      Same here, I think there should be a warning before this moment. Seeing a living creature (human, animal, whatever) gradually degrading is so terrifying. I lost my kitty a year ago and still miss her so much. I wasn’t just ready to see Hina like that...

    Hina was literally the cutest being. The way she crawled on the floor with that tiny diaper on is just terrifyingly heartbreaking. She didnt deserve that... but see it that way: The little life she had, she spent with owners who would absolutely love her to death! That matters.

    A cat is not a placeholder for a baby. It is a living being with its own feelings and personality that can and will love you. Anybody who thinks that you can just give up an animal when you have a child is disgusting and should have neither a pet nor a baby because that is not a healthy mind-set for raising and caring for either.

    • @KiraHunter2310
      @KiraHunter2310 8 ปีที่แล้ว +101

      +Your Wayward Destiny There must be a good reason to re home any animal. I would only re home if my animal would not get on with my child or would be attacking them otr others and training did not work. It is not always a bad thing to re home! Saying people should not have kids just beucase they re home an animal is not right.

    • @YourWaywardDestiny
      @YourWaywardDestiny 8 ปีที่แล้ว +170

      Kira Hunter The sad truth is that there's usually not a good reason. In general, going in the the idea of "Well, baby is on the way, I don't need THIS anymore." is not a good mentality. Maybe there are exceptions, but I've seen too many selfish people just abandon animals because they simply don't know how to love more than one thing-- themselves. It'd more of a rule of thumb, than a law, I guess.

Animals are just animals to some people and they're not horrible for it. Different people do different things. In Vietnam they eat cats and dogs and all kinds of other animals considered pets to other and the Vietnamese people aren't disgusting. It's just the way they do things

      We adopted a street cat called GUS for the first 10 months he just hid and only came out for food but now he comes right up to me for a fuss and when i get my bike out he brushes up against it and waits for me to leave before going inside . He was one of eight kittens that was born in a block that was going to be demolished and was the only one alive when we found him. His fur is white and a extremely faded ginger and one of his ears is half cut off.

      I'm only about 9 minutes in and I had no idea how strict the rules are for pet adoption, they're practically watching you prior to the adoption and even when you get your pet. I'm from the UK and if you want a pet you literally just walk in to a shop as you said and fill out forms and take them home. They have never asked to inspect your residence before adoption or ask for pictures after the adoption, it amazes me how certain countries have different ways of doing things. This was very informative, thanks Rachel! ^-^

    • @OddsceneEmma
      @OddsceneEmma 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      +Ruki's Sexy Garbage I'm from the UK too and I've have nothing but issues trying to adopt, buying is normally not an issue but adopting is such a pain. There has been tonnes of forms filled out then the adoption place will visit your home and check everything, garden, space etc, how often you are home & a million more things! Then it's either a yes or no, if yes then you start the process of which cat/dog you want then they'll judge if they are suitable for you. More so for dogs then cats though! I always find so many full shelters because they are too selective with owners with perfectly good conditions, even if you owned a dog before they most likely will still say no if you don't fit into strict criteria! (This relates mostly to the RSPCA and other large adoption organisations)

    In Romania because of stupid irresponsible owners we have hundreds of stray dogs and cats on the street. Adopting from shelters are completely free. But you can just pick up cats or dogs off the street. My two cats were off the streets when they were kittens. My dog was legally adopted. Not my cats though. There are a lot of abused animals on the street here...organizations are working hard to rescue them and sterilize them.

That was so awful doing this to cats just to get money is disgusting, sadly there are a lot of awful people on this earth doing awful things without us knowing & that makes me more sad, to know that there are abused cats or animals makes me so stressed, some humans are simply disgusting.

    • @halogenn_
      @halogenn_ 6 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      People do that a lot and its absolutely disgusting. They breed and overbreed animals. I knew of people who kept the females in cages, and used them like a damn machine. Bringing in a male as soon as she was ready concieve more babies ( cats and dogs ) and then taking the babies away. The babies that had defects, no matter how small, or didn´t have the right color were killed and thrown out. People like that deserve to be cut open slowly and have all their organs removed, while they´re awake. I hope those people die a slow and extremely painful death and that no one misses them or grieves for them.

      mimei Well, babies don't know how to treat cats and can very easily stress out the cat. I can imagine babies grabbing a cat or pulling tails. If you're thinking what I'm thinking, the cat will react and you'll have a bleeding baby. An adoption website I went on recommended not adopting a cat until kids reach a certain age.

      There's a constant myth (at least in America) that cats will smother babies. Something about milk on the baby's breath and the cat wants it. When I was first trying to adopt a cat I wanted a ragdoll. I went to a rescue, but I changed my mind because they said if I moved I'd have to give back the cat to them. I can understand they want what's best for the cat, but if I paid $300 to adopt a cat it's coming with me. It worked out anyway because I got Louis from a local shelter and he is much sweeter than that ragdoll anyway.

      You have to meet them at some point so it's not really possible to pretend you're not Japanese. That'd also be difficult if you don't speak Japanese perfectly natively, which I don't think is very common for foreigners who didn't grow up in Japan.

    I had the same experience years ago on Satoya Boshu... We (my Japanese husband and I) were trying to adopt a "special needs" (not super special needs, basically she just had watery eyes and needed eye drop medicine administered daily), we did the back and forth for about a month or two and had an interview/trial scheduled.
    Eventually, though, we ended up getting passed up by the owner on her because another interested couple that showed up after us, mainly because the person was worried I was going to leave the country, same thing as you guys. This was about 6-7 years ago. My husband and I are still in Japan and have no plans on leaving.
    Fortunately (or unfortunately, because this was also a ridiculous situation), we did end up being able to adopt two cats from a neighbor. We had "gomi toban"/"trash watch duty" with this neighbor who (we later found out) was a pet hoarder who never spayed/neutered her cats, and let the cats roam the neighborhood, which meant the female cats would continually get pregnant and have litters.
    We didn't know all this until later, but anyways we got tot talking to this neighbor during trash duty and the topic somehow got to how we had been trying to adopt this cat but were turned down at the end and how we were bummed about it, to which she replied, "Oh! One of my cats just had a litter of six. I can bring them over and feel free to take as many as you want." So we ended up taking two and we love them so much! (They are still genki and the best fur babies ever!) But like the story of Hina, it was irresponsible that they were even born to begin with, and three of the cats never found homes.
    The neighbor ended up doing what appeared to be a "yo-nige" (like when someone leaves their house suddenly and moves in the middle of the night and are gone the next day), and left like half of her cats to just fend for themselves, including at least two (but possibly all three) from the litter that didn't get adopted!!! SO MUCH RAGE OMG. Also we found out later that our two cats were only 3 weeks old (much younger than they should have left their mom) and they came with fleas and stuff because they never got proper care/check-ups/vaccinations. So it was very costly to get rid of the fleas and get them a good bill of health, and additionally, unlike other cities in Japan, our city did not subsidize any of the spay/neutering costs.
    Sorry this is so TL;DR but I feel like the strict adoption process actually encourages a lot of cat ladies/fosters to become cat hoarders, and is biased towards a lot of people who shouldn't even be owning cats to begin with. It certainly doesn't help get cats adopted to good families as soon as they should be. (Of course the U.S. system has its own problems, too.)

    I'm watching this in August 2019 and I LOVE that you have three wonderful cats now. They are similar to my three fur babies - I have an overweight one who can be a turd, a small cat who is a sweetheart, and one who is a very large orange cat who is the boss (he's part Maine Coon). I love them all to the moon and back (good and bad, just like family). I'm going to go play with them now and give them extra loves.

    I had a friend who got rid of her cat because she didn't think it could make the trip from California to Florida. She went on about how it had a disease that caused ulcers when stressed...but she didn't think it was stressful for the cat to be given away. Then there was another woman who got a dog for her kids even though her husband was waiting on orders. They got orders to Japan, and she gave the dog away. I told her what I thought about that decision, and she stopped talking to me...but I saw pictures online through a mutual friend. Apparently she'd managed to adopt another dog...in Japan...and a few years later when new orders came, she gave that one away.
    If you or your spouse work in a career field that can require relocation, especially international relocation, you need to prepare accordingly. I always had a plan for my dog, including who would check on him if moving him required quarantine.
    I'm glad you have the cats you have now, and I'm sorry that you went through all of this. I wish people would stop seeing pets as belongings, and more as family members. Those of us who truly care, and the animals, are suffering :(

      Wow. I can confirm that the drive from Florida to California is not too stressful for a cat with illness. I picked up a kitten from the street with ataxia and gave her an amazing life. She lived well until her condition deteriorated. However, this drive which I have taken 5 times, was done with a dog, bearded dragon, and cat. The little kitten found it calming. A very nice drive.

    It's incredibly insulting and ironic for that one person to have the gal to say, "You're a foreigner, you're going to get rid of the cat" when it's a non-foreigner in this case being the one who is 'getting rid of the cat'. What does being foreign matter anyway as long as the cat goes to a home where it's going to be well taken care of and loved? Clearly you and Jun are wonderful cat parents, any cat would be so lucky to have you as an owner! Hopefully other people will be able to see that, good luck on your current search.

    Here in sweden, I volunteer as a foster home for a local "shelter". Its the same way here as you described in your video, we don't have physical shelters with animals but instead the organisation has foster homes such as myself that take care of the animals before they become adopted. This is wonderful for the animals since they are way happier in a home than in a cage obviously, and as a student i'm not ready to get a permanent pet but i love cats so its a win-win! :)
    Alltho here we aren't as strict as it seems in Japan. The trial period for a pet to be at their new home is 1 to 3 months instead of just one week. Also, we never visit the home of the new owner but we do have slight contact over the phone and email, also they visit the cat at the foster home before adopting it! We reserve the right to not adopt cats to people we find unfit for them. (for example if a cat is really shy and anxious, a home with lots of children might not be ideal)
    Also (unlike in America) here in Sweden shelters, such as the one i volunteer in, usually have a policy of "never to have an animal put down unless its been damaged physically or mentally beyond repair". In other words, if a cat is healthy and mentally stable and it wont get adopted, its never ever put down. It simply stays in their foster homes! (this never happens tho, the longest a cat is ever in their foster home is 5-6 months TOPS)

      Katthem/hundstallet? :p I adopted from a katthem in Stockholm, and it was crazy strict. The cat was with a foster family, not just in the "shelter". First we had to have a minimum of five meetings with the cat over two weeks. If we couldn't manage in two weeks, we had to start again. (felt super weird to keep going to a strangers home, haha) Then we had to bring in invoices from paychecks and out apartment contract, showing we had a first hand contract and could afford a cat. They also wanted pictures of our apartment. But I guess our pictures weren't sufficient, since someone actually came over and looked at it. My boyfriend, who's Swedish, had to do *all* at the paperwork, etc. since I'm Canadian. They wouldn't adopt to both of us, just him. We didn't have any kind of trail period though, which I found odd. But thankfully, the cat was a perfect fit! :p

      Hayley Goodwin I'm so glad you decided to adopt a kitty and that he/she was right for you!
      Wow, thats reaally strict! The "djurhem" I foster cats with just want new owners to visit the cat once and tell them a little about themselves so we know if the cat is a good fit. Then as i said, theres a trial period of 2 weeks or a month.
      I'm glad they care about the cats but thats a bit overkill imo!

    • @mafatimadechavez6276
      @mafatimadechavez6276 7 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      For that having a baby, sometimes couple have to give their pet to those who can take care of them better especially if the cat gets jealous of the baby especially if the cat is the only one in the house. That lady probably seen one with the same experience. Jealous cat can be very dangerous to a new born baby especially if the owner does not know what to do in that situation since the baby requires lot of attention and some attention of her owner will be lessen for him that the cat will consider the baby as an enemy and threat for his owners attention. One of our cat is like that when we decided to adopt another cat for him to have a playmate but he never accepted him. He became very jealous and dangerous, even for us, that any method of making him play of make him close to younger cat does not work. He suddenly just disappear one day while we are out. 😢😢😢

      ChihakuTheFolf In many countries of Asia, it is common for a family to want to have a child eventually (mostly because the culture they are raised in or pressured by elders to continue the family bloodline), and there are still families that would abandon a pet just because they got a new born baby (again ''advice" by elders or they are just worried about the baby without doing further research). But things are changing especially among the youngsters and many would try to convince their parents to keep the pet.

    This is the bad in Japan.
    Most people in Japan buy a pet in a pet store and pay 1000's of dollars (100.000+ yen) to buy a pet and treat it like an 'alive toy" instead of an "Family member".
    They will take care of it and when they get bored of it or when it does 1 thing wrong, they throw it away like a "consumable item"...
    Also when the pet doesn't get sold in the store within a certain amount of time, they get transferred to a room where all the other 'unwanted items' are.
    And then when that room is full, they transfer them all together into a GASS room to gass them to death. (slow and painful death)
    This is something i am very very ashamed of in Japan.
    Especially the stickers you see on cars sometimes in Tokyo makes me feel very sad . (The "Toy Dog on Board" stickers).
    I hope someday Asia will evolve into understanding that all animals can think, have a conscience and have a soul and that getting another animal in your family,
    is like ADOPTING someone else's baby...

    My heart goes out to the two of you for the amount of hardships you have gone through in order to adopt a cat. Hina's story is tragic, and I can't understand how a person can breed a cat that is likely to suffer as much as she did. And at that meeting thing, I feel so bad for that poor scared kitty, and I can't believe that woman could say things like that to you. I like to think I'm usually a pretty calm person, but I could not put up with any person making such assumptions about me, especially with such a personal topic. You two should not have had to go through something like this. But, as Rachel said, no country has perfect animal adoption systems, so I guess I can't say much.
    I wish you the very best of luck in adopting another cat. I'm sure you'll find a lovely kitty who will be a great friend to you and Haku! You deserve it

We have adopted all of the cats we have had in the past but when we bought my dog I was really scared this was going to happen to me. Thankfully I found a responsible breeder that was kennel club approved and everything has worked out, it's been 7 years now and thankfully he's still healthy. It truly breaks my heart to know that if I'd have been even slightly less lucky I could have been in your position...that my happy little Yuki could have be irreparably disabled or died like your sweet kitty. Honestly how can anyone be so heartless as to intentionally cause pain to a harmless little creature and the family that gets attached? *sigh* for what it's worth I'm sorry about Hina.

    I couldn't imagine my life without a kitty in it. It's a real shame that adoption is so hard, specially for you because you are foreign. It's so sad that you had no choice but to try a pet store, and then even sadder that you ended up with a kitty you loved so much and you had to watch her die a horrible death. But she was lucky to go to you because I'm sure you gave her an amazing life and did all you could for her. I wish you luck in finding a companion for your wild boy. My cat was also very hyper and bitey like that, but as she's grown up she's finally starting to become more cuddly. Boys get super duper mellow, so he may end up being a lap cat soon enough. :)

    Actually I went through a similar process in adopting one of my cats here in Southern California. First we emailed and talked on the phone a few times, then I went to a petstore on adoption day to actually meet her, then the shelter head came to my apartment with the cat with the understanding that I would not be adopting her if the place did not pass inspection.

    ...it makes me furious too how a lot of them assume that foreigners will leave the country and leave their pets... :(
    I hope you'll find a wonderful cat who will be a great companion with Haku too!!! My condolences for Hina, such a sweet cat does not deserve to have been bred by such irresponsible breeders

      +Kumiko L I agree, although it shouldn't have been born to suffer like that.. but I'm sure it lived a very happy life with them and still tried to live with all it's little adorable might. It's breeders like this, that shouldn't be allowed to do these things.. It's just like anywhere really.. so many people with no knowledge go around doing stupid things, or perhaps they do but wanting to get the money and " joke on you" sort of thing.. one day.. one day these kind of people will get what they deserve.. each and every one. Karma in a way.

      +Makkaru112 True, Rachel and Jun are lovely cat owners, and I agree that Hina must have made wonderful cat memories until the end. And I really hope karma gets them! They are too selfish and greedy....

      They'll get it one day. Even if not in the way we might expect. With most crimes and people.. might sound extreme but usually makes the rest never dare do the same again. do to them what they do to others. in this case, animals. Dunno what to do in this case since i have a hard time imagining this one. but I think you get what I'm trying to say here. lol Some people just don't learn is why some things like this are done. Although I'm very particular on who I would even deign put judgement on people.. only those causing serious trouble. sometimes just jailing somebody doesn't teach them anything. y'know? they will just wait and do it again. x__X

    I know it may seem a little shady, but could you get a cat through Jun's parents? They go through the adoption process and then give you the cat? They wouldn't have the same struggles as you, I'm sure.

    As someone who worked at a shelter before, I find it good when they are picky with who is going to adopt the pet, because you want to make sure it won't return and has a good life. But what you described in the video is too much of being picky! And as shown, it scares possible adopters away and forces them to buy pets from the pet shop(that often come from sketchy places like puppy mills)and wind up with sick animals. Wonder if you have it easier when you go to one of the shelters that is owned by the australian and/or canadian people? Wish you luck!

    Where I live shelters do do house checks especially for adopting dogs, which I think is a good thing because there is a dog fighting problem here. People adopt free/cheap dogs to train for fighting or cats for bait which is just heart wrenching to think about. But as for the rest I don't think shelters do all that here, I do see how it can put people off adopting which is a huge shame.
    I remember following Hinas story as you guys posted her progress. It's so heartbreaking to think about what she went through. I'm so sorry you and Jun had to go through it, I can't imagine dealing with something like that. On the day my cat went missing, I was inconsolable.
    I hope you guys will find the perfect addition to your cat family soon! You really deserve it. 💖

      I agree, there are a lot of warning here in America to not give away your pet for free because some people will take advantage of it and abuse the pet. Even if the way in the video might seem strict it's still better than the alternative.

    This was so sad. D: I live in a tourist city over run with cats. So adopting them isn't an issue. I have 10 cats. Mostly from picking them up from the streets or finding them abandoned. I have a himalayan persian that was abandoned because of health issues and after a year of health struggles shes going strong. Shes in love with my brother. Even where I work theres about 15 cats living there. Most are sweet and the visiters love them but its really sad. I see all these animals everyday that could use a home and medical care, but theres only one shelter.

    I cried, I'm sorry you had to go through that. It really got me when you said about how Hina was the sweetest cat, and she should never have been born. It breaks my heart that there are people out there that would hurt an animal for money. A living breathing creature for paper that holds no value without words. Im seriously in love with animals and I really don't understand how *anyone* could do such a thing. I'm so sorry about Hina, and for you and Jun. I hope it is better now that you've got Haku. The impression I'm getting is that the methods you mentioned are more like an open adoption, where the prior owner still has a sense of agency over the cat. In the US, whenever we adopted a dog it was more like a closed adoption, where the owners completely don't want the dog at all. :( ughhh.

    "Ridiculous lady with the heart boob shirt!"
    Omg, I died laughing because as soon as you said we lost out to...I knew that's what you were gonna say because it's EXACTLY what I would've said!
    Stupid caricature lady with her stupid hair, I hope the cat smears her makeup face all over!
    And I'm so so heartbroken over Hina :(
    That's just so awful and unethical and I cannot believe that in a country with such exceedingly strict standards on pet adoption they allow breeders to proceed without ramifications for being outwardly cruel.
