- My buddy just sent his LD20 and his RAT1 back home with some of his gear from Afghanistan. I thought we would take this chance to see how they held up long term on deployment.
Bought myself a RAT 1 solely on the strength of this video. If it's good enough for U.S. troops it's more than good enough for me.
Amen Paul 👍🏻
Bro that knife looks beast all worn out and moon dust its so cool looking
The Rat 1 is a relatively inexpensive knife (about $35.00 on amazon - March 2016) for the quality of what you get. Mine arrived today, Coyote Brown with the black blade. I changed mine to "tip down". This is years after your post, but if you still see him, thank him for his service and here's a shout out to the rest of our Troops. Thank you for your service, be safe and God Bless You All.
Hope he made it back safe 🇺🇸
Such a badass knife, so much character.
Because of this video is why I bought one of these knives years ago.
The RAT 1 just continues to impress. Respect to your buddy for hid service and glad he returned safely. We have our service people there too and they are often on my thoughts. Best wishes and thanks for the video.
best looking rat 1 i have seen! didnt think i wanted the black blade but after seeing this i cant wait to thrash up that black blade!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I got my Fenix LD20 the other day. Its a great light!
Thanks for your recommendation Hathcocked.
Dude, that stuff just looks sooo cool with the "moondust" and the scratched blade looks wicked!
Nice to see a vid about stuff that was taken to a warzone and made it back.
just ordered mine with the OD green handles and serrations. That knife deserves it's own parade! Tell your buddy I said thanks for his dedication and service to this country.
Awesome vid man. I would have liked to see the restoration too. I am glad it held up well for your friend and looks to have served him well. Thanks for posting dude.

I was watching one of these on ebay, watched some vids on it. This video took me from watching to pushing the commit to buy button, I even bought the black one so it would look sick after it wore off... awesome vid. Hope your buddy got home safe
KX.
thanx man i ordered my Rat 1 last week it will be here thursday or friday,it was because of this video that i made the selection thanx to your friend for serving and thanx to u for this video bro!!
Been carrying and using my rat1 folder for about 6 years now. Great great knife and the price is unbeatable!
Glad to see that your buddy got back safe.
You can't go wrong with a rat 1, it's just awesome. And considering using a knife as a screwdriver is a bad idea, I'm sure he finished what he was doing... When I was younger didn't had money so I used to carry cheap folders as EDC, once my bike's accelerator cable broke and i tried to use the knife as a screwdriver to, at least, make it back home... ruined the knife and the fking screw didn't come loose (and I had to walk several miles)
At least i'ts a good experience, now I don't leave home without a multitool.
out of all the rat 1 review vids on youtube this is the one that made me decide to buy a couple.
Jesus, I guess its nice knowing that some of the stuff on the cheaper side can still take a beating. Thanks for the video
Thank your friend for his service 🇺🇸 RAT 1 rock👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I was not a fan of that blade shape, but seeing that it endured what it did, i think i have found my new edc knife. Thanks for the video!
wow man, this piece deserves to rest in the showcase with all the dust on it too....nice think that can bring back memories after some time.
What I am really impressed with - THE USER. Thanks for everything.
I own an LD20 and I love it. It's not the brightest flashlight but it's one of the best. It won't let you down, and that's what counts.
Give him a welcome home and a big thanks.
Tell your buddy that i said thanks for serving! Kick ass review!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tell your buddy Ty and that I appreciate his sacrifice for us
that moon dust looks badass... where can I buy some lol.
I hear they're still enlisting recruits to go collect it...
Thanks for the video!
SOLD! I'll order one tonight. Thanks for the review, and HUGE thanks to your buddy for his service to all of us.
It's great seeing a RAT1 after some very serious use/abuse. I like mine much more now, even though I trusted it's ruggedness before seeing this.
Great vid!!
@hathcocked Thanks for the comment. I did contact Fenix and they were very interested to learn of my issues and very willing to help. My brother has another model and had similar issues, which he figured out to be a loose retaining ring inside the pommel where the button is located. He just tightened it and it works fine now. I'm going to try the same once I get it back from the ship I left it on. Thanks again and Happy New Year.
OK, that's the coolest looking Rat 1 ever!
Hope he comes home soon
that looks cooler than a brand new one I think I'm gonna get one
the rat-1 is def on my wish list
and lol looks like u got a "gorrila hand" aswell, i recently bought one, seems ideal for filming my splendid self in a forest since it can grip to tree branches n stuff :D
@MarcoMontana22 I heard him fine. Nice video with some great gear.
how's the blade doing today? this is awesome
I agree you should not use a knife as a screw driver but i have no complaints about an active soldier using it as one. I am sure there are times when you have got to do what you have got to do. Great vid its was nice to see how everything help up after actual use.
+Mitch Kellar maybe the new rule should be, never use your knife as a screwdriver unless your life depends on it.
couldn't agree more.
just orderd the knife in satin finish because of the black finish wearing off..
nice vid and interesting to see how it took all that beating:P
Looks great. A good honing and putting it in a case for the kids sounds good. I'm intending to add one to my collection soon.
Big question, any issues with the LD20. I have had mine for almost a year under quite hard use round the water, engine rooms, sand, grease. I love it. But it started simply not turning on from time to time. No matter what I do it just won't turn on. Contacts all clean and new batteries, it just on occasion will not function. So curious if any of that was experienced?
don't have but now I'm buying it
I like the sweet click when you open it. that's quality right there.
very nice! got me a rat on order!
I have beat my model1 to hell and back & she still locks up perfectly. It's a wonderful knife and IMO it can't be beat at the price point. Comes wicked sharp.
I got a Rat 1 but yours looks way cooler! What was under it?
That knife looks like it has been used many times well beyond "with in reason". Still, it looks like it held up really well all things considered.
like the modified tip! ;)
i have a new found respect for liner locks now...
Fuck table top-armchair reviewers, or the so called "destruction tests" that border the ridiculous. This video shows the results from REAL field testing.
Thumbs up for your video. One of the few really serious knife videos out there.
Very cool
Old vid but a good one. My daily carry is a Rat 1 and a streamlight. Knife and a flashlight boys and girls, because you never know 🤷🏻♂️
I'm buying this as soon as the bank processes the money I just paid in
I was going to go with the satin finish but the black looks awesome all worn down :D
@hathcocked
thanks ive allready learned how to, again thanks
is it as good as a spyderco mili and pm2?
How long was he deployed and how often did did he use the light ?
Yeah, my version of the LD20 lasts 70+ hours if you use it just on the lowest setting. Awesome light.
Both of these devices - AMEN
Merci
QUESTION!!!!!
how come the point end of your knife looks different than the point on my knife
(not the point itself but the tip, your looks bent down)
ah, they only had one size where i bought mine
to screwdrive, dont use the tip, use the back of the knife blade
Can I use energizer lithium batteries in this light?
do you know how to make those knots? i guess thats paracord right
if you do, can you make a video please on how to make them?
I'm gonna buy one of these but the satin finish. I can see getting the black paint on for tactical purposes if needed (until it all scrapes off!) but otherwise the satin finish is way better choice. Looks very ugly when the black paint scrapes off.
do you know if he used it in combat?
That RAT looks sick beat to hell like that ( poor knife though but man it took a beating)
You can fix up that RAT 1. Just grind it into shape and it will get years more use.
There's a face on the handle on 4:54
@hathcocked btw... love the username. carlos hathcock was an absolute beast.
@mrmilleniumproof Are you talking about VG1 steel? Yeah, that's the fame, nice sharp edge but weak, brittle.
Best knife review ever
do you really expect him to answer that?
wow, never saw anything from this guy, but he has my EDC minus 1 S&W 442 moon clip and a Glock 27 on his table. Apparently great minds do think alike.
thats great, but hey as a light why not a zippo lighter, its metal caseing so won't bust or leak... i mean if he can get his hands on fluid to fill it every week or so... or even a bic lighter cuz he wont need to fill it + it holds alot of fluid... tell him thanks for serving ;) and also nice vid im gana sub right now ;) i'd like to see more of these types... hmm maybe see how a BM 710 does in the future , later dude!
marines or army
Deployed you make due with what you have.
you got a tripod lying in front of you why not use it?
im geting 1
My most used knife in the military was .................. Swiss army knife!
yes i would rather buy second hand
RAT - RAT - RAT
RAT 1... fer shuwa
wow a knife that powerfull for only 30 dollars
Hi man you should really not give him shit about it, you never know what a solder has to do to survive...
haha
Now thats what I call a "desert tan" color ... Oh wait no its supposed to be black ...
Sand in Afghanistan is gold? LOL
How about sending an American Serviceman and American knife? American military personnel using Chinese products while deployed just isn't right.
What company makes a full us made knife anymore?
Spyerco. Boothill Blades. Tops. Kershaw.
+jeph4life I dont know much about tops and boothill knives but they seem to be manufactured here in the us. Spyderco is assembled in Japan. kershaw makes knifes both stamped U S A, Japan, and china (just a stamp but I will say the U S A version is better quality).
I get what ur saying tho about a US service man using a imported knife....
By the way, I wasnt trying to start a fight or argument with anyone so thanks for the civil conversation. Thats hard to find in a comments section these days.
