One of my favorite songs by my all time favorite bands. Steve Perry’s voice…. my favorite. Nobody can come close. Perry, Schon and Cain made magic, but I’ll never understand how Steve Smith didn’t get more accolades! He’s an amazing drummer and just added so so so much to their songs. His beats really stood out. Also, I’ll NEVER understand how they didn’t have a number 1 hit!!!! Boggles my mind!

Steve Perry, my favorite singer, one of a kind and not able to be replicated. Steve puts the soul in everything he sings. As for Prince, he was so much more than Purple Rain, so multi talented, unreal guitar player and could play multiple instruments.

      Seriously!
There's a lot to love about The Professor, but the legacy he's creating of these back stories and history behind the music we love are his gift to music lovers for the ages. Especially these interviews with the actual creators of our favorite music!
I grew up listening to Casey Kasem, and some friends and my brother made fun of me because they thought he was "lame". I loved Casey because he brought modern music history to life that I otherwise wouldn't have known. Also, like The Professor, Casey had an obvious true love of the music he talked about.
We used to have game night at my brother's house, and a friend brought "Trivial Pursuit - Rock Edition". My brother was older, and had a rock band, and this was in the mid-1980s. He figured he would rule this game, but I won, easily. I'm not a musician, but I've loved music since before I could speak! Every event in my life has a song or two attached to it.

Yeah, total shame what's going on with Journey. All of the Escape members have been in a law suit against Schon. That tells us either Neal's the problem, or all the others are the problem. I only know that Neal has kept the band going, and I'm grateful.

Tenure studying Konokol Drumming in India that opened his "Cramped Feel" of being a hampster tied to a pole in a room of wheels. Neal could play a massive kit, flawlessly, but it was always a mind struggle for him as he always second guessed his skill level. So he met with Steve and learned the methods of Fluid Motion and Rhythm/Fills that the instrument is capable of producing when under less tension, managing space more efficiently when creating pieces for Big Songs. 6 months later, Rush was cutting 2112..perhaps their most legendary display of their devotion to musicianship perfection. Steve's ability to manage his own very successful Jazz/Fusion Band Vital Information and Cut Big Rock Ballads woth Journey in the same week is IMO what puts him in the ICON category. Plus. He lives less than hour from me in Ashland Oregon, and Big Dawg Deeno's an hour North in Corvalis. Imagine that, 3 Drummers Who Shared The Stage With Journey all retired to Oregon.

Since that was my name. And was personal to what I was going through. They were so good together. I think the music they made TOGETHER was magic. I try not to look at the fighting now between them and really not interested in anything new they’ve done. It’s not the same. You can’t go back. Glory days right. What if Steve Perry who actually quit music altogeher passed on a meeting with Herbie Herbert? It all came together with Johnathon Cain joining. Hey Mustang! You're not alone on the misheard lyrics, but you're a stand up guy for admitting it!
My ex insisted that in Ac/Dc's song, "Dirty Deeds", that the lyrics were "Neckties, contracts, I VOTED!"
No matter how many times I explained that the lyrics were not "I voted" but "High Voltage", he told me I was wrong. They even had an album in the 70s called "High Voltage". I pointed out that in that part of the song, he's listing different methods for offing someone, so "I voted" would make no sense. I gave up when he insisted I'm wrong.
When I was a kid, the Credence Clearwater song, "Bad Moon Rising" scared me some. I thought he was saying, "Don't go out tonight! It's bound to take your life, there's a baboon on the right!". I had seen a NatGeo documentary about apes, and it featured baboons with huge fangs, ripping some poor animal to shreds. When I heard that song, I was thinking, "Yeah, I'm hip John. I'm not going anywhere near a baboon!"

It would've been an unstoppable force and I reckon Thriller wouldn't have kept the No1 spot for as long as it did. I'm not surprised Journeys Greatest Hits album was so successful. In fact, I have listened to it so often that whenever I'm listening to any of their other albums that when a song ends I automatically hear the opening to next song as it appears in the order of the Greatest Hits BEFORE the actual track on the album begins. My brain is hardwired now.

"Faithfully" is a great song. The 1980's was the decade of the great power ballads and no lead singer of any rock group sang them better than Steve Perry. As a solo artist, he would go on to sing 2 more great ballads with "Oh Sherrie" and "Foolish Heart".

I remember begging my mom to go to a local Woolworths store ( New Hartford NY... Sangertonwn Square mall ) because friends from school said they had the Journey Escape video game for the Atari 2600.. and playing it relentlessly for weeks if not months while my older brother let me use his Walkman to listen to the cassette on. MAGICAL times

I remember hearing Journey when I was a kid in the 80s, but recently, now almost 50, I've been going back and 'rediscovering" them, gorging on as much Journey as I can starting with their very first album before Steve joined. I absolutely love them, and I've been listening to a curated playlist repeatedly for weeks now. The only thing is... as far as I am concerned, the best Journey is Journey with Steve Perry. I can't bring myself to listen to any of the new stuff.

  • @FloridaManRacer

I've heard of this story before from other sources. Prince was so worried he called and asked if they minded, they basically said it's a hit, release the song. Which was just awesome of them considering how many plagiarism claims there have been over the years and how big both Journey and Prince were at the time. Some called Journey's ballads too sappy but Neil Schon's guitar work just cuts right through that bs and let's you rock along to a love song. That's called TALENT. And no one in their right mind will ever criticize Steve Perry's vocals.

I remember seeing Journey in the Salt Palace 1986, The Outfield was the opening band, and they were Phenomenal!! Journey came out and they were Phenomenal to the Extreme Maximum Overdrive, I mean I was in Rock N Roll Heaven, they were so great! When they left the stage, we cheered for more, and Journey obliged. On either their first or second encore they played Faithfully, and it was only at that point that I realized that they hadn't played it yet. Their concert was so phenomenal, the music so pure, so captivating, so enthralling, that I'd forgotten that the song Faithfully had not been played yet. I agree with the professor, Faithfully and Don't Stop Believing, they're my two favorite Journey songs. There's not a man on spaceship planet earth that loves his woman that doesn't wish he'd written Faithfully for his wife, or even a song only half a great. True! Three chords and the Truth! Bty, I'll be seeing Journey this July at the Stadium of Fire, my 3rd time to see this, the greatest band ever!

Journey’s hit Who’s crying now, to me was the quintessential 1980’s song. It was slow with lots of guitars and keyboards. It typified for me the sound all music needed to have. That mystery goes a long way. I saw journey play a few years ago with the new singer. He hit all the notes faithfully. I still miss the creator, singer Joe Perry.

I saw the Escape and Frontiers tour, both were massive but Frontiers just did it for me, it was very high energy, lots of pyro, very loud and I didn't see anyone sit down the whole show. The place was just going crazy. Bryan Adams did a super job opening for them, that's when he had Cuts like a Knife out and that was a huge record also that year and he got the crowd pumped up for sure, by the time he finished the crowd was going crazy and knowing that Journey was next they got even louder, then when the lights went out the place just exploded in screams and yells. That had to be one of the loudest shows I ever attended, my ears ringed for a while after that show and to this day I still talk about it. I'm so grateful that I got to see them when they were on fire all over the planet back then. I'm just disappointed the way things have turned out for the former members and current ones, so much drama going on.

This song was the very first song I "tried" recording to cassette, but did it with a microphone held up to the mono speaker of my Sanyo portable AM/FM radio with cassette recorder that I had just received for my 12th birthday (I only had an AM clock radio older than myself prior to that, listening to the world famous KFRC 610 and KNBR 680 in SF)). Found out after recording that I could "dub" right from the radio to the tape.
This is super nostalgic for me as I remember the quality of my recording being gawd awful and I have a fully odd personal history with the band. 😳.
In 1998, I was driving taxi here in Reno and had Ross Valery hop into the passenger seat next to me at the airport.
Cut to 2010, I was working the truck dock as a stagehand and got to run the spotlight for Ross (and also the late Glenn Frey at the same show).
    Thank you for this one.💙
