  • Learn spring replacement in just 8 minutes! Watch our clear and concise video, filmed at our parts store showroom. Watch till the end to learn how to measure a garage door spring so that you can better order from us.
    Have these 3 measurements ready when calling us to order…
    Wire Diameter x Inside Diameter x Length
    1. Wire diameter- measure 20 coils only on broken spring. Convert to a decimal, then divide by 20.
    2. Inside diameter (we only carry the two inch springs)
    3. Length of the broken spring (don’t include end pieces, and subtract the gap or push the two pieces together).
    The following are the only spring sizes we currently ship:
    .207x2x22 most common spring
    .218x2x23 common
    .218x2x25
    .225x2x24
    .225x2x35 common high cycle
    .234x2x27
    .243x2x29 common
    .250x2x30 common single spring
    .262x2x32
    Other items we ship:
    Set of winding bars
    10- nylon rollers
    3- bearing plates
    2- torsion cables (7 or 8 ft tall doors)
    2- cable drums
    Call or text our parts store for pricing, or to place an order 713-557-3407.

      Okay question are most bearing diameter the same? And can i use a longer size spring or would it need to be the exact same length.

      @@Hardstyler981 thank you so much. You know I returned and remeasured and it is 7'. I don't know if its the heat or my eyes, but I swear I saw six. Any way, I still did the 29 quarter turns and herein is the big issue. The springs look like they are slinky's or some type earth worm, not at all normal and when I attempted to raise the door, both cables on either end wrapped around the bar instead on the spool. What am I doing wrong ?

    It's nice that you have provided this video on how to change a spring safely. Years ago when I worked in the industry, the typical call on a Saturday afternoon was from the woman of the house. When we would get there we would find the husband with his arm in a sling, one broken spring and the other one already unwound and occasionally some blood spatter near it.

    Thank you for the tutorial!! Saved 400 dollars by watching this. For anyone thinking of doing this, beware of buying springs from Amazon. Turns out they sent me the wrong springs and I didn’t realize until I completed the install and the door still wouldn’t happen. Had to have a company come out just to tell me that. Thankfully he didn’t charge me for the consultation. If you plan on doing this id advise you buy springs from a reputable American company.

    Great video. The last part about testing the spring resistance with the motor track disengaged is probably the most important. The door should be easy to lift and also easy to roll back down, manually. Spring manufacturers are not consistent and the rule of 1 turn for each foot height of the door, as this is just an estimate. You may need to adjust your spring coils by a 1/4, 1/2 or 3/4 of a turn to get the least resistance. Your garage door motor will appreciate it.

    • @parts4garagedoors278
      @parts4garagedoors278  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      True. Usually just one or two quarter turns is adequate IF the spring size installed is the correct size.

    • @SquirrilahFish
      @SquirrilahFish 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Doesn't it also depend on the drum size though? Like, a 4" drum will roll 12" of cable each turn, but an 8" drum is going to roll 24" of cable per rotation.
      So you need to factor how many turns against the circumstance of the drum, and the height of the door.

    • @SemiMono
      @SemiMono 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Excellent point! But, are all drums roughly the same size? I wonder if they're close enough that it fits into fudge factor, though it's also possible this is where a lot of the error comes in. @@SquirrilahFish

      28 quarter turn would work in this case. Springs can look screwy if you try to tap them, or gap them before tightening the set screws. It's not recommended to do so. The springs stretch out naturally as they are tensioned.

    • @mcunni4462
      @mcunni4462 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You must have low headroom track. Often the cables and cable drums are on the outside of the vertical tracks. There is often a pulley on each side to help pull the door open higher. He was incorrect to state that the springs are always wound upward. There are applications where the spring or springs are reversed, drums reversed and springs are wound downward. If the cables are rapping onto the drum on outer side facing you, then springs are wound downward. The lefthand wound spring would be on the inside left looking out, and rightwound would be on the right side. Unwinding a reverse wound spring could be very dangerous if you don't know it's reverse wound and you loosen set screws the the bar pulls or flies upward and you are not expecting. It is usually safer to pay a professional then risk injury if you really don't know what you are doing.

    My garage torsion spring broke after 18+ years, so I ordered another spring using the SAME SIZE shown on the broken spring. Installed it on my 8ft door which requires 33 to 34 turns. I’m up to around 45 quarter turns and when I lift the door halfway it falls to the floor. I noticed that this new spring did not expand out as far as the previous spring. It’s about 3-eighth inch short of the indentation mark of the old spring. Should I do 33 quarter turns and tap spring to stretch it out to the old spot on the shaft?

    • @parts4garagedoors278

      It depends on the circumference of the cable drum. Most residential garage doors are 12 inch. If that was the case, you would need 4- 1/4 turns per foot, or 20 quarter turns to elevate 5 ft tall, PLUS ONE OR TWO quarter turns to hold the cables tight once opened.

      Not to unwind the spring. Either way you are feeling the full force of the spring. The only time it would be helpful is if the spring cone get's stuck on the tube because of the set screw indentations getting in the way. We usually use a file on the tube and a bit of grease if necessary to allow the spring cone to get past where the set screws were. It's not a common issue though.

      You can measure your existing springs and match them. This is assuming they were the correct springs to begin with. If you watch to the end of the video it shows you how to take the 3 needed measurements.

    I tried this disconnect the safety linkage in the center and no matter how hard I pull up my garage door won’t budge not sure what to do it’s a 16X8 double car garage door. It’s a single spring above and it is snapped. I checked the cables and they don’t look to be binding anywhere I’m just at a loss not knowing how to get the garage door open and my truck is stuck inside. Good times.

      That door weighs a minimum of 180 pounds bud. Its difficult to lift

      Single sping tells me its a wayne dalton door. Have a vice grip in your pocket and have a friend help you lift the door. Then, clamp the vice grip tightly under the bottom roller when the door is lifted fully open.

      Sorry, clamp the vice grip tightly to the track below the bottom roller. I know some people need every detail laid.out.

    I think I just got scammed? I just paid $2000 to repair my door springs, I am in my late 60's with back issues and tried to lift door to get my car out and have special appointments to keep this week, I was at the mercy of these techs and need it repaired ASAP, $2000.

    You didnt say anything about the centering bushing between the springs!

    • @parts4garagedoors278
      @parts4garagedoors278  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Older doors may have the center bearing inside the end cone of the spring. In that case you can re-insert it into the new spring. The center bearing plate shown on this video has an attached bearing that doesn't come out. It simply gets sandwiched between the two springs, or in case of one spring just goes into that one- and then the spring(s) are bolted.

    Great tutorial. Super helpful. When replacing the cable at 3m50sec, my vice grips didn’t have enough ceiling clearance. I attached the vice grips diagonally upwards, clove hitched a rope to it and hung my tool box off it, which applied enough force to keep everything where it needed to be. 😅

      Wow. That's creative! Glad you figured out a way. In some cases you can just clamp to the torsion tube and have the vise grip handle push hard to the ceiling.

    You could have said the right and spring go on what side first when putting on the first spring because if you standing inside the garage door the right side is right but at the in of the video you tell people the red is on the left side so you be standing outside of the garage door.
