A buddy of mine who's former SAS turned me onto this idea. He adds metal weights to the top of the tire to increase load. Before I got a tire I wanted to see if there were any variations on the idea just in case. Thank you!
@@biggaywizard another variation to add weight more easily is to screw in a piece of timber on the inside of the tyre spanning the whole diameter. Then from that you can attach some dowel or pipe to create a "plate stacking" post so they don't fall through or fall off when you're pulling it along.
Great alternative! I also saw Ben Patrick's sledding for the Knees over Toes challenge. The sleds are not portable and they're expensive. This alternative is portable and affordable. I put free weights inside the tire walls for added resistance when close to home. Thanks Fossa! 😊
Clever solution. I do some logging work, so I have slings, carabiners, logging chains and - - - Logs! Yep, chain around the log, sling hooked into the carabiner, hooked to the chain ;) Your solution is good for city dwellers ;)
That's awesome! From what I know about sleds, the idea for them actually came from logging...having to drag the logs out themselves. Made the loggers very strong in movements like deadlifts etc (from what I've read)
I've got a semi truck tire that I will be using. With the eye bolt, I used a larger washer on the inside of the tire to help from pulling out. Thank you for this idea! After researching the sled market and finding how expensive they can be, I knew there had to be a another way to get the same result with what I have on my property. I found your video of a great way to do it. Thank you
You're welcome mate! A lot of the sleds can definitely be overpriced for sure. Glad to hear you found the video helpful and you're going to make one of these sleds! :)
What a clever idea! Sleds arent very avaliable here in NZ, plenty of old tires around im sure! Appreciate the idea :) could easily put a wooden board in or ontop of the tire too with some piping to add more weight. epic!
i cut out few pieces of metal sheet and placed them under my sled sure made alot of difference with the noise level,..yes u have to either weld it on or simple drill some holes and tighten it up nuts and bolts,
@@wiz8914 you would think but honestly compared to the original underneaths rails its really good. Besides ive had mine for a couple years now and i do use my sled every day with heavy weight still going strong. Just get the rite size..i believe mine was 13.
Love it. Was looking at rogue sleds. $350 and up into the thousands. I've got a tire. Could have this made on the cheap and get the same results. Thanks!
I've created a variation that uses some timber attached to the inside of the tyre. Then a pvc pipe coming up off that which the weight plates slide onto. This helps to stop them slipping off if you're running with the sled. If you're planning to do sprints with it, something like this might be the way to go.
You're welcome! Yep, you can add sandbags on top, or just use weight plates. I use Olympic sized plates, that way they don't fall through the tyre. Another alternative is to screw some timber onto the inside of the tyre to stop whatever you put on top from falling through. Hope that helps :)
3Assem morad you’re welcome! I’ve used a slightly smaller car tyre in the video which allows me to sit a weight plate (Olympic sized) on top without falling through. Otherwise, you can screw some timber on the inside to prevent things falling through. Hope that helps.
Azalia Villa absolutely, I used to use rope when I first started making these, the sling just makes it easy to change over quickly to something like the TRX handles.
You're welcome! That might be a little tough to make it even quieter since that's the benefit of using the tyre as opposed to a steel sled. You could potentially put something under the surface of the tyre that will be dragged on the ground. Maybe something like some old carpet would definitely help, but this would also have to be replaced often. Hope this helped!
I've done the tire thing in my neighborhood (I run uphill with it). The first time I did it, a lady three doors away came out to see what was going on. It's loud. I'm going to experiment with attaching weight plates or sandbags onto my four-wheel hand truck (or other rubber-wheeled cart) and attaching a rope to that. Using a weight-lifting belt was good.
Depending on the size of tyre you use and the weight plates you have available, they should just sit on top without falling through. For mine I use Olympic sized plates which are just a little bigger than the inside diameter of the tyre. That way I can stack multiple plates on the sled depending on what I’m doing with it.
$32- free tire! You were right- tire shop said I could take all of them! Weighs 31lbs. Driveway is long and has a slope so it’s kicking my butt with no added weight
dude. im dying trying to follow this. could you please give us some info about the sizes of the bolts and the carabiner? in mm or cm what's the circle, diameter of the ringbolt ?
Have you made yourself one of these?
Thanks for the awesome video to help with people’s fitness :) made one for myself as part of the kneesovertoesguy program
@@aussiespursfan8609 Thanks mate, glad it was helpful for you! Perfect addition to that program :)

I took your advice and made a sled. Here it is in use: th-cam.com/video/3IcctH4Me6w/w-d-xo.html

That's what I use. Add a piece of plywood to add weight like plates or sandbags. I also used a burnt out piece of old fire hose as webbing.
Throw a pair of hex head dunb bells in the tire. They don't jump out.
Good idea
Or bricks 🧱

I put a 35 lb weight on my tire and do tire pull intervals around my neighborhood. I didn't think about the trx workout, good idea for upper body
Awesome stuff mate! The TRX works great on the sled for the upper body! 💪
Awesome idea. Thanks man. Heading to bunnings now. Cheers!
This isn't a squat bro?
Great idea to use the TRX with this.
Thanks! It definitely opens up the training options you can do with it :)

Hey what underneath rails mate? It's just the rubber tire right? So the metal sheet is quieter as opposed to the tire touching the ground?? Cheers

That's right, those sleds do cost quite a bit. Glad this helped you out!
Great idea, pretty hard to push though.
Love it. Been listening to Ben Patrick and, according to him, sleds are king. Thanks for video 8• )
Is there a way to use this for pushing sled work?
Wicked thanks! Great idea
what section of a store is the "sling" from? is it something for towing cars?
I found mine in the section of fasteners & chain blocks if that helps. You could also use a tow strap for it too.
Does this work well for resisted sprints? I’m thinking that the weight on top of the tire would fall off while sprinting…
I've created a variation that uses some timber attached to the inside of the tyre. Then a pvc pipe coming up off that which the weight plates slide onto. thanks man im gunna be doing this
You’re welcome mate!
Great idea!
Can you Sprint with it?
Sure! If you get yourself 2 of the straps, you can then wear them like seatbelts to avoid it slipping down as you run.
My question as well cause doesn’t the strap start to slip down and you want to have arms free when sprinting…
Loctite for them nuts is probably a good idea.
can i use rope instead of the sling?
Azalia Villa absolutely, I used to use rope when I first started making these, the sling just makes it easy to change over quickly to something like the TRX handles.
Thanks a lot for this video!
Does anyone have experience with making it a bit more silent by any chance?
You're welcome! That might be a little tough to make it even quieter since that's the benefit of using the tyre as opposed to a steel sled. You could potentially put something under the surface of the tyre that will be dragged on the ground. I used a 10mm ringbolt and an 11mm carabiner for my sled. If you get them slightly bigger it will also work just as well.
Running faster
Could I had weight on here?
Absolutely, it will depend on the size of the tyre you use, but for most car tyres you can just sit an Olympic sized weight plate right on top.
Why didn't you use a bigger washer? lol
Intros so similar to thenx channels...
nice....fatter washers next time...
The only problem is lifting that weight plate out of the car with a fcked up knee 😂
No one makes enough money to buy everything they want or need. I make 75k...I can't afford a $500 "Presto Gadget Sled".....figure,...most can't.
Does it leave marks on bricks?
I've used it on pavers before and it hasn't left any marks.
