So interesting... I've never heard this song as bitter or mean. I've always heard it as resignation, sadness, acceptance of something that happens in so many relationships... where no one is as fault... you've just grown apart, and it's time to end it. I first heard this song when I was 13, but I never really *got* it until my 30's, when I went through that kind of breakup. His ability to capture the nuance of that kind of feeling is remarkable. He's a fantastic lyricist. Very much recommend checking out his catalog...especially from the 70s. Crossing my fingers to see your reaction to more of his music🤞.
I agree. I take this as an internal dialog. His thoughts as he contemplates his life and their relationship. Sharing with the world through his art. BTW a lot of us love sad songs. They give us comfort and remind us that we are not alone in our occasional sadness. After all it is part of life. And sadness inspires such great poetry, as this song proves.
Jackson Browne (the color not the cookie ;) is my favorite singer-songwriter alongside John Prine. His songs are deep and so well written. He writes of social issues and injustice, love and joy, life and pain. For Andrei I suggest 'Walking Slow' from the same album. ☮🤎🎶
@@laurakali6522 You've got that right, Laura. There is a thread of sorrow running through most, if not all, of Jackson's songs. How about, "...and in the end, they traded their tired wings/ for the resignation that living brings (what a great line!)/ and exchanged love's bright and fragile glow for the glitter and the rouge/ And in a moment, they were swept before the deluge."
He is an amazing singer-songwriter. Still alive and still performing. Check out his song The Pretender my personal favorite but he does have a giant catalog of great music.
I was obsessed with this man and this album and especially this song in the mid - 70’s when life held such promise. In later years, I had it to hold onto when love slowly dissolved before it finally disappeared and I realized that this music and lyric brought me peace while allowing me the sadness I was working through. For this reason, it remains very special for me. Hopefully the sorrow you felt at the first listen is fleeting but it will help you to understand what others sometimes are going through.
What can be considered as a positive about this song, and others like it, is that while you are alone, or feeling alone, you hear this song and you know you're not the only person who's going through a hard time. You know there's someone else in this big world who knows exactly how you feel. And then you don't feel so alone anymore.
Didn't know Jackson wrote songs for Nitty-gritty Dirt Band, they were my first concert in College sitting on the gymnasium floor and listening to Mr. Bojangles so close to them, concerts back then weren't so commercialized. I had 2 Jackson Brown albums really liked him👍 Peace✌️ and Love❤️ Gary😊
My old college roommate would ask me now and again after noticing my mood "Have you been listening to Jackson Browne again?" It's not so much that his songs are sad, but a lot of his songs just connect on a deep level. Here's some of my favorites: Sing My Songs to Me and For Everyman (should be listened together), For a Dancer, Before the Deluge, and Ready or Not.
Jackson Browne was and is the great bard of the generation that came of age during the 1960s and 70s, so it always helps in deciphering the meaning of his lyrics to understand the history of those times and what that generation of young people experienced. And, for those of us who were there and traveled roughly the same road that Jackson did, he was/is our great lyrical historian, both in personal ways and collectively. Also, he has kept the faith politically as an artist over the years, remaining humble and dedicated to the values of the peace and environmental movements that he and the rest of us came of age with. I'd like to highly, highly, highly recommended three specific songs of his that demonstrate what I'm talking about: Before the Deluge, For A Dancer, and Lives in the Balance. His catalog is vast and filled with impressive and meaningful work, but those three have long been among my very favorite Jackson Browne masterpieces.. . . And, I might add that I am not generally inclined toward celebrity worship or gushy nonsense, but Jackson is the real deal!
Jackson is one of my most favorite singer song writers. I've been a fan of him for 40 years. As far as I know is his name is pronounced Jackson Brown (the "e" is silent)! In English the sound brownie has the "ie" at the end.
It's not always easy to hear, but Jackson's lyrics are incredible. The words hit deep and true and all of that is bathed in fantastic vocals, musicians and melodies. Good stuff!
Great song! Jackson Browne started his career writing songs for other artists such as the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (he was briefly a member in 1966) & the Eagles (Browne co-wrote "Take It Easy"). But in the 70's he started recording his own songs. He had a lot of hits 70's-80's such as "The Load Out / Stay", "Doctor, My Eyes", "Rock Me On The Water", "Here Come Those Tears Again", "The Pretender", "Somebody's Baby", "Tender Is The Night" etc.
Carole King, "It's Too Late" Bonnie Raitt, "I Can't Make You Love Me" Toni Price, "I Doubt If It Does to You" Joe Henry, "She Always Goes" Sarah Harmer, "Coffee Stain" Jess Klein, "I Tried"
"Bitter"?! How about, "heartbroken"? And...he is not saying these things to the other; he's turning them into Art . Later. Having lived this song, line by painful line, about 35 years ago, and still being able to be moved to tears by it, I get to call it Art. So eloquently expressed, and so true to life - at least, when life is like this. I think it's magnificent, and aesthetically beautiful. And, BTW, I'm one who BELIEVES in "going back there', as needed. That's how the healing happens. Most of what you said, I agree with; just not the judgments. This is all about...PAIN.
The whole album is simply brilliant; like Cat Stevens, as a teenager I had to really learn the lyrics, life lessons to think about: Fountain Of Sorrow, For Dancer (how I love this song), Before The Deluge (what a violin), The Last Show... .The previous album For Everyman with the title track is already brilliant. His great voice is also so impressive live, saw two concerts here in Central Europe. Thank you for this choice!!!
I went through a divorce and this song realy hits home . I could see it in her eyes and knew she had checked out and it was over. A painful pill to swallow .It comes as a surprise but a year removed you go back and realize the signs were their and I had been asleep . How long have I been sleeping.
I agree with one the other commenters: I never thought of this as bitter; rather unbelievably sad and melancholy….resigned acceptance of a reality you desperately don’t want to see.
Loved the reaction. May I suggest two from Mr. Browne you will absolutely love - Sky Blue and Black and Shape Of A Heart. Both very emotional tunes and incredible poetry.
Yes, it is said like the color brown. Brownie is the chocolate treat. I named my dog, a Chocolate Lab, Jackson Brown without the "e." When I got him, his name was just Jack. I had to say goodbye to him recently. Great music and you guys do a wonderful job on your channel. Thank you.
The 'e' is silent. Jackson is top 10, imo, in the singer/songwriter category. btw, Jackson and Joni Mitchell were once a couple. At least one song from this album is thought to be written about Joni. That would be Fountain of Sorrow, another great song by Jackson. The Late for the Sky song is featured in the movie, Taxi Driver, staring Robert DeNiro and Jody Foster.
Jackson Browne's lyrics are meaningful when I need them, but most of the time I'm just there for the music. When I listen in this way, the words are just musical notes, no need for me to be sad.
I am a very lucky man because I found the love of my life back in 1975. We had the joy of spending 43 years together until she passed in 2018. We agreed that whoever passed first the other should move on. I tried to do that, but I could not let her go, and still love her today as much and maybe even more today. It was love at first sight for me. She is literally the love of my life. I just wait until I can be with her again. She may not be with me physically, but she is certainly with me in spirit!! She became confined to a wheelchair in 2000 and I was her care giver for 18 years and it was very tough for both of us, but I would do it again without hesitation. I still love that lovely lady with all my heart and soul!! My only true love. I was in the navy when we married and 3 days after our marriage my ship departed for 18 months. I sent her a letter every day while I was away. I think that absence made our love stronger. Enjoy your reactions so much!!
He wasn't necessarily talking to the other person and trying to hurt them as much as he was coming to terms with his own feelings and seeing how even the both of them have seen this coming and as he'd like to make it all better, it seems these feelings have hit them both and where and how do we leave it from here.
I was in college in the 70's when Jackson Brownes wife had commited sucide, and he wrote these gut wrentching beautiful songs. We loved his music but we called him, bum me out Jackson Browne.
I wish more people would listen to early Jackson Browne music. It is poetry, and IMO, some of the best music ever produced...ever.
Jackson Browne is IMO one of America’s greatest singer and songwriter with a MASSIVE catalog of songs. Still performing.
So interesting... I've never heard this song as bitter or mean. And more to come. Thank you for your comment ☺️💚
Exactly I feel the same and hope they listen to more from one of the best and observant lyricists out there.
Same. This isn’t bitterness. It’s sadness, realization, trying to grasp that it’s the end. I think it’s perfect. ❤
That whole album is a masterpiece

You know your stuff my man...two of my favs. for sure...especially Prine...no one like him...
Thank you 😊
Beauty and genius, this song made me weep this morning.
'late for the sky' was played in the de niro/foster film, 'taxi driver'!!!
Wow, never heard such an interpretation. For me it is a thing of beauty and demonstrates such insight at his very young age.
The great late David lindley on guitar…
A true master of his craft, may he rest in peace.
There are happy songs... And then, there are SAD songs. And this one is full of honest sadness.
Wait till they listen to For a Dancer.

The best wordsmith ever. No "bubblegum " for this man.
He is an amazing singer-songwriter. Still alive and still performing. Check out his song The Pretender my personal favorite but he does have a giant catalog of great music.
I heard this song for the first time just as my marriage was finished. How long was I sleeping? Love you guys, you make my life a bit easier. Thanks.

"Looking hard into your eyes/ there was nobody I'd ever known/ such and empty surprise / to feel so alone" Just f'n devastatingly poignant
Jackson Browne has a huge song register. The Eagles, Crosby stills and Nash, J,D, Souther. to mention a few have worked or sung his beautiful songs.
Jackson Browne is a great lyricist. His words hit with a punch because they are true and real. Feelings are interpreted differently by individuals. ❤
One of the greatest poet/musicians ever

I must’ve listened to this song and JB’s “Sky Blue and Black” 1000x when I was going through my divorce.

He's not necessarily saying this to someone else. He's just coming to the realization that the relationship is near it's end
Brown(e) as in the color, not the sweet dessert :) oh, and loved y'alls reaction to Jackson Browne (Load Out/Stay). Another great tune.
I went through a divorce and this song realy hits home . I could see it in her eyes and knew she had checked out and it was over. A painful pill to swallow .It comes as a surprise but a year removed you go back and realize the signs were their and I had been asleep . How long have I been sleeping.

🥰Jackson Browne is a handsome & deep poet. Love "The Pretender", "Running On Empty", even tho pop "Somebody's Baby".
The e is silent...love your reactions!!
Thank you 😊💚
he is an american poet. so great!

So sorry about the loss of your Jackson Brown.
Much love from both of us 💚
Try THE LOAD OUT/STAY, a concert video that is out of this world.

I don’t hear it as hurtful to the other person but more a sad self-reflection when the relationship ends. JB hits you hard only after the first verse!
We have all his records
Generally the "e" on the end is silent if it has no other vowel with it like "i" as it does in "brownie". So his name sounds like "Brown".
Great, thank you 👍
Jackson Browne's lyrics are meaningful when I need them, but most of the time I'm just there for the music. When I listen in this way, the words are just musical notes, no need for me to be sad.
I truely believe he is saying these things to himself, expressing his pain and recognizing this love has come to an end and it hurts....
Try more Jackson Browne! Any album, but I'm partial to his early years..and in particular this specific album...enjoy this journey.
I am a very lucky man because I found the love of my life back in 1975. We had the joy of spending 43 years together until she passed in 2018. We agreed that whoever passed first the other should move on. I tried to do that, but I could not let her go, and still love her today as much and maybe even more today. Thank you for sharing your beautiful love story. Warm wishes from Romania 💚
🇬🇧 I'm sorry for your loss sir. That was a beautiful (but sad) love story, you got me crying my eyes out here. I hope you are doing well. 🫂
@@kimcutts6153 Thank you!! I am doing well, and I hope that you are as well.
This is my favorite JB song.
It's just "brown", despite the "e". A great songwriter, composer and performer.
He is also an Eagle!😁

One of the most beautiful/heartbreaking songs ever.
Browne is pronounced without the E. Brown. A brownie is what you eat. ✌🏼😎🇺🇸
I was in college in the 70's when Jackson Brownes wife had commited sucide, and he wrote these gut wrentching beautiful songs. We loved his music but we called him, bum me out Jackson Browne.
For a Dancer and These Days.
The thing is, it's real life, everything is NOT, peaches and cream!!🤗
Sorry, it's a silent E. Crazy English at it again!
Got it. Thank you 👍😊
A reaction to Stories high and low
The bed where we both lie, double entende?
Not really following your long commentary exactly, but it is a beautiful song.
It's pronounced as Brown. Names are sometimes hard.
The e is silent, Im sure their is a reason why but I have no idea. English language ha ha.
Try My Opening Farewell
First. Pronounced Brown.
Thanks 👍
You guys suck!!! You want every song to be Bobby MckFerrin
This is the first Jackson Browne song that I did not enjoy.
BROWN. e is silent.
Got it. Thank you 👍😊
