@@Eloso3135 Gregg Rollie had left and Jonathan Cain had joined the band by ‘81. I saw that tour as well (my very first concert at 14 years old) Loverboy opening act and Journey in their prime. How blessed were we??? 🙌🏼❤️
I was lucky to see Journey live every year from 79-82 through my high school years. The Midnight Special was great for music, but they got vagrants off the streets of LA to fill the audience - so of course they were drugged out and sleepy
Steve Perry is just one of those singers that I can't recall ever hitting a bad note. Great tone, effortless range, and truly one of the best vocalists I've ever heard.
At 5:14 you can hear him starting his harmony note low. And at 5:24 not quite right. Hey, don't get me wrong...these are all passable but hey you brought it up 🤣

He recalled a story where he heard Sam Cooke on the radio while driving with his mom in a convertible and it was one of those "tunnel vision" moments where all could he hear was the song.
Yes i aggree for steve perry but now we accept that Arnel his replacement is now the vocalist of journey & for the past 16yrs .. still the band is existing & performing on stage. He sounded better live then anyone I’ve ever heard ! Love love journey and adore Steve. What a man and voice I also think Neil didn’t get the credit he deserved as a player
I remember seeing this the night it appeared on TV. I heard the song and Greg. When Steve started I spun around and watched. I was mesmerized by Steve's voice. I kept saying out loud "who is that? And why isn't he singing more??". I'm still a fan of his.
I remembered staying up late just to see this performance. The drummer was Ansley Dunbar. Wolfman Jack was the coolest DJ! There was a song written for Wolfman Jack!
Yes, Steve and Greg sound great together! I love Journey and have seen them 3 times in concert back in the day!! What a great walk down memory lane. Thanks Mike! Oh, love your story about Santana and your dad! 🤘
Feelin That Way/Anytime are the first songs I ever heard from Journey back in ~1978. I’ve seen Journey 8 times over the last 40 years and I was lucky enough to see Gregg Rolie in concert with Neal Schon a couple of years ago. They’re all truly amazing musicians.
Yes it was Ainsley Dunbar, Ross Vallery on Bass and Neil Schon on guitar. Greg Rollie and Steve. They were really before their time, they were that good.🎼❤️🇦🇺❤️🇺🇸🕺🏻💃🎸☘️
FYI, when Steve joined Journey, I read that everyone else in the band had to take vocal lessons so they could get their harmonies right to keep up with Steve. I also heard that Steve ended up adding more of his vocals for the background parts in the studio because he could get better takes one after another. He's a perfectionist.
I was in high school, had by then been in vocals since age 8....heard these guys and my love for Tenor was born. Feeling that way/ Anytime and Patiently were my first of many favorites.
@@MikeGoodrich Hey Mike, subscribed. Have you found the Journey From Time vids on here? Gregg is back with Neal and they played most of the stuff from the first 3 albums, as well as some from their Pop time. Have the drummer who was in Journey post Steve, that sounds damn close to Steve so this song and ANytime etc. are damn good. They went out on a mini tour in 2019 just before COVID hit.
Yes, I remember The Wolfman and the Midnight Special. Those were good times. I don't know how some people can play so well at a young age. But, Lita Ford was 17 when she played for the Runaways, and she was already an awesome guitar player.
Omg, blast from the past! Wolfman Jack/ Midnight Special a classic. Journey/w Steve Perry 'the Voice' an amazing time to experience Rock. Still love their music❤✌
God they're amazing. I'm just grateful that we have these videos for us and for the next generation. They seem to enjoy them, and I think that's the only thing I have in common with them, lol.

It was so exquisite; if what other vocalists did was called singing, then there had to be another verb for what Steve could do with his voice. I was disappointed when Gregg Rolie left, he is so much better than Jonathan Cain.
Yeah but......., if there was no Cain, then Journey would never had the songs and sound that brought so much fame in/from the 80's, and a catalog that is still relevant. Cain doesn't get the credit he deserves, but he and Perry together were incredible.

He said truth of it is, Greg was all toured out. He also had been in Santana and they had toured for years, and then came Journey who also toured probably 10 month’s of the year. Greg said the main reason he called it a day, was because he wanted time at home with his family, not because there was any bad blood between him and Steve and I think he knew he was leaving the band in good hand’s because Steve was so good. Of course though the critics had put their their spin on it and made out it was because Greg and Steve didn’t get along. Greg did come back when Neal formed Journey Through Time and he was as great as he’d always been. 🎼❤️🇦🇺❤️🇺🇸🕺🏻💃🎸☘️

This will blow your mind even more, Neil was only 15 years old when joined and started touring with Santana. Greg tells a story about picking Neil up at High School on his way to practice, apparently Neil wasn’t going too High School.🎼❤️🇦🇺❤️🇺🇸🕺🏻💃🎸☘️

With these great singers it's the live performance that cements their ability. Bruce Dickinson, Rob Halford, Steve Perry, Geoff Tate, Sebastian Bach, Mickey Thompson, Dennis Deyoung
I love that you referenced the “Feels So Good” guitar solo! That and “Kid Charlemagne” were my faves as a young guitar player. Still blows my mind to this day!
Steve and Gregg sounded fantastic together. I think.it must have been tough for Gregg to share lead singer duties with someone who sounded - and looked - like Steve (the GOAT).
Yes I remember Wolfman Jack & the Midnight Special. Great Stuff! Love this vocal combo between Gregg Rolie & Steve Perry. Absolutely incredible! No difference between the album and live. WOW!!!!
I recommend reacting to a band called Heilung. The specific song is “Krigsgaldr.” They have an entire live show about 1.5 hours long, and it’s totally worth the time to watch the show; but that one song, for the sake of a TH-cam recording, will do. Just be sure to watch the show afterwards. You won’t be disappointed.
I remember wolf man jack, I would tell my dad about Journey and tell him Steve brought them to stardom. And he never wasted an opportunity to remind me through the years. 😂
I would sit about a foot away from the TV to watch Midnight Special so I wouldn't wake anyone up...also Don Kirshner's concerts that didn't come on until 1:00, lol. Good times!
I remember it too I watched it that night I never missed that show came on at midnight that’s why they called it a midnight special remember that was back in the 70s I know I tell a lot of people that Greg Raleigh was the lead singer and they’re like now Steve Barry has always been the lead singer I said you’re a lot younger than me I remember them before Steve joined journey I think it was really welcoming him that he joined
Saw "Feeling That Way" , automatically "Liked." (My favorite Journey song.) I only remember Wolfman Jack through re-runs of shows, as I was born in the early 70s, Mike, and only watched Midnight Special later on as well. What an excellent show!
Great choice of Journey songs! Whenever somebody asks me what my favorite Journey songs are, these two are clearly at the top. As others have suggested, reviewing Boston's Brad Delp would be a treat. In fact, I believe you can get his vocal track only for More Than a Feeling on TH-cam - it's a real treat. Thanks!
I so wish I were a little older so they would have been on my radar. By the time I was a tween to early teen I finally found Steve’s beautiful voice and such a great band! I remember the midnight special and Wolfman Jack.
Funny you say that about vowels… Mr. Perry is Portuguese & recorded a song for his mother in his first language. In an interview a pile of years ago he was asked if it was more difficult to sing in another language & he said it was a little easier singing in Portuguese because European vowels tend to be more extended than English. He also didn’t think he’d ever release it, so we may never get to hear him singing in anything but English. However, if you’re in CA & have any musical connections, perhaps you can find someone to convince him to goof around with an old Journey track in his home studio & redo his vocals in Portuguese. That would be cool to hear! Glad I found your channel. 👍🏼
Friday nights was Don Kirshner's Rock Concert and Saturday nights was The Midnight Special w/Wolfman Jack. And if you didn't get either of those on TV you could turn on FM Radio and find King Biscuit's Flower Hour. Great stuff we'll likely never see or hear again...........except on TH-cam.
I watched Midnight Special every week! A lot of my favorite bands were on there. Journey and Eddie Money are my two go to bands for forty years! I listen to them every day!
I watched Midnight Special back in the day as well. There was the show Friday's that Journey were the musical guests, stellar performance! The crowd was going nuts! Please review that video, think you'll enjoy it.
I know you put this up a few years ago, but I loved both your enthusiasm of Journey and Midnight Special! Journey/Steve Perry my absolute favorite rock of all time. But let me feed you some trivia on The Midnight Special. The first one was for a sorta “Rock the Vote” Special that was hosted by my very favorite singer of all time since I was 7 years old John Denver. And it was a great success and continued for years after that. But I do agree ... the audiences sucks 😂 for ROCK 😂 But the very first one is on TH-cam in its entirety and about 10 Acts are on of all music - folk, funk, rock, soul
Yes! I used to watch The Midnight Special with Wolfman Jack MCing.... The 70's cranked out some amazing music and set the stage for music in the 80's. Don't forget those amazing vocals were all done with no pitch correction as that technology didn't exist back then.
The duo of Greg and Steve Perry was awesome! I was so lucky to see them in ‘81 with Loverboy as the opening act.
Oh, 81? I think Gregg left in 80 perhaps, right before Escape.
I guess more accurately I saw Journey in 81, don’t honestly recall if Gregg was still with them at that point or not.

Absolutely remember, both The Midnight Special and Don Kirchners in Concert.
I watched Midnight Special back in the day as well. There was the show Friday's that Journey were the musical guests, stellar performance! The crowd was going nuts! Please review that video, think you'll enjoy it.
Thanks! I'll try to find it!
Excellent video. Good history too
I know you put this up a few years ago, but I loved both your enthusiasm of Journey and Midnight Special! Journey/Steve Perry my absolute favorite rock of all time. But let me feed you some trivia on The Midnight Special. Acts are on of all music - folk, funk, rock, soul
Yes! I used to watch The Midnight Special with Wolfman Jack MCing.... The 70's cranked out some amazing music and set the stage for music in the 80's. Don't forget those amazing vocals were all done with no pitch correction as that technology didn't exist back then.
So true!!
I REALLY remember Midnight Special WELL! In fact, I was married at 19..in 1976. (dumb a**)! It was great & I loved Wolfman Jack!!!!
