hey scotty. am thinking of buying a used 2013 ford escpae sel AWL drive or a used 2008 or 2010 jeep cherokee laredo 4wd. whihc do you think i should go with?
I had a 2005 Scion xB for several years, it was ugly to look at, but provided superb gas mileage, reliability and visibility was incredible. When I was ready to move on, my mechanic bought it from me and still drives it today, 5 years later!

Thats always the case. Every HHR I have seen was owned by an old person for that reason. Every young person i know who had one only had it because their grandparents gave it to them once they moved on to a real SUV
Yeah. They were trying to capitalize on that Fast and Furious import scene, not realizing that was just a fad, and that young people had no money for brand new cars. I only saw the elderly drive them. The few people who would enter them into car shows, still were elderly.
I have a 2007 Scion tC with over $150,000 miles I bought it with 4 miles on it in 2007. It’s the first car I ever bought so let me tell ya, in the beginning I did not treat it well. I forgot oil changes all the time and wouldn’t check fluids for months and one time I was jobless and went a year without looking under the hood even once. My car is STILL like new sitting in my drive way right now. Never had not even one problem with the car. Best purchase I’ve ever made!
I don't know how accurate Edmunds total cost of ownership calculator is, but by my math $150k in miles is 351,562 miles if you drive the typical 15k miles per year. Impressive. Certainly believable for a Scion/Toyota, but even for them that's very impressive. You must drive carefully, and not have missed any maintenance intervals by even a single mile. Most cars can go to 200k miles, people like Toyotas because they have a good chance of making it to 200k miles even if you ignore all maintenance except (belated) oil changes and treat them like crap. If you actually take care of them, which probably 80% of owners don't and almost all 3rd and 4th owners past 200k miles don't, the sky's the limit. I'd personally never buy a used Toyota without detailed service records, though. If all I want is 200k miles, there are a lot of other brands I could buy and save money, since I treat my cars well. When I pay the Toyota tax, I'd better be getting a car that I can make last virtually forever, not one that's already in the last half of its life due to 100k+ miles of someone else's abuse and neglect. That they bought *because* it could take their abuse.
Hello Scotty! I have a 2011 Scion XB and let me tell you, it has been the best car ever! It currently has 340,000 original miles (bought it brand new), have never had a problem with it. The way it’s going, I think it’ll top 500,000 miles for sure!
I have the same Scion XB, I bought new in 2009 it has 111,111 miles last time I looked. It has nothing wrong with it has been the best car I’ve ever owned. Never had a single problem with it.
Ordered my 05 scion xb brand new from Japan in 04 for 15k .. i was 22yrs old then.. now I'm 38. I got 243,000 miles on it now. Still runs like new and I been driving it 80miles a day mon-thurs for past 3 years. Wish I could order another. one.
@Noah Vale No you cant. only the Scion frs was rebadged as the Toyota 86 that I'm aware of. The XB has always been Toyota. It was Toyota BB in Japan before it moved to U.S. and rebranded Scion XB. The first generation XB's are the best and were only available 3 yrs in U.S. Mine Is a manual 4cylinder. I ordered it from Toyota when they became available on the east coast back in 2004. You can not buy a new Toyota XB. An if you could it wouldn't be caparable to the first gen Xb cause they dont make cars that are simple with everything you need and none of the junk you don't anymore. Love my Xb.
_"It's barely broken in..."_ Scotty's totally right. I once drove a 2009 Scion xB that was owned by a courier company. I was impressed by how eager and zippy it was; it drove like a brand new car! I was shocked when I looked at the odometer and saw it had *278,900 MILES!* It was being driven 7 days a week, 8+ hours a day. Damn great cars.👍
I used to work at a Toyota dealership. The (not so much of a) joke was that, with Toyota vehicles, once you've got them to 100K miles, you've just broken them in!
I had a 2006 XB & it's definitely the best bargain in vehicles! Super dependable, zippy with amazing space & legroom inside. 32 hwy mpg. My brother said it feels like driving in a kitchen chair attached to a go-kart, which translates to fun! Lol A friend of mine owns it now.
I just bought one with 80k and I can’t believe how smooth it rides for an 11 year old car. I love it so far. Clutch is super smooth and shifts like a dream
Just worked on a 08 Toyota Corolla with 630,000 miles on it. Had to do a double take and get a second opinion when I glanced at the odometer. Looking at it and driving it you couldn't tell. Talked to the customer, original owner, he took good care of his car and it showed. This goes for most other vehicles, you take care of them and they take care of you.
You’re awesome Scotty! My 2011 Scion xD is on 300,000 miles and still going strong. I have constantly used it for work deliveries and all those miles are mine!
@@epsorks you should go to vegas with that kind of luck. 08 Colorado, before even 90k miles timing belt broke and abs system broke. Chevy HHR that my parents had blown head gasket before 100k. Now my moms Silverado hasnt been so bad, but its at 120k and its starting to have issues. Never going to GM ever again i wont make that same mistake hahaha
That's most likely because the maintenance were procrastinated to long and it feel apart my dad has an 03 Monte Carlo ss with over 300,000 miles on it daily drives never really had issues with it transaxle is still strong and engine runs like it's brand new
I sold a crap ton of these XB as a salesmen. The guts of a Camry for a lot less. They thought kids would buy them and they did but I sold more of these to older people. They are incredibly easy to get in and out of so folks with back problems, bad knees, and bad hips love them. The kicker is that these were available with a five speed manual which was so much cheaper. People on a budget and that like manuals bought the hell out of them. We were always backordered on these cars.
2008 Scion tC manual owner here 345k miles mostly highways , replace clutch at 175k 😂 had to .. started leaking oil at 200k got that fixed , oil changed n brake pads that's about it .. best car I've ever own.. made in Japan hell yeah .. too bad they killed the brand ..
@@tonygibbons5 well if its for a good price get it , look out for the general make sure everything works other than that these car dont have any specific problems the 06 is older model the newer ones start at 08 but 06 is not that bad it will last you thats for sure
I have a 2011 Toyota Scion xB just finally hit 100,000 last week. I normally get tired of my cars after a year or so but i've had this bad boy for 10 years & still love looking @ it & driving it every single day. ♥️
I bought a used 2006 Xb back in 2008/2009 and it’s still my primary driver. No major issues yet. I’ve had a Ford F-150 and a brand new Lexus IS-350 in that time span, both of which have come and gone, and the Xb is still standing. Rock solid and very practical car at 197K miles on it.
Thank you Scotty... you really fill a void in me that my father left. And teaching me about more than just repair work, but the landscape of auto manufacturing as a whole.
This Killmer guy gave me a headache after 1 minute. I tried watching longer to get info on the Scion, but it wasn't worth it... I bailed out, even if it was from a 10th floor window.
@@mannyortiz1887 that’s better for the rest of us car guys who ACTUALLY love this car guy. Hope you didn’t mess the sidewalk up TOO bad with your WORTH- LESS remains. Put your remains out with the trash & hose off the sidewalk.😳😬.
2010 Scion xD. Reccomended by Consumer Reports. By 2013, when lease ended, record showed NO defects or complaints reported, and only two very minor recall issues. Mine lasted nearly 301000 miles.
@Deplorable That was only an issue in the 2007 - 09 models and it afdected to most all of the 4 cylinder engines of that time period (Camry, Corolla, Rav 4, etc).
2005 Scion XB here, over 275,000 miles on it. Just did a throttle clean and new spark plugs yesterday and she still runs like new. Glad they are not too complicated to work on. 🙂
I can attest to the superb design of the Scion Xb , I have a 2015 and its thee BEST vehicle I have ever owned and I've had mercedes and BMW's which suck in comparison to this vehicle .. I think I'll start loooking for a second one just for the hell of it .. Scotty Is absolutely right on this one ..
My 2005 Scion TC got about 288k on it now and still run like new car.. I changed Catalytic converter once and that’s the only major job I’ve done to it. It’s a great car gas saver for sure
Mine is 2004 xb with 233,000 on it. I have changed the cat too. Drive it 2 hours every day. Gas saver like no other. It depends on who is driving the car.
I have an 06 XB. I literally drove over 600 miles with a bad spark plug (drove from vegas to LA) The damn thing is beyond reliable. I bought it with 70k mikes. I have over 160k mikes now and still running strong. Other than regular maintenance with quality oil and changing out your shocks and fluids on time. The thing will just drive. It’s a great daily driver and tall people friendly.
ROBERTO OROZCO I have an 06 tc. Got middle of last year, and what do ya know the engine blew up (one of the throw/crank bearings went bad, then fell into the crankshaft gears, big mess). It died beginning of summer break for me, so my dad, my best friend and I spent like 3 weeks and some change putting a used engine in it. Our bad for buying it, but stuff happens and best learning experience I’ve had. Our cars have been Toyota’s tho and never had any problems with them other than this fluke (which was a blessing in disguise).
05 xb, the plastic prop rod holdrr thing broke, so i just set it in there (my fault)the prop rod came loose while driving and pierced the radiator and broke all the fan blades off (which I didnt realize) drove it another 100 miles on the highway to get to the shop essentially with no coolent. They tested the motor, no harm done, new radiator and fan installed and I was back in business. Probably needed that service anyways. 150k miles. Btw, that prop holder is like 6 bucks on ebay if yours breaks. I also replaced the plastic dips tick with a Toyota oem metal dipstick from ebay.
Bought a one year old used 04 xB, still have it 17 years later. No problems and is the best car I've ever owned. The way things are going it will outlive me.
I love you Scottie, and I’ll you what, I love my 2009 xB, got killer deal CPO, special release 6.0 and they extended my power train to 120,000 miles and got a new transmission for $50 deductible. This is by the far my favorite car I’ve owned and I’m driving it until the wheels fall off. Amazing car!! ❤️😊❤️
Got an 05 tC with 150,000. Bought it salvaged from copart for 1800$ with 100,000 miles. Aside from some minor body damage it had that I’ve already fixed, she’s a damn tank, I’ve put a total of 400$ in it since owning it 3 years 50k miles later
I have 2009 Scion XB. Bought it brand new at the end of '08. Still have it. Still running. Still purring like a kitten. Love my baby. Best car I ever had. I also have a Toyota Rav 4. Love it too but nothing is better than my Scion. ❤
I just bought a 2015 XB. It’s the largest compact car you can get for passengers and cargo. It’s almost like having a full sized vehicle inside but a small car outside. Sure it’s boxy and has little luxury and it almost feels like a car from the 1980s. But it’s comfortable, drives well and gets me from point A to point B with lots of space. It’s a win win.
They probably had a GM or Chrysler-Fiat before, then had problems, Scotty looked at the car, and the neighbor realized they had a money pit and bought a 4Runner. Plus, Scotty's always out in his driveway yelling about cars to a camera, it's probably hard not to be influenced by him!
Once they cut the brand their price used dropped like a stone. I picked up a 2014 Scion iQ with 50k on it in 2018 for $7k flat and over the last year and 4 months (44k miles later) it has been an absolutely wonderful car for my daily drives and cross country trips.
We own 2 first gen XBs (2005 - 50K miles; 2006 - 110K miles). Great little cars - 30mpg @ 70; Holds over 30 cases of beer and two adults with winter coats! Can't go wrong with these.
My brother gave me a used 2005 Scion XB back in 2013. Six year and 224,573 miles in it and still running great with the original factory engine, transmission, etc.
I had a 2006 xB, and it just ran and ran with no issues. Passed it on to a family member who is still using it reliably. Lots of room and easy to get in and out of.
Thank you so much Scotty for answering my questions about the Scion XB cars. My husband and I appreciate it so much that you share this knowledge with us.
It's a shame that Toyota didn't carry the XB over when they phased out the Scion brand. The styling on the '07-'15 is timeless. And the powertrain is very well proven. Guaranteed to command top dollar.
I got a 2013 scion xb and let me tell ya it's great on gas my car has 50,000 miles on it and still looks and drives like new it was a good investment and I still have it today!
As the proud owner of a 2016 Scion iM with a 6-speed manual, I'm happy with my car. My car is basically a European model Toyota Corolla hatchback. The engine is not so fast, but having a manual transmission makes it fun. And it's got an independent rear suspension. Of course, as a Toyota, especially with a manual transmission, it should last me forever.
Certain years had oil burning problems (from what I've experienced) like clogging oil passages or piston oil ring issues. I have grown pretty fond of these little engines and they seem to go forever if you maintain them properly.
My understanding of the scion brand from a scion sales friend I had was that it was a proof of concept. It was sort of like Saturn back in the 90s and also seeing how the no haggle pricing would work on a new car. They were, as an entire brand, the only brand at the time who said this is the price take it or leave it.
I was a 19 year old kid once and I Loved Toyota I remember always liking scion but I was scared it wouldn’t last as long as a Toyota lol I had no idea it was a Toyota
I just replaced my 2016 Ford Focus with a 2008 Xb. I couldn’t be happier! 6’4” people can drive the Xb but 6’0” people hit heads butts knees and elbows getting in the stupid Focus plus have scant storage
Finally! I thought you would never make this video. I own this car older model 2006 Scion xB 215k miles. Runs like a top The 2008 and newer all have oil consumption issues. You gotta watch your oil everyday. That's why they're so cheap now
Sucks for them! They probably just have to change the oil filter every 3 months lol. I have the first gen as well an 04 and don’t have any oil burning issues neither
Zeus Medrano I use to own a 2011 and I had it for four years every 5000 mile to change the oil. No issues. And at that time, it had a 172k miles. Now I switch to a brand new 2015 xB at that time and 5 years later, it’s got 50k+ miles and no issues at all
I have a 2008 XB. I bought it new and I'm still driving it. It is reliable, roomy, nice ride, decent gas mileage, and the visibility is excellent. It is a great vehicle. I wish they still made them because I would buy another.
I bought a 2006 xB to replace my old Ford Escape towards the end of last year, and I love it! Only maintenance I've had to do on it was replace some old parts, oil changes, and an oxygen sensor. Hopefully I can keep it forever!
He's right. For almost any Toyota (a dependable vehicle anyway, especially if it is all-Japanese like the xB's), 100K miles IS just breaking it in... I know of a person who owned one of the old Toyota Hilux pickups (the indestructible mini-pickups called "Truck" or "Pickup" in America, and was the same platform the 4Runners used to be built upon) with a 22R-model engine (2.4L I4, but not the same model as in these cars) that had literally gone 1 MILLION MILES with regular and periodic maintenance. I used to own one - keep fluids and filters changed, replace spark plugs & wires when necessary, and the timing chain & guides every 125-150K miles, and they ran forever!
I bought a brand new scion TC in 2012. It is an absolute gem. It’s quick. Great on gas the hatchback is awesome. And it was only like 22 grand brand new. It’s been paid off for years. What an absolute gem. I haven’t had the smallest problem with anything
I have an 08 xB and I just love it. It's my first car, and i think it's just perfect. It's reliable, got plenty of space, and i got the gold one with the spoiler and sunroof, so it's got some knick knacks too. Dirt cheap too, I bought it from an old woman for $5000 with only 50k miles on it. 10/10 would buy again
When I lived in Okinawa the Toyota BB (Scion XB stateside) was the best car to get. The roads are incredibly tiny so the BB was actually quite large, but you could fit 5 full size Marines in them without any issues, and all their crap in the back. If you had a family and drove around a lot of the single guys as part of a church group, it was the best option.
Scotty I bought a 2008 xd and have put 160k miles on it with a big smile 😊. I have saved THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS. Oh I used the money to buy silver and Gold 🥇🥳 oh I can put over a half ton of wood pellets in it, lawnmowers,5 people. I still have it too 🎰💰💵💵💵💵💵 Thanks SCION !
I have 4 05-07's xb's we use for deliveries. All over 400k miles now, one over 560k still running strong. Only needed a couple alternators and starters along the way.
I'm 57 and love the Scion xB, it's the only car I can get in and out of without throwing my back out. Toyota would have had better success marketing the xB to old guys.
I currently have a 2009 Scion XB with 237,273 miles on it. I've never had a major mechanical problem with this car. The only thing that I've had to replace were three coils over the past 12 yrs. That car starts every day with absolutely no problem. I hit the highway for 1500 mile round trip road trips back to Florida several times per year. These are super reliable cars.
185,000 miles on my 05 xB and its still runs great, super reliable, cheap and easy to maintain, only replacements its needed in its life were a starter, breaks and a couple batteries! Thats a combined 350 bucks in maintenance over 185,000 miles
I just replaced the original clutch on my 2004 xB at 300,000 miles! Still runs like new still getting 32 mpg!! (Original owner) The only car that I've ordered without driving. I liked the Toyota BB when I was in Japan for work and loved them. NOBODY has ever touched my car but me. I've spent about $600 in parts in all these years. I've spent more on tires as my daily driver (112 miles per day)

Love my Xb.
Yeah my first bran new car ever was a 05 xb. RIP when a full size Blazer tboaned it at 50mph. No injuries but totaled the box..took it like a champ.
@Noah Vale please link me to the 2020 toyota xb hahahahahahahaha
_"It's barely broken in..."_ Scotty's totally right.
I once drove a 2009 Scion xB that was owned by a courier company. I was impressed by how eager and zippy it was; it drove like a brand new car! I was shocked when I looked at the odometer and saw it had *278,900 MILES!* It was being driven 7 days a week, 8+ hours a day. Damn great cars.👍
Hi
I used to work at a Toyota dealership. The (not so much of a) joke was that, with Toyota vehicles, once you've got them to 100K miles, you've just broken them in!
Could go for a million miles...!
I had a 2006 XB & it's definitely the best bargain in vehicles! Super dependable, zippy with amazing space & legroom inside. 32 hwy mpg. My brother said it feels like driving in a kitchen chair attached to a go-kart, which translates to fun! Lol
A friend of mine owns it now.
"Its got 99,000 miles. Its barely broken in."
From my personal experiences with GM, 99,000 miles would mean that it is ALREADY broken hahaha
05 Impala LS 300k miles OE transmission and engine. However mine was made in Canada

Bought one brand new in 2011. Nothing has ever broken in 150,000 miles
I’m not sure why an old guy yelling at me about Scions showed up on my suggested videos.. but I’m glad it did
I sold a crap ton of these XB as a salesmen.
The loved my Scion Tc. Had over 200,000 miles & ran absolutely amazing.
That's barley breaking in the engine 😁

I was one of those youngsters that flocked to Scion when they first came out. I still miss my XB.
Owner 2011 Scion TC - Love my car, super reliable and just zippy enough to not be a bore to drive. I bought it w/a manual trans for extra reliability.
15 minutes after this video, Scion vehicle resale values have skyrocketed

2010 Scion xD. Reccomended by Consumer Reports. By 2013, when lease ended, record showed NO defects or complaints reported, and only two very minor recall issues.
Mine lasted nearly 301000 miles.
@Deplorable
That was only an issue in the 2007 - 09 models and it afdected to most all of the 4 cylinder engines of that time period (Camry, Corolla, Rav 4, etc).
Amazing
Thats the XB 2.4 not XD with 1.8. Only some XBs had the oil consumption issues and Toyota took care of it for owners.

❤️ my 15 Manual
Mine 2008 xB now has 199k miles got it since new and still rolling like a champ. I love the reliability on this vehicle.
Same here bro
Awesome bro I got the same model with 350,000 miles on it still running and daily driver
Beyond reliable? I think that's called Magic.
70k Mikes, now 160k Mikes? That's a lot of guys named Mike :) (joking on your little misspelling)
Your neighbor is smart! They have a Toyota 4Runner!
Where ?
They probably had a GM or Chrysler-Fiat before, then had problems, Scotty looked at the car, and the neighbor realized they had a money pit and bought a 4Runner. Plus, Scotty's always out in his driveway yelling about cars to a camera, it's probably hard not to be influenced by him!
Richard Lopez right across his street. See the silver?
The Price of Scions just went up ..
Yup. And I want one now. My brother wanted one too but could only find the Nissan cube. What a turd haha
Once they cut the brand their price used dropped like a stone. I picked up a 2014 Scion iQ with 50k on it in 2018 for $7k flat and over the last year and 4 months (44k miles later) it has been an absolutely wonderful car for my daily drives and cross country trips.

And here I was thinking that the Scion was a piece of Junk? Guess you learn something new every day. Thanks, Scotty
I bought one used at 30K has 140K with no maintenance other than oil changes.
Great little cars. I would love to drive one in standard
I owned 2. Best cars I ever had!
Certain years had oil burning problems (from what I've experienced) like clogging oil passages or piston oil ring issues. I have grown pretty fond of these little engines and they seem to go forever if you maintain them properly.
That's why suggested to go with 2011 and later, which also received telescoping steering
I just bought a 2009 Scion xB 116,000 miles in excellent condition for 6,000 dollars and I have no car payments 😀

My understanding of the scion brand from a scion sales friend I had was that it was a proof of concept. It was sort of like Saturn back in the 90s and also seeing how the no haggle pricing would work on a new car. They were, as an entire brand, the only brand at the time who said this is the price take it or leave it.

The 2008 and newer all have oil consumption issues. You gotta watch your oil everyday. That's why they're so cheap now
Jamison H yup true that! Just means you’ll have fresh oil always in your engine if you have to keep filling it lol
The problem was that Scion was marketed to 18-35 years, but older people were buying them. It can be very risque to create a new brand
Risqué means "Suggestive of sexual impropriety; bordering on the indelicate". Is that really what you meant to say?

"It's got only 99,000 miles on it, it's barely broken in."
Nice cars, if I can get a deal on one I might go for it.
If it was a Mercedes or Chrysler it would be a miracle. But for Asian cars or some Fords it's new.
Only with Toyota lol
SHHHH!

When I lived in Okinawa the Toyota BB (Scion XB stateside) was the best car to get. The roads are incredibly tiny so the BB was actually quite large, but you could fit 5 full size Marines in them without any issues, and all their crap in the back.
