Also they have dedicated separate starters to prevent wear and tear. Pretty sure a multi billion dollar car company can afford a couple engineers to create a failsafe lol
Most people when talking about the auto stop/start mention how they don't like the annoyance of the feature. He spoke about how the feature might cause excess wear and tear on the car. I thought I was the only person with that concern. I'm glad that Mark is concerned with things that affect ownership of the car. Other car reviewers don't even bother mentioning anything that concerns ownership and I'm glad that Mark does. It really shows his good character and makes me know that if something is up with a car I trust that he would mention any flaws.
Sad that he's wrong though. Start/stop feature do add more wear and tear but the cars with this feature have completely different starter motor etc to compensate for this extra wear and tear. Besides the thought of having your car run idle and wasting fuel while not using any of the output, is to me much more concerning than the half second delay it takes to take off. Didn't know people are racing from light to light where a half second would matter the world to them ;)
Vas Yan Yeah I think you’re right. The half second delay after the light doesn’t really hinder driving. I don’t think you should be racing from light to light anyways, not good for gas mileage or even safety for that matter. But I am grateful that mark mentions potential flaws about the system like potential wear. We won’t really know if the compensations they’ve made really work until we see cars with higher mileage and the services they’ve had to keep running smoothly. But I’m glad that he’s able to raise some of the concerns he has so we as the consumer can make the best purchase decisions possible.
I’ve seen videos on TH-cam that explain the start stop is really smart and actually lines up pistons to make them optimal for restarting once you press the accelerator. Also, it only kicks in when the engine is warm to stop wear. Essentially, I wouldn’t worry about it.
To turn off the "auto start stop" forever, try this. In the trunk under the floor cover is the battery. On the negative post of the battery is a small plastic connector that goes to the SOC sensor. The SOC stands for "state of charge". If you come up to a light and stop, if the car cannot determine the "state of charge" it will not turn off. This is because the car does not know if there is sufficient charge in the battery to restart and therefore it does not turn off. I did this in a brand new 330i Xdrive and so far no problems. It has thrown no codes, it reports no problems in the onboard systems check and every other option and accessory is still working. The only thing we noticed is that when we come to a stop, a small light on the dash illuminates that shows "start/stop" with a slash through it (think ghostbusters) that shows the car did not turn off. The car has been driven this way for several weeks now with no problems observed.
I always loved the stop start button - so sweet to know you are not burning gas when you don’t have to . Up to 230,000 km on my F 30 - no problems with the starter motor.the 3 series is a car now that is so good - it’s almost everything you want in a car. The fuel economy is amazing - I find it hard to critique the 3 series but what do I know - I drive the F30 from 2014 with 230,000 km with almost no problems ( fuel sensor, accessory belts dim navigation screen which they replaced under warranty. I am almost on the verge of getting the new one but I love the old so much and since covid - I am not driving as much ( I am so enjoying pocketing the $700 every month that I would have to pay every month on a new lease plus maybe $10,000 down. However , I am not sure how long I can hold out.

Jeff Norris for 3. The auto shut off can be cancelled (it’s a button beside the switch) and the sound of engine is great, I own the car. And for #2. Their are many affordable options like lease or finance. To me the price sits about right for what you get in it

I don’t find there’s a lot of plastic either when comparing to its rivals. I actually this this generation 3 series has the best quality interior yet. Everything inside looks and feels nice. Yes there’s plastic but they were smart and used it only where your hands will almost never contact. And the build quality is on Lexus territory. BMW must have taken a lot of notes from Toyota when they worked together to build the Supra. The interior is put together so tightly there’s I literally no squeaks or rattles. Even when you push on things. It’s seriously Lexus level solid A first for BMW
I dont have an issue with the plastics. They typically hold up. Better then on other manufacturers. Easy to maintain on a daily basis. Honda and Toyota have plastics and they command 35 to 40k depending on options. As far as manuals are concerned, most of customers sit in stop and go traffic working to pay for their Bmw.
