In the beginning of "Mark", we see Diego at school in Spain, which implies that it occurs before Mexico declared its independence in 1821. In "Mask" Captain Love uses a revolver (which wasn't developed until the 1830s); therefore the film is set much later. so your theory actually works.

Basil Rathbone was an epic fencer in real life, champion fencer of the British Army, decorated for valor in WWI. He also fenced as the villain against some of the best swashbuckler characters in the movies, not only Tyrone Power but also against Errol Flynn. Later in life, he reportedly gave Power the prize in a contest against Flynn, saying Power could have fenced Flynn into a cocked hat. Ironically, one of the last swashbuckler roles Rathbone played, again as a villain was in the Danny Kaye comedy "The Court Jester." Rathbone was past his prime in that film but he did compliment Kaye, who had only had a few weeks of fencing lessons. He praised Kaye's athletic ability and said he did well in the hilarious fencing scene in the climax of that really entertaining film.

Danny Kaye was brilliant, especially in his seamless transition back and forth between his two fencing personas. Great tongue in cheek satire.

    Hello!
Basil Rathbone (by the way it is pronounced Basil with a short 'a' as in cat) was twice British Army Fencing Champion. In all of his films he was the superior swordsman, but had to lose to the hero. Rathbone won only twice on screen, as Tybalt gainst Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet (1936) and against the friar in The Mark of Zorro (1940). Rathbone coached both Flynn and Power and found Power to be a truly gifted amateur swordsman who could fence Flynn "into a cocked hat."

I was fortunate enough to acquire one of the Zorro swords used during the filming of "Mask Of Zorro" some years ago. It wasn't the one used by Antonio,
but used by one of his stunt doubles. Still very cool though. To this day I have it on display, in my home, right in front of the film's teaser poster. It's a huge
image of Antonio, holding up his identical sword, and looks really cool just behind my stunt double sword. As much as I still enjoy the classic 1940 version,
I have to say that, sword, or no sword, "The Mask Of Zorro" (1998) is truly the superior film. I think it's the greatest Zorro film ever made, with Antonio making
    this role all his own.

I own both movies on DVD. The problem I have with the Tyrone Power movie is he creates Zorro seemingly out of mo where. In other words, there’s no build up or explanation as to why he adopts the Zorro persona. It’s just that - suddenly in one scene - we see him dressed in black and riding his horse through the town. But where did he get the idea in the first place? It’s jarring the way he just one day became Zorro without letting us, the audience, understand how he chose that disguise and character.

  • @fionatsang9353

Basil Rathbone was an extremely good fencer; he was two-time British Army fencing champ, legend has it he was so good they had to get an Olympic fencer to body double for Tyrone in parts of the big duel scene. Tyrone was apparently very good as well; Rathbone said he was the best fencing opponent he ever had onscreen, in his words Tyrone 'could fence Errol Flynn into a cocked hat'.
If you haven't seen it already, I'd recommend the Disney Zorro tv series (1957). The same fencing choreographer Fred Cavens worked on all the big Zorro productions of the time: the Douglas Fairbanks silent film, the Tyrone Power film, and the Disney series starring Guy Williams. Cavens said of the three Zorros he taught to fence, Fairbanks was the most flamboyant fencer, Power the best student, and Williams the most talented. Guy Williams and his Zorro villain, Britt Lomond who played Capitan Monastario, both previously learned fencing at the school of Aldo Nadi, a multi gold medal and championship winning competition fencer who is considered by some to be the best sabre fencer who ever lived. As you'd expect, the duels between them are pretty outstanding, and the whole production was very high quality, one of the most expensively made tv series of its time.

  • @Jakethehitman73

I greatly prefer the silent Zorro to the 1940's version. I will point out that Mask of Zorro is the only other Zorro film I've seen where the Zorro character wears a fake mustache as a disguise, so I think of Mask as a sequel to the Fairbanks version.

Excellent review. As I turn 60, it's nice to see the younger generations appreciate the Classic Movies from Hollywood's Golden Age.
My favorite Zorro movie is The Mark of Zorro; however, I think where the narrator praised Tyrone Power (one of my favorite actors) for how his performance captured the essence of Don Diego, I think that was the one flaw with the 1940 version. Not enough action scenes with the Zorro character.
The 1998 version was a very good movie and the reason why Catherine Zeta-Jones was able to duel and fight as opposed to Linda Darnell, in the 1940 version because the actresses were in two different eras. Today Catherine Zeta-Jones's character would be a "Mary Sue" and act like a "Karen".
There were 5 serials and movies between 1937 and 1949, where one version had a lady Zorro called "Zorro's Bull Whip", and Clayton Moore who would play the Lone Ranger in the 1950s played in the movie "Ghost of Zorro" from 1949.
Guy Williams was very popular in the 1957 to 1959 series. The series ended after two seasons due to a financial dispute between Disney and the network over ownership of Zorro. During the legal battle, however, Disney kept the franchise going for a few years in the form of four new hour-long Zorro adventures aired on the anthology series. It was a shame the series was cut short.
It's unfortunate Zorro, John Carter of Mars, The Shadow, The Phantom, The Lone Ranger The Green Hornet (who's related to The Lone Ranger), Jonny Quest, and Tarzan amongst others are all passe heroes now. Even though there have been cartoon versions of some of these characters like Disney's Tarzan over the last 20 to 25 years most of these characters probably won't have another TV show or cartoon.
I liked these characters growing up, but I think these characters are too outdated for today's audiences. The last two Lone Ranger movies were complete flops (even with Johnny Deep as Tonto), the 2011 Green Hornet movie was awful, and the 2016 live-action Tarzan movie was also terrible. I didn't know there was a 2016 Tarzan movie until last year.

You all are making the mistake of believing what you see on screen is reality. Both Zorros are coreographed THEATRICAL duels that have no connection to what real sword fights were actually like. So, no one won or really disarmed anyone and no one actually won these duels. Also, if you do your reasearch., you will find that the Zorro stories are set in the wrong historical period, the costumes incorrect for the period, the swords are competion sabers, not period correct weapons, and not period fencing styles. What you see is done for dramatic effect with no attempt at reality. As an entertaining Hollywood film, the Power Zorro remains my favorite for the reasons you have pointed out.

The 1940 Mark of Zorro is odd in that he appears in the film with two different kinds of masks and doesn't appear in costume at all in the last 20 minutes when the climactic sword fight takes place and the revolution!

Because that was the idea. That version is about a hero who keeps on being what he is even though he does not longer show people his true identity.
