  • I thought that testing some relatively inexpensive .22 hollow point LR ammo would be of interest to my viewers. Therefore i decided to gather a few different brands and compare them for accuracy and performance.

Another informative video. I was surprised how the Winchester performed. It was the heaviest bullet at 40 grains, was rated at 1280fps, and expanded the best of the four. The Remington was a pleasant surprise. I think you are right, Remington is doing a good job with this ammo. It’s been awhile since I’ve shot the Golden Bullet, but as I recall the Remington was somewhat problematic back then. I’ve got plenty of each except the Winchester, which I will remedy on my next trip to my local Walmart. As you know, I love my .22’s!!!!

From my slight research into .22LR chambers, I have read there are standard "sporting" chambers as the common rifle, and for competition there are "match" chambers which have much tighter tolerance control and generally smaller dimensions. There is also a between chamber I forget the name of, which promises increased accuracy but without being so tightly controlled that it won't cycle anything but expensive match grade .22LR ammo. One gentleman had his Ruger 10/22 fitted with a match chamber. He was getting one cloverleafed hole at 100 yards, easily sub-moa. His ammo of choice was the Aguila Standard Velocity 40gr load as he said it seems to have the most consistent crimp on the bullet without rattle or moving around. He also split playing cards at 100 yards with the same rifle.

Long live your great .22 Series! Valuable information useful in making choices for our specific purposes. You tested a good sample of .22 ammo that is actually becoming available once again and which we Every Men are likely to purchase for plinking and small game. Thanks for doing what I should be doing, but don't... Thanks also for confirming my bias in favor of the Winchester 40gr. HP Super X for thumping bunnies and tree rats. Add to these the offerings from CCI, RWS, and Eley - which are of course unavailable in bulk.
We appreciate your continuing efforts, Sir. Pax

Thanks for another ammo test. Glad to see the Winchester bulk box actually perform well, for a few years ago, their bulk brand was becoming junk. Loose or bent bullets, grouped terrible in all my rifles, and would have the occasional off sounding weak shot that would drop well out of group. Many years back, Winchester SuperX in the 50 and 100 rd box was my go to brand for tight groups and consistent performance. It and the CCI MiniMag were always 1/2" groups or sometimes better at 50 yards. As time went by, CCI MiniMags became my trusted hunting ammo, but after seeing this, I will try them again. I like the idea of a 40 gr HP bullet at same or higher velocity of a 36-38gr HP, and your wet paper test proves this out.

The Federal Auto Match in 325ct bulk box for $0.05 a round has been a very decent round here, so have the Golden,s & Aguilla. The Winchester is $0.10 a round here so I don’t buy it, had trouble in the past with it not running well through some. Great Video, definitely fun to watch & learn.

I have always been a big green guy in all calibers (their Core-Loct bullets are great stuff), Remington ammo has always done well for me. That said, i have found the Federal 40 grain solid game load works very well in my rifles and comes in bulk. Aguila is great stuff and got their start as a Remington company. Course CCI is hands down, but you will pay...great demonstration and as always, great watching your channel.

I also love your .22 series Tom! ‘Regular Guy Ammo’ for sure. The Win. and REM. ammo are long favorites in bulk ammo. Accuracy is pretty dependent on individual rifles, each one is different, but both brands are pretty consistent. Mine seem to like CCI the best, but no bulk packs in those. Thanks for a great comparison, the wet newspaper really works well and is available cheaply for anyone to use. Thanks again, love your videos and down home casual style!

I really enjoy watching all your videos. I think i might need to take a break from watching because I think I've bought about 8 rifles since starting to watch. I've also always been a .22 fan as that was what my father always said was a gun he could afford to shoot. He said that when ammo was probably under a dollar. he was always into the Winchester pump 61's and 63 semiautos. So naturally that's what I also like. You've opened my eyes to other makes and I've bought a couple 581's and 510,511,&512 also a 121 pump gun. as well as a couple new to me Winchester as well. anyway, again thanks for the great work and the way you represent your sell in a soft kind way. I think we'd be good friends if we ever met. One more thing my father also directed me to collecting vintage .22 ammo. as he said it was something I could collect that was cheaper than a rifle. Funny all this was when he felt $150-$200 for 61"s and 63'S was crazy money. LOL

Enjoyed the video. I have had good accuracy with Winchester Power Point and almost same with Golden Bullet. Aguila has been good but that Federal was kind of a failure. I never tried to test expansion so was good to see. Thanks

    Great video Tom,
That Aguila 38gr. .22lr Super Extra Hallow Point doesn't group well at all in my CZ457 Jaguar. But the Aguila .22lr Super Extra 40gr. Lead Bullets group excellent out of my CZ457 Jaguar, and they also group excellent out of my Marlin 39A.

I enjoyed this video as now I find more pleasure in shooting 22 over any other rifle. I shoot a Winchester model 52 manufactured in 1923. The most accurate firearm I have ever owned. I shoot at 4200 elevation, I have found the Aguila standard velocity, 40 grains is liked by this 52 at the elevation. This bullet has given great accuracy at 50 and 100 yards.

I commented on another video about my bad experience with the Winchester Power Point bulk pack. My rifle HATED it but my biggest complaint was an average of 3 dud rounds per 25rd magazine. Even a second strike or rotating the round 180⁰ didn't fire. Maybe I got a bad box or Lot. The neighbor boys are enjoying having ammo to plink around the woods with now! They don't mind occasional duds. Heck, it's good practice! LOL

Thanks for the video. The most accurate “cheaper” ammo I’ve used was federal lightening. Doubt it’s still made. My Rem 541-T liked it but mostly squirrel hunted with CCI mini mag HP’s. That was back in the late 1980’s and early 90’s.

I'd like to see you do a video review of barrel tuners on your 22, I realize it's not threaded at the muzzle, but, split shaft collars that are slightly oversize-bore for the front 3 inches of the barrel, then using electrical tape, as a shim wrapped to the necessary diameter, works just fine. You may find this to be an interesting experiment.......

I had a Winchester Super X PowerPoint completely explode in my beretta ARX. Might’ve been a double charge. It was the only .22 I’ve ever shot that had noticeable recoil. Also had a ton of ftf’s from that box

I’d like to see a “head-to-head” accuracy test with your Rem 581 and Win 52B and any other rifle you’d like to compare to those at 50yds…..5-shot groups. Use what you know each shoots the best and definitely some Eley HP’s…..my rifle favorite.

Also, I’d really like to see an expansion or bullet performance comparing 22 HP’s to 22 round nose (RN). I’ve always read or have been told never use RN for squirrel hunting. I’ve always used HP’s but considered RN if they were accurate enough.

MAYBE I'll get a small box of Golden Bullets and give them a try since it's under new ownership. Avoided it like the plague for years because several of my guns had issues with it because it just flopped around on top of the case. And on top of feed issues there were always too many duds. Even Thunderbolts would run in the guns that hated Golden Bullets.

Just bought bulk pack of the super extra Aguils 40 gr. Haven't tried it yet. I got it for my handgun. I got round nose, don't expect expansion velocity from a handgun.

Hey good buddy, I want to ask you your opinion about two different types of 22 ammo. One is the Winchester vomit loads. I think the 32 grand or 36 grains can't remember which. And the second one I don't ask you about is the federal punch which is 29 grains nickel plated. What is your opinion about them? Two shells? Or have you had the expense? Any experience with them?

The best 22 ammo I've ever used in my Rem 541 T was american eagle 38 gr hp,s. One ragged hole at 50 yds. Have had the gun 30 years and wont sell it for 10 times what zi paid for it in 94 which was 290 dollars.

The Remington 540-580 design was in my opinion the best and strongest bolt action design ever incorporated. Six locking lugs, extremely fast lock time, perfect firing pin performance, and a 60 degree bolt throw all translate into a solid action.

When you were shooting those groups, it seemed to me that you were in a hurry. When I shoot from the bench, I take way more time for each shot and usually get much better groups at fifty yards. I wonder what your groups would have been like had you taken more time and effort with each shot.

Granted that with this particular ammo, it didn't perform as well as I had hoped, but I was testing high velocity bulk ammo. I have shot some tiny groups with it using standard velocity ammo. All of the Rem. 581's I own are very accurate when I feed them the right stuff. Here is a link to one of my videos that explains why the 581 is my favorite .22 sporter.
