    Nice job! If you put a bathroom scale under the middle of the door and carefully close the door on top of it, you can know exactly how much the door weighs. It is important to have the correct springs on your door. Too light of a spring and the heavy door will damage the motor or gears in your garage door opener. If you do weigh the door, be sure to disconnect both of your springs from the door to get the true weight.

      Will it still be accurate if one spring is still on? What if you put a too heavy spring on. Will it hurt anything? Thanks!

    nice tip with regard to the "quick link" - the last set of springs I did was tough to get attached to the eye hooks. I have to replace my other door's springs here tomorrow.

    good video but i'd wear gloves when you're pulling the new spring up to hook it. get your hand pinched in those coils you could end up with some painful blood blisters.

    I remember watching the garage door company doing this with my first house, thinking it was so simple. Then had several houses with torsion springs and forgot all about these types of springs. My daughter just told me one of their springs broke yesterday. This really is quite simple, do you have any links or places you suggest buying new springs ? She lives in a small remote town in eastern Idaho so most everything of this nature comes via a delivery to the house.
    Thanks for making this video, I hope it helps them.

      Lowes or Home depot. If you buy online, then make sure you pay close attention to how much weight the springs are rated for. Also, you MUST buy and replace both of the springs. Otherwise, one will have more tension than the other and the door will not go up evenly

    My garage torsion spring broke after 18+ years, so I ordered another spring using the SAME SIZE shown on the broken spring. Installed it on my 8ft door which requires 33 to 34 turns. I’m up to around 45 quarter turns and when I lift the door halfway it falls to the floor. I noticed that this new spring did not expand out as far as the previous spring. It’s about 3-eighth inch short of the indentation mark of the old spring. Should I do 33 quarter turns and tap spring to stretch it out to the old spot on the shaft?

    Nobody does anything about these springs until they break and when they break the spring will be in tension with the door closed .

    Some MFG like General Door has special cables that they use or other cables could come off unless change bottom fixtures to a different type . Could cause injuries or death if anything is done incorrectly . Over 40 years in the OHD industry

    Nice Job. I had to learn the hard way. My garage door springs (same style as yours) break off at the hook (loop) ends every so often. I've had the safety cables installed since my first spring breakage in the 1970's. I had another one break 2 days ago and caught your video while refeshing myself on the process of replacement. So thanks very much.
    But you've got a glaring electrical safety problem that could burn your house down. That "Homeowners" extension cord draped over Nails and sharp edges of the Door Hardware are clear fire hazards. (shame on you!) 🤓

    I was closing the garage doors and right before the door reached the ground, one of the springs snapped. Will I have to just manually open the garage door?

  • @JLT3

    that looked like the spring length when stretched was over 48" (recommended max stretch). Is that okay?

    One question. Once you have installed the new springs how do you determine how much tension you're going to put on the springs so that you're not putting too much workload on your door opener?

    • @flannelguydiy6458
      @flannelguydiy6458  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      you dont adjust the spring tension. You buy the springs that are sized to the weight of your door.

    Is there any problem using a higher caliber spring. The color is not visible on my existing springs. Somehow the 180 pounds (yellow) are cheaper that other color. My door is a standard 8x7 insulated aluminium.

    Call MFG or look for tags and for any information on tracks or door also can use a spring gauge to find out wire size . Sometimes other installers put the wrong springs on the door or homeowner can become Very Dangerous & cause Death

  • @woodzyvision
    @woodzyvision ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Home Depot sells a variety of these..with different weights...how do I know which one I need? TIA

    • @Thomasnmi
      @Thomasnmi ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Either weigh the garage door or find the weight online.
      Springs are sold in pairs with a weight rating for BOTH of them.
      If your door weights 120 pounds, find the spring box with a 120 pound rating.
      Always replace both springs at the same time

      Multiple ways, fastest way is look at the color at the end of the existing springs, then buy springs matching the color, the second way is look for the model or serial number of the door which is usually located at either bottom left or right of the door then contact the manufacturer, third way is using the scale.

      Too much tension on the springs. Either take some tension down, or try increasing the closing power of your opener.

    So if my garage door weighs 130 pounds, does that mean I need 130 pound springs?
    Thanks for the video!

      Read the specs on the springs to see what weight they are rated for. I would personally go a bit higher to make sure the spring pulls the door up easily.
