The one that would scream when I bumped him in Mario kart. And the one that sounded happy in Mario party one. Now he sounds like he smoked too many cigarettes
There was a good while when Martinet would seemingly alternate from game to game whether to differentiate Luigi by making him high-pitched or low-pitched. The Mario and Luigi series does the former ("Go Weegee!") while his grunts in Super Paper Mario are pretty deep. But I guess nowadays it's not pitch at all that distinguishes him, it's the "wobble" to the voice.
he's too old and not an actual game history buff to know the ONE time someone else had recorded Luigi's voice at the time Mario Kart 64 was being developed at the same time as Super Mario 64 was. and Nintendo didn't "decide" between Julien and Charles based just on "whatever they felt like" like the video says, they've always reused voice recordings whenever it's convenient for development time/budget constraints and that was the case for Mario Party 1 and 2 (and MK Super Circuit as well, no mention in the video of the characters' voices being recycled specifically from the Japanese version of MK64, with some clips that were probably from the same recording session that went unused for the N64 game).
I swear I can't ever help but smile whenever I hear Charles's voice. I started replaying Luigi's Mansion 3 yesterday and I found myself smiling and giggling as soon as I started. This man's voice performances bring me so much joy.

Melee, Luigi does not use Julien Bardakoff as the voice actor, nor did Charles Martinet record new lines for Luigi. Instead, in both games, Luigi uses Mario's voice lines from Mario 64, but pitched up quite a bit.
EDIT: And as someone else mentioned in the replies: Julien Bardakoff (and all the Japanese Mario Kart 64 lines), were reused for Mario Kart Super Circuit

That really does suck that he didn't get to voice Toad. I'm not sure why they didn't leave the desicion up to him I mean he literally wanted to voice Toad and not Luigi. Makes me kinda feel bad for Julien because he basically flew all the way to Japan just to be denied of that opportunity which would honestly piss me off if I were him. But what really bothers me is the fact that Koji Kondo himself said his voice was more suitable for Luigi. Ummmm... Mario and Luigi’s voices starting off as a prank is one of my favorite things.
There was a good while when Martinet would seemingly alternate from game to game whether to differentiate Luigi by making him high-pitched or low-pitched. The Mario and Luigi series does the former ("Go Weegee!") while his grunts in Super Paper Mario are pretty deep. But I guess nowadays it's not pitch at all that distinguishes him, it's the "wobble" to the voice.
i talked to charles at fan expo and he said that he voiced luigi for every single game and no one else voiced him
he's too old and not an actual game history buff to know the ONE time someone else had recorded Luigi's voice at the time Mario Kart 64 was being developed at the same time as Super Mario 64 was. and Nintendo didn't "decide" between Julien and Charles based just on "whatever they felt like" like the video says, they've always reused voice recordings whenever it's convenient for development time/budget constraints and that was the case for Mario Party 1 and 2 (and MK Super Circuit as well, no mention in the video of the characters' voices being recycled specifically from the Japanese version of MK64, with some clips that were probably from the same recording session that went unused for the N64 game).
Such a shame Charles Martinet isn't voicing Mario and Luigi in the upcoming film…
