Rip brother. Miss your presence in the reefing community. Always had such a passion for reefing and sharing the knowledge. I continue refer to your videos and will for years to come. Blessings.
The difference in shimmer between the mangrove tank (Kessil) and the G5/G6 tank (before you turned off the Kessil lighting) was very noticeable. The G6 is just too flat for my taste.
Nice video Jake. I believe that there is still room for a part III here you go through actual spectrum variances across the different channels and color modes using a spectrometer, the actual coverage with a horizontal grid of measurements at different depths and color blending. I really do not see the point of upgrading from G5s unless you actually want to change from a pro to a blue or vice versa. On the point of XR15s vs XR30s, I was like that a couple of years ago and from a technical perspective makes all the sense: better spread, less hotspots and better cooling (twice the number of fans) for about the same price. However, after running 8 XR15 Blues in a rimless peninsula with a mess of cables and power supplies I have moved in a completely different direction. Aesthetics for me and arquitectural integration of the entire tank setup are extremely important so I am now running 3 ATI Stratons and very happy with it.
Looking at the color of the lights in reflection on the water's surface was key! It really lets you see the true tone of the led's when you changed the individual colors!
One thing i was afraid for looks real, G6 has less shimmer than G5 probably because of the wider spread. The G5 XR30 was already flat looking (way more flat than the XR15 which's shimmer i love), the G6 XR30 is even worse on this aspect. But hey, nobody seems to care fore shimmer anyway nowadays. 😀
Really good video thanks Reef Builders. More blending is great, but I'm really disappointed they've added more spread. I've got 2 x XR15 G5's over my Reefer 250 using the Ecotech mounts and there is already a lot of light spill into the room, i really do not want more, it's just wasted PAR at that point. I'm considering a 3d printed light shade as it is with the G5s.
Spread is bad as always. They have to work on the lenses or just let them sink into the fixture to avoid getting dazzled. Mitras LX does not, New Straton pro does not, but g5 does very bad…
Good video thanks, upgrade or downgrade?near no difference visually, more spill in the room , less shimmer and more light in the face .the only good thing a bit more uv but not enough to make a difference and the risk than the plastic lens burn with the UV after sometime 2-3 ears probably, definitely not worth and upgrade.
Great review. Giving me info that if you got g5 you don't need g6. I don't want light that is lighting my eyes. Lenses are too wide. Prefer g5 supply with kessil for better shimmer and colour. Thanks
Jake! Bravo. Camt wait to see the blue comparison. Im torn between them, and planning the upgrade. Would love ur thoughts on the blue, as well, as im currently on g5 blue, but am planning to go g6 pro, i think!
Thanks for the video Jake! I don’t see enough difference to upgrade yet. Although I would like to switch out my xr30 blues for the Pro, but that’s money better spent elsewher
It seems almost like a single XR30 G6 puts out enough PAR over a 4 ft tank for basically everything but the most light hungry corals. Is that valid or am I misunderstanding?
There is more surface agitation on the right side of the tank where the G5 is, so way more shimmer there, but indeed, when both lights later on are single in the middle the G5 has still more shimmer. I think it's because G6 has more spread, is less point-source like than G5.
So Royal Blue is now Royal Purpleish Blue? I don't get this change because the more violets already make your tank more purpleish if you prefer that. Now with these new Royal "Blue" leds i can't replicate the blue color of the G5 anymore if i would want to. Skipping G6.
I don't know if the spread is actually an advantage. I still need 2 as in the video and then I have a free illuminated room because of all the light that shines next to it. No advantage in my view. In terms of color of the LEDs, not at all interesting and adds nothing else. The design is great but whether you have the g5 or 6. You don't have to do it for your coral.
Can I ask what par readings you was getting when running all the blues channels at 100% including UV and violet and all the other channels turned off on the G6 Pro?
too much light spill when you look directly at the light. Unless you have a hood, I wouldn't run the Radion. For an open top aquarium, I like to run my lights high, and definitely don't want to be blinded by the fixture. The Kessil and Orpheks are much better choices.
Yes. Bad idea to put that lenses on the same high as fixture frame. The should mount them deeper into the fixture. Had a G5 but sold them quickly because of noise and that bad light spill.
Are these new g6 radions the way to go for a new 2' cube reef tank setup? Don't have a budget but I would prefer a single fixture solution. Ive watched so many vids and I'm stuck between these, the Neptunes, and ATI fixtures .... got everything but the lights figured out because I don't want to be lighting to ever be a limiting factor to what type of tank setup
100% go for the XR30 not the XR 15. I made the mistake of buying a XR 15 for a my 60 gallon 2 ft x 2 ft x 2 ft cube and the PAR is terrible. 160 MAX at the top of my aquascape 12” into the tank with the G6 XR15 light only 4.5” off the water surface. Most of the tank is 100-110. If you have any desire for SPS, go XR30 right off the bat for a 2 ft cube. I’ve wasted so much money switching out lights it’s nuts. I just ordered a XR30 and ReefBrites because I’m sick of worrying about whether I have enough PAR to grow what I want.
Great video. I’m about to restart my 4 ft x 18 inch Red Sea Reefer 350. What do you recommend for lighting a 4 foot SPS tank with gen 6 lights? Looks like two XR15s?
Only $200 each? I think it's $800 for a full fixture. So maybe power supply and whatever you use to hand it will cost some but... maybe selling off your prior lights will cover some of it. Still most of these new lights can keep any corals the average people will try easily
@@loubert75 forgot the upgrade kits existed. I still don't see a reason to upgrade anyway unless a light dies or you are trying to keep something special and think the gen6 has something that would make a difference
Can you please do a video about "Is it safe to keep a reef tank with kids?"? I just got into the hobby, but I have a young toddler and I am very much worried about palytoxins and other issues. Thanks in advance!
About the same. Hard to assess with the different corals throughout the tank. Especially in TH-cam video. Age of the lights should be the same as well. To most peoples eyes might not be much difference. Hopefully they are more durable as devices advance each generation. One of the bad things with Kessil canisters they die. Also they don’t downward support their controllers and software.
3 XR30s. I have 3 XR30s on my 150 gal 60x25x25 tank. I have them mounted on the ecotech rail. I’d recommend this configuration for good even light coverage.
Eco tech Marine needs a passive cooled 75 watt rail mount with full spectrum blue diodes to compliment the AB+ and mobius controlled! Talk to the engineers now! Let them hear you roar, Xr7’s please!
I don't know.. I have G5s. Not worth the upgrade until fixing Mobius. Go to a true wifi instead of that garbage blue tooth... I use reef beat and the maxspect synagy with no issues at all. Not so much with Mobius.
I'm just curious was the radion g5 pro new as well? I know Leds don't lose a ton of output over time but it can be a measurable variable in this instance, if so.
It's already better man. Ability to change color spectrum during the day, sunrise/sunset, way less heat, no need to change bulbs every year, proven coral growth, what more do you want ffs? 😁
Sold my A360X because the shimmer was too much. I liked it first but it grow old later on. The shimmer of the XR15 G5 is perfect for my eyes (the XR15 has better shimmer than the XR30 because the fixture is smaller).
