Im the original owner of a 2005 Scion TC, I still have it and used it everyday. Never an issue, regular maintenance every 5k miles. I love mine 17 year old car. His been with me through high school, university and now. Everyone at work have nice cars specially Teslas ( I work for a tech company) everyone always ask me “when are you changing your car?” When it dies I say or when the repair is too expensive. But so far the car is been great to me.
Believe it or not this car is really great and very reliable. In my 2 years of owning a Scion TC before it was totaled this past summer I’ve only spent less then $400 in maintenance (with out gas and oil changes) and only drove it for 18,000 miles. If you take care of this car it will take you anywhere and back.
Scion TC is a super underrated car! Being reliable is an understatement, mine had 231,500 miles when I sold it and never had any issues. Dirt cheap with a plethora of options for modification, can’t beat that. 😎
@Jim Gesselle eloquently explained my good man. I have to say I prefer to buy Toyota's made from Japan. Always respected their quality controls in that country. I miss my Toyota Matrix that was built in Canada. That vehicle was 20000 km short of hitting 400,000 km in 2018 lol.
I got one of these for my daughter when she was a sophomore in high school. A 2007 with 130,000 miles on it. I taught her how to do all the basics. And she’s been checking, refilling and changing her own oil since she was 16. It’s now got almost 250,000 on it and never wrecked. I’m thinking about getting it back from her since she’s bought her new one and doing a little rebuild restoration project with it. 🤷🏻♂️ It’s something to do through the winter. Hell I might even slap a turbo kit on it. Bump that little 160 🐎 up to around 300.
I have a 2010 tC with 192k miles on it. Still runs great. Recently had to fix the suspension and alternator but other than that it's an amazing little car. Cold AC, transmission shifts smoothly, great handling. Couldn't be happier.
@@kad3e3 It's a testimony of Toyota reliability. My wife's 2005 Corolla S has 207K miles. Turns right on, typical Toyota, and it still has the factory Air Conditioning system that blows ice cold.
bought my tc in 2004. Still have it today in 2024. Only issue I had was leaky master clutch cylinder. Replaced it myself for under $30 after 15 years of use and still running without issues today. Standard maintenance only. Wonderful vehicle. Only bad thing, the paint is peeling from sitting outside in the hot summer sun.
I own 2 of these . A 2005 Tc w automatic and a 2007 Tc with the 5 speed . One thing to watch for if your buying one in the Rust Belt is a rusted out Subframe under the motor . A local shop just replaced one here and its about $1,200 job . Its also common in other early Scions.
I own a 2008 scion TC. I have been driving for 22 years and I can tell you I love this car. It’s reliable, fun to drive, and cheap. Funny thing yes Mine is burning oil but I just stay on top of it. Great video Scotty.
I currently have 210K Miles on my 06 Xb. Changed my oil/filter with synthetic every 3,500mi. Change, not flush Auto Tranny fluid/filter every 15k miles. Change, not flush Coolant every 365days. Changed Iridium spark plugs every 30k miles. Bleed brakes every 2 x brake pad and rotor change. Changed the Water pump at 201k because it didn't cross my mind as a regular service item or id change it at 100k. No issues before I changed it. A mechanic mentioned it which is why it didnt cross my mind before. Got into one front end accident where the intake manifold broke. No engine damage. no seals changed. Just radiator, AC parts and front end assembly damage. Car still drives like it does brand new, no leaks or any minor problems. There has been zero hiccups with it since I first purchased it. Its going to be difficult to find a replacement when or if the time comes.
I have a 2007 scion TC and it’s a great car. I think the TC was a great car when it came out and it continued to be a great car. it was a mix of sporty and economical I feel like Toyota should come out with the TC and just call it a Toyota TC I can see people buying the car not caring if it was the youth group or adults
I'm the original owner of a 2007 scion tc with 178k miles. I put an new alternator in it at and plugs at 112k miles, and I just had to replace the water pump and did the serpentine belt while I was in there. The old belt was still in decent shape, no cracks or tears. The only downside is having to check the oil like crazy. I don't think I'll ever own anything other than a Toyota after having this car.
@@jeremiah4810 Its usually the rings in Scion Tc s built from 2007-2009 . But try changing the PCV valve and see if that helps . It only costs about $8.00 at Toyota and it takes 5 minutes to do .
My Scion tC has 214k miles. Bought it for 3500 at 140k. Has over heated but it was my fault and my little brother ran it without oil for a week (he doesn’t know anything about cars). But with all that happening it’s still running strong! No regrets at all. I’ve never red line it or raced it. One of my favorite cheap cars
When it overheated, was it a head gasket issue by chance? I have an 07 that had a water pump go bad on awhile ago and now that it's running again it keeps trying to overheat.
College? I learned manual when I was 8. My first car is a manual. I got a 1959 Morris 1000 that I bought as a restoration project. I can't even get my license for another 2 years
As long as you make sure those Scions don't have the low profile tires on them; they really affect the car's handling. I owned a rebuilt 2008 Scion TC. Two different teenagers had put it in a ditch before I bought it. Scions also have a very high Deaths per Million rate. Mine still ran like a top when I sold it at 168,000 miles for $1475 two years ago.
Lol Love it!! I had Toyota Rebuild mine with the correct size seals before I had any issues. They sent out a warranty extension /oil test letter. My 2009 Scion XB failed the test and I had an over 1k engine job done for $0.00
"They made a car that would appeal to the youngsters... " Scotty: * like the celica* We knew Scotty had to throw the celica in there Always early for a Scotty video 😁
My dad beat the heck out of a 2010 toyota corolla s for pizza delivery and put 220k miles on it, only changed basic stuff for that mileage and the transmission eventually. They are honestly great cars for anybody who wants to work in delivery or for teens.
easy issue with the first gen scion TC a lot of people's first car and don't take good care of it on a month to month basis. That being said if you research the common problems and keep an eye out for those symptoms and give it good maintenance without abusing the engine. The car should be just as reliable as any other toyota.
I wonder if Scotty knows that the Scion is one of the first "cheaper" cars to have a USB port standard, which is why they advertised them at music stores. Back when MP3 file was the best thing ever.
not only usb ports but first cheap car to offer so many things that only high end cars offered, such at the panoramic sunroof, automatic up/down on both driver/passenger, 17" alloy rims stock, pioneer head unit, etc
Hey, nice idea but living in Canada I don't think they would let me in at 62. The USA is very touchy about UK and Canadian citizens. But they are not too bad here. 2 year inspections now and it is not too stiff.
First car I ever bough, 2006 tC, With 160k miles, 210K now, never had any issues other than the battery that had to be replaced, easy to do oil changes, I always check it for air oil level, and detailed it myself to look in more pristine condition, bough parts from the junk yard to replace worn out ones and its been a really reliable car. been wanting to turbo it but I'm not so sure.
I have a first gen '06 xB with the Yaris 1.5 in it. I absolutely love this vehicle. Knock on wood, it's never let me down. 150k and still a fun, little go cart!
My 08 tc with a trd muffler and k&n filter, still running great at 191k miles! just replaced my headlamps! my stepdad watches you and loves you scotty, keep it up
Mine has a a 2012, six speed standard and bought it at an auction for 10K. It had 1,000 miles (now has 15k). Drivers like a dream! Even the factory stereo is awesome! I’m using a 2016 engine and making it turbocharged and Inter cooler
I’m considering buying a 2006 Scion tC tomorrow for my little brother as a birthday present. It’s got 193k miles so I’m on the fence but it seems like it’s been well cared for.
Had a 5 speed manual new in 06. Just a few gripes with it. Wish it had a 6 speed manual. That glass top was hotter than hell in Texas summers. I didn’t think it handled particularly great. It was just decent. But reliable as hell, it was indeed
Everyone says "don't buy a brand new car", but I didn't care. I wanted a brand new car one time in my life. Ordered my 2005 tc from the Toyota website and 6 weeks later, picked it up at the dealer. Still driving it now. Thought I would keep it for 10 years, but it kept going nice and decided to see about 20 years. I did have to replace the front end frame assy (I live in upstate NY with the rough winters, salty roads, etc), which was $1500. The original battery worked for 14 YEARS lol. Replaced the full exhaust system with an aftermarket model about 5 years ago, and now have to do it again. And had to have the driver side front CV joint/axle assy replaced. The driver side hood hinge needs to be replaced. And the rubber gaskets inside the windows need to be replaced. Have gone thru about 5 gas caps. All in all, those replacement parts are still cheaper than buying another vehicle. Yeah dents dings scratches. But it's still going. 👍
Just bought a 2008 Scion due to this video and the comments a little over a week ago. I’m 24 yrs old and I love this little car so far. It’s got 210k on the dash but engine still runs amazing and shifts just fine. I appreciate the content it will really help you from getting pooped on the fb marketplace
I had a 2007 TC and I love it so I bought a 2014 TC and I love this one too! I’ve got 240k miles on my 2014 and I just recently changed out the clutch. Which is pretty amazing. 02 sensor is happening today but all in all I have had zero issues with either of my TCs
I bought a 2005 TC loaded and the onlybsissues was the headliner rattled and the A/C started stinking constantly in Georgia weather. Never an engine oil usage problem.
Love the ScionTC. I was the right demographic when Scion was launched. I bought the new 2005 ScionTC over the 2005 Toyota Corolla XRS. After 18 years and 270+k miles later the oil burning was so bad I traded it in for a 2016 ScionTC with 46k miles.
I have a 2007 scion tc I bought for $6,000. It’s such a reliable car that it drove me 15,000 miles with a shot connecting rod due to the previous owner not changing oil. I’m actually getting my whole engine swapped right now as I write this. My baby will be good as new soon and I’ll be back to driving her! Literally best car ever! Side note: you can also camp in the scion tc. When I go on camping trips I just put the back seats down and I get a foam mattress topper and blankets and pillows and you literally have a queen size bed that can fit 2 comfortably. Also great for drive in theaters if you make a bed in the back and open the trunk since it’s a hatchback…. Also cool for the beach you can do the same thing and enjoy the view of the beach from the bed of your trunk. SUPER COOL!!
Yess my bf has a 2009 tc, he blew the motor on the highway by ragdolling it. He constantly had to put more oil in it as it burnt up quickly. Cost him 5k for a new motor, it’s a camry motor and now no issues runs smooth
So did I! I bought a 2007 Scion tc 5 speed in white and i love it! Drives and looks like a new car and it has 207000 miles on mine. Got it for 2 grand.
I'd say most vehicles are "fixable". The question is how much do you want to put into a vehicle to keep it running. IMO unless it's a classic or something rare (or just something that would otherwise appreciate in value if it was fixed),then fix it. But if it's more than 1/3 or 1/2 the value of the vehicle, forget it. For most vehicles, it's not worth it to spend half the value of the vehicle to fix or replace a motor, unless the car has some meaningful value to you (like it was a family heirloom or passed down through generations). I've gotten in the habit of checking my oil every month on even brand new cars, and in reality, I check it every time I fill up. I mean it takes about 5 seconds to pop the hood and check it, but it can save you a lot of headaches and money later on if you can keep up on it (especially if it has a leak or burns it). I would say that's probably one of the top reasons people's engines fail--they don't check check the oil and change it regularly). Or some people just wait until a light comes on and then check it. IMO by that time, if you've lost 1/2 quart or more of oil, you've already done a fair amount of damage to your engine probably.
wrong, paying to repair a car will always be better than buying a new car that is 30% overpriced with a high APR these days near the 10% range... new cars are horrible deals these days even the cheap crappy Kias are 25k now lol
Definitely fixable but made me wish I never bought one when I had to replace the clutch master cylinder on mine. PITA to get under the dash just to take it out and it's hiding in a tight corner in the engine bay. True statement about easy to learn manual in this car. Taught my mom how to drive it in 2 minutes and she swore up and down that she never would learn how to drive manual because her first experience was in a 70s Chevy. My tire pressure monitor was doing the same thing. Unless it's truly out you can reset it by holding down the button hidden in the passenger glove box for about 10 seconds and the light should go off. I bought my 06 tC with 40k miles on it back in 2018 and it's clean inside and out.
i have a 2008 TRD in near perfect condition. i wrecked it into a curb at like 90 mph and we had it in driving condition the next day and its in perfect condition now. also a 5spd manual
Just had my 2012 scion iQ totaled by a uninsured unlicensed driver. Basically the "econobox" car scotty mentions lol. Such a good reliable cheap fun to drive car. They are definitely great cars for the money and i am missing mine everyday 😭
I love my tc. Worst part about it is the clutch system they didn't make the master cylinder to be able to adjust to the pedal.. well I welded a longer bar onto the clutch pedal and no more going through clutches for me.
Just bought my 06 for 2700. 175 on the motor. Big rims, rolled fenders, race clutch, dropped, tint, purring good so far. Take care of them, they'll take care of you
Time to change the outro video out with one of the celica at your new place with a TN tag on it. Also, I'm in SC and might have to ride up to Nashville sometime and see if i can spy a scotty out and about.
i put it in about a week ago and now it smokes and i have been driving it but just about 10 minutes from home to work and back home. I just just about a cup if that. It was less than half full of fluid in the container. So I didn’t put much at all.
I found a 2005 Scion tC with 180,000 miles. Guy wants $2500 but it’s negociable. The transmission was worked on, the oil in the dip stick is kinda high and dark, so it had been driven recently. the breaks look good, engine is clean, no oil leaks, shocks might be pretty worn tho. It had an aftermarket exhaust pipe and some scratches, dents, and a cracked front bumper. An interested in it since am a senior in highscool and wanna get a beater for a first car. Gonna test drive it and see how is the motor and transmission and if it is, might be my first car!
2000 dollars I wish here in California car prices are ridiculously high and not to mention they are all beat to hell over 200000 miles and they still want a ton of money I don't know how they are coming up with those numbers they are crazy
@@kenmtb I know there's people out there that will pay that kind of money but not me I'd rather invest in something else that's actually worth investing like my house where I'm going to live .to pay for a car especially that high it makes no sense to me you can't live in a car but hey there's a little bit of everything out there like I said there's people that do fall for those kinda things getting ripped off not cool

All I remember about Scion is I had a friend who had fried her transmission at around 120k. Unfortunately she still (for some reason) owed about $8,000 on the car even after having it for something like 4 years.... The one thing I did find out about many of those car painting places that say they'll paint your car for like $300. Yes some of them might, but in my experience, the car can't have any rust, it can't have any body damage and the paint can't be actually chipping off and/or if the paint is worn down to the primer, they may opt NOT to paint the car or they won't warrant the work at all. The only people I could see that would then be able to get a paint job from one of those place is perhaps a car that is a bit faded or perhaps has small scratches in the surface of the paint that don't go down to the primer or beyond the paint layer. And again, if the car has any rust on it, forget about it.
My sister was forcing me to buy a 2011 corolla le for $19,455 I did a test drive and didn’t like it! But I saw a white tc that was $2,000 cheaper that has better wheels fog lights and spoiler and the roof is something I super love of this car ! And drove it and I bought it! Today it has 129k miles and I replaced battery and brakes and that’s it!! Love my tc

We would still have Scions today if they sold them at Toyota dealers.
Uh they did
@Jim Gesselle eloquently explained my good man. I have to say I prefer to buy Toyota's made from Japan. Always respected their quality controls in that country. I miss my Toyota Matrix that was built in Canada. That vehicle was 20000 km short of hitting 400,000 km in 2018 lol.
The scion tc and xb got married and named their baby Toyota CHR. IM became the corolla hatchback. But I still prefer the xBOX. Bring back the box!

Rebuilt it. Bad oil ring design
“Can’t beat something like this for fun and reliability” Scotty knows
But even if its almost half the value to fix it on a big repair.. Thats still cheaper than jumping into a whole new vehicle most times.
wrong, paying to repair a car will always be better than buying a new car that is 30% overpriced with a high APR these days near the 10% range... new cars are horrible deals these days even the cheap crappy Kias are 25k now lol
My parents bought me a 2010 Scion TC and I've driven it on many vacations about 195k miles and still sounds great (:

They charge all prep work, usually.
