- In this video Kevin Hicks shows you how he shoots the medieval longbow. Famous as the Warwick Bowman, for years Kevin entertained thousands of people every week at Warwick Castle, England. Now living in Canada he's taken up the longbow once again and still finds joy in shooting this beautifully simple weapon. Medieval history at its best.

Had the pleasure of seeing this gentleman demonstrate his skill at Warwick Castle nearly 20 years ago. He put on an extremely interesting and informative performance. So glad to see he’s still at it.

How much to make me a Long Bow
A backstop like that, must be a pro.
I love the factual way he says "it's just a bow", people have such a habit of romaticizing the bow and attributing such a mystic to all the various aspects that sometimes are so far from the facts.
Very true. We live in a modern world of spcecilisation, where engineers and scientists from around the world constantly design, test and discuss until we arrive at the most efficient solutions. We can explain every little component of a car or a smartphone.
In pre-industrial times, every blade, every plow, every wagon and cart would have been different, just becase that's the best solution that the maker could think of, and it seemed to work out. It wasn't because he necessrily understood the subtle chemistry and physics involved in every design decision.
Indeed. Nevertheless, my warbow can perform amazing feats in the kitchen.

Kevin, I saw you shoot at Warwick castle in 2001. Your PA and microphone stopped working so you gathered everyone in closer to hear you tell tales of bow men in battle. It was magical, you are a great story teller and it was the highlight of the day. Over 20 year later I shoot with my children and have made my own longbow. Its only a laminate one instead of Yew, but it all stems from that day at Warwick castle. Thank you.

I'm an infantry veteran and took up archery 2 years ago, one of the old guys in the club let me use his long bow and I fell in love with it, been shooting long bow ever since, I know 2 years aint long but it's been the "something" I was missing since getting out the Army.
I can really understand that and am with you 100% 👍🏻
Same here, left the army in 2016 and went with a friend to the archery range and fell in love with his pacific yew bow. Been shooting my own since then. I’ve met a few veterans at the local range near me. Kevin definitely sounds like a veteran we all used to know!

I can relate to the long bow experience. They are my favourite to use. Though I like a gentle recurve too.
His grouping with those arrows is insanely impressive, and rather terrifying to be quite honest. Might not have hit the head, but he certainly took all of the guys standing around his target!

I've been shooting Olympic recurve for almost 6 months now and it's very difficult sport even with all the modern hardware. So many variables in the bow and technique. Makes me really appreciate his skill in archery.

I competed in archery in college in 1978 and 1979. In 1979 I was the 3rd best female collegiate archer in Southern California, and the 11th best female Intercollegiate Archer in the US.
I don't shoot anymore but am still proud of what I accomplished more than 40 years ago.
My bow is a recurve take-down bow with maple limbs and a rosewood body with a 35# draw weight. Very attractive looking, in my opinion.

I'd bet that if you grab a bow again, you'll shoot just as well. It happened to me with a 20 year span, was quite amazed. Americans call these things "like riding a bike" haha! And it's true 😀 Have a good one ma'am!

I'm the same. I took up field archery 3 years ago and started with a 30lb bow. I then bought a 35lb bow, but I just keep coming back to the 30lb one as I like using it. It can comfortably hit any of the 40 targets on our course from the nearest at about 7 yards to the furthest at about 55 yards. My longest shot so far with it is about 100 yards. No need to go for anything heavier than 30lb, and I can comfortably shoot with it all day long.
I've been shooting for around 25 years and shoot a 120lb bow; I never knew how to use a bow stringer until this video. Always done it the old fashioned way
The way he re-strings his bow is just absolute genius! The less stress the better for the bow.

I have been an archer since a young teen, and still love it so much, was so good for helping back injury as well, and a great excuse to hunt even not caring whether to actually score a deer. Thanks for making these videos. I really enjoy watching you shoot. I picked up my first longbow last year. I shot it two to three times a week for about 4 hours at a time until it broke. I got my second a few months ago. Your videos have been a big help in learning to shoot it. I always loved the way they looked and the history associated with them. Then I found out I'm descended from a Welsh archer who served Jasper Tudor and I had to get one. Looking forward to seeing more from you sir.

Spears and. Clubs were common, and so was no weapk. At all
Swords werent because they required training
swords are deeply personal weapons, spears arn't. As long as you've got your spear and you're next to your mates (who also have spears) you're doing your job on the battlefield, swords self defense weapons when your battlefield weapons fail you.
At certain periods during the Hundred Year War young men in the villages were required by law to practice with the bow regularly.

For once someone who lived their craft that learned instinctually. Also shooting in real army style of the day. You gave us a close to real feel how the archers of the day had to operate. Image a 1000 bowmen rain hell all at once. If you took your 15 and multiples it by 1000. In one minute 15,000 arrows pelted the enemy . Simply amazing !

This gentleman inspired me to learn the English longbow as a teacher. When COVID hit here in the US, we were reading Henry V by Shakespeare. Instead of being discouraged to learn, I lectured while shooting the longbow and it made the story of Agincourt come alive for them and for me. Such a wholesome skill. Wonderful work to keep such rich history alive! God, Harry, England, and Saint George! 🏴
Well if you studied Henry V you must have loved this, have you seen Keneth Branaghs version by Americas most famous playwright? For Shakespeare is as American as he is English, he wrote as you know long before America was settled by the pilgrim fathers, he belongs to all the English speaking nations in equal measure.
During WW2 Magna Carta was kept at Fort Knox Kentucky, because it must never have fallen into enemy hands. These things are invaluable.

I own a Bickerstaffe longbow and out of the bows I own it is definitely my favourite. It is a sweet shooter with absolutely no kick whatsoever. I love it so much more than any of my synthetic ones. Hubby and I shoot whenever we can weather willing, we are both Berkshire UK born and bred so it seems only right. It is only a 50 pounder but that's how I like it because I can shoot all day and not mess up my shoulder. I'm with you on the left hand glove definitely after having to pull splinters of feather fletch out of my bowhand once. Once was enough! I'm only a 5' 2 shortygirl, my bow is taller than me. Love your channel, keep your string dry, your aim true and the content coming! ❤🎯

People generally overlook what the French did with the Yew tree. When the weather turned colder in the 15th century on, the yew tree in Britain didn't grow well enough to make bows, but it started growing much better in France. Lovely furniture. Just lovely.

I remember history classes from high school where a teacher would would mull through the subjects in the book. Imagine learning history from people who have an actual passion for the subject and know how to pass it on. If I would have met this guy as a teenager, I would be interested what he would have to say.

Very impressive and informative, sir. I agree about using the bow you like. I used to own a 50lb fiberglass bow and loved shooting it. Friends would try to talk me into using a compound bow, but I never could get the same comfort level I had with my old bow.

Hey Kevin Thanks for another great video. I shoot compound bows but I’ve always wanted to try a recurve, longbow. I have a idea for a video you could do. I would love to learn about the medieval archery tournaments you spoke of in your video. What where they like, what did they shoot at and what were the prizes? Also you could add any videos of you competing in your tournaments. Talk about how they work and the prizes maybe compare the two from old and new. Thank you for all the great videos. I’ve always been fascinated with the medieval history of the UK. Being from the US we don’t really have a long history. It’s good to finally find someone who really knows what he’s talking about and explains it in a way that’s easy for everyone to understand.

Just got back into shooting my longbows after a few years lay off. My new assistant in work loves all the History and he's Welsh. I have just started him off shooting my old 40lb Bickerstaffe bow that is Hickory backed lemonwood with a green heart core. A really sweet bow to shoot. I'm not particularly good but really enjoy it. Most of my bows are Hickory backed osage but I do have a yew bow that is nice. That bow of yours shoots beautifully, really sweet. Love all your videos!

Same here. Shot competitively (olympic recurve) for a couple of years, but except for a home made bow, I never held nor shot a proper longbow. Need to change that one day. 😊

Take a look at the target area, this is ONE bowman, now allow your imagination to picture the scene with HUNDREDS of equally skilled bowmen, must've been absolutely terrifying for those guys who were facing them.
Kind of reminds me of the kind of slaughter that took place on the battlefields of France during the first world war!
Yes Stuart.........After the very heavy bombardment by us British on the German lines all our soldiers would have to do is to walk slowly across no-man's land and claim the ground. No one thought that the Germans would be hiding underground and after the British barrage they came out and slaughtered thousands!! Yes, Kevin was very accurate on that speed shoot and a few thousand like him would be truly terrifying!!

Great job drawing a 90 lb bow and shooting straight. The strongest traditional bow I've used is a 70 lb longbow for hunting.
I think a 90 lb bow could be classified as a war bow 🎯
Thanks. It was about 9lb when I first had it, but I'm sure it may have lost some poundage since then, still, it's very sweet to shoot.
wait, is longbow weightage different from recurve and compound weightage? because I shoot a 24lb recurve and the highest any of my club members have gone is my coach with a 38lb compound
@@vihaandas4346 No, except recurves and compounds tend to shoot fast and maybe a little straighter trajectory?

@@vihaandas4346 It can vary depending on draw for example a draw to face or across the chest draw to gain a bit extra poundage if the bow can handle it. My Ash self bow is about 60 but 69 when chest drawn.

It's interesting to see that even though you shoot at about half draw, uses a less poundage bow and are apparently more comfortable with nocking the arrow to the left side of the bow, your drawing technique still shows the hunched tendencies towards that of

Hi Mark, thanks for your comment. Bowyers and fletchers travelled with the army and arrows were stored by their hundreds of thousands and supplied to the bowmen by youngsters from the baggage train. So youngsters would run to the bowmen with arms full of arrows to resupply them, even in the midst of battle - hard to imagine isn't it.

Having lost quite a number of my precious, beloved home made arrows and bolts I’m hesitant now to
go out there. It’s incredible how, in a straight line and within view , shafts just disappear ….I’ve been advised to get a metal detector ! Is there no modern electronic beacon answer etc ? Anyway, love the video collection so far.

I've had hundred of arrows, from Denver to Sydney and Agincourt to Warwick, lying just a few centimetres under the ground, I've learned to no longer regard my arrows with love and just treat them as ammunition.

Yes, literally that - I shoot by instinct, both eyes open, looking over the arrow rather than along it, and focussing on the target. One useful tip is to adjust your feet just slightly if you need to, rather than adjusting your arm/aim.
The snow is on the ground for winter now, but I plan to do some additional archery films in the spring. Happy shooting!
