At the end of Howard Webb's toughest weekend since taking up his new role as chief refereeing officer in the Premier League, former official Dermot Gallagher gives his verdict on the big decisions.
INCIDENT: VAR check cleared Marcus Rashford from being offside in the build-up to Bruno Fernandes' equaliser (78) - to the fury of City's players, who protested that the forward had interfered with play.
What is the offside rule in this case?
A player in an offside position at the moment the ball is played or touched by a team-mate is only penalised on becoming involved in active play by:
. interfering with play by playing or touching a ball passed or touched by a team-mate or
. interfering with an opponent by:
. preventing an opponent from playing or being able to play the ball by clearly obstructing the opponent's line of vision or
. challenging an opponent for the ball or
. clearly attempting to play a ball which is close when this action impacts on an opponent or
. making an obvious action which clearly impacts on the ability of an opponent to play the ball
    DERMOT'S VERDICT: Wrong decision, offside.

As a United Fan , I couldn’t believe our luck when the goal stood because I was already saying it is offside before the goal at all. If a goal stood for man city in this manner , I would be really upset so I understand how every city fans feel. We just have to move on Nevertheless. We still gonna see some worse decisions before the end of the season.

I don't understand why there's a debate about this at all. It's a clear offside as Rashford was: running towards the ball, shielding the ball via his running angle, and is affecting the defenders and GK- and I'm a United fan. We have seen so many offsides given for offside players running towards a ball but not touching it, so why is this situation any different?

    • @simonbrooks399
      @simonbrooks399 ปีที่แล้ว +35

Var didn’t get involved with the referrers decision because it’s a subjective offside. This debate isn’t about whether it’s offside or not because we know it is. It’s about why the decision was made and why VAR didn’t get involved

Being offside isn't an offence so even though you've seen them given, the truth is the flag should never go up until the offside player actually touches the ball. We all seen wrong decisions by the linos since VAR. He didn't stop anybody from challenging for the ball and he didn't obscure the keepers view or make an attempt to play the ball. City stopped because they assumed the offside would be given instead of playing to the whistle which is the new rule.

100%. To me that’s one of the major flaws with the offside rule. Any player on the field will garner some type of attention. There is no way you can say that Rashford did not draw the attention of at least Edison, Walker and Akanji. That rule is poorly written and should be addressed asap. Way to subjective and causes too many issues. Offside in my book and I am a United fan.

As a Liverpool fan I agree with this. Salah was interfering with play in an offside position and caused the Wolves defender to decide to head the ball due to the threat. Had Salah not been there he would have left it for the GK or to go out for a goal kick.
Both that and the Rashford goal should have been ruled offside IMHO. If defenders actions/decisions are directly affected by your presence in an offside position leading to a goal then you are interfering with play. Simple.

But is it clearly offside though. Rashford Yes, But Bruno is not. Another way to look at this is that Rashford has the right to make a run to get himself in good position for the next possible phase of play where he is not offside anymore because an onside player has played the ball. Bruno Fernandes can still have his shot saved by the goalkeeper and the ball can bounce back into a space that Rashford has now occupied brilliantly by maintaining his run. Is it still offside even then because Akanji has not kept up with play since Rashford was "offside" initially. Man City players deciding to stop or slow down just because they decide to think the pass is for Rashford and not Fernandes dose not make it OFFSIDE. You (referring to the referee) can't decide to make an assumption that the pass was for Rashford and on that assumption decide that the Man City players also think that the pass is for Rashford therefore Bruno Fenandes goal must be offside. I think this deserved the good old 'black and white' interpretation of the situation which is bruno is onside and he scored from the pass by Casemiro whilst Rashford is trying to get in position for any rebound as a forward player should.

He's keep saying the chances of that happening again is remote but look back over many years and situations have happened similar to this many times. A similar situation happened yesterday in the Spurs/Arsenal derby. The ball was played through to a Spurs player who was offside so he lifted his leg up and let the ball run underneath him and then Son ran on to shoot and only a save by Ramsdale stopped a goal. Nobody even mentioned it, but if Son had scored the goal would have been given. This rule has existed in some form for decades because Brian Clough, when still a manager, said if he isn't interferring with play then why is he on the pitch.

Looking at the way the play developed, Akanji and Walker would never get on time to avoid Bruno's shot. But everyone is forgetting the nuance Guardiola himself introduced in the post-match interview, which was that the high line made by City would never be made if the ball was intended for Bruno. Bruno was well behind, so Akanji/Walker could 've easily run back before the pass was made to Bruno, if that was the case. That in itself is interfering with play. The fact that that pass was intended for Rashford influenced the way City's defence positioned themselves as opposed to what they would've done if it was to Bruno. But if that is debatable, Ederson positioning is not. There's no way he could've known for sure if Rashford was offside, so he had to try to defend him. Offside all day.

    Just ask 2 questions:

    2. How many times have you seen the AR raise their flag, when a player is standing in an offside position and they start to run towards the ball? (Answer - hundreds of times)
Regardless of what the rule states, the standard interpretation is always, as soon as the player moves towards the ball, he is offside. In other words, the AR should have raised his flag immediately and the ref blown for offside before it even developed. That’s the normal practice. End of!
