Sad that it was our last day in NYC but had to share my thoughts on what lens you’ll truly need in places like nyc!
I said it before and will say it again. Less is more when traveling. While the 35-150 may be a fantastic lens, it's too big and heavy for urban use. The A7Cii with 20-70 + ZV-E1 with 11mm APS-C lens (for vlogging) is all you need. With 33MP, you can crop in a ton in post if want to tighten composition up later. I still think a Q2 would be an awesome addition - it's perfect for nighttime when you want a fast wide lens but don't want to carry a bag.
Definitely would be great combo those two! The Leica would be cool but too expensive for what it is to me haha
Absolutely! I went to NYC and brought my 14-24 and 35GM. For telephoto shots I used my tiny RX100 vii. The 20-40 would be the perfect "one and done" lens for compact cities IMO. I don't mind bringing an extra lens, but if I wanted to go as light as possible, that'd be the lens to get.
That’s a sweet combo you have! How do you like that rx100 VII? I’ve contemplated getting one a long while but didn’t get one haha got an A7cii haha
But yea the 20-40 is too good for the size honestly. I recently picked up a 24-70 sigma but not as compact as the 20-40 sadly haha
@@EasyTigerCreative I love my RX100 VII. It's so small and capable. It's the main camera I use when I'm in transit or encumbered. It doesn't get TOO much use when the sun goes down, but when lighting is plentiful it's incredible. AI denoise is also a game changer for this camera.
Just know that you'll have to frame your photos without Bokeh in mind for the most part.
I think my favorite feature is the pop up EVF. It's just so fun to use lol.
@@duvalpenny100 maybe I’ll get one eventually when I can find one used for a good price! I’ve been getting too much gear for me lately 😂 would feel guilty getting more right now haha but definitely want to pick one up for the future!
Look forward to seeing your UK content when you come over - I'm heading the other way for a week in NYC in Feb 2025
I’m stoked to explore London area and its surrounding towns! I’ve only gotten to be at the airport 🥲 so I’m stoked!
And that’ll be fun for you to go to nyc! So much to see and do! If you need recommendations, shoot me a DM on insta and I’d be happy to let you know what we’ve done that’s worth it.
I visited NY a few years ago. At the time I had Fuji and Pentax cameras. For light travel, I only brought my Fuji X-T2 and an 18-55 (28-8 FF equivalent). I felt limited with a 28mm lens. I think the 20-40 is a much better choice for the NY skyscrapers.
Yes the 20-40 would’ve been a lot nicer! The wider part is always greater in places like that.
The 20-70mm f4 would probably be the way to go. The Tamron 28-200 for London would probably be fine as well although not as wide.
I plan to maybe bring my 20-40 Tamron and recently picked up a used sigma 24-70 f2.8 so might do that over my 35-150 probably!
I have shot with the 20-40 and the 17-50. I sold my 17-28 and trying to get one of the two I mentioned. I like the 17-50 and do not mind the f4. However, it has serious distortion and vignetting issue at 17mm and corner sharpness issues at the 50mm end. So I think the sensible alternative is the 20-40. It is a better corrected lens. Albeit with a more limited range but the f2.8 is a nice bounce.
I shoot landscapes mostly but getting ready to do a street project. I think the 20-40 would be perfect for that.
Have you tried the Sony 20-70 f4? If you don’t mind the f4 I’d recommend that one. I got it over the 17-50 since I’m ok giving up that 17 range to just get more range with the 20-70.
@@EasyTigerCreative I considered the Sony 20-70 but I saw reviews that said the 20mm has severe distortion. I guess the Tamron 17-50 is the same at 17mm.
The advice was to go to 20mm on Tamron and 22-23 on the Sony to get rid of most of the distortion. This fact makes an excellent point for the Tamron 20-40. The reviews I have seen show that 20-40 has much less distortion and vignetting on the wide end.
I do mostly landscapes and need the zoom on the wide end mostly.
@@bizpixvegas7651 then I’d definitely recommend the 20-40 by Tamron! My most used lens I’ll be honest haha love the size, quality and ease of use!
@@EasyTigerCreative Thank you for the heads up. I think the 20-40 is the new standard lens. We used to get a 50mm to start with. I think the 20-40 could be the new 50 but with a lot more to offer.
@@bizpixvegas7651 definitely!
I really wish Sony had a 20-50 at f/2.8 because I don’t really need 50-70 for street. I think it’s the same for a lot of people.
*without the reverse zoom
Yea I was bummed their 24-50 wasn’t that range cause would’ve been nice a 20-50 f2.8
Do you prefer your 20-70 than the 20-40 ?
Not every time. The 20-70 is great for an all around lens to get extra range and just be fine with the f4. But the 20-40 is more condense so it is nice for walking around a lot.

Why not the 17-28 with the 28-75?
Because I’m ok giving up the 17mm range to have more than just 28mm for me.
