Philodendron Birkin - THE MOST UNSTABLE PLANT

  • The Philodendron birkin has gained a lot of popularity with houseplant collectors. However the Philodendron birkin has a glaring issue. Its very unstable. I see tons of people on facebook asking what is going on with their birkin. These plants have turned out to be extremely inconsistent and unstable but still beautiful and worth having. Its been fun to see all the variations the leaves have taken on and im excited to see how it looks years from now.

I bet the three searches were either from the company who named it, researching the name before publishing it. Or could be some first samples that got released as a trial.

The number in the google trends is not 3 total searches. The number doesn't indicate volume but a number relative to the total Google searches on a scale from 1-100.

I think the variegated leave differences makes this particular plant interesting. I just got one from Walmart and I really like it. Guess it depends on what someone wants from their plants. I lean more toward the offbeat and unique.

Me too! I've seen Birkin EVERYWHERE. But when I found one with funky variegation I fell in love. It reminds me of a small version of my pink princess!!! It reminds me of a white princes with some pink. How could I not be obsessed with that esthetic for the price 😍

The Birkin right now has to be the most fun philodendron on the market. So many plants thought to be stable flooded the market and now we have all these beautiful mutants. I have 10 Birkins which all seem to be pretty stable except for one. And it's so exciting to watch my little mutant grow

I have a mutant Birkin and love it. A friend has one with stable variegation and I find it boring. Mine has a different variegation on each leaf and is unique. One leaf started out almost white but has developed more green. I look forward to seeing each new leaf as it opens and then matures. Nature is cool.

I love how it looks now!! I have one that was a recent purchase and it's just normal pinstriped. I read online that the old leaves are green, the new leaves are white. I don't know if that's true or if I even remembered it correctly. But, I love white leaves so if and when mine starts turning white, I'll know to keep an eye on it and if I have to, I'll put it in a lower light situation to force the green back into the plant. Hopefully that will work but I don't know.

I would love to see an update on your little Berkin project. I am goofy and acully just bought a nice looking Berkin with one red stem with 4 or 5 leaves showing the Red Congo. I just watched your video a week or so ago and HAD to buy this plant when I saw it just to watch what happens. The other Berkin I have had for maybe a year gets the fairly white leaves but they tend to get more green in them as the white leaf matures.
Seeing this red congo shooting out of the plant I bought today way above the green Berkin part gave me an idea to maybe under a bigger red congo with the berkins around it and do a nice floor plant.

Spike is probably from the Costa Farms Trending Tropicals release for big box stores. Mine not from CF grows nearly all white leaves, sometimes 2 or 3 at once then they slowly turn green after new leaves form. I bought a CF one on clearance (broken pot) for my MIL because it had a rojo congo off shoot that I cut off of the main plant and took for myself.

I just purchased one yesterday, it is a very full pot with multiple plants, one of the plants is completely different! It has a couple half variegated leaves on the bottom, but the rest of the plant is red, including the stems and aerial roots! The leaves are much bigger than the Birkin leaves and there’s absolutely no variegation, the leaves are a smooth darker green with maroon around the edges and a lighter red/green on the back, very pretty. I chose it because I loved the contrast between the two plants. From what I’ve seen, I think it’s a Rojo Congo.. BONUS PLANT! 😂😂

I know some of the information is proprietary, but if I wanted to start experimenting what would I need to start. there's not much being done in this regard in my country, but we do have some weird fruit tree species / genera to be more accurate, that don't grow anywhere else in the world, and the only effort being done in that regard is to do genetic analysis. would it be possible for you to explain tissue culture process enough so that I can start saving these plants for future generations

FYI Those are not "three searches/3 people", 3 is relative to the highest point in the chart (100)... Google Tends' charts are relative to trend peaks... So if the highest point on the chart (shown as 100) is, let's say, 500,000 searches, the 3 you have there actually represents 15,000 searches (3% of 50,000). Google doesn't disclose search volume/count, just trends as in 'peaks and lows'.

    • @TechplantChannel
      @TechplantChannel  3 ปีที่แล้ว

we shall see, the white is a "healthy leaf" its just missing chlorophyll which is what makes plants green and its also the stuff that allows the plant to make energy from the sun. so if its white it doesnt benefit the plant in any way. so too many white leaves and it cant support itself. if you want a birkin i can give you one

i’ve actually seen completely white leaves survive, but it slows down the growth of the plant because the green leaves have to make up for the energy lost by the lack of chlorophyll.

Unstable & should be on meds! I have a green one and it has done absolutely NOTHING since I got it. The other Birkin, well...I don't think it is. It's not a Rojo, maybe a Red Emerald. Keeps pushing out new leaves though. Green & white Birkin pffffft!

I actually bought one at Coles a month ago for $14.95, I just liked the look of the heavily striped leafs. I didn’t really have a good look at the plant until I got home and realised I scored well 😉 unfortunately it was the only one left at the time. I am worried though as I have got a completely white leaf coming in already. Sometimes you just get lucky 🍀 I suppose. They do have some nice plants there occasionally, I make sure every time I go to have a quick look.
