Just gotta say, at least he wasn't aggressive despite not liking being touched by strangers. He's a very beautiful dog! I hope he gets used to strangers sooner rather than later.
More than anything he just seemed anxious and vaguely sceptical.
@@ConvincingPeople
That's because she knows enough to only do the little bit she did and not try to touch him or rush him. If she had, there's a very good chance she would have been severely injured. They're high risk and prone to biting people outside their immediate family. Lots of insurance companies and cities/towns have classified them as dangerous.
I think Akitas are very owner attached. It is built in that they are not friendly with strangers. They have both a strong prey drive and are exceptionally protective of their families. Not good with kids. No surprise that this dog was not happy about grooming. Not good with dog parks.
@user-ii9ej2iq1s To be fair, strong prey drive doesn't have anything to do with whether they are good with people. Huskies are off the charts friendly with all humans, children, strangers, etc. But they also have a very high prey drive. If a squirrel gets in your yard it is probably a dead squirrel. If a kid gets in your yard they get kisses. There is a reason she doesn't have problems with huskies biting. That said, Akita are one of those breeds I would never own. They do bite. They were breed not to like strangers. I don't want to deal with that safety issue.
@@Lucinda_Jackson You're thinking of American Akitas. Japanese Akitas are barely known at all in the US.
I’ve never seen a dog with a more appropriate angry eyebrow marking 😂

my old roommate has a boxer that has "eyeliner" markings that make him look VERY sad all the time 🤣🤣🤣 we would joke all the time that all anyone has to do is throw some mud on him, take a picture, and use his naturally pathetic face in an ASPCA commercial. he would play the perfect neglected/abused dog!!

He actually did a really really good job of voicing his dystain for the situation, without escalating. You could tell he really wanted to. His impulse control is good. There were some points you could see his inner dialogue...no I can't bite, I'm not allowed to bite, I know I can't bite, biting is bad, don't bite.
Yes he was actually a very good boy for an akita

Every once in a while there is a split second when his face says “that feels nice” but then he remembers that he doesn’t like strangers 😂
I was going to mention the same! Even after the bath he had a couple of times where his expression seemed like the dryer felt good, but he didn't want to concede that! 😄
I think he didn't like the blow dryer the second time because of your very scary and highly suspicious bee keeper hat.
It is indeed.
"Where did your face go? Where face?!"
I was going to say that! That’s the only difference I see and it’s pretty major, especially when you’re already scared of people I think 🥹😭
Amazing someone brought you a dog to groom that didn't like to be touched by strangers. You handled that well.
Yeah why even bring him to a groomer when they knew the groomer wouldn’t be able to properly groom him? They surely could have bathed the dog themselves at home. Or maybe they’re hoping the Akita gets used to her and this is just the first session?
I think they brought him to her because she is such a good detective. She always figures out how to deal with the dog, and the info helps out his regular groomer.
@@jscho8674 could be, she does a very good job
@@nommyyt Yeah, maybe she's the first professional groom, she knows how to deal with the difficult ones.

What I learned from this video: socialization is very important, especially for Akitas. He's a beautiful dog though!
All Japanese dogs descend from hunting dogs. They only trust their master. One hunter, one dog is the traditional MATAGI style hunting. They're never kept indoors, they were never on a leash, and they don't need grooming. They were never pets.
He would like to speak with the manager.

@@jani4460😂😂😂😂😂
i feel like this would be a good video to talk about boundaries with strangers and dogs, not all dogs are meant to be approached with the intent to be touched (especially service dogs), or approached at all, but all dogs are meant to be walked and taken outside to get exercise when applicable, and many people may not understand that, and end up allowing children and themselves to be at risk of being snapped at or bit because 'oh big soft fluffy doggy do no harm to their owner so im safe too'.
i hope one day in the future you approach this subject, seeing that you have such a reach to the community. :)
I think it's very important that parents teach their children how to approach a dog and it's a change I'm seeing happening in real time in my area. My dog is kind of fearful but not aggressive and she's not used to kids, but I can read her bodylanguage pretty well, so if a child asks if they can pet her and Coco doesn't actively shy away from them, I say "of course you can and I'll show you how best to pet her".
Most dogs don't enjoy being petted directly on their head or a hand coming down from above, so I do my best to teach any kid who wants to talk to my dogs on how best to approach a strange dog.
And I think the key part is to ALWAYS ASK before you attempt to pet a dog, in general. Not all dogs are friendly, some dogs are reactive and some dogs are working dogs. So, unless a dog is visibly wearing a work harness and you obviously shouldn't approach a working dog, ask if you can pet them.
So, sooooo well said. And my exact thoughts as I watched the video.
All dogs need to be able to be groomed.
Every day I am more and more grateful for Zuko. Purebred Akita Inu, will cuddle and play with other people and dogs with no compunction. I have never seen him NOT lean into strangers, lick their hands, and ask for belly rubs.
He's just a big dummy.
He’s gorgeous ❤️ xxx

Cheeto would be such a fantastic name for him!!!!! I love it.

He looks like a huge red panda! What a dorky cutie pie❤
I think he looks a bit like a big fox though.
You hit the nail right on the head.... the whole time I am thinking he is reminding me of something, but cannot put my finger on it! 😂
I thought he looked like someone had scaled a Shiba-Inu up to Akita-Inu size...even has the little white "eyebrow" patches.
Giant red panda lol
He’s so gorgeous ❤️
What a good boy 😭 He literally hated every minute and made it known but was honestly well behaved from what we saw. But I do attribute a lot of that to her reading his body language and respecting his boundaries too.
Yep, he's such a beauty tho, probably the cutests akita I've everseen!
I have a Japanese Akita Inu I just adopted from a rescue. She is very sweet but doesn’t like being forced to do anything. I give her time to move herself where I want her and give chicken jerky which loves as reward. She doesn’t like strange men cornering her but she was in a shelter so she may have been handled too roughly.
I think he’s afraid of your bee keepers hat. He looked at it several times.
It could be that he couldnt see her face well either so it made him more wary
Much side-eye of the hat, fur sure.

He was pretty well behaved actually. Didn't like being groomed but was content enough to put up with it.
Oh boy Aki LOL, normally I would never laugh at a dog in distress but I think Aki is about a bunch of drama,, likes the dryer, doesn't like the dryer, won't let you touch him but then he'll eat out of your hand, hey Aki get it together man LOL
The dogs comments are just too funny. But your really patient with love ❤️
You are amazing Venessa. There are few groomers that would ever deal with a dog that has “don’t touch me issues” including me! I’m sooo impressed.
He is so adorable, but no touchy-touchy same time 😂
I know shibas are stubborn but you add the akitas feisty nature to the mix 😂 oh boy he's still a cutie though
Akita Inu is not a mix of Akita and Shiba. Inu just means dog, and is used commonly at the end of both breed names.
@@ashdragon4000 didn't know that thanks dude always cool to learn something new everyday
@@ashdragon4000 That's correct. The AKC recognizes the Japanese Akitainu as a specific breed...and "Japanese Akitainu" is the correct name. They aren't particularly affectionate and they don't much like strangers or other dogs. Other than that, they're great! 🙂
Aki: "Low and behold, another groomer who thinks she's in charge..."🤨
thus the importance of socializing your dog as much as you can. Bravo to you for doing the best you can... perhaps next time he will be better.
Japanese dogs don't socialize. They're bred as hunting and guard dogs for thousands of years, and they only obey the master. They don't need grooming either. They need exercise and fish.
I’m glad you where able to make it out of there with out a scratch
I love hearing the song of his people in Japanese.
That’s one beautiful but imposing dog, good thing he shows his grievances without aggressiveness.
That was extremely brave! Especially crouching in the shower. Holy moley!
He seemed surprisingly gentle for how much he was griping.
He looks so sad sitting in the bath, like a cat caught in the rain 😂
It’s tickling, the fact that he’s visibly frowning.😅
The ATTITUDE on this little man!
I'm sure this goes without saying, but his owners need to be told that a prong collar on a fearful dog will only make him MORE anxious and reactive. 🤦♀️
Not true. Every dog is different and blanket, inaccurate statements like that discourage people from trying all of the options, including the one that may make all the difference for their dog. My dog absolutely thrived on a prong collar, and I’m so grateful her trainer urged us to try it. I passed it on to my neighbor, and it changed his Doberman’s world. Didn’t work for my current dog-who goes to her happy place with her e-collar.
@@pysvtfa4 please point me to a case study where inflicting pain on a dog helped out to overcome anxiety and fear.
@@pysvtfa4 Learned helplessness =/= a "happy place."
I was thinking the exact same thing. Pretty much all CREDIBLE scientific research has shown that prong collars and the like MAY correct certain behaviours in the short term, but do more mental harm and cause distress to the dog which can have greater impact down the line.
@@draculasdaughter36 The thing is... Dogs aren't natural born buddies. They see us as their own kind but on two legs. As descendants from wolves they are animals that are used to hierarchy. While supporting them with food and, to encourage wanted behavior with treats, they also need to learn what not to do and that their owners are pack leaders and highest in their 'packs' hierarchy.
Just saying no to unwanted behavior and stuffing them with treats doesn't work as in pack dogs/wolves will probe with pack leaders how far they can push boundaries. An alpha wolf will try to warn the offending wolf with sounds and mimicking but eventually, if they push things further, it will get physical. As a dog owner one needs to be in charge and the unquestioned boss. The dog will see a strong owner as a good pack leader.
Just giving a dog food, scratches and toys will let it think of you as it's serve. It won't accept commands from its serve. And a dog needs to be obedient. Also, getting it used to the sounds of every day life by staying calm and not coddling a pup will help teach it that certain sounds aren't frightening. Attending to its fear will let it think the fear is justified. If you continue what you are doing and speak to the dog normally it will recognize that the sound doesn't scare you and that it can be trusted.
Similar how kids will pick up on overly dramatic reactions to them falling or spiders and these kids just learn that minor scrapes are grounds for crying, demanding sweets, and being afraid of walking and that spiders are best dealt with by shrieking, running away and begging for others to deal with it.
You handled him so well, Vanessa! He's very alert and to me his face is extremely expressive. I wonder if he disliked the feel of the dryer on wet fur, but likes it on his dry coat. But good on his owners for bringing him for grooming socialization. That's gonna do him good when he gets to be an old man and needs help. 👏👏👏To them for thinking of his future and not just of how ADORABLE his face is.
And OMG he's cute! 🥰 And i love how you voice their obvious thoughts. I know its extra work for you, but they're accurate, funny, and teach me to read dogs. Thank you! 🫂
0:10 He's going down, he's yelling Timber
He’d better move, he’d better dance
Such an expressive lad.
The face on this dog was priceless. I am happy he didn't get aggressive during any of the groom.
ok. so if you know your dog doesn't do well with strangers, being touched or bathed, why would you take them to the groomers? do people even think about the things they do sometimes?
It's always the way, the most beautiful animals are the most dangerous. He is a beautiful boy. Seemed more bark than bite, thankfully. I love how he won't accept the touch of a strangers hand, but will accept treats from it lol.
Nope, he didn't bite because she didn't try to touch him. If she did, he would bite.
He probably realized she never crossed the line with his no touch rule and relieved she put the strange face mask away. That earned some trust, enough to take treats from her without being paranoid she was going to touch him without warning.
I absolutely love your captions of Aki's thoughts! 😂
The facial expressions are on another level with this breed; he was actually conversing with you and it was fun to watch ☺
Wow- he's stunning! (And salty.) Your patience is pretty legendary. I hate to judge, and I know it wasn't your call- but nobody's commented on that collar...
Yes, I went 😬 at the collar too. Those prong collars are aversive by design...
He had no problems with telling you what he thought about you grooming him 🤷♀️🤦♀️
You are so good with the animals Vanessa.
I absolutely LOVE his comments!!
He is so handsome.
Thank you so much for everything you do for our animal family
I have an American Akita & I love watching you work with them. You do amazing of explaining them to others! You are a blessing to all puppies, thank you🐾
You did such a good job reading his temperament and kept from making him uncomfortable enough to snip at you. I love the fact that you weren’t allowed to touch him but giving a treat was fine with him ❤ you’re the best, if I had a dog you’d be the kind of groomer I’d look for 😊
I doubt this will be seen but thank you for teaching me how to groom my dogs with your courses as an aspiring veterinarian it helps me a lot❤️
He REALLY wanted to speak to the manager!
The disgruntled episodes are so hilarious. Thank you :) Such a pretty pupper dogs.
I have an Akita grand puppy that I finally met last September. He was such a good but skeptical boy! It was one of the highlights of my time with him when I got a little wag and sniff. After 2 weeks of his allowing me to pet him, I was a pack member (honorary). 😊
"More afraid of people than the shower" fits my prior abused rescues quite well. Thankfully, while it may take years, enough patience is seeing them through to being more social and outgoing. I wouldn't know how to find them a trustable groomer though.
A good groomer is worth her weight in gold. I would give a shout out to her but I don’t know if she would like it!
It usually has nothing to do with Abuse when it comes to breeds like Akita. They were breed to hate and bite strangers. They are not friendly at all to strangers. People say "it's the owner not the breed", but for some breeds it is the breed. They were breed to gaurd and bite. So they will of you push them. It's how they are. You don't stick your hand in with a lion. You don't touch a growing Akita. It is not show. It is all bite.
@@1faithchick7 the hell are you on? akitas aren't bred to hate and bite strangers, they're not fighting dogs nor are they guard dogs (i suppose could use an akita as one if its personality allows it but they aren't bred for that purpose). originally they were used as hunting dogs for game as big as bears but these days they're mostly loyal companion dogs. they're not comparable to e.g. pits or amstaffs.
@@Fazikku They were bred for hunting, fighting, they are now trained for police / guard work.
I got a very unfriendly working sheep dog from the local rescue a couple of years ago. Had fear aggression as his original owner had abused him. It took him two weeks to realise strangers weren't the enemy but eight months to be off lead with other dogs. You never know what has happened to them. Bless you for taking chances on rescues. It's so rewarding when they're 'fixed'.❤
Akitas remind me of the story of Hachiko the loyal dog. Literally cried watching Hachiko.
Was that the dog who came to visit his owner at the train station even after the owner died?

Absolutely adore that King of the Hill reference that's my favorite 😍
His fur is a beautiful color and he was quite sassy
He looks like he's a lot more concerned about your mosquito hood than the actual dryer, which makes sense to me since he's more afraid of people than the actual grooming.
I love that you let him determine what you did in the grooming. Also, I think it was your pink hood that caused the barking with the blow dry. 💗
His expressions were priceless and matched your subs so perfectly 🤣
I think your pink hat freaked him out! LOL He was not sure of that was really you!
Oooh he's gonna be a hunk when he's fully grown. What a beautiful, lanky little man. And such a beautiful song of his people.
The faces he was making!!!! OMG SOO CUTE!!!
The owners did a bad job of socializing this pup. Considering he's wearing a pinch collar, no one has attempted to train him either.
You're assuming his owners were his owners during the period of time when socialization would have been beneficial.
@@debrafisher7373 Well, the owners shouldn't be using a prong collar on him.
My dog was a rescue, starting at 10 weeks old, when I got her, I took her everywhere with me and to obedience school. Until the day she died she was afraid of strangers, sounds of trains in the distance, sound or rain, flies, I could go on. She would shake and go hide, and if you attempted to pick her up to comfort her she would bite. We had medicine for her but I couldn’t give it every day and you can’t predict when these things will occur 🤷♀️
I know pinch collars seem mean, but I have met conscientious and well-intentioned owners who use them. Some dogs will respond to nothing else.
Akitas seem to always have the father's disapproving frown at a parent-teacher meeting 😅😂🥰
🤣🤣
I was walking down the street one day, and could definitely visibly see the angry expression on a similar dogs face. Someone was trying to get close to him moments later, and the dog was not feeling it. So expressive !
Hopefully his owners continue to socialize him. It's such a difficult breed. Even if a dog doesn't enjoy being around strangers, it should be trained not to be aggressive towards them, if it's at all possible. Obviously with some rescues it's harder or impossible. But he's still young, and socialisation is clearly needed to at least tolerate being touched. Too many people get breeds they aren't prepared to handle.
This may be ignorant but bringing a dog that cannot be touched by strangers to a groomer seems like a recipe for disaster. You are an amazing groomer, but this dog's people either need to work on socialization or learn to groom him themselves. I dont understand being proud of having poorly socialized standoffish and potentially dangerous dogs. Some dogs are like this to work, and that is understandable. But for a pet? It just reflects poorly on the owners in my opinion.
Maybe they are trying, but it can take time. And if you want to take them to a groomer, best to do it with someone like this lady who won't push it too far and still get a lot done.
This dog has or will bite someone. Not sure what the laws are in Canada, but in most U.S. states, that is an automatic death sentence.
@@user-ce6ow7ms4i You know this dogs history? Pretty weird tbh
Maybe you should listen more to what she says about Akita's and breed characteristics.
Where you get the idea that anyone is 'proud' that their dog is standoffish, you've pulled that from the ether.
Seriously watch some of her other episodes with the large breeds or livestock guardians, you'll learn a fair bit.
She knows something of the breed traits and works through their individual 'triggers'
Having her channel she can take more time than a commercial groomer and work round a dog, giving them breaks etc.
@@carltonascarf7694 These people always turn up in comments, they 'know' so much.
As for bites, in the UK the most popular dog for putting people in hospital are Labs, not a surprise given their popularity, but you'd be surprised to see one put down.
Family's take their time to understand what caused the bite and fix that problem, rather than 'fix' the dog with an injection.
The US police also shoot a hell of a lot of dogs, so there's very little that can be learned from that side of the border apart from 'things not to do'
LOL!! 🤣Your narrative was over the top! I just love watching your videos! Stay "bite-safe" and wishing you continued success in your Girl and The Dogs biz!!

He was brought with the prong collar and Vanessa for sure couldn't remove it. ☹️
She didn't put it on him, it's the dog's own collar that he came in with. She says in the video that he wouldn't allow her to take it off
I hope Vanessa educated the owner...the poor dog is set up to be reactive.
Vanessa is very, VERY brave. God bless her and keep her and her wonderful family.. ❤️
If I'm going by my own reckon when it comes to sound, Aki's response in the tub compared to the open room is the change in acoustics and the sound-enclosure. I've got a big breadth of sensory-processing troubles as well as my trust issues, and oftentimes a big part of dealing with sensory impact, far away from full sensory-overload, is feeling trapped, and this can stem from sensing that you're trapped, not wholly physical restraint.
Not everyone as good with other living beings can teach a class, but you are a wonderful teacher to me in how I understand the pups I've met, and my own interaction with the world and people around me. I've learned a lot from you, and I'm glad I have a habit of stopping by (subscribed to both GWTD #1 & #2).
And it's always sunny in the shadow of the CN Tower. I have a star that dances for me there solo, on occasion or request. She's a cat and a dog person, and I impress to you that'll make sense beyond the vagary of my brevity.
I definitely agree with other comments about the blow dryer and the beekeeper hat. He did not like the hat (maybe because he couldn't see you clearly). Great job respecting his boundaries. Giant kudos to the owners for knowing his boundaries and letting you know ahead of time. I hope Aki becomes one of your regulars because a new groomer is going to stress the poor guy out. (I'd also love to see his transformation where he starts to trust you more)

He's a tough one to work with, but you got him through at least a bath and blow dry. That's an achievement with this one.
What a talker and such a great face! I wonder about the hat/netting. Dogs can be reactive at hats. When we were doing some training with our dogs in an advanced obedience session, the instructor put on a hat and that changed everything for some of the dogs.
