      When you use the wrong words to describe your work....you lose all credibility. Max deviation is flat f'ing wrong.
      If you shoot like you talk, your reviews are crap. Blow you nose and do not pop you lips when you talk. Horrible video.

    You keep saying that you wouldn't want to shoot a subsonic beyond 50 yds. Actually, you will find that subsonic is MUCH more accurate at long range in a .22LR. When you shoot a lightweight bullet at 1200fps, it very quickly drops below the speed of sound. It goes trans sonic somewhere from 40-70 yds, usually. As it dips below the speed of sound, the pattern of the shockwaves change, and the bullet is destabilized. Once it is destabilized at 40-70 yards, it has the rest of it's flight time to wander all over the place. This is why you might see great groups at 50 from a supersonic, but crappy groups at 100. If you use a subsonic, it never goes trans sonic. OK, there is more drop, but you get yourself a 20-30MOA scope base, and you are fine out beyond 300. Yes, the bullet lands on the target like a mortar, but it's consistent and predictable.

    • @coreyd1474
      @coreyd1474  5 ปีที่แล้ว +49

      No you're absolutely right. Since this i've taken all the best to 200 and beyond and eley force will shoot up to 1/2 moa at 200. That was something i didn't really know about how supersonic 22 rounds are easily destabilized through the transonic barrier. Like you said, its basically coming straight down but its coming straight down consistently. I can shoot force out to 350 and not run out of dope on the scope. the rprf has a 30 moa base plus the reticle has 36 more MOA of elevation. Interesting stuff.

      Joel Curtin spot on the issue with hv at range is they all drop below super sonic around 76ish yards.. when the fall back below super sonic they get pushed off target. All long range 22 shooters is std velocity heavy for caliber rounds and elevate their scope to make up for drop.

      Fish R Relaxing I was shooting Eley Tenex, but I’m running out, and they are going for crazy money. For now, I’m switching to SK Long Range. The standard deviation is better on the Tenex (5.4 vs 7.5), but the SK is half the price.

    • @ontargetthomunclesam3926
      @ontargetthomunclesam3926 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joel Curtin yes but your rail better have a lot of MOA at least 30 at the elevation adjustment or your rings are shimed up quite a bit but you are right high velocity and supersonic stuff is real accurate over a hundred yards I've seen some people shooting at 500 yards

    • @joelcurtin9409
      @joelcurtin9409 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ON TARGET THOM uncle sam just 20MOA gets you out beyond 300. I’ve gone as far as 500, but yes, I was holding way above the target.

    A suggestion for these types of accuracy videos. When you are shooting 10 round groups, I would allow for
    operator or environmental (wind) error at least once. (I'm a mathemetician, throw out the best and worst, average the rest. I'm willing to live with leaving the best in since it would often be hard to pick out.) Throw out the worst flyer and post the results for a 9 round group. The CCI Standard for example would have been MUCH better.
    Good Video! I like this kind of information.

      Never throw out hits! Wind, flyier... doesn’t matter in a comp they count every round. You as a responsible shooter are responsible for every round you send down range.. this is why ammo testing and load testing is done for every specifics setup. Don’t discount a bad shot it’s part of the group.

      to be fair then. he would have to clean the rifle the exact same way every time and then allow the same number of flowing shots, along with 10 targets and pull out of the same box of 500 at random. then go to a indoor range as to cut out some X factors i guess strap the gun down as to reduce more X . but to say (X-brand) shoots the best is somewhat not fair as 22 rifles can be a bit picky. if one had suck time they could make a killer video.

    When you get right at the point of breaking the sound barrier then you start having group problems. Thats why the PMC at 910 FPS shot a good group, you gun barrel twist rate and the slower FPS works very well together. Once you get to around 1130 fps and above its a different story most of the time.

    Man, I love your documentation, time and $ you spent on this. Thank you. Seems .22 rifles are notorious for being ammo sensitive. I prefer subsonic and suppressed so no earplugs. My son just went two/ten at a 20 gauge empty shotgun shell at 115 yds. Shooting from prone, Savage MKII, BSA Glass, and CCI standard subsonic. Winds were from 0 to 10 and changing directions. Went 5/5 on 6” gong at 200. Ran out of adjustment and was just using holdover (no dots or lines), so I am proud of it.

I tested 7 different ammos in my RPRR and found that it liked the Eley Tenex, Federal Ultra Match and Eley Edge best in that order. The CCI 40 gr standard velocity was a close match as well until I went out to 100 yds. That’s when the Tenex really separates itself from the others. Great video!

    The SK and the Wolf are exactly the same ammo. They just change the outer box. The yellow SK is the Wolf Target and the Red box is the Wolf Match. You will get an occasional flyer out of both. Seems to be about 2 or 3 a box. The Lapua pistol king has a faster burning powder to get higher velocity out of pistol length barrels. The pistol loads tend to get really good standard deviations because all the powder gets burnt in a rifle barrel. They are kind of an "insider's secret" to getting match grade ammo a little less expensive. Works best in bolt guns because it burns hot and quick.

    Unless you have a small bore match competition rifle ie. Anschutz, Walther, Feinwerbau etc, it is nor worth to try the highest end ammo like Eley Tenex or Lapua Midas. The ammo is optimized for 50 meters and is good for 100 meters but they produce the best results in match bolt action rifles that have a special tight chamber that engages the bullet into the rifling. The 22lr headspaces on the rim and one way to secure the most consistent ammo is to segregate it measuring the thickness of the rim (Champion Shooters Supply sells a gauge for about $5) thus insuring all cartridges have the same head space. Not important in a regular 22 but it is in a $4000.00 competition rifle if one is shooting for points in competition against small bore specialists with the same rifles and ammo. I have an Olympic match Anschutz that can shoot 1/4" from the bench with Eley, Lapua or SK at 50 meters and less than an inch at 100 meters but it has a 100 gram (3 oz) trigger with the lowest lock time possible and a 27 inch bull barrel and weighs 14 pounds. Accurate Shooter website has an article of 75 brands tested with a match rifle at 50, 75 and 100 yards with the results from best to worse. Interesting stuff. If you can match your rifle to the ammo it really likes, your golden and it seems you rifle can shoot several brands very well.

    Hello Corey D.
    I have the same 22. I once read some thing from a Utube man called STKO. He was pointing out a problem with 10 22's where the bolt harms the first round ( I think thats' what he meant).
    I notice that my bolt really scars the round if it is closed with the mag in before the first shot.
    I now see that you always have the bolt back when putting in the mag.
    Is this a rule with skilled shooters? I am very new to shooting.
    Please. Jimmy D.

    • @coreyd1474
      @coreyd1474  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      its not necessarily just the bolt that causes scaring on the round a lot of it has to do with the way its fed from the magazine. thats why you see the super accurate rifles (vudoo, rimx, cz, tikka, bergara) have a feeding system where the round never touches the chamber. it definitely has an impact on accuracy if its a large mark on the round.

    I like the Federal target grade $18.99 per 325, they are a clean and reliable round for a great price (around these parts) but my favorite (not even in your video) are the (Walmart exclusive) Federal red box (fed reds) @ $19.94 per 550, you just cant beat this price per the amount of rounds, these actually look polished! 36gr. copper plated h/p 1260 fps and any copper plated bullet helps prevent fouling in the barrel after the round is fired! I like these not so much for my Ruger 10/22 rifle but my Ruger SR-22 handgun, it eats anything I put in it but I like these two rounds for the reasons mentioned. I can remember when the Thunderbolts ruled (pricewise) the market even as dirty and unreliable as they are but now you pay an extra $10 to spend an extra 10 minutes washing your hands when you get back from the range! Awesome video, thanks for showing the differences in these loads!

    My current preferred 22lr at 50 and 100 yards is SK Long Range AFTER I have used a Neal Waltz resizing die on the ammo. The die does two things that I identify as improving the precision (no, I have no targets to demonstrate). One, resizing ensures that for 360 degrees the 22lr driving rings are a consistent 0,225 in., and two, that the rings are 0.225 in. to ensure positive contact with the rifling grooves. Someone noted in the comments "remove the wax" from the SK 22lr ammo. SK does not use a wax lube; a light oil is used as with all German manufactured 22lr's that I have experience with. CCI and Eley 22lr use a wax

Here we can not get the ammo you can but using what I can get it seems to shoot tighter groups. at 50yd. and amazing at 30 and 40. where I mostly shoot. Using CCI standard can completely cover a five shot group with a dime, (5/16" center to center) on a good day. And have shot five groups of five all under 1" in one sitting. Would like to see some one who is a better shot, shoot the Mark II and think they can improve on this. At 75 not the eyes I use to be. As soon as the weather warms up, going to try to get out and shoot a lot more, hoping to improve and get all groups close to or under 3/8". ANY statistician would advise against it as it really skews the data. Also, I would suggest you ALWAYS take out the greatest outlier whether man error or ammo error or conditions error. Statistically, it makes more sense in judgment/comparison, but to also note WHICH ammo had the least significant outliers.

    Thanks for going to so much trouble and expense to test all these different kinds of ammunition and provide an overview of so many results. Kudos. I realize this video is four years old now and from your description it sounds like you have made a number of upgrades since that time. I don’t mean to be critical, although this is a critical comment, referring to the equipment in this video I’m afraid your rifle is just not very accurate. Hopefully with the upgrades you described you found better accuracy with a number of different kinds of ammunition.

    The effort here was great. I just can’t take these results as final for determining what type of ammo I should buy because I got different results with Norma tac 22 and CCI standard velocity. I managed to get a 5 shot group of 0.17” at fifty yards with CCI sv out of my Ruger precision rim fire
    Norma shot better than what you got as well
    I get it. Every rifle is different so buy each and see which one your rifle likes.

    @corey..... man.. I have a question for u......
    how you shoot in your ruger standard velocity ammo.. an then high velocity?
    with cci standard at 100 yard I have a 7/8 group... when I go with cci high velocity 36gn ... group spread at 1 inch but at least 8 inch high... * I don't have any more adjustment in my scope to sight in better..
    any advise? I mount a Tasco 6 x18 50mm but I guess my 30moa base is too much?

    • @coreyd1474
      @coreyd1474  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      22s traditionally shoot subsonic more consistant than HV and thats out of almost every gun. i have had a few types that performed ok like federal white box and eley force. my advice is if you're just shooting for fun stick with subsonic. no 30moa isn't too much.

  • @RU2AIM
    @RU2AIM 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    As it is typical for manufacturers to shorten their less expensive ammo by a couple thousandths in order for it to operate better in most all semi-autos, it appears the only ammo your Ruger likes is the higher end 'full-length' ammo, meaning, I'd have a real gunsmith check your headspacing and perhaps tighten it up a 1/1000 or so. Doing so should show a marked improvement in all groups, maybe you'll begin seeing one-hole groups with RWS & equiv.

    Liked your test very much, great speaking voice, great rifle much better than most of the ammo you put through it, some fishing weights in that lot, do you have access to ELEY ammo? This would bring your groups in really tight at 50 yards and very respectable at 100 Yards!

    When changing ammo types, were u Is reacklamating the barrel to each new type of bullet before shooting for groups? 22s really need a good 15-20 rds of each type of ammo through the barrel to reacklamate the barrel to that ammo. U will usually see a big increase in accuracy once u do so. U will also most likely see a difference in results if u were to redo the test in warmer temps with no snow and less wind. Im glad u actually chrono'd each of them, most other people just give u what the box advertises for velocity.

      i did this when i very first started getting in to 22s and you're right about the fouling rounds. howver.... if you're going from like ammo such as sk to cx only a few MAYBE 5 rounds max is all you need for fouling. but if you're going from something coated to something non coated you're right more rounds would be needed. thanks for the input!

    Man I have a 300 dollar air venturi avenger air rifle that at 50 yards will group with the absolute best 22 ammo out of that ruger "precision" I guess its probably due to the nature of 22 lr ammo just being sucky overall. Kind of disappointing. Want a ruger prf but I might as well stick to the pcp rifle.

    • @coreyd1474
      @coreyd1474  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      well thats not exactly apples to apples. the reason air rifles are so accurate is because you can regulate almost the exact same amount of air pressure per shot. i've seen guys have 1 sd per 20 rounds but its the nature of 22 for sure. i've always wanted to get an air rifle but don't want to really spend money on the tanks to fill it.

    What makes ammo get good groups is the fit to the barrel, imparting the twist by proper fit from the lands and grooves stabilizing the bullet in flight . This is why some ammo seems to work better than others in certain barrels for no reason, it has to do with the fit of a particular ammo . If the bullet is a little loose it doesn't get the right amount of twist to stabilize in flight , this is why a Guy will say " I only run a certain brand and type of ammo in my rifle. Check Each bullet width with a gauge to see what variation are present and which are more accurate in your rifle.

    u should take the norma tac ammo and shoot it at
    100 yards, weird cuz all the ammo u liked at 50 yards sucked for me at 100 yards lol except the sk and wolf.... i don’t shoot my rifle at 50 unless i’m sighting in.... i’ll shoot whatever’s on sale lol all those shots are a dead varmint at 50 or one hundred yards anyhow, when my club has a shoot i’ll go to the higher end stuff, but a lot of the cheaper stuff shoots better at one hundred yards than the expensive lupua.....
