I just celebrated 18 years with my white 2006 xB. Barring one accident in 2013 and a couple paint chips, it still looks new. I've put only 39,400 miles on it and believe it'll be good to go for a long time. I admire those of you who have kept up your xBs like trophy cars. They truly are one of a kind.
Best car I've ever owned. Bought a 2005 brand new. It started using oil around 35-40,000 miles. About a quart a month. Now at 175,000 miles, its a quart a week. Thats the only issue ive ever had. Only did oil changes, tires and brakes and a couple of other maintenance items like coolant change at 100k. Last month I had to put a starter in and one ignition coil went. I ended up changing them all. THATS IT. In 18 years. Ridiculously reliable. I'm even on the original clutch, struts and shocks, calipers and wheel cylinders. Crazy. The biggest thing now is rust underneath since I live in NY. Some rot is starting to develop and will probably be what eventually kills this car. But i can't complain. I wish they still made it.
2006... best car I every owned. Near zero issues. NY state salt took it away from me prematurely. No info-tainment. Real switches and knob controls. Great vehicle.
I helped my daughter buy an 04 XB over 15 years ago. Told her I’d keep her on my insurance until she gets another car. She’s 35 now, the Xb has over 300K on it & she’s still driving the dam thing! Replaced water pump about 5 years ago, and the starter last week. Just dawned on me - I’m not sure the plugs were ever replaced….anyway that cars a tank. I didn’t even watch this video 😂
First of all the oil consumption problem happened in the 07 and up models cuz that was the 2.4 L and it was Notorious for oil consumption issues. This 1.5 L has no oil consumption issues it's actually Bulletproof
Japanese 06 with 260,000 original everything. Bought in 08. Rear hatch handle, ac compressor went out and just re routed around it with a different belt so no ac anymore, cable for vent selector is broken, I’ve replaced the alternator 4 times, coil packs, intake manifold gasket, I leak power steering fluid pretty bad and oil disappears. But no end in sight. I’m expecting another 200,000 at least. I take it on a lot of dirt roads hunting and fishing, I haul kayaks on it with a roof rack. I love these things.
Own one that I bought brand new in 2005. I love this car. I currently have 191k miles. In 17 yrs I've changed the transmission once, changed the AC compressor, the starter, the radiator once. The car still runs great💪🏾
Wow. I’m feeling good after watching this. I have a 2005 but bought in July 2004 so 19 years ago. I have 87k still but I work from home for over a decade now. I hope to keep my car long. People seem to love it still almost 20 years later. I've only replaced the tires and breaks. Nothing major yet knock on wood!
Just bought a 2006 xB stick and it might be the coolest car I've had in years. An as a lifetime used car buyer, I'm a longtime fan of 1A Auto's how-to videos. This video was fun and informative, thanks guys!
2006 xb owner here, got mine at 86 k miles from my Aunt who got a new car and it was basically just a weekend driver. No problems yet, but my job has me putting an easy 200 to 300 miles a week. So oil changes are done at 3k every time. Love this car. It's the manual as well, zippy but wont win any races..and the mpg is insane.
Awesome video I bought a 2006.my brother inlaw bought a single owner 06 he has been keeping up on maintenance and he’s sitting at 546000 miles original motor and auto trans still running.I got mine from a older lady original owner 173k I right away change water pump thermostat and fan an temp switch and added a temp gauge
Bought automatic in October 2004, has 340,000 miles. I just did the head gasket, timing chain and of course a RE manufactured cylinder head from JEGS. Mpg went up 7 to almost 30. Used some good RTV on new timing cover and oil pan and it no longer leaks oil and is consuming very little. Also put on new crank shaft oil seal.
I've got a stick 2006 with 210k, and it's one of my favorite vehicles I've owned. All original suspension. So practical, cheap to fill, comfortable, and fun to drive. Can't ask for much more.
Agreed! I have had my Scion xb for 13 years now and its been the greatest money saver! Nothing major is ever wrong with it. It's the only car I've ever owned and I plan to keep it for many more years!
First issue for me on this car was the liftgate door handle. Then ignition coil after about 200k miles.. crazy how reliable this car is. And it can go 30mpg surface driving and 36mpg for freeway..
Bought my '06 new and have 110,000 miles on it. Everything works including the A/C and the aftermarket Rostra cruise control. Even has the original hatch handle! Besides regular maintenance the only repair was for the charcoal canister issue (for which Toyota should have issued a recall). It still looks great, but I recently discovered the plastic rocker covers are hiding a terrible secret when jacking the car up to replace the resonator and pipe between the cat and muffler. The rusty rockers are so bad that can't sell it with a clean conscience and will probably have to advertise it as a parts car. However it is still the most reliable car I've ever owned.
A/C problems with this model - Schrader a/c fill valve leaking. Trust me, not a cable problem, not an a/c pump problem. You can refill Freon but that will only last a week or so. Your local mechanic can change the Shrader valve in a few minutes, but you can too - if you don't want to risk contaminating your a/c fluid though, take it to a mechanic who can pump down the system and refill it.
I bought a 2005 xB made in Japan with 134000 miles for $2500 no leaks of any kind so far all I’ve changed has been the spark plugs oil, oil filter air filter cabin filter and it’s runs pretty good
I have an 06 that just turned 415k! She’s still running like a champ. I’ve had a few issues but over all been a fantastic car! These videos have been the most informative I have ever found! From the wheel bearing videos, brake and control arms all things I’ve done and I turned to these videos before I attempted anything!!! Thank you guys so much!!! I often wondered who’s Xb you’re fixing and if it’s for sale….?
06' 208k original emgine and 5spd trans , got it for $1200 and it runs great, it consumes oil quite a bit but its still doing great as my daily gas saver.
2005 one-owner with 196k miles. Changed: starter, alternator, throttle-position sensor, and a little vacuum hose under the car. Other than that, no issues! Still love it to death.
These are the best cars hands down if your looking for a good gas saver or just a good reliable car . I’ve owed three or these now . And they all have made it over 350k 400k still going strong still same parts since I got them at 100k . And drive over the mountains every week
They come with a Mazda engine. The best car I’ve ever had. I religiously change the oil every 3K miles. The transmission fluid is also easily changed. Use a 10 mm hex, and a gallon comes out. Use only Toyota Type IV. Yes, it’s not a complete change, but the car has 330 K miles, so I must be doing something right. I have a trailer hook on mine, and used it for years to haul my race motorcycle to tracks around the country for over 10 years. I figured the worst thing that could happen was a transmission failure, and it would still be cheaper to replace the transmission than buy a heavy pickup with all the needless expenses associated with that, but the transmission has never failed. It’s a parts bin car. It’s really a Yaris with that cool body.
My 06 XB has almost 300,000 miles on it and no real problems. Doesn’t burn oil. Only changed the fusable link and alternator as well as 1 coil pack. Rear Bearings went out at 250,000. Great Cars.
What made you change the alternator? I keep hearing a whining noise when i step on the gas pedal. Once i let off the gas pedal the noise stops and comes back as soon as i press on the pedal. Some say it's alternator whine, others say it's a transmission bearing. Did you get this noise and did it lead you to the alternator?
200 plus SOMEtimes? I can't wait to eclipse 200 with my 06, and get into the 300 or 400 club as I near ONE hundred! And this guy's a really good explainer.
I have a 2005, I never got any problems with my motor, I beat it to red line each days since 8 years... I do castrol synth oil + toyota filter and no oil combustion (I found a 40kmiles motor in junkyard and... I wanted to be very hard with my original one, as I have a spare but it never failed or use any oil). Well, 2/3 of the video is about bad motor maintenance, you need change transmission oil/prestone too!!!... The problem is in canada salty road, no antirust at all, so it have the rear suspention arm rust (as all echo and yaris does). so I expect to need weld soon or... but yours is more rust crusty than mine, so it make me feel more good about that. I have to A/C refill each 2 years. I changed all wheels bearings 3 years ago... but still strong and fun to beat and drive tight. I kept the original suspension, I bought 15 inch x8 wide wheels... Last year, I had a gas tank check engine in winter, I was think it's just the gas cap, so I not fixed it immediately, but the BAD--> I found that the metal pipe that go to gas tank was very rusted, salty water come inside the gas tank and rust everything inside and the pump as well... this was very costly repair for just a pipe. ( check engine can be nasty ;o ). It's by far my favorite every day car, I own a lexus is250 14 and a tacoma... The scion is so fun to drive and drive in trafic, light weight, economic, nice 360 view. I like it! put a smile on face of me and passenger, the best car in world! ;D
I have had 3 and seen so many with a big issue you did not do. The hatch handle breaking. It even got a recall 10 years after the car hit the states. Also missed the issue with the charcoal canister throwing codes
I bought a Scion xB in 2004 and didn’t have any oil issues until I reached 240,000 miles then I gave it to my friend after he totaled his car in an accident. He blew up the engine because of oil consumption. I was lucky enough to get a junkyard motor from a 2006 echo, and got a garage to swap engines. The only difference was the anti-knock sensor had one wire on 2004 and the 2006 had two wires one was twisted around the other to help cancel electrical noise.
My 2006 Scion XB has been very good to me, I actually keep up with the engine maintenance . The only complaint i have is about the paint specially on the front of the hood , oh and also the handle for the hatch back, but other than that is been a very good car.
You can tell by looking at the xb in this vid. It is missing parts and is poorly maintained. My wife loves hers at approx 330000. And I like it as well even if I have to put in another engine and trans. Forgot to mention 2nd gear grind from bad synchro common problem.
Nobody seems to mention the main issues, which is the body. I'm in the midwest rust belt, and the car sit so low to the ground, I didn't realize until much later how bad things were getting, and beside runners on the bottom don't drain properly so a bunch of rust builds up, if I would have known I would have put a small bead of silicone all the way across to keep the water out. I've got a 159,000 on a 2005 and it runs great, but the valve cover does leak it's too costly to go in there and fix so I just monitor my oil. Never any major problems.
You could also do half-and-half with Diesel and oil, run it for about 30 minutes and then change and put some new oil in her and don’t forget the new filter. I liked to take the old filter, dump it out. fill it with a little bit of the oil and diesel. Then put on the new filter in any oil after I do that.
05 manual with 99k. Only problems for me were the rear hatch handle breaking off when I looked at it too hard and the shifter being too low, added an extender.
My windows get stuck at times and the windshield wipers stop where you turn them off/don’t return to down. Door locks don’t really work either and the engine chirps because the motor mounts seem to be broken.
He forgot to mention that you have to shave the head & block when replacing head gasket in 75% of cases. Most important information always left out by 1a auto videos
Hey papa, thank you so much for that video. I look at my sinus beam. I just put a new AC compressor and I saw them up already but it’s not turning on the AC. It’s not turning on there’s any advice on that I already checked the fuses and I will look fine.
Check engine light on codes po441, po442 po446. Ive changed the gas cap. Oil filter and oil. While doing the spark plugs oil was on them can you show how to fix that
Toaster team! The only annoying thing I have going on is the loud mountain lion screech when I turn the car on with the ac on or even just my headlights on. When I turn either off it kills it, then when I get moving I can turn everything back on without the screech. I’ve changed the belt already. Any other suggestions?
Wow, you zipped right through the part that I wanted to see -- how to get the Heater Panel off!!! Please elaborate! I think my external/internal air control is broken.
Just bought a 04 xB auto 332k only issues are leaks oil from valve cover and has cylinder 1 misfire which has new plugs and coil packs watched a video and replace injectors and will fix the problem my new injectors are on the way already
Is there a video of why chevy OBS’s 88-98 would shut off while at a red light or going in reverse? Mine is an 88 c1500 5.7 350 engine and it sometimes shuts off.
I love my 2004 xB but I am experiencing the first one you mentioned. It’s burning through engine oils. I am basically topping off engine oil about every 1,000 miles and using those engine gleaning kind doesn’t seem to work. Does this mean it’s time for overhauling the engine? Piston gasket/ring and clean up issue?
Own 2 -- 05 and 06. Great cars but.....come to find out that the AC has issues. And THAT was not on the list. Both ACs have failed. Come to find out that the AC compressor on these do not have a clutch. Which means that the compressor is always turning. Which means wear. Which means its on/turning when it should not be...winter. Otherwise...love those cars.
My evap code turned out to be the Charcoal filter. Very easy to replace. Takes 20 minutes or so. i think there is a TH-cam! video on how to do it (otherwise I wouldn't have tried it myself). I too tried replacing the gas cap first and that didn't fix it.
Mine would be a Toyota as well if they still made the xA. Unfortunately, Toyota no longer makes any vehicles like the xA and xB. And the small cars they do make are all ugly.
My '06, 1.5L-5 speed manual started using oil at about 300K (beginning of the pandemic). It was a long distance rural to city commuter and had a 80 mile round trip daily commute. Moved into PDX in 2017. Much less driving. City car now. Very regular maintenance always. Changed all fluids every year and I managed to kill the original transmission at 222K??? No re-builders or rebuilt tranny west of the Mississippi then so we went w/a tranny out of a collision junk w/100K on it. Now 322K and the transmission is whining increasingly loud. It must be the way I drive it? In my defense l have an '89 F-150-4x4 w/a granny low 4 speed w/600K on it. I want to getthe xB it to 344K to get 222K out of the second tranny. We shall see. I'd ideally like to run it out to 400K?! Changed the PCV valve and that helped for a bit on oil consumption but back to 1 quart/ 3000 miles.
Never had this happen before with any car my 2005 Toyota Scion XB 103400 miles. couldn't pump gas in tank, kept stopping, like when your tank is full but wasn't that cost over $400. dollars Now my Highlander 2013 Toyota 47040 miles, seems to be doing same thing, I hope not. Otherwise, their great cars seriously
Hey there was wondering if you guys would know anything about Toyota RAV4 2006 the battery terminal wire is getting hot on the positive side if you can help me out with this that be great
+Mona Lucero We wouldn't be able to diagnose an issue like that here, you may want to have a local mechanic take a look at it. Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
I have a 2004 xb with 150k miles. It uses no oil between changes. I love it. It has tons of interior room for a small car. I have only needed routine maintenance except the latch handle broke. I think that is a not uncommon problem.
Please help: I just bought a '05 xB and when I brake to a stop each time the left front clunks a bit, it I stop harder, the clunk is more pronounced. Simply braking while not coming to a stop does not produce a clunk. What's going on?
Have you check your front tire joint? Mine had to get replaced recently and same Xb05. If you turn your steering wheel to far left, look at where tire connects to main steel rod, there is joint parts which will worn out over the time. If your brake is working, then the sound could come from this joint being old. (But this was just my experience. You can have different problem. so I would take your car to the shop and explain your problem. ) Front Outer Tie Rods Front Lower Control Arms with Ball Joints Front Sway Bar Links
how are you gonna talk about xb problems and not talk about the handle on the hatch which comes off on just about all of them because they made them from plastic
Im learning things from every video y'all make while keeping it entertaining thanks a lot keep up the great work! Ps will you do german cars? i feel like that could maybe boost your views to where they should be :)
I finally picked up my 2005 xb. Cannot be any more thrilled.
I have a 2004 with 315,020 miles original engine, trans and suspension. These xB engine and trans from 03-07 were build to last an eternity.
Same drivetrain as the ECHO
I own a 2005 xb with 230k miles original engine and trans and no check engine light or nothing wrong with it I love this little car dude
I have a 2004 as well with 366,962 miles original engine and transmission as well. Definitely the best car I’ve ever owned (reliability wise)

I have had 3 and seen so many with a big issue you did not do. The hatch handle breaking. It even got a recall 10 years after the car hit the states. Also missed the issue with the charcoal canister throwing codes
Yes finally the car i have lol
I bought a Scion xB in 2004 and didn’t have any oil issues until I reached 240,000 miles then I gave it to my friend after he totaled his car in an accident.
He blew up the engine because of oil consumption. I was lucky enough to get a junkyard motor from a 2006 echo, and got a garage to swap engines. The only difference was the anti-knock sensor had one wire on 2004 and the 2006 had two wires one was twisted around the other to help cancel electrical noise.
Moving fast to understand main points is how it's done ! This guy rules!
Good information as I've been looking for one of these cars . Thanks
i got a scion xb from a friend cant wait to start driving it
I don't get problems with my xa, I'm thankful and wish luck to the Xb owners
Same car, different clothes.
I love my XB. It’s my daily driver. I have a simple sub/ amp stereo system. Everything’s stock.
My 2006 Scion XB has been very good to me, I actually keep up with the engine maintenance . The only complaint i have is about the paint specially on the front of the hood , oh and also the handle for the hatch back, but other than that is been a very good car.
My rocker panels are nearly rusted out. Thinking I might need to learn some auto body technique and weld some new steel onto the car.
I love my little toaster!
My daughter bought this little car today from a family member. Her first car.
I got a 2005 Scion xB with 180k miles running strong with Christmas lights on my dash
2005 xB here, just hit 305,000 original miles and still ticking
Hey papa, thank you so much for that video. I look at my sinus beam. I just put a new AC compressor and I saw them up already but it’s not turning on the AC. It’s not turning on there’s any advice on that I already checked the fuses and I will look fine.
It pisses me off when I drive by another 1st xB and honk, they don’t even look or honk back…
That because they don't get it lol
I have the only nicely modified xb in my area so I don’t have friends with the same car☹️
I just started honking at other XBs. So far they honking back.😆 I didn't know it was a thing🤣
This was a vw (air cooled) thing bitd or at least a peace sign/ wave it may still be, as I haven’t driven mine in years.
If your piston rings are worn how is a few back-to-back oil changes going to fix that?
Just love the drama! Yes!
If the list continued to 10, it should include the starter going out😂 I love my xB, but the starter issue is a real PITA.
Sir I love ur video and explanation. It help me so much. It our first Scion Xb 2005. Thk u thku.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Just a heads up guys, if your xb rattles at 1rst gear, than it's time to replace the spark plugs with Denso, cheap on ebay
Holy smokes, that's some serious rust. Must be from the "rust belt". Don't miss living in that.
Can you tell me if my 2006 scion xb it's obd2?can't find the right answer. Thanks
The thermostat housing is a pain as well 😅
How often should you change your oil is the XB??
You guys should have an app
Clean your air intake manifold and PCV system with kerosene. Can cause so many problems and no one seems to tell anyone to do it.
So the number one problem is negligence not the car. I love my scion. I would buy another one in an instant.
+Jose Romo Thanks for the feedback!
Hi what's the mpg for this car ?
He made replacing a head gasket sound like a cinch, pfft right lol.
I dig the sound effects
Idiot light on for a year. Code says small evap leak. Changed gas cap. Sniffed around connectors with starting fluid. Nothing. Any ideas?
My evap code turned out to be the Charcoal filter. Very easy to replace. Takes 20 minutes or so. i think there is a TH-cam! video on how to do it (otherwise I wouldn't have tried it myself). I too tried replacing the gas cap first and that didn't fix it.
My next car will be a Toyota definitely
+michael turner Thanks for the feedback!
Never had this happen before with any car my 2005 Toyota Scion XB 103400 miles.
couldn't pump gas in tank, kept stopping, like when your tank is full but wasn't that cost over $400. dollars
Now my Highlander 2013 Toyota 47040 miles, seems to be doing same thing, I hope not.
Otherwise, their great cars seriously
Thanks, you looks like a great mechanic with a "lubricated" side.......lol.....
Hey there was wondering if you guys would know anything about Toyota RAV4 2006 the battery terminal wire is getting hot on the positive side if you can help me out with this that be great
Like how hot?
I have one 2006 xb I love my car and it's having problems with the air and exhaust fumes but not a leak and the engine shakes hard
My fan not turning on can you help explain what I n ed to do and what do I do ser?
+Mona Lucero We wouldn't be able to diagnose an issue like that here, you may want to have a local mechanic take a look at it. Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
I have a 2004 xb with 150k miles. It uses no oil between changes. I love it. It has tons of interior room for a small car. I have only needed routine maintenance except the latch handle broke. I think that is a not uncommon problem.
+Randall Boerlin Thanks for the feedback!
You can have different problem. so I would take your car to the shop and explain your problem. )
Front Outer Tie Rods
Front Lower Control Arms with Ball Joints
Front Sway Bar Links
Thanks for your educational video.
how are you gonna talk about xb problems and not talk about the handle on the hatch which comes off on just about all of them because they made them from plastic
Still look futuristic to me!
What about 2nd gen. Is there a video on those?
Tanks
Oil 🛢 consumption was the 2008-2010 model. And secondly Toyota fixed those problems in a recall.
My biggest issue is from heel to toe. I feel the seat is too high and I can’t position my foot right
I got a xa and is at close to 300000. Just a little tired but good
good video thanks i learned something
i have 400,00 0 on mine barely started burning oil, lol
Great video, THANX!
My shoebox has treated me well to say the least. 580,000 and still chugging
Hell yea! I hope mine gets thetr! 226k as of 10/1/22, daily driver
I have a 2005 which is burning oil but no smoke or oil leaks its done 240000ks any1 knows what it could be
Im learning things from every video y'all make while keeping it entertaining thanks a lot keep up the great work! Ps will you do german cars? i feel like that could maybe boost your views to where they should be :)
mine is over 340,000 and still running
Yep it’s called Maintaining your damn vehicle
