  • EDIT Dec 9 2019
    If you would like to get an Ontario RAT 1 or 2 here are some links for those:
    50 variants at WMK - whitemountaink...
    or on AMAZON:
    GERMANY - amzn.to/356DhZA
    USA - amzn.to/356CKa2
    CANADA amzn.to/2E2LPEM (notice that sellers for the RAT knives are shipping from USA, and if you want to buy from USA I HIGHLY recommend White Mountain Knives because they cost less AND because the owner ships items quite discreetly with very high odds that Customs will not intercept and confiscate the package.
    END OF EDIT
    The Ontario RAT 1 was introduced years ago, with AUS8 steel, which is a reasonable entry level steel, BUT now you can get the RAT 1 with D2 steel which makes this knife a WINNER all over again. If you are not familiar with D2 steel that is all the more reason why you should get this knife with D2. I firmly believe that you will not be disappointed.
    I could find on Canadian vendors who have the RAT with D2 steel and only a few vendors in USA who have it.
    If you want an orange handle your best bet, at time of writing, is KnifeWorks.com where you can get this knife for $33.95USD :
    www.knifeworks....
    They may have a greater selection when you go to check it out.
    The next great choice is BladeHQ, they still have several scale options with D2 steel at $39.95USD and UP, even some with a coated blade and Carbon Fiber scales = over $60USD :

    I'm pleasantly surprised to see some of these "must-have" budget knives coming out in D2 instead of the more common 8cr13mov and aus8. I just saw last night that the Zancudo comes in D2 now also. Maybe I can finally get my first D2 blade. As much as I'd want to get all the knives, I want to start slow and maybe get some different steels while I'm at it.

    • @CanadianCuttingEdge
      @CanadianCuttingEdge  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This knife came out win AUS8, that is it's normal steel. The D2 are special runs so if you want one you have to get them now while you can, they won't be available for long.
      I really like D2, it used to be a super steel when it first came out but technology keeps on running forward and now it is sort of a mid grade steel. I also really like the American 440C, or the Chinese 9Cr18MoV, and the Swedish - Sandvik 12C27. These 3, and others, are some more steels that are not quite mid-grade but are enough better than most of the true budget steels to be worth looking for in knives.
      The other 440's are a fair bit below 440C, and all of Sandvik steels are quite good, none are poor grade steels.

      I got the zancudo in d2 on ebay. If you want a particular knife with a certain steel, scales, color, etc then search for it on ebay then save the alert so you will be notified when they are put up for sale or auction. Every type of knife will eventually be listed because collectors clear out their collection or life events leave people needing extra money. A knife collection is like money in the bank when in new condition.

    Obviously, th elimited edition got such good response, they are now quite common a year later. I love my Rat's in D2. I EDC the Rat2 and use the Rat1 for heavier duty like when I go into the woods. Great knives, and the D2 holds an edge great.

      It was indeed a smart move - I am just surprised it took them that long before they produced it in a better steel than AUS 8, and almost all knife lovers are thankful

      Yeah, it is a nice knife. The only other Ontario knives I have are the Old Hickory knives, but I should get my hands on some more of their lower priced knives, cause I cannot afford most of what they produce.

    Best deal in an everyday carry knife with a good steel. I have one but am planning on getting 2 more. This knife rocks. Modded the plasric where you disengage the liner lock with a dremel and some fine sandpaper and it is much easier on my finger when opening.

    • @CanadianCuttingEdge
      @CanadianCuttingEdge  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very cool that you did your own mod on the knife, good on ya. This is indeed a classic knife now, it has a great shape in both the handle and blade and with D2 it is very often my go to EDC knife too.

  • @ScottieG59
    @ScottieG59 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have a D2 version on the way, eventually. My AUS8 version works fine too and outperforms what the specifications would indicate. I find the design works well for food preparation as it presents the belly very well. The stock scales are nylon. G10 is a composite of layers of glass cloth and epoxy resin. Cold Steel demonstrates the great strength of G10, even without liners.

    • @CanadianCuttingEdge
      @CanadianCuttingEdge  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ontario Knife knows how to heat treat their AUS8 very well indeed.
      I think I did correct myself in the video that they are nylon. I am just so used to saying G10 that I tend to say it before thinking of it.
      Thank you for the info on how G10 is made. I had read that it was a polymer with glass fibers in it, I guess I read wrong. Like I tell others, it is always good to double check your facts. A lesson I should have practiced a bit more myself it seems.

    • @ScottieG59
      @ScottieG59 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Polymer with glass fibers is known as fiberglass reinforced nylon (FRN) and glass reinforced nylon (GRN). They make a very significant improvement to plain nylon, in heat tolerance, tensile strength, chemical resistance, etc. G10, by the way, was originally developed for circuit boards.

    • @CanadianCuttingEdge
      @CanadianCuttingEdge  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am familiar with GRN and FRN. My last occupation was as a network technical support guy for a school division, so I know a bit about those materials, I just didn't double check what G10 was made of.

    The black hardware is true for everything but the Carbon fiber version which is all black except the pocket clips screws, and the pocket clip is satin finish as well.

    • @CanadianCuttingEdge
      @CanadianCuttingEdge  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for that Joseph. I had only used the info that the rep on my email to Ontario knives told me, I hadn't gone and verified it against every model. It makes sense that if they use black on all their other knives (to make the hardware stand out visually?) that they would go the opposite way and put satin hardware on the carbon fiber version.

    Don't have a folder in D2, yet. Have you seen the Y-start knives in D2 at gearbest? Waiting to see what the reviews say about them.

    • @CanadianCuttingEdge
      @CanadianCuttingEdge  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes I have a review up on the Y-START JIN01 - and it is my favourite full size folder under $25, by a good margin too. And I have the JIN02 and am going to be recording the review on that one later this week. They are very good knives. I have to go to the dentist, but when I get back I will put links GearBest of those knives in the JIN01 review so that you can still get them at bottom price and I get a tiny commission.

      Got a JIN02 just a few days ago -- so far, so GREAT!! Anxious to see Canadian's review, but right now I'd say "get it ASAP" as the black and "brown" models are on special from GearBest (IIRC, under $16 -- for how long, I don't know).

    • @CanadianCuttingEdge
      @CanadianCuttingEdge  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yup, it's always hard to make that decision. I usually go for getting the one I like more, even if it costs a few bucks more. $3 is just two cheap coffees or one at a lot of places, I can pass on getting that coffee for the sake of a knife. :)

      I know a few guys who add grip tape of various sorts to many of their knives. I wish they used a grippy G10, then one wouldn't need that.

    I was really considering a BM Mini Griptilian with a 20CV blade, but here in Canada they are at least $200 CAD. I can get the RAT 1 with D2 steel for around $60 CAD. It would certainly do what I needed it to.

    • @CanadianCuttingEdge
      @CanadianCuttingEdge  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The RAT1 with D2 is indeed capable of doing just about anything a person wants to do with a folding knife, it is such a GREAT design and that steel is nothing to sneeze at.

  • @bdpf1744

    I'm still planning on getting a Rat 1 one of those days, just don't know when.
    I have the G727 and find it to be a great knife, very comfortable. I would love if Ganzo would release a CF version of the G727.

      BTW, if you are not a subscriber to The Fatman channel, I would suggest you subscribe. I entered your name to win his next GAW, the same knife as in this review LOL! but you need to be a subscriber to win. I hope you do win ;)

    • @CanadianCuttingEdge
      @CanadianCuttingEdge  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wish that they would make CF versions of pretty much all of their knives that are in the G7xx series. A couple of them have 3D scales and would only work if the CF was solid and not a laminate so I would excuse them for not makeing a CF of those. (I am thinking of the G711 and G712).

      @CanadianCuttingEdge  8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video. I've always admired the knife, but I own only a RAT 2. I have a number of
    Ganzo G727M knives that are clearly inspired by the RAT 1. I think you called the handle shape "candy bar". I never heard that description before. I call it "canoe" shaped. As you said it is a design that just simply works and very well at that.

    • @CanadianCuttingEdge
      @CanadianCuttingEdge  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use candy bar shape because a lot of the classic candy bars are shaped a lot like that, like the oh-henry and snickers etc. Maybe the name is new with me. Canoe makes sense too, probably more sense than candy bar. :)

    IMO, a clean, exceptional design (because of its simplicity *and* functionality). Does any one know who designed the model from the very begining ?

    • @CanadianCuttingEdge
      @CanadianCuttingEdge  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am sure that there is somebody who knows, and that person is probably not the one with the patent. Is my cynicism showing?
      I have no idea who the original designer is but it sounds like it is Randalls Adventure Training who gets that credit, but I hold to that quite lightly, there is a good chance I am wrong.

    I've almost pulled the trigger on this one so many times. It's definitely high om my list. Actually i might go for the RAT-2 since it's a bit smaller and would be perfect for my work-EDC.
    D2 is not necessarily amazing to me. I have a Colt ct591 with D2 blade, that managed to get (a lot of) rust stains within an hour of carrying it in my pocket.
    Nice review of this classic though :)

    • @CanadianCuttingEdge
      @CanadianCuttingEdge  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't looked for it, but a RAT2 with D2 would certianly be very welcome in my collection too. D2 isn't amazing, but I do think that it is better than the budget steels that we normally see on low priced knives. (Opinion. - I am not an amature metallurgist or steel guru)

    • @NastyRenegade
      @NastyRenegade 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Neither am I. :) So perhaps the D2 on my colt isn't that much D2 after all. or maybe bad heat treatment.

    • @CanadianCuttingEdge
      @CanadianCuttingEdge  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      A heat treatment can certainly make or break any steel. That much I know for sure. For example Schrade does a GREAT 8Cr13MoV because of their heat treatment (most of the time) - other mfr's 8Cr13MoV can be garbage. ...

      If you are going to often use it with dirty hands then it will show the dirt quite easily. Thankfully there are a good number of colours that you can find this knife in. Just make sure you check if you are buying the D2 or the AUS8 type blade.

  • @tubepiggy888
    @tubepiggy888 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    You did not mention if the rat 1 was milled out, a problem with the old one. I did with mine, after wearing out three drill bits, I menage to cut thirty grams off. Five Oz's. is lighter than the old one is I am not mistaken. T-piggy.

    • @CanadianCuttingEdge
      @CanadianCuttingEdge  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, by drilled out, you mean the liners were made lighter, aka skeletonized. Well, I didn't mention that because mine isn't skeletonized. My AUS8 one isn't skeletonized either. I checked the weight and it is accurate in the video.
      Generally, in the low budget knives they mfr does not do that with the liners so instead of always saying that a knife is not skeletonized I only say when they are skeletonized, like it is an extra feature - which is really what it is sinch the majority of knives in that price range are also not made lighter that way.
      I have never tried to lighten a knife by drilling out the liners, I guess that it because I really don't mind heavy folders. If I was that concerned with ounces I wouldn't be such a big man. LOL.

      I don't know why they put an M behind the numbers. I asked what the M meant and they said it stands for Medium, but the next logical question is if they made a Large or a Small, and the answer is no. After doing the M on several knives they stopped using it.

    What do you think of the new Cold Steel Pro Lite? Could you make a review for it?

    • @CanadianCuttingEdge
      @CanadianCuttingEdge  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey PowerMad, thanks for stopping by and commenting. I have not yet checked out the Cold Steel Pro Lite before, so I spent 15 minutes just now checking it out. It looks like a pretty cool knife. I prefer the clip point over the tanto, and not because of the easier sharpening but just because I am not too much of a tanto guy. The backlock that Cold Steel does makes this a VERY appealing knife. BUT: The lowest price I can find for it here in Canada is $62 so that is about double what my average knife review knife costs, and that puts it in the "Buy 4 or 5 knives from this category per year" list. It's crazy how most knives cost almost twice as much in Canada , even after the $ exchange rate is factored in. I will keep my eye out for any extra special prices in USA for the knife and try to import it, if you see a price better than the $26 I saw so far (KnifeCenter and Amazon) then please let me know and I will jump on it immediately. You can always email me directly at CanadianCuttingEdge AT gmail.com

    • @CanadianCuttingEdge
      @CanadianCuttingEdge  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, I don't know of any version of a RAT 1 that has a lightened liner. Do you know of any?
      I don't mind a heavy knife myself but a lot of people do. Whenever a low budget knife has any skeletonizing I will try to make sure I mention it in the review. If I don't I will feel like I failed my viewers.

    • @pauldelaney6380
      @pauldelaney6380 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have never handled this new version of the Rat 1 but I thought that Ontario might mill the liners out, considering the other excellent upgrades to the knife. It would be a natural step to really max out a good design. . Jake I don't think you would ever fail your viewers.

    • @CanadianCuttingEdge
      @CanadianCuttingEdge  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Paul.
      Re liners milled out. I would have thought too that Ontario would mill out their liners but I doubt that they can afford to. The profit margins that us Westerners are used to just can't handle those kinds of expenses. I mean, we have each person/org in the retail process that wants to earn 2x what they pay. So the seller, retailer, sells for $35, that means they bought it for $17.50 or so. But they got it from a distributor, who also wants to double his money, so they sold it for $17.50 which means they bought it for $9.25. Who did the distributor buy it from, the shortest hop is from the company that has their brand name on the knife, so let's say OKC sold it for $9.25 but they bought it (in a sense) from the factory that makes it - who also need to turn a profit, so the cost to make the knife might be as low as $4 to $5 on a knife that we buy for $35 (and that is with the shortest number of sales to get to us) At that price who has money to mill the liners? Well Ganzo does, on a knife we can buy for $24 - I just don't get how Ganzo can make money.
      Now how did our conversation turn into that? I dunno, but I do know that Ontario Knife Company makes good knives and I would have thought that they would mill out the liners too.

    I want one but the price in Canada. 35$US darn that is good. If it come back at that price I am a taker for sure. Cant believe the price in the US.

      Great vid Jake. D2 make the RAT 1 worth the prices cause AUS 8 is not to par.

      Exactly. If someone wants a RAT 1 then they should keep looking until they find one with D2 because it is worth the little bit extra. There are businesses in USA that will accept USA orders on your behalf and then forward them to Canada for you. Their prices are a bit too high for me, so I use a friend or my sister to forward stuff to me that I can't get shipped directly from USA to Canada. But KnifeWorks.com does ship to Canada, that is how I got mine afterall. Funny how at KnifeWorks the D2 RAT's are cheaper than the AUS 8 ones are, by a good chunk of $ www.knifeworks.com/search.aspx?find=RAT+1+

    Pretty much at the top of my list of "Must Get This Budget Blades!" Kinda wish Ontario was making the RAT 2 with the D2 steel (heard hints they might later on); the related "ESEE" Avispa and Zancudo models have models w/ D2 steel available.

      RAT2 with D2 would be a knife that I would definitely try quite hard to get my hands on. I have a traditional Zancudo but would like a D2 or other better steel on that knife as well, it is so comfortable in hand and the blade geometry makes for a nice knife indeed.
