The best Scion xb's with 04 to 06. They had the smaller engine but it was indestructible. My 06 has 280,000 MI and my other 06 is it about 180,000 miles. Only problem I had with one of them is they rust out but I do live on the east coast so it's no surprise. But it's still running real well.

I'm like you, Scotty. I prefer to work alone, on a car. I'll bet that you have pretty high standards with your repairs, and get irritated watching fellow mechanics take short cuts with their work.
I call my '10 XB my mini-mini van. It is for me a good combination of roominess, performance, and utility. At 100K it is using about 3/4 quart between 3000 mile changes. If consumption gets worse, and considering the complexity and cost of newer vehicles, I may have the rebuild kit installed.
I have an 08 and I also call it that! It’s crazy how much I can fit in this car, and as a tall person, it’s nice to feel like a car was built with me in mind for a change
Love my Scion XB. Managed to get the extended warranty that fixed the oil consumption issues and the only other major problem was a faulty alternator 7 years ago.
I had an '09 Matrix XR with the 2.4L Oil Burner. When it was newer I did a full exhaust system for (equal length 4-1 headers, high flow cat, 2.5" tubing, flowmaster 80 series), it was great fun, and it started burning oil around 110,000km. Funny thing though was when I returned the exhaust to stock with OEM parts when I was getting ready to sell it, that seemed to solve it. I would put it through the same driving as normal and same situations that would cause it to spit out a big blue cloud with the custom exhaust, but no matter what I did I there would be no cloud coming out.
So I notice you have a thing for sporty looking hatchback's I seen. The only two hatchbacks I owned so far in my life were a Chevy Volt and a Lexus CT200H and they were both some of my favorite vehicles that I've owned in the past.
2012 XB auto with 275K miles and still going. Yep uses oil and I drive 70miles per day. I check oil weekly and it keeps on going. I have recently switched to the Valvoline Restore line of oil and it does seem to be helping as it helps removed the deposits around the rings. Time will tell and the xB keeps on going and runs great. No power issues. Great cars but you have to keep the oil checked Frequently!!!!!
The 1.5 in my '17 Yaris has been great. With yhe 5 speed it's fun to sling around corners and the freeways. At 55 mph in 5th gear, on flat ground, it gets over 50 mpg. Around 103k miles on it now. Interested in how long it will last. These were great baseline cars, a shame they didn't sell well here in America
@@jcrowellz2000 I own a 2008 Toyota Yaris sedan 5 speed. Owned it since 2013, I have 321,000 miles and just changed the clutch and she runs great. In almost 10 years only the clutch and water pump have gone out
dogs, the Scion's were great cars with minimal gadgets, which some people like more. A shame Toyota kinda marketed them wrong. But idk how they could have marketed low priced good cars any better 🤔
My Camry has that engine and not burning oil. Even if it does I'll just change the oil more as it's been the most reliable car I've owned. The paintwork is still good as new even being under the Australian sun.
Honestly I believe this has more to do with the supplier for those rings. Not all cars have the problem. Both of my xBs do, but I’ve solved it by a piston soak with Berryman’s.
I always like the TC’s, when they first came out what in 2003/4 I almost bought one, but I have seen so many videos and had like three friends who rolled them. At least the first generation has a propensity to roll over which is crazy for such a low to the ground car….
My 09 has been a stellar vehicle. I found that regular oil (non synthetic) loses less oil. Was 16,000 brand new, and has been super reliable. Decent mileage and tons of room.
@@christianhudspeth3338 for real. Always used full synthetic in the Scion, lost at least a quart a month. Switched to 5/30 conventional, and saw a dramatic reduction in oil loss.
Hey Scotty, after watching an older video of yours I tried AT-205 on my Scion XB with the oil consumption issue. It worked for this issue!!! I haven't had to top off in the last 8 months.
I used to have the camry with the 1mz-fe. That motor could go forever i used to see them with over 200k miles all the time in the junkyard where i used to work too.
I can confirm my 2000 solara sle V6 is at 205,000 it's a tank if it makes it to 300,000 I'll be happy if it doesn't then i still got my money's worth only paid 300 for the car
I have a 2002 Camry with the 2AZ-FE engine. It does not use any oil, but only had 49,000 miles on it. I change the oil at 3,000 or 1 year and hope the pistons and rings last longer than I do. My oil filler only says use 5W-30 oil.
Just got rid of my 08 Xb. Had about 285,000 miles on it. Still ran great. Only reason I had to let it go was because some ahole in a f-350 slammed into me and totalled it. Was hoping to give it to my son.
@sonafsarek dam rare find! Super low mileage! I love stick shift Toyota’s, in my experience, Manual Toyota’s are the easiest cars to learn manual on. Clutches aren’t stiff, & the shifters feel great. Is it a 4 door or 2 door, & what colour is it? I’m just curious. You should also look up the “million km Echo.” It’s amazing.
I have the 1st gen xb with the 1.8 engine. Still 30 in town with almost 200 thousand. Does use a little oil. Quart every 3 thousand. But I do a lot of stop n go driving. Love my "Toaster"
I am second owner of my XB. I bought it at 108,000 I have never had this problem currently at 238,000 miles. I bought it 10 years ago never looked back. Only problems was a exhaust manifold cracked $600 repair at dealership not worth snaping aluminum heads off and yanking engine retapping. Replaced batteries once. That's it. Only time I had problem with oil is when I used Fram oil filters. Bought different brand never had that problem again. I have had numerous people follow me to try buy my car. Sorry your gana pay more than what you think to walk out your Door turn the key fires every time.
I have an 08 scion xb I bought new used oil from the start tried getting the pistons replaced but they said it passed inspection so I put a couple quarts in between oil changes and kept driving it it has 170000 miles still runs like a champ have no plans of getting rid of it.when it blows up in another couple hundred thousand miles then I will probably salvage it with no regrets!
I have an XB I love that car you put the seats down in it you have basically a single cab truck. I do have to put oil in it but I see it as just basic ownership for having really any older Toyota, if you keep an eye on your oil and your coolant that XB will outlast my son hopefully
I loved my 2008 Scion XB. IT was a tank but burned oil like a MF'er. Mine started burning oil around 130K so the recall wouldnt fix it. I loved that car it was very reliable otherwise AC still blowed cold and ran like a champ. I ended up trading it in 2020 and sometimes still regret not keeping it.
My sister had a Scion xB that burned a bunch of oil too. I bought a Scion tC right after she bought her car and mine was burning oil before 100k. Guess it's just a characteristic of them. I traded it in last year for a 2017 Mustang that's been great so far but still miss my little Scion sometimes.
Same thing is going on in my 09 accord 2.4. Honda didn't build the piston rings correctly and is a notorious issue in the 08, 09, 10 models. So much so there was a class action lawsuit. Im always monitoring it. At this point with cars so expensive now I might as well get it fixed after I finish paying it off. Probably cheaper than buying another car and getting stuck with another note
My Scion 2008 I purchased used in Puerto Rico, the military shipped out to the States when I joined, still running strong like a champ. While my broke friends drive brand-new financed vehicles I'm happy driving my beat-up Scion Xb. Is been a blessing to my family.
These 2010 scion xb are very good there’s nothing wrong with them there bullet proof. Just avoid the 2008 model year. I have owned 6 of these cars and none have had major issues
That one he showed is not the box..that’s like an 08 or so.. u see mine..it’s an 06 I bought in fall of 05.. it’s still going..1.6l.. gave it to family member 5 years ago..
My wife and I had an 04 Corolla with the 1.8 L and 4 speed auto....that power train is nearly indestructible. The fuel economy was crazy...always in the low 40s and as high as 50 mpg.
I drive my 2013 5 speed XB 120 miles a day 6 days a week it has NEVER left me stranded. Ive only replaced brake pads. I change its oil with full synthetic every 4,500 miles i get 30mpg fills up with $36 my f150 fills up with $85 so it saves me ALOT of money. You put the seats down and you can fit a washer or dryer i have. I also put a queen mattress on the roof when i was moving lol i love the car
I must of gotten lucky to have the upgraded model. I have an 08 with with 224k miles on it and still have the original starter in it. No oil burning issues.
My 2008 Camry lost 1 quart every 1000 miles. My dealer (Bert Wolfe in Charleston, WV) stated they would have worked on my car had it burned more than 1 qt/1000 miles.
A “car guy” doesn’t know scion was made to attract younger people to Toyota brand through riskier lifestyle designs. Owned for 10 years and never burned oil.
Bought a Scion a couple years ago. Was fortunate in that I didn’t know about the 2.4 engines, but mine is an iM with the 1.8. It’s a turtle, but hopefully it will be a long lived one.
@@stevechance150 in my experience 80% of high mileage car deaths are when owners get tired & start slacking regular maintenance. I will always maintain my 06 Matrix religiously even when it has 500,000 km on it
They made scions to appeal to the younger crowd. The people who thought Toyotas were an old man's car. A Scion was my first ever new car. I had the same 2.4L 2az-fe engine. I had it for 150k miles. Never burnt a drop of oil. The only money I ever put into it was wheel bearings. All 4 eventually went bad in its life.
Young mechanics feel the need for pecking orders. I work alone too the best advice I can give people who are "still learning" is watch n learn. There is a reason you have two eyes, ears and one mouth. It's better than what I was told as a young mechanic " boy, I done forgotten more than you will ever know". I made a point to prove them wrong. Scotty does a great service by sharing his knowledge with those who are willing to listen.
Unlike Hyundai/Kia, Toyota cares about its customers. Hyundai/Kia has had oil-burning engine problems and they don't want to fix it, so a class action lawsuit has been filed.
Against your advice I bought a 2009 Vibe GT. 242,000 miles. Replaced parts as needed. Burns a quart every 300-400 miles. Switched from Synthetic to conventional burns slower. Going to go from 5w20 to 5w30 heard that’s a good idea. Will contact Toyota as per ur advice. What about using that solvent in the cylinders? Barriman(?). Thx Scotty
The 2015 model has the 2.4L engine and Toyota made changes to the engine when it came out and mine has 256,000 miles roughly on it and it doesn't burn any oil I change the oil every 5,000 miles like Toyota says to and I don't lose any oil since I replace the valve cover gasket. And it runs like a new car yet
The oil rings were deliberately made to have less resistance to get better fuel economy because of the EPA. If you don't change your oil every 3000 miles the the rings start sticking and cant expand correctly and become froze to the piston. This is why you now see other auto manufactures saying its normal for your car to use a quart of oil every 1500 miles or so. This is the EPA's fault.
My wife has a 2011 scion xb, which is a Toyota Corolla, same engine, chassis and transmission, drivetrain. Yes they consume oil, as long as you keep oil in it, change oil every 3-4k mi, it will run for a very long time, its a Good car, my wife's has 140k mi, only the belt tensioner has broken, its a good car. This guy recomends buying a scion tc, which has the same engine. I use lucas oil stabilizer and run 5w 30w instead of 5w20w , and it burns about half a court every 1500mi , just check it every week or every fill up, its not hard
FYI Warranty is 10 years or 150k miles which ever occurs first. Had my 2010 XB excessive oil consumption test done twice before getting them to repair at 146k!!
In an earlier vid, Scotty commented about Xbs burning oil. I'm glad I got the last of the early models---an '06 with a 1.5 and a 5-speed. (I didn't like the previews of the later models, so I grabbed a new '06 when I had the chance---I had to wait a couple weeks for a manual).
I have a 2013 Scion, Xb with 166,000 miles. It runs like a top. At 150,000 miles, My Ford Sportrak was falling apart. Toyota marketed this car wrong. I'm almost 70 and love this car.

I'll bet that you have pretty high standards with your repairs, and get irritated watching fellow mechanics take short cuts with their work.
Funny, was just looking at Scion the other day, so this video is very timely
Glad you didn't buy 😅
I always see things AFTER Scotty says it's bad. Just my luck.....
No my friend loves her Scion🤷🏻♂️
Scion xB are fine. Just get 2012 and up.
Its funny same here I am looking for a scion xb and still want one now lol
Hey Scotty, toyota dealer tech here. Our dealership still replaces many 2AZ-FE engines, another is the 1AR-FE which is a 2.7L 4cyl.
Where are you located
On my way
TELL ME WHERE YOU ARE! NOW LOL
Where are you Located? I would make the trip out there.
Mine needs it. Location pls
The 1NZFE engine in many of them was bulletproof. I got 400,000 miles out of one and it still ran well when I sold it.
1 gen 04-06
These Toyota Bb in Japan ran great, never had a problem with mine.
I heard only some of the 09 Matrix with the 2.4L actually burned oil.
Own a 2016 Scion iM 6sp with only 55k miles. Basically a sporty looking corolla hatchback, love it!
So I notice you have a thing for sporty looking hatchback's I seen. The only two hatchbacks I owned so far in my life were a Chevy Volt and a Lexus CT200H and they were both some of my favorite vehicles that I've owned in the past.
04’ Scion Xb (wifes) 334k miles still running great
14’ Scion XB (mine) 89k miles and i hope i dont have to worry now lol
I had a 2009 scion xb, drove it to 180,000 miles and still ran with no problems. I gave it to my cousin and bought another Scion XB.
This is a shame about the engines because the slightly larger 1.5 L 1NZ-FE used in Yaris' and Echos is simply indestructible (with proper care)!
Your engine is 1 liter smaller.
In almost 10 years only the clutch and water pump have gone out
The 1nzfe was also in the first gen xb's and is also bulletproof and also used in the xa
dogs, the Scion's were great cars with minimal gadgets, which some people like more.
I miss my 2011 Scion TC, thing survived 3 accidents and still drove like brand new no issues.
I always like the TC’s, when they first came out what in 2003/4 I almost bought one, but I have seen so many videos and had like three friends who rolled them. At least the first generation has a propensity to roll over which is crazy for such a low to the ground car….
@@MugatuJag that sucks to hear your buddies went through that experience with them, I almost bought one around that same year. 😕
"Most people are full of baloney" -- you got that right, Scotty!!
My 09 has been a stellar vehicle. I found that regular oil (non synthetic) loses less oil. Was 16,000 brand new, and has been super reliable. Decent mileage and tons of room.
So conventional oil actually saved your car from burning oil? Interesting I'll have to try that.
@@christianhudspeth3338 for real. Always used full synthetic in the Scion, lost at least a quart a month. Switched to 5/30 conventional, and saw a dramatic reduction in oil loss.
I’d use conventional since I change every 5000 miles. My 15 has been on synthetic, but I hardly find it necessary.
@@djkenny1202 could I use semi synthetic instead or does that go into a different realm of physics?
@@christianhudspeth3338 High mile oil seems to work better for me. I have the same engine, but mine doesn't lose oil from the pistons.
My best buddy has an xb that's handicap accessible. Runs great
Hey Scotty, after watching an older video of yours I tried AT-205 on my Scion XB with the oil consumption issue.
@@BenDover-lx1gh i think it can if you change the timing belt.
@@daydos_soundscapes I'll have in mind 👍
In Australia these are sold as the Toyota Ruckus
I have a 2002 Camry with the 2AZ-FE engine. It does not use any oil, but only had 49,000 miles on it. I change the oil at 3,000 or 1 year and hope the pistons and rings last longer than I do. My oil filler only says use 5W-30 oil.
@Jonathan A Ah, right. My 2AZ-FE has the head bolt problems that cause coolant leaks and overheating and warpage. Pick you poison.
Just got rid of my 08 Xb. Had about 285,000 miles on it. Still ran great. Only reason I had to let it go was because some ahole in a f-350 slammed into me and totalled it. Was hoping to give it to my son.
Wow that sucks. The 2nd gen xBs really do last forever as long as you check the oil and fill it as needed
Dealing with the Oil BBQ burning at a rapid rate with the 2010 scion xb. Thank you for all the advice. Going at 207K miles still runs very well.
I have a 2003 Toyota Echo, only 49k miles, stick shift, still runs well and gets 40-45 mpg.
I drove an 02 for 10 years until the differential failed. 110 K miles.
Spun a rod bearing in mine. .. The oil was a little low.. thanks for the video.. maybe if I ask nicely - Toyota will help out.
I have a 2011 scion tc. Made in Japan. Runs like a a dream. 137,000 miles so far. No issues. I put royal purple 5-20 every 4,000 miles.
I’m from the uk so I’d love a guy like scotty over here as we don’t get allot of the Toyotas USA get
Same thing is going on in my 09 accord 2.4.
That's why the first gen Scion is the best. My '06 is running fine at 182,000 miles with only oil changes and transmission fluid changes.
06 also on 68,000 looking forward to longevity
Mine currently has 277K
Have a 06 XB, amazing game car, 385K miles, same engine and transmission and all engine parts, had since 07, and works amazing
They need to bring it back still rocking the BB
That one he showed is not the box..that’s like an 08 or so.. u see mine..it’s an 06 I bought in fall of 05.. it’s still going..1.6l.. gave it to family member 5 years ago..
i had a 2015 xb ran great never burned any oil.... 90000 miles great little car terrible on gas though
I love my 15. Its a stickshift.
I bought the 09 xb new and it still runs great. I just keep track of the oil level.
2011 with 232,000 miles all original except brakes, tires and alternator, burns about a quart between 5k oil changes
My 2008 Camry lost 1 quart every 1000 miles. My dealer (Bert Wolfe in Charleston, WV) stated they would have worked on my car had it burned more than 1 qt/1000 miles.
Scotty: find a good mechanic like me
Scion owner: where is my gorilla tape
I'm sad my 06 is rotted 😢. Still runs, heat and ac are still very great. 182,000 miles. I'm gonna miss it
A “car guy” doesn’t know scion was made to attract younger people to Toyota brand through riskier lifestyle designs. Owned for 10 years and never burned oil.
I love my XB❤❤❤❤ she has a ton of miles and still runs great. That is my baby ❤❤❤
Sicon XB is the iconic Scion vehicle.
The first generation xB (2004 -2006) aka "The Toaster" is iconic. The second generation xB doesn't have the same fan base.

Got a 07 Toyota Camry and it definitely burns oil. I just listen to Scotty & my mechanic and just keep the oil changes going. And it still runs good.
Did you buy it new? Only 25% of people in this country perform regular maintenance
I have the same year Camry What oil do you put in it? I originally used 10-40 then went back to its original cap 5-20
I put 306,000 miles on my '03 Camry before it died. And the only reason it died was because I had slacked off on the oil changes.
@@stevechance150 in my experience 80% of high mileage car deaths are when owners get tired & start slacking regular maintenance. I will always maintain my 06 Matrix religiously even when it has 500,000 km on it
@@kolbymartin9743 No, it was used. Previous owner took extremely great care of vehicle.
Mine has the 1.8 no oil loss after 150,000 miles no leaks except small powersteering leak does miss fire every once and a while.
My 2005 vibe with the 1.8 5 speed transmission has over 293000 runs great and fun to drive
the first gen was great, 2nd gen has its issues, some motors burn oil bad.
Too old to know what's good anymore.

Also...family.
Interesting I love the first gen scion xb! They came out when I was a senior in high school and I just loved the style!
Unless it’s a hybrid wiring issue.
An so was one for Toyota, so like Kia/ Hyundai they don't want to fix their vehicles
Basically don’t buy any Camrys or corollas either for a 20 year stretch bc they all have the same drive terrain
5:45 The way this dude waves his arms around I thought for sure he was about to knock over the full quart!
Against your advice I bought a 2009 Vibe GT. 242,000 miles. Replaced parts as needed. Burns a quart every 300-400 miles. Switched from
Synthetic to conventional burns slower. Going to go from 5w20 to 5w30 heard that’s a good idea.
Will contact Toyota as per ur advice. What about using that solvent in the cylinders? Barriman(?). Thx Scotty
Number 4 cylinder is on the Naked End ? Never heard that before. Too funny.
My 2006 is still going strong. Love it!
"Most people are full of baloney." You got that right, Scotty.
Afternoon Scotty! from Ma.
Im on my second g2 xb and still never been disappointed even to fix them.
Never was a car dude and still managed 😊
Hope to have a fleet soon😅
Dude I know of this house that has like 5 of them parked outside lol. He only really drives one though, it’s the rare rust orange color.
2007-2015 Scion XB's all come with the 2.4 AZFE engines. Those years dont have 2 options. So its best to stay away from all 07' to 15' scions.
I have an 08 Scion XB. Yes it burns oil, about a quart every 2000 miles. It has 180,000 and still has plenty of life left!
It was low tension rings that caused it.
Got 145,000 miles on my xb and it burns oil like crazy thanks for letting me know why
FYI Warranty is 10 years or 150k miles which ever occurs first. Had my 2010 XB excessive oil consumption test done twice before getting them to repair at 146k!!
I love my first gen XB! But 2nd gen are notorious oil burners. My ‘05 doesn’t use a drop
