Wow, I have been inside of more PS3s than I can count for repairs, the majority of them being between 2011 and 2016, and I have almost NEVER seen one as clean as that before. You definitely found the golden ticket there, not to mention it's around 5 years older than the ones I worked on.
@@nasa.starry.ultraoof1827 Not that special, I have the 60Gb original, EU launch model. Mine wasn't that dirty when I got it but I bought it from a friend I know well who bought it new. Since you're planning on keeping this around mostly for PS2 games I'd definitely recommend you jailbreak it just for access to fan control. I personally set my fan to dynamically cool and keep the system from going higher than 65 C. With the way the PS2's emulator works, you don't have that same level of control but you can set your console to automatically bump the fan up to a certain % when booting a PS2 game. Plus a big bonus of course is you'll be able to play whatever PS2 games you want from the internal HDD.
Currently doing an attempted fix of my launch 60GB PS3. It got YLOD back in 2010 or 2011 and I'm replacing the NEC Tokin capacitors after never trying to fix it before due to not liking the idea of reflow/reball. I'm awaiting some parts and it's definitely *not* an easy system to work on but hopefully I get my beloved behemoth back soon. We'll see as this fix has been done before. UPDATE: The rona stuff made it difficult to order the parts needed but they'll now be here in a week! I'll update on any progress!
@@airplane6417 I already have a slim (not super slim). Grabbed it within a week of my launch 60GB getting YLOD. Modded and all. I just want my 60GB baby back lol
Few things that came to my mind: -I think it just boils down to keeping it clean and cool, those capacitors will die no matter what. Delid it and replace that crusty thermal paste. -Oiling the fan bearing helps with the noise that may occur, my 80GB made horrible (literally) "niuuiuiuiu" sound.. -Be sure to replace those NEC/TOKIN capacitors and heck yeah get the newer model PSU that is APS-xxx (black plastic casing ones).
@AleksSDF xacto knife or anything whit a long sharp edge and alot of precision. very easy to messup wouldnt recomend it if you have no idea what you are doing
@AleksSDF Painting blade is actually pretty safe tool when compared to that suggested X-acto knife. The adhesive is strong as hell to begin with. Whole operation took like 3 hours to do, 80% of that went to sliding that blade around
This is also why emulation is so important. These more modern consoles just don't have the longevity of the old cartridge based ones without moving parts.
No kidding. I still have the NES and SNES units that my dad bought us secondhand when we were little kids (already quite well-loved by previous owners at that point). Both still work, as does the N64. Nothing else has proved half as durable since then.
Good thing all Nintendo and Playstation consoles are emulation capable with almost all games being playable upscalled today. Except the PS4... and the Vita which is still on its very early days but should see progress soon. I hope to see more progress on the Xbox side though for CXBX-R and Xenia. As for the games, the internet has definitely preserved them. I think companies should always have 2 launch models each generation. One as the standard version, directed towards more casual players. And then the premium console with full backwards compatibility capable of reading cartridges, CDs, DVDs, basically for collectors or people who also still want to play older games. Otherwise we have to rely on PC emulation which to be fair, has not disappointed either.
That's because modern console use moving parts. That's always the first thing to go on most recent consoles. I've already replaced 2 Wii disc drives, but so far that's the only issue I've had with Wiis. And yes, emulation is important, but I'm certain we'll still have working retro consoles within our lifetime. As long as ppl can repair/replace parts and clone consoles get manufacturered. They aren't going away anytime soon like some ppl make it sound like.
That would be cool to see tho, the ps3 is my first console that I ever had that had the red light of death not yellow thankfully and it's all original except for miner upgrades.
I must've gotten lucky as hell with my 60GB launch PS3 that I bought all the way back on launch day as I have not had a single problem with it. Never been opened, never needed any repair of any kind and has worked flawlessly since day one.
I bought my OG PS3 about a week ago from a Value Village for $8! Haven't tested everything yet, but only thing issue I've found so far is the Red flashing light problem, somewhat fixed that and in the process broke the eject / power Circuit ribbon cable. I ordered a replacement from Ebay though. Edit: It's fixed and working great now!
Man this really took me back to the Yellow Light Of Death times. :') My friends giving me their "broken" consoles and me fixing them without them knowing it wasn't scrap. good times good times lol
'They said it worked.' That's what they all say. As someone who's built a large gaming collection, 70% or so from eBay, I can say from experience that eBay game/console sellers are some of the biggest bull-s'ers out there. I've returned so many items due to ridiculously inaccurate descriptions and outright lies. 'It was working fine when sent it...' is another favorite.
I'm very careful about what I buy on E-Bay. I used to buy a lot of things but they've fallen off with customer service and handling return cases. I'll never sell again.

It might be that i dont use my consoles that much (im a mix of a pc and console gamer) but why or how do your consoles keep dying? By dying do you mean they dont turn on or you have any other hardware/software problems?
Cheers Spawn. Got an A01 recently (pretty rare here in Aus) and did a repaste last night. Your advice with the paste amounts and BR ribbon cable were much appreciated.
I still have my old PS3. It was the MGS4 bundle. I remember at the time it was an incredible offer. At that point they had already removed PS2 compatibility on all models, but they brought it back one last time just for this edition. Also it was the first bundle with the new Dualshock 3 instead of the Sixaxis. I think it was also the first model with 80GB.
I didn't know any of that! I remember seeing that bundle and, even though I'd never played MGS at that point, I wanted it so bad. I read the Gamespot review of MGS4 at the time and remember it getting 10/10 lol It was years later I finally bought myself a PS3 and that game, yay first job!
Yup I bought my MGS4 bundle from EB games. I still have my original copy of MGS4. My ps3 unfortunately crapped out on me back in 2011. I still have that system to this day but I never opened it. This video gave me the confidence to try and fix it myself. If not I got a couple of ps3 experts in mind.
A PS3 on that condition is a definite find, especially the model you found. I guess you'll be tiring it if the PS5 ends up being backwards compatible with the all previous games. However, I somehow doubt it will includ the PS3.
Excellent video man. The fragility of the PS3 and PS2, especially 10-20 years later is why PS5 backwards compatibility is a must for PS5. I won't be buying it at launch if it won't play PS2 and PS3 games
The 80gb model isn't backward compat, so you can get those all day long for really cheap - in particular since they're so big and heavy and run hot compared to the PS3 Slim, which maybe costs a few dollars more, but runs so much more quiet and should last a lot longer.
@@starmaster7784 you'd have to check the actual die temps though. Because if the paste under the lid is shot, it doesn't matter how much or little heat is coming out the vent, it could still be running very hot.
This teardowns of used consoles are really interesting, I got a ps3 for super cheap, seriously like 25 bucks a couple years ago and just had to mod it for the fan to work hard and the console not shut down on overheating, but overall it works just fine
I remenber my A01 yellow lighted on me when I started playing ff xiii. Thats the first time I started playing it for about 2 to 3 hours daily. And it dies probably on day 7 of me using it like that. Sony should be ashamed of releasing such an expensive console in that state. And they never admitted this was a genuine issue.
rafpac6 bahaha, you’re complaining about Sony releasing a console with a known issue, yet don’t say anything on the 360 which is literally known for the “red ring of death” Also pretty sure Sony acknowledges the problem just like Nintendo did with its Switch screens being kind of crap, they went “ya we know it’s a problem, but it only affects like 3% of them, so it’s fine.” I could be wrong, but I vaguely recall them saying something about the yellow light after Microsoft had their major Red Ring issue.
The yellow light was observed in about 13% of the fat PS3 consoles in their first years of life. The red light of death was observed at 54% of released Xbox 360 on their first years of life. If Sony should be ashamed then Microsoft should have committed harakiri.
@@SIPEROTH I mean you're not wrong, and its also why they worked so hard on the One to make sure it didn't have the red ring issue. Also, they each sold about the same amount of consoles(within a few million), and yet over half of the 360s had that issue while a small percentage comapred ot that had the yellow light. Also to be fair the yellow light indicated a variety of issues from power, to a fan problem, to motherboard issues not just one or two like the 360's red ring did.
I wish I was more informed with what PS3 was PS2 back compact when I got mine in 2018. I got the fat model that isn't backwards compatible unfortunately, but on the bright side I got a really good condition PS3. Plus, the seller bundled 12 games with it.
If you want a CECHA01 to last forever it is mandatory that you change the thermal paste under both of the heat spreaders. I've successfully done this and installed CFW on the system then played MW3 and various other PS2 games for 10 hours straight and the highest speed the fan reached was 40%.
@@SheddysGamingI’ve done this to mine about a year and half (maybe more) ago and I am happy to report she still runs like a top. I will probably upgrade the psu to the aps231 and I keep my fan on 38% with the cfw
The PS3 Super Slim was my first console, I bought it with my first sallary... And I love it till this day. I don't boot it very often after I bought the PS4, the 3Ds and now the Switch, but it's still my most precious boy. Such great memories!
I have an E01. It's the Metal Gear Solid 4 bundle model. The full model number is actually CECHE01 MG. It was a good deal at the time and still is because of the backwards compatibility.
@Mc Carthy for PS3 I would recommend PSX-scene. And if you're worried about being on a low enough firmware to install custom firmware onto a launch model PS3. I believe if you're not on the one right before the newest that's out right now you should be able to install it using the newest method.
I just got a PS3 cech01. And wow the images looked good. And wow , I need to give it a bath as it's dusty. I've watched so many of you're videos that yeah, I can do that.

@@Kiritomens specifically, we never got a hardware based backwards compatible model (the really deairable one). Only softeare based meaning a much smaller list. And Sony didn't exactly keep that going.
Yeah and we also was charged more than the equivalent US$600 that those of you in the USA paid. Compared to us you got a bargain, the PS3 was the equivalent of US$850 in my country (The UK) at the time of release.
My 40gb CECHG01 is in cosmetically bad condition and dusty around the fans, but it has survived 13 years in my family, and a basement ceiling leak, (it got some water drops on it) but it has NEVER had any yellow light or never really crashed at all. A year ago, After 6 years i pulled it out of the basement and bought a few games for it, until the basement had the leak. After all that dust and play use, idk how it's still running like a dream to this point! I sometimes play on it when im bored.
I could have hooked you up with my 80 gb Motorstorm bundle that still works perfectly. All i've had to do was replace the Bluray drive in it back in 2013. I've been debating on selling it but I feel like it should go to a good home like yours. Lol.
I sold my brother my slim PS3 to get myself a fat model, gotta admit that is a beautiful machine, I got an 80GB model, interior was a mess, super dusty and thermal paste was dry. Got some thermal grizzly on, gave a deep clean with one of your teardown videos and works like a champ!
That's what I was saying. Hopefully he didn't bother updating it. I know mine can get custom firmware. I just haven't been motivated to hack it. I mainly wanna do it to play PS2 games since supposedly that's a thing
@@afistfulofpimples1745 On that model or All ? I think the minimum firmware has to be 3.55, but I have a CECH2002A (two actually) on CFW 4.85.1 firmware.
Did you know that thermal compound isn't actually that great at conducting heat? But it is better than nothing, which is what it's designed for, to fill the tiny gaps between the heatspreader and the heat sink.Ideally, the more metal to metal contact you can get will improve thermals.
I still have my backwards compatible 80GB PS3! (the one that came bundled with motorstorm) with the original packaging, warranty sticker intact and everything lol i wonder how much its worth now
I have it too but the warranty sticker isn't on it anymore because it really needed maintenence because it had so much dust inside of it considering i got it from my parents in 2007 i think
It was interesting to find out actually how much the MIPS R5900 GS+EE really cost Sony, which was less than $5 per unit. I think axing the GS+EE actually hurt the system, along with the premium pricetag. The RSX with it's dedicated RAM and even the Cell's difficulty to work with and code for weren't strong suits, but they weren't hurting it as bad. The loss of the emulation engine in the PS3 hurt it too, but by that time, the damage was done by the exorbitant pricetag. I would have maybe used Carbonaut Thermalpads on the other chips and maybe the CPU and GPU, or maybe Noctua NT-H1, but that's personal preference. Overall how clean the system looked is good to see. It really means it could have been taken care of really well. Good find. One good thing I liked about the PS3 was the BR-Drive had a very accurate error correcting system, because even some harder to read PSOne and PS2 games would work very well, even with light damage to the surface. I really wish Sony hadn't ended the backwards compatibility, but had kept supporting it. It really highlighted the system rather than hurt it.
the main issues ive found with these old ps3s is the thermo compound under the heat spreaders drys out and that is what usually causes the ylod cause it over heats and melts the solder under the gpu and cpu. sony used cheap thermo compound i delided my ps3 and put some thermo grizzly under it (artic mx-4 works well too) and then used a mod chip to speed up the fan to a constant 35% speed. it stays around 55c instead of 75 to 90c. yeah its loud but its cool and that what counts.
I would think almost any competent HDMI splitter works, but I'm 100% sure. I use a splitter by ViewHD and that works with my Elgato. It isn't fun having to jump through extra hoops to set it all up, but it works
The US 80GB PS3's didnt rely 100% on software emulation, the Emotion Engine and Graphics Synthesizer (comebined package you showed on that launch model) was swapped for just the Graphics Synthesizer ("GS" is the PS2 GPU) those units Emulated the CPU
@Mc Carthy Either the 20 or 60GB Launch models if your after full Hardware Backwards compatibility, as for sites? hmmm tbh since i havent had one in years, there should be plenty of enough information on both GBATemp & psx-scene about the PS3. Xbox Emulation the 360 itself is still in it's infancy, (Xenia) and has a rather low compatibility, OG Xbox? that i have not given much all thought as i still have my softmodded OG Xbox. but GBATemp again should have some basic info on atleast modding one. (though imho if your only after emulation, a used non ipatched Switch is good for the price. given it can handle upto Dreamcast/N64 with varying levels of excellent speed (if overclocked) / Gamecube (needs optimization) under L4T-Linux
I got one of these on eBay years ago, and it overheated within an hour of use and stopped working. Had to return it and buy a slim from Target, instead.
You can actually buy PS3 warranty stickers now. So it is more likely that the previous owner cleaned it (Maybe more), screwed it all back up and replaced the old sticker with a new one to make it appear like it has never been opened. I've bought an A01 and B00 models recently and both of them appeared to have a warranty stickers on them... Only difference was that the top could just be slotted off, there was no security screw holding it down. Thats were I assumed it had work done on it.
we need an update on these types of models for sure we have better quality technology available. hope we have at least better ps2 backwards compatibility like this on ps5 if they can do ps4 they can do ps2 and ps1 at least. memory cards and old controllers are a pain and the virtual memory card was very handy to use
If you want to play PS3 games, just get a slim. If you want to play PS2 games, you can just get a PS2. The backwards compatible PS3 is more expensive than the two combined, sometimes, and it breaks more easily and runs the PS2 games poorly. They didn't cut it because it was too expensive, it was because it didn't function with the new GPU properly and causes strange errors and about 10% of games didn't work at all.
Make a cheap PC for emulating so u can just play whatever older console games u want with upscale graphics. I did it and it’s been amazing. Of course it’s gonna be more money than buying a backwards compatible PS3 but that’s just my preference
Just found one of these on eBay by chance. It’s supposed to just be missing a hard drive, but I have a spare 80 GB model I can yoink the HDD from. Hopefully the rest of it works too! I’ll probably take it apart to clean and reapply thermal paste if it does, just so that I can help preserve it for as long as possible.

Does anyone know a company or a person who can fix my PS3 backwards compatible. I had a couple of companies try to fix it but no luck. Can anyone help plz. Thank you.
I still use my PS3 to this day, was actually just playing some MGS3 earlier today. I really regret selling my PS2 when I was younger, I'm definitely copping one from eBay so I can re-experience all the classics I had growing up.
I've got the E01 model so basically the software emulation version and I can say with Crash Bandicoot The Wrath of Cortex and Burnout 3 Takedown that there were some graphical hiccups so I ended up not really using the PS2 software as much with it which is a shame. The Wrath of Cortex does look better on the PS3 however.
I kinda prefer the 20gb over the other models, the lack of chrome makes it look way nicer. Wireless G is useless these days, and I'd put a bigger hard drive in regardless.
I really want this. It was pretty much the last "classic" (and great) Crash Bandicoot game to be released. Would be perfect right before a brand new entry to follow up the N.sane Trilogy
Still have my Phat PS3 along with a bunch of the old PS1, PS2, and PS3 games. Not to long ago, I was able to show my son why I love this system so much. Backwards compatibility.
Man, this video is a reminder of just how important backwards compatibility really is nowadays, regardless of what some individuals say. Eventually, there won't be any of these old consoles around or working. So, having a PS5 or Series X that are completely backwards compatible will be a godsend. I know I'm not the only one who still holds on to most of the classics from the good old days of the original PS, PS2, PS3, Xbox and 360. I have a huge collection, that I seem to enjoy more than these modern games. The modern games these days are designed to be grindy so that you get hooked on these microtransactions. A damn shame what gaming is becoming
I have a B01 that i got from Gamestop. I don't use it anymore because it keeps overheating and crashing when I would try to use it. Now it just sits on my shelf waiting to be fixed.
I wish the PS3 had come out with 512MB of XDR main ram and 512MB of DDR3 video ram instead of the 256 main and video we received............same thing for the xbox 360, wish it had come out with 1024MB of GDDR3 unified ram instead of the 512mb that we got. Reason I say this is that the xbox 360 came out in november 2005 and the xbox one came out in november 2013.......8 year generation. doubling the ram would have helped but I guess no one expected the world economy to die in 2008
The 2008 economic crash certainly didn’t help the consumer electronics industry, but generations have generally kept getting slightly longer, so it’s likely that Microsoft and Sony still would’ve planned their next platforms for 2013 regardless. The 7th generation was an anomaly since it was started prematurely in the first place. And for all the hassle that RROD caused MS as a result, it’s unlikely they (or anyone else) will take a chance on a head start launch ever again.
Just letting you know in case you live in a place where you pay for utilities, the original FAT PS3's all took 5x the power as a full size refrigerator so if that's a thing you have to deal with, keep an eye on that power bill if you leave it plugged in.

Did this happen to you!?!

UPDATE:
The rona stuff made it difficult to order the parts needed but they'll now be here in a week! I'll update on any progress!

Few things that came to my mind:
-I think it just boils down to keeping it clean and cool, those capacitors will die no matter what.

Well that and people just want to steal games and not have to pay for them - which is the number 1 use of "emulation"...
Facts. I concur. That's what I would be looking forward to
That's because modern console use moving parts.

A PS3 on that condition is a definite find, especially the model you found. I guess you'll be tiring it if the PS5 ends up being backwards compatible with the all previous games. However, I somehow doubt it will includ the PS3.

rafpac6 bahaha, you’re complaining about Sony releasing a console with a known issue, yet don’t say anything on the 360 which is literally known for the “red ring of death” Also pretty sure Sony acknowledges the problem just like Nintendo did with its Switch screens being kind of crap, they went “ya we know it’s a problem, but it only affects like 3% of them, so it’s fine.” I could be wrong, but I vaguely recall them saying something about the yellow light after Microsoft had their major Red Ring issue.
Literally, the same thing happened to me. I feel your pain.

Did you know that thermal compound isn't actually that great at conducting heat? But it is better than nothing, which is what it's designed for, to fill the tiny gaps between the heatspreader and the heat sink.Ideally, the more metal to metal contact you can get will improve thermals.

It was so satisfying to watch as you doing this whole thing with PS3!
Sad that we'll never get the PS2 BC back on PS3!
the main issues ive found with these old ps3s is the thermo compound under the heat spreaders drys out and that is what usually causes the ylod cause it over heats and melts the solder under the gpu and cpu. sony used cheap thermo compound i delided my ps3 and put some thermo grizzly under it (artic mx-4 works well too) and then used a mod chip to speed up the fan to a constant 35% speed. it stays around 55c instead of 75 to 90c. yeah its loud but its cool and that what counts.

You can actually buy PS3 warranty stickers now.

Learned how to reflow... brought it back... died two months later... Reflowed it again it lasted two weeks... Again I reflowed it and it survived for a couple more months... Gave up after that
Does anyone know a company or a person who can fix my PS3 backwards compatible. I had a couple of companies try to fix it but no luck. Can anyone help plz. Thank you.
computer booter
I still use my PS3 to this day, was actually just playing some MGS3 earlier today. I really regret selling my PS2 when I was younger, I'm definitely copping one from eBay so I can re-experience all the classics I had growing up.
You can play ps2 games on the ps3,btw.
I've got the E01 model so basically the software emulation version and I can say with Crash Bandicoot The Wrath of Cortex and Burnout 3 Takedown that there were some graphical hiccups so I ended up not really using the PS2 software as much with it which is a shame. The Wrath of Cortex does look better on the PS3 however.
smackdown here comes the pain i miss that game glad to see u still have and love it
rich review usa farted on my a01 and it stopped working
LMAO
I kinda prefer the 20gb over the other models, the lack of chrome makes it look way nicer. Wireless G is useless these days, and I'd put a bigger hard drive in regardless.
The Wrath of Cortex is getting a remaster.
The Wrath of Cortex isn't on that.
Damn, You got a insanely lucky with this buy.
@@billcook4768 Probably
Bill Cook what does that mean
23:05 The Ps3 or the game might be bugged because I don’t see John Cena...just the name. Weird.
I don’t think that’s true lol
1:08 "the B01 ... yeah! we got one!" (The Verge) 🤣
Does it have an all out hexacore? Rofl
OMG! That was the good luck screw sitting there on the top inside! I hope you put it back when you were done! BTW, you know who dislikes your channel? Guys who are also doing game channels and not having near as many subs as you. Haters... Keep on rocking dude! Great content.
I don't have any toilet paper 😭
Roadhouse
Toilet paper jokes. Clever. Original.
@@fjosh6 He been doing Roadhouse on every video for like a year, dont think he really gives a F about originality.
I recently got one of those backward compatible PS3's for £20, it's in the same condition as yours. Unopened, super clean and not loud at all.
I still have my bricked 60GB PS3, with the worst game ever stuck inside. Can’t even remember the name it was so bad.
Hope it's not 50cent bulletproof.
Loving the new setup, After watching the tour of the office I'm very pleased with how the new setup looks and it's pretty fresh!
Lmfao remember when 20 gigs was enough
Yeah if you had no games
After all these years I thought it was only the 60gb PS3 models that were compatible with PS1 games! I had to pause the video when you mentioned that any PS3 could play PS1 discs, and then popped my Hogs of War disc into my PS3 super slim straight away, so thanks for the info!
Ah...another “...and this is what they sent me” video. Let’s see how this one gets received
I got a used Model A PS3 about 4 years ago just because I thought it was the nicest looking model. Still have my PS2 Slim so I never really bothered with the backwards compatibility, except for one time I had a friend over and he didn't believe me when I told him my PS3 could play PS2 discs. Spent that day playing some classics.
